Throughout the world, Operation Smile volunteers repair childhood facial deformities while
building public and private partnerships that advocate for sustainable healthcare systems
for children and families. Together, we create smiles, change lives, heal humanity.
Founded in 1982. Operation Smile (www.operationsmile.org), headquartered in Norfolk,
Virginia, is a worldwide children’s medical charity whose network of global volunteers are
dedicated to helping improve the health and lives of children and young adults. Since its
founding, Operation Smile volunteers have treated more than 115,000 children born with
cleft palates and other facial deformities. In addition to contributing free medical
treatment, Operation Smile trains local medical professionals in its 26 partner countries
and leaves behind crucial equipment to lay the groundwork for long-term self-sufficiency.

Vietnam - Ngan
In my language, in Vietnamese, my name Thanh Ngan means "star." I was tarnished
though, born into a family of three, with a cleft lip and a gaping hole in my palate. For
the first three years of my life, I was living in shame and isolation in the small village
of Quy Nhon province in southern Vietnam.
Hearing about the Operation Smile team coming to Danang in 2002, my whole family
traveled for miles to see if they could help me. Though it was late on screening day,
our efforts finally paid off - I was accepted for surgery. Now my star shines brightly
and my future is as open to possibility as the heavens.

Nicaragua - Guillermo
After
One day when my mom was pregnant with me, she looked up into the darkening sky and
realized there was a solar eclipse. Later, when I was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate, she
and my dad said it was because of that eclipse. Luckily, they heard about an Operation Smile
mission coming to Managua, near where we live. They saved and saved, mom working as a
seamstress and dad as a construction worker, and were able to put enough money aside to
pay for our transportation. Now, five months after I was born, my lip has been repaired.
My family says I smile a lot more now. I still have to have another surgery for the roof of my
mouth, but I'm halfway there. My parents told the nice medical volunteers: "We are very
thankful because these medical missions help poor people. The people here could not afford
these surgeries, with how hard life is in Nicaragua. We cannot repay these people for what
they did for our child and all the other children."
