The John Deere Model "MT" Tricycle- Type General
The John Deere Model "MT" TricycleType General-Purpose is the kind of tractor you might have designed yourself—it has so many features you'll like. In weight. price, and work capacity, the "MT" fits into the John Deere Tractor line between the one-row Model "M" and the full 2-plow Model "B." In its amazing power for its size . . . in its remarkable ease of handling . . . in its operating and maintenance economy . . . in the real comfort it provides for the operator . . . in its wide adaptability to yeararound farm work . . . in its ease of servicing ... and in its modern line of matched WITH ADJUSTABLE FRONT AXLE This view shows the "MT" equipped with adjustable front axle for special requirements such as straddling beds, planting and cultivating without splitting centers, etc. Quik-Tatch working equipment ... it sets new standards for light tractors. With all its modern advancements, the "MT" retains the fundamental principles that have made John Deere Tractors so successful down through the years— simplicity, quality of materials and workmanship, extra weight, strength, and "lugging" power, to mention just a few. When you read the interesting pages that follow, we believe you will agree that for complete two-row power on small to medium-sized farms—for economical "helper" power on larger farms—the "M"I is today's outstanding "buy." WITH SINGLE FRONT WHEEL Here you see the "MT" equipped with single front wheel for growers who want to do a clo.e. clean job of cultivating in narrow-spaced rows without damage to the plants. ( 3) FOUR-WAY POWER PROVIDES UNEXCELLED VERSATILITY "MT" power is versatile power, flexible power. Just name the job and the chances are the "MT" will handle it in less time . . . with less effort . and at lower cost ... than you have ever handled it before. In your fields, in your barnyard—on practically any drawbar, belt, or power take-off job—you are "all set" with ample power, economical power, to pull or operate all machinery customarily handled with a 1- or 2-plow tractor. 1. DRAWBAR .. 2. 3. If you operate a small- or medium-sized farm, you will find the "MT" has power to pull 'most all drawn equipment you have on your place. New owners are invariably surprised at the lugging ability of the engine and the ability of the tractor to sustain the load in 2nd and 3rd speeds—which means more acres done per day. To provide a proper hitch point for drawn implements, an easily-attached drawbar hitch plate is provided. It has seven attaching holes for horizontal adjustment. The drawbar, to which much of the integral Quik-Tatch equipment is mounted, can be locked in any one of three vertical positions. The drawbar on the "MT" Tractor is Tocco Induction hardened for long wear. At sea level (calculated) maximum (based on 60° F. and 29.92 in. Hg.) Nebraska Test ... 18.77 horsepower. 2. BELT ... When equipped with belt pulley, available as extra, the "MT" provides smooth power for all types of belt jobs within its power range. Grinding feed, shelling corn, and sawing wood are some of the jobs this versatile tractor will do for you at low fuel cost. To hold the tractor into the belt it is necessary to lock only one rearwheel brake. It is not necessary to block the rear wheels as is customary with tractors not equipped with independent rear-wheel brakes. At sea level (calculated) maximum (based on 60° F. and 29.92 in. Hg.) Nebraska Test ... 21.57 horsepower. 3. POWER TAKE-OFF . Power take-off is regular equipment on the "MT." It is built right into the transmission and meets A.S.A.E. specifications. Spline is 1-3(8-inch diameter; speed, 550 r.p.m. 4. 4. (4) HYDRAULIC CONTROL ... Dual Touch-o-matic hydraulic control is regular equipment. Only one who has driven the tractor and used Touch-o-matic to raise, lower, and depth-adjust integral equipment can appreciate what a really great contribution this outstanding John Deere feature is making to power farming. This important feature is discussed in detail later. 10/ .8 / 96" 1st GEAR ADJUSTABLE WHEELS HANDLE ALL ROW SPACINGS 4.9 2.4 1.8 1.0 5,2 2nd GEAR 4th GEAR 3rd GEAR (NO SET STOPS) No matter what crops you grow—corn, cotton, tobacco, potatoes, peanuts, beets, beans, soybeans, etc.—you can get just the right rear-wheel tread you need to work them properly when you own an "MT." As the illustration above shows, the rear wheels are fully adjustable in or out on the axles from 48 to 96 inches. Any setting can be obtained between these limits . . . and one man does the job. NORMAL SPIED 16.10 Charts Show "KT' Adaptability The "MT," like all John Deere 2-Cylinder Tractors, invites comparison. The top chart (right) illustrates the wide range of ground speeds the "MT" gives you. John Deere made it a particular point to consult with experienced tractor owners in every agricultural section so that these speeds would be just as practical as it is possible to make them in one tractor. The bottom chart shows how the tractor supplies adequate power over the wide range of engine (crankshaft) speeds. (5) 900 1100 1000 1300 1200 1500 1400 1700 1600 IT'S FAST—IT'S SLOW— DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU WANT IT TO DO LOW High up on the list of important features farmers asked John Deere to include in the "MT" Tractor was a four-speed transmission. Farmers particularly wanted a faster top speed for hauling and for getting to and from the job more quickly. At the same time they wanted a slower low speed than previous tractors offered for handling such jobs as transplanting, spraying, close cultivation, and power shaft work. To meet these on-the-job requirements, the "MT" tractor provides four forward speeds and reverse—a speed for every need. 1 5/8 Miles per Hour First speed of 1-5/8 m.p.h.—the "creeper" gear—is a utility gear which provides the extremely slow speed needed for those careful transplanting jobs, for precision cultivating when the plants are small, and for combining. When operating at this speed, the tractor maintains its maximum power-shaft output, an important extra value. 31/s Miles per Hour Second forward speed of 3-1/8 m.p.h. provides a suitable speed for such jobs as plowing, bedding, middlebreaking, disking, and other heavy drawbar work, and for close cultivation. 41/4 Miles per Hour The third forward speed of 4-1/4 m.p.h. is just right for planting, mowing, late cultivating, and similar operations. 10 Miles per Hour High or transport speed of 10 to 11 m.p.h. provides a rapid travel speed for your hauling jobs and for getting around quickly from one location on the farm to another. Reverse Reverse speed is the same as the low forward speed-1-5/8 m.p.h. PROPER WEIGHT MEANS LOWER FUEL COSTS . . . LARGER DAILY CAPACITY When the "MT" owners put their tractors to work on such jobs as plowing and disking for the first time, they are invariably surprised that so much lugging power could be packed into such a small package. In most cases, plowing with a 2-bottom 14-inch integral plow is a simple matter. But what pleases them most is the lugging ability of the engine and the ability of the tractor to sustain the load in 2nd and 3rd forward speeds with little slippage—which means more acres covered per day, fewer man hours, and less fuel consumed per acre. Important reasons for this low percentage of wheel slippage are the large diameter drive wheels which afford maximum traction and the extra weight, properly distributed, front and rear, that is built into the "MT"—as much as 500 pounds over other tractors in its class. On competitive field tests, under identical conditions, the "MT" has consistently demonstrated its ability to keep moving right on up the field after other tractors have become stalled. When you're adding up the extra values you get in a Model "MT," be sure to include its extra built-in weight . . . properly distributed front and rear . . . that means extra traction, extra strength, and longer life. OUTSTANDING FUEL ECONOMY TYPE OF WORK GALLONS PER HR. LIGHT TRANSPLANTER YOU SAVE MONEY ON LIGHT OR HEAVY JOBS John Deere Tractors have always been known as leaders in low-cost performance. Whether you farm a small acreage or large, this rugged tractor, amazingly powerful for its size and weight, is planned and built to save you money. All its modern, advanced engineering features have a direct bearing upon economical operation. When you measure fuel economy in dollars and cents per acre or per job you'll find that the "MT" leads the light tractor field. This is borne out by comparative tests and by owners' testimony. Pete Jorgensen of Hampton, Iowa, says, "I figure my "MT" has saved at least $2 each day in operating costs over a large tractor doing the same work." MEDIUM HEAVY 2-BOTTOM 14-IN. PLOW HEAVY 6-FT. DOUBLE-ACTION DISK HARROW JOHN DEERE Touch-o-maticl The word itself tells the magic story of time and muscle saved by Model "MT" tractor owners in handling their many farming jobs. A touch of the operator's hand to the handy control lever and smooth hydraulic power raises, lowers, or sets Quik-Tatch tools to the exact working depth desired—automatically. Stubborn lifting levers, depth-adjusting levers, and trip ropes are done away with completely. Regular Equipment Touch-o-matic hydraulic control, of the dual type, is regular equipment on the John Deere "MT" Tractor. With Dual Touch-o-matic there are two (8) control levers, giving you a wide range of independent control. The left and right control levers may be operated individually or together. Moving the lever or levers to the rear raises the implement, and moving levers to the front lowers implement. A depth control stop on each quadrant can be set (after a few minutes' operation to determine the position) so implement always returns to the same working depth. This feature is made possible because Touch-o-matic is a precision control system in which the working position of the implement is always in direct relation to the position of the control lever. If, after the stop has been set, you find that occasionally it is necessary to go beyond this setting, control lever can be moved past the stop. Drawbar Controlled by Touch-o-matic 3-71 ■••••.. • leas Touch-o-matic makes it easy to drop integral plow into fence corners, plow out corners neatly. The right Touch-o-matic lever controls the drawbar, while the left lever controls the independent lift arm (inside left lift arm). All implements mounted entirely on the drawbar such as the plow, are controlled by the right lever. Cultivators and other implements which are mounted both front and rear are also controlled by the right lever. If independent action of individual units is desired, levers can be used independently. Advantages of Touch-o-matic Owners report that Touch-o-matic control is "tops" from every standpoint: On vegetable cultivator, one Touch-o-matic lever controls front tool bar, other controls rear tool bar. (1) It is fast and positive in action—hydraulic pump is at the front of the engine where it operates whenever the engine is running. (2) It is so easy to operate that a farm boy or girl—even the old folks—can get up on the tractor and do good work in the field when called upon to help during rush seasons. (3) It enables you to do things that are impossible in other light tractors. For instance, operators in the Western vegetable-growing sections are enthusiastic about the dual control feature which provides perfect delayed-lift for the new Quik-Tatch vegetable cultivator designed especially for the "MT" Tractor. Equipment on one side of tractor is raised while other is left at work to finish out point rows. The desired depth of planting, cultivating, and fertilizing is more evenly maintained on terraces, back furrows, or in dead furrows because right- and left-hand gangs can be operated at different depths. (4) One of the best features of all is the outstanding ease with which the control unit can be removed for servicing if necessary. The Touch-omatic assembly attaches to the tractor by means of easily accessible bolts. If service difficulties are encountered in the field, a phone call brings the dealer with a service kit. Valuable working time is saved for the owner. Touch-o-matic hydraulic control and the John Deere No. 5 Power Mower "team up" for fast, easy mowing (9) JOHN DEERE QUIK-TATCH WORKING EQUIPMENT With any tractor used for general-purpose farm work, it is important that changes from one job to another be made quickly and easily. The matched integral tools designed for the "MT" Tractor are called QuikTatch to describe the remarkable ease and speed with which one man can attach and remove them. When you see a John Deere Model "MT" Tractor being demonstrated, you will see plows, cultivators, and many other tools attached and detached so quickly you will hardly believe it possible. ABOVE: Attaching plow. BELOW: Quik-Tatch Cultivator ready to receive tractor. When attaching plows, listers, field cultivators, etc., merely back the tractor into the equipment. Height of drawbar is quickly and accurately adjusted by Toucho-matic control to match the hitch point on the equipment. No wrenches needed. No hammer. No heavy lifting. You stay right in the tractor seat. To detach, all that is necessary is to pull the pin and drive ahead. Tractor is free for other jobs. Most Quik-Tatch tools require no levers, main frame, wheels, axles, clutch, or cushionspring release. Two-Row Cultivator Goes on in Less than 10 Minutes One of the most important tools in the complete John Deere line is the modern "drive-in" type two-row Quik-Tatch Cultivator shown at lower left. One man attaches the cultivator in 10 minutes or less, yet the cultivator is just as rigidly and securely attached as old-style cultivators which often took several men and several times as long to hook up. ( 10 ) QUIK-TATCH EQUIPMENT FOR A WIDE VARIETY OF NEEDS Just name the job you want to do on your farm and the chances are the "MT" has the right tool to handle it. As you read through this folder you cannot help but get the impression that here is a modern tractor and equipment that are really "made for each other," a packaged farming unit that is in reality a system of farming. Available for use with the "MT" is a line of equipment that is built to stand up for years of good service—equipment that does better work, in less time, with less effort—equipment that's the climax of all the accumulated knowledge of more than 100 years' experience in working for and with American farmers. Whether you operate a small general farm, a truck farm, or a large farm, plantation, or ranch, you know that you can depend on the long-established John Deere organization to continue to make available the latest and most practical equipment for tractor farming. Remember—by itself a tractor is of little value. It's the ways in which you can make use of the power that count. It is important to keep this in mind when you choose your new tractor. Make sure you are getting a tractor for which matched equipment will be available today, tomorrow, and in the years ahead. Many of the tools you now have on your place can be adapted for use with the John Deere Model "MT" Tractor, although you will do better work, and do it faster and easier, with the extremely simple but highly practical tools that have been specially designed for it. The scenes at the right show just a few of the "MT" tools that are available to cut your costs . . . reduce your working hours .. . eliminate the physical effort formerly required with older tractors or animal power. THERE'S a grand "feel" to that wheel when you get up on the seat and drive a new "MT." You will be immediately impressed with its remarkable ease of handling—the instantaneous and positive response of the adjustable steering wheel . . . and the convenient, easy-toreach controls, including the individual, foot-operated rear-wheel brakes. Best of all, there is that wonderful Dual Toucho-matic feature that you can get only in an "MT," ready at your finger-tips for controlling working equipment. John Deere engineers were ever mindful of the operator when they designed the "MT." Ease of handling was considered of great importance in their plans for this modern tractor—and that's why operators, young or old, state that they can do more work with the "MT" with less effort, less fatigue. EXCELLENT VIEW OF WORK Cultivating is one of your most important jobs. Whether your land is flat or hilly, whether your crops are planted on regularly laid-out fields or on the contour, ample adjustments and flexibility are built into the "MT" to enable you to get the best work you ever enjoyed. Just make a list in your mind of the features you want in a good cultivating outfit—quick attaching by one man, unobstructed view of the work, real comfort for the driver, easy steering and quick dodge, full adjustability of rear-wheel tread, positive, independent brakes, hydraulic control, and all-around economy. Then check your list against the "MT" Two-Row cultivating unit and you'll find this John Deere outfit ranks "tops" in all these desirable points. The camera view at the left shows, better than words can tell, what we mean when we say that the view you get from the "MT" seat is UNEXCELLED. You see what you're doing —where you're going—always. You'll find that the "MT" has ample clearance for cultivating tall corn or vegetables. Crop clearance under lowest point (rear axle) is 21 inches. (12) CLOSE QUARTERS ARE NO PROBLEM The ability of the "MT" to turn short while cultivating, planting, and plowing is a time-saving feature that really speeds up the work. Headlands are shorter— more of the field is utilized for crops. If you have ever driven a John Deere Tractor you know how the individual rear-wheel brakes can be used to give amazingly short turns. Working tools are close-coupled to give you a compact unit that is easy to back into fence corners. As the illustration shows, it is a simple matter to back up, drop the Quik-Tatch integral plow by Touch-o-matic hydraulic control and finish out corners neatly. SELF-ENERGIZING BRAKES Modern, self-energizing disk-type brakes are regular on the Model "MT." They operate with equal effectiveness in stopping forward or backward motion. This type of brake eliminates need for brake drums. Size and weight are reduced. Braking area is increased. Brake linings are easier to replace. There are fewer wearing parts. INDIVIDUAL FOOT BRAKES CONTROL EACH REAR WHEEL RIGHT WHEEL .. . LEFT WHEEL... BOTH WHEELS . LOCKED .. . Press the right brake pedal to lock the right rear wheel for short turns to the right. Press the left brake pedal to lock the left rear wheel for short turns to left. Press both brake pedals with same foot to stop tractor. For belt work and parking, it's easy to lock tractor in position. Just trip latch with foot to release. (13) ADJUSTABLE AIR-CUSHION SEAT Seat control latch. i Air filler tube. Here's the riding ease you've always wanted in a tractor . . . an air bladder seat that is pumped up as desired through a valve easily accessible by means of a zipper in the rear of the cushion. When you drive a Model "MT" Tractor you literally "ride on air." The amount of air in the seat bladder can be regulated accurately to accommodate operators of varying weight and for different field conditions. The valve in the air filler tube fits any standard tire pump. If a pump is not readily available, the seat can be inflated by removing the valve core and blowing the bladder up by mouth. The air-cushion seat is regular equipment— doesn't cost you a cent extra. The Model "MT" seat is readily adjusted for your comfort. By compressing the seat control latch with the thumb of the left hand, the seat can be adjusted forward or backward to provide the most comfortable position for the operator when sitting or standing. i I di I 111 LOW BACK-REST SCIENTIFICALLY LOCATED Back-rest on the Model "MT" seat is at the base of the operator's back, where it supports; not at the small of the back to slap and bruise. Back-rest is well padded for comfort. CUSHION TENDS TO LEVEL ON UNEVEN GROUND When plowing or working on slopes, the shifting of operator's weight causes air in the seat bladder to shift to downhill side, keeping operator in a more upright position. STEERING WHEEL ADJUSTS IN OR OUT Like the seat, the steering wheel adjusts forward or backward for greatest comfort for the operator in sitting or standing position. Arrow points to locking nut which controls setting anywhere within a 12-inch range. The quality and amount of work you do with your tractor depends not only on the use of proper equipment, but also upon ease and convenience of tractor operation. The Model "MT" tractor is as convenient to handle as your automobile. All controls are readily accessible, as the driver's view at the right so clearly shows: (1) speed control lever, (2) adjustable steering wheel, (3) choke control, (4) ammeter, (5) water temperature gauge, (6) starter control, (7) ignition and light switch, (8) gear shift lever, (9) oil pressure gauge, (10) left Touch-o-matic control, (11) right Toucho-matic control, (12) left independent rear wheel brake, (13) right independent rear wheel brake, (14) clutch pedal, (15) belt pulley engaging lever, and (16) power take-off engaging lever. Off 9 SITTING OR STANDING POSITION SELF-STARTER IS REGULAR EQUIPMENT GEAR SHIFT LEVER IS HANDY TO OPERATOR By moving the steering wheel forward, a comfortable standing position can be obtained. It is never necessary to slide or swing the seat out of the way. This is important if operator must sit quickly. Battery and self-starter are regular equipment on the John Deere Model "MT" Tractor. Self-starter button is located right on the instrument panel as the illustration shows. Gear shift lever is at the operator's righthand, and the shift pattern is distinctly marked. There are four speeds forward and reverse—a speed for every farming need. (15) 3-WAY DRAWBAR IS PART OF TRACTOR, HYDRAULIC SYSTEM, AND EQUIPMENT The "MT" drawbar is a part of the tractor, part of the hydraulic lift, and at the same time serves as the frame for many of the working tools. Instead of buying a separate frame with each tool, you buy only one—the one on the tractor—a real dollarsand-cents saving. Illustration above shows how the drawbar is connected to the hydraulic lift arms by vertical linkage and how it serves at the same time as backbone or frame for integral equipment. The drawbar can be controlled hydraulically or can be locked in any one of three different positions. For drawn implements, a drawbar hitch plate is included with each tractor. The implement can be attached by dropping a bolt or pin into any one of the seven attaching holes provided. (16) WHEEL WIDTH IS QUICKLY CHANGED Rear-wheel tread is adjusted by simply raising the wheels off the ground with a jack or a hoist, loosening the four hub clamp bolts on each wheel, and sliding wheels in or out. Again, one man is all that is needed. All the way through, the tractor is designed to save time and effort and to hold the need for extra farm help to a minimum. ALL DAILY SERVICING FROM ONE SIDE SPEEDY AIRPLANE-TYPE HOOD FASTENERS All servicing that requires daily attention can be handled by one man in from 5 to 10 minutes. This includes checking the air cleaner, the radiator, the crankcase oil level, the fuel filter, the battery, and the fuel level in the fuel tank. The "MT" requires no grease gun, except when the adjustable front axle is used. Then the spindles must be greased. You wouldn't believe you could take the hood and grille off a tractor in two minutes. Yet that's all it takes with the "MT." Any farmer will appreciate what this means in time and money saved. Only a screw driver is needed to loosen the exclusive airplane-type fasteners—no bolts, nuts, or washers to drop down and become lost. Engine head and oil pan can be removed in 30 minutes. BRAKES ARE EASY TO SERVICE TOUCH-O-MATIC UNIT IS READILY ACCESSIBLE The disk-type, self-energizing brakes used on the "MT" eliminate the frequent adjustments necessary with band brakes. View at left shows how easy it is to get at the brake parts from a standing position, should servicing be necessary after long Should repair work ever be necessary on the Touch-o-matic unit, the unit can be easily removed for servicing on the farm or replaced with a dealer's service unit while repairs are made in the dealer's shop. Valuable time is saved when time means money. use. (17) THE JOHN DEERE MODEL "MT" ENGINE The simple, 2-cylinder, vertical, valve-in-head engine is the heart of the Model "MT" Tractor. It furnishes amazing power for its size. It saves you money. It is easy to keep in good running order. More and more, farmers are coming to see that the real cost of a tractor is not just the original purchase price, but the purchase price plus what it costs to operate and maintain the tractor during its life. If all tractors were purchased on this basis, farmers would quickly recognize that the 2-cylinder John Deere with its simple construction, its long life, and economical upkeep, is the tractor for them to buy. John Deere engines have been leaders in fuel and oil economy for the past 25 years. Competitive tests have demonstrated, time and time again, the outstanding dollars-and-cents operating economy of the "MT" Tractor in the light tractor field. 000 000 Two pistons • Four valves and valve springs Six rings SIMPLE THERMO-SIPHON TEMPERATURE CONTROL Proper operating temperature in the Model "MT" engine is maintained by the thermo-siphon system. This provides temperature control in its simplest, most effective form. A water pump, with its large number of parts, and thermostat are unnecessary on the John Deere. Circulation is governed automatically by requirements of engine. THE ENGINE HAS FORCEFEED LUBRICATING SYSTEM Effective lubrication in a farm tractor is perhaps the most important step toward low upkeep cost, long life, and satisfactory service. Efficient engine lubrication in the "MT" is assured always by the use of a force-feed system of lubrication. Oilpressure gauge is in full view of operator. A crankcase breather maintains a circulation of air through the crankcase, removing gases and vapors, and resulting in a clean crankcase. A handy "pull-out" oil gauge just like the gauge on your automobile tells at a glance the amount of oil in the crankcase at any time. Lubrication of transmission, differential, and final drives is entirely automatic. Phantom view above shows working parts of the simple 2-cylinder "MT" engine. Note that all parts are completely enclosed within a dustproof case. Oil filter with replaceable element keeps oil in good condition. 1111111111111111NEMINRIm ALL THESE MODERN FEATURES ARE REGULAR EQUIPMENT OIL-WASH AIR CLEANER Before any air can reach the carburetor of the Model "MT," it must first pass through the efficient air cleaner, where the dust and grit are removed.
