Question:
The horse I’m riding at the moment is not mine. The
owner only rides him for an hour, once a month, so
she lets me ride him as often as I want. The owner
told me that he was mistreated by a man at some
point in his history. Whenever I play the friendly
game with him I make sure he’s okay with the lead
rope on his body.
However, as soon as I swirl it around and it makes
that swish sound, he goes crazy. I’m guessing he was
mistreated with a rope in some way. He has no
problem with women but does not let any man get
close to him or touch him. As I am only starting off
with the Parelli Home Study Kit, I still have to get a
bit used to the tools. Once I let him graze, giving him
the whole lead rope and just stand there doing
nothing, he will step on the lead rope but once he
feels the tension, goes absolutely crazy! Is there
anything I can do so he does not get frightened if
something like this happens? He accepts the rope
when I play the friendly game with him and is no
trouble at all.
Pat and Linda relaxing for a few minutes at the Colorado Center while
Remmer finds this a wonderful opportunity to grab a mouthful of grass.
Answer:
Many horses are bothered by the swishing sound a
whip or twirling rope makes. What you need to do is
get him ‘desensitized’ but without being rude about
it. Retreat, retreat, retreat is the secret of building
confidence with things horses are afraid of. Instead of
standing there and swinging the rope, walk away
from the horse as you do it, giving him as much rope
as possible so he can follow at a distance that is more
comfortable for him. As his confidence grows he’ll
gradually get closer but don’t stop walking. Soon you
can face him and walk backwards, then finally stand
still and swing it in front of him, beside him, over his
head, etc. Take your time and when he gets worried,
retreat from him but don’t stop swinging.
As for stepping on the rope and panicking, this is also
natural for horses. They hate to be trapped and
feeling something ‘grab’ them behind the head can
be very frightening until they understand what’s
going on. Game #2 (Porcupine Game) will be the

best help here. Teach your horse to yield to gradually
increasing pressure on the back of his head, first
using your hand to lower his head, and then using the
lead rope to help him figure out how to drop his head
when he feels pressure rather than jerk back against
it. Use lots of release and the moment he tries to give
to the pressure, take your hand off him and rub. With
repetition he’ll quickly learn how to respond
appropriately to pressure instead of panicing. Just
remember it takes a little time and lots of repetition
for it to become an automatic response that overrides
his natural reaction.
Why some horses are more afraid of men can have
something to do with being mistreated by one, but
often it has more to do with the way men tend to
approach horses as opposed to the way women or
children do. Generally speaking, women are softer in
attitude and more empathetic with the feelings of the
horse whereas men tend to be more direct and
dominating which feels more predatory to the horse.
There are many, many demonstrations Pat has done
with horses who ‘hate’ men, but because he acts
more like a horse-man, the horses love him.
