As kick-off events go, this was spectacular…a sentiment that was echoed by attendees and sponsors, alike. The world has changed, as has the general uncertainty about the future, prospects for retirement, long term care, and how we provide for our parents/partners/friends. This edition is dedicated to continuing the discussion started at the Symposium and, identifying ways to ensure our futures are secure. Many answer yes to the first question, but aren’t so sure about the second. We put off things that cause us stress or don’t affect us immediately. And for most of us, retirement isn’t an immediate concern. Whether you’re 25 or 45, you should be planning for your retirement. I’ve heard every excuse as to why people don’t have a retirement plan. None of them are good enough reasons not to be saving. 1 I spend everything I make. You aren’t alone. In fact, according to a recent article If these are your excuses… in CNNMoney, the average you’re busted. Here’s American household has nearly what you need to do. $10,700 in credit-card debt. MGMC-0089 Clarity / Dec_Layout 1 9/30/11 3:02 PM Page 2 You can do something about this! Sit down and assess your financial situation. It’s really just simple math. Add up your monthly expenses – the necessities – and subtract from your income. Learn where you’re spending your money. Then add another expense – savings! Make it reasonable, affordable and mandatory. You’ll probably need to adjust your lifestyle, maybe not order that bottle of wine at dinner, but isn’t retirement security worth it? You’ll form good spending habits, but until you assess your situation, you won’t know where to begin. 2 Saturday, December 3 Instituto San Carlos, Key West December 16, 17, 18 Colony Theatre, 1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach For more information or to purchase tickets, visit miamigaychorus.org It’s a cruel world. There aren’t any good investments. We’re in a recession. The stock market is a seesaw. The real estate bubble didn’t burst, it exploded. The list goes on…and it makes us wonder if investing makes sense. Why would I invest in stocks when my uncle lost 40% of his life savings? Why would I buy into real estate when my neighbor’s mortgage holder just foreclosed? These are all valid questions. But you have options, and there are free tools available to help you decide what types of investments are a match for you and your goals. Whether it’s mutual funds, equities, bonds or commodities like gold, you need to determine your comfort zone and start. What’s good today might not be tomorrow – it’s important to re-evaluate your strategies on a regular basis. In addition, I recommend looking into the Roth 401(k) and IRA regimes because you’re paying tax on what you put in, not on the growth you take out many years later. It’s too late for me to start. What’s the point? 3 It’s not too late…but if you keep waiting, it will get more difficult. Ten years can make a really big difference – compounding can actually double your savings. Oct – Dec ‘11 | CLARITY [3 {continued} Donor Recognition Wall With origins in the early 20th century, a donor recognition wall is typically a wall-mounted display found in a centralized location of a hospital, university, museum, library, worship facility, or other non-profit institution. It consists of a listing of names of persons or companies that contributed funds to a fundraising effort of the organization. The fundamental purpose of a donor recognition wall is to honor the financial contributors of an organization, and to serve as an incentive for potential donors to contribute. It will frequently incorporate a prominent display of the organization’s logo. The donor wall of recognition located on a prominent wall in the LGBT Visitor Center, in the heart of South Beach, honors much more than a financial contribution. It is a tangible piece of granite, or in this case, ceramic tile that honors your being there at a certain time, at a certain place, at a certain “beginning,” in history. Chiseled in one of the granite plaques on the Grande Legacy Wall in the lobbies of both the Ziff Ballet Opera House and the Knight Concert Hall at the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts are these words – The Friends of the Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. It recognizes that members of the Gay & Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender, as well as the Allied community, helped support and Sacramento, California which reads – In Honor of Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender Veterans Killed in Action – that signifies that members of the LGBT community were there, at that time, at that place in history, to help fight for justice and the freedom for all people. HOTBOX About the MiamiDade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce MDGLCC is the largest not-for-profit corporation in the county for gay and lesbian businesses. The sad part is that so many of us buy into this piece of nonsense. What are we doing? It seems we are grabbing onto a feeling of “youth” at any cost simply because we see “youth” as better. But is it really? I believe we are really only glorifying the wrinkle-free, firm-jawed, perky-buttocked “idealized” vision of the youthful body. Is there truly no difference between the mind, heart and spirit of an untried 22-year-old and a fairly seasoned 50-something? You bet your not-soperfect ass there is! By the time we hit our late 40s and start moving through our 50s and 60s we have put some mileage on our vision of life. Life has happened. And, more often than not, it certainly was not the game we planned to play. But we learned (hopefully) to play the cards we were dealt and accept how they have fallen. When it comes to planning for your retirement income, it’s easy to overlook some of the common factors that can affect how much you’ll have available to spend. If you don’t consider how your retirement income can be impacted, you may not be able to enjoy the retirement you envision. Solid retirement income planning involves understanding risks and how they can influence your available income in retirement. Investment or market risk is the risk that fluctuations in the securities market may result in the reduction and/or depletion of the value of your retirement savings. If you need to withdraw from your investments to supplement your retirement income, two important factors are the amount of the withdrawals you take and the growth and/or earnings your investments experience. For example, constant withdrawals from your savings combined with prolonged negative market returns can result in the depletion of your savings far sooner than planned. The LGBT community especially puts emphasize on youth. As the first wave of baby boomers hits 65, planning for the future takes on a different feel. Who do we need to take care of and who will take care of us? Organized care planning and management eases the stress and possible trauma of aging incidents. As we age we need to enlist a team of professionals to help design a solid care plan. Necessary professionals include a family law attorney, a financial planner, a medical professional (generalist), CPA, insurance agents and a geriatric care manager. These professionals should specialize in servicing the needs of the LGBT community and they need to stay current with changing laws and products that assist our community with successful aging. Thinking and planning for a variety of aging situations makes it easier for you and your family of choice, biological or legal, to successfully assist you and them. The issues will arise, we all will grow old, we all will need help and will need to give help. But there are no crises when you plan ahead; just solvable situations that have been carefully thought out and planned for. There are no crises, when you plan ahead. Why don’t you start planning now? MIT finance professor, Andrew Lo recently wrote in Reuters, in an article called The Madness of Wall Street: “The market we are operating in is markedly different from five years ago. We are seeing extraordinary emotional reactions from central banks, politicians, regulators, and investors. That kind of reaction is not conducive for building long-term wealth.” I agree, but I believe there are conservative options that may have growth potential. I feel that economic turmoil may often create exciting new opportunities. I specialize in retirement planning, and I have been using what I believe are different strategies. Many financial planners I speak with believe in buy and hold and in my opinion that may not be a full appreciation of the risk levels that we may be facing and how things have changed. 10 ] CLARITY | Oct – Dec ‘11 One note on how to choose a retirement planning professional: I feel strongly that you should work with an independent, fully-registered financial advisor. The fiduciary standard of conduct means that a professional always puts a client’s interest first. In general, fiduciary duties include utmost care, integrity, honesty and full disclosure, loyalty, and good faith. These can differ from the “suitability” standards under which most brokers operate. Albeit 30 is the new 20, it’s never too early to begin aging a fine wine. Start by growing grapes. Cultivate a 401k or IRA, make a plan to reduce debt and reap the benefits of a savings. Then cask the fruits of your labor to mature. Get regular checkups, eat healthy and stay active during the fermentation process. Finally, the best part. Enjoy a glass of wine with your friends and family, live, laugh, love but don’t forget it takes a lot of preparation and care to age a fine wine. Scott Bader, Triverden Creative T: 786.309.7542 scott@triverden.com MDGLCC MEMBER Is Your Life in Order? We are all different in every way imaginable but there’s one thing we all have in common. Our time here will have an end and when that day comes the real victims are the people we leave behind. We spend our lives caring for our loves, making sure they’re happy, fed, rested, sheltered, and loved. We do these things because it’s in our nature to protect the ones we love. Yet so many times we fail to take care of one of the most important things simply because of the disagreeable nature of the subject. However, sticking your head in the sand won’t make it go away. End of life planning is one of the most endearing ways we can make sure those left behind are not burdened with the expense of our funeral/ cemetery arrangements. The hundred plus decisions that must be made when a person passes away should be dealt with ahead of time. Most importantly you have a binding, irrevocable contract that voices your wishes, asking they be honored without interference from others such as mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters or other family members. Services Offered: • TMJ Disorders/Headaches • Implants • Invisalign • Sleep Apnea • Facial Treatments • Botox Before you know it, life after your career will begin. Many call this retirement. This article shall discuss three things you can do now to assure your transition into retirement is a smooth one. 1. Understand your pension and savings options: Many who have a pension don’t clearly understand their options upon disability, death or retirement. A “vested” pension is one which is “yours” and cannot be modified or taken away unless there are extraordinary circumstances. Most pensions today provide for a lump sum payment in lieu of monthly benefits. Others provide for early retirement at a reduced value. Yet others may continue to accrue benefits even if you continue working. In terms of your own planning take into account the advice of a trusted financial planner(s) who will look at your finances, health and lifestyle to advise you on how to manage your pension. While the lump sum is appealing it may not be the right option. If you opt for monthly benefits from your pension ASK the plan administrator for proof the pension is insured. In terms of your savings, also work with your advisor to determine how to safely invest your assets and plan to spend them in your later years. Some plans provide for you to take monthly distributions (like a pension) and you can leave your account intact. Others require you to take a lump sum. For many people this may be the largest 12 ] CLARITY | Oct – Dec ‘11 sum of money they have ever had! Be careful and surround yourself with the right advisors. 2. Prepare Advance Directives: Advance Directives consist of three documents that tell others what to do. This section shall review these documents. The Power of Attorney allows another person power over your property and sometimes your healthcare decisions. It is effective when signed by you, so be careful; it is a powerful document. The health care surrogate names another person to act in your stead when you are not able to make decisions about your treatment within the healthcare system. Lastly, the living will is a document that tells your health care surrogate and health care providers what forms of treatment and life support you desire. This is a very important and detailed document; is speaks for you when you cannot speak. Be sure to work with a qualified attorney to prepare these documents.
