*Note the Senior Community Center and the

Township Clerk’s office.

PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Independence Township
Senior Community Center
provides programs and services
to individuals age 50 and over.
Programs promote fitness,
healthy lifestyle, socialization and
enrichment through exercise,
daytrips, extended travel and
a wide variety of classes and
activities. Services include
transportation, meals on wheels,
Medicare Counseling, medical
loan closet and referrals to
addiyional resources that promote
independence, safety and wellness.
HERE’S THE SCOOP…
FRIENDS OF THE INDEPENDENCE SENIOR ADULT
ACTIVITY CENTER (FITSAAC): Meets on the second
Wednesday every month starting at 9:00 a.m. unless the
Senior Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled before:
The next three July 13, August 11 and September 14,
2016. Our “Friends” were approved in 2010 by the IRS
as a 501© (3) non-profit, tax exempt organization. The
Friends is managed by a Board of Directors, which is
comprised of some of the members of the Senior Center
Advisory Committee. Their main goal is to raise funds to
help support programs and services of the Senior Center.

NOTES FROM THE SENIOR DIVISION
SUPERVISOR…
I hope everyone is having a great summer! We have
been very busy at the Center with everything we offer
and we thank all of you for your support. You are the
reason our programs and services continue to grow.
If you have not had a chance to join us for lunch
we are now offering healthy menus for our Thursday
Lunches. We always have Pot Luck on the first
Thursday of every month. If you decide not to bring
a dish to pass you can pay $5.00. We also started
Throw Back Thursdays on the third Thursday of each
month where we offer soup and sandwich or soup
and salad for $5.00 which includes beverages and
desserts. On the second and fourth Thursdays we
offer a full lunch including beverages and dessert for
$7.00 and you don’t have to tip! Everyone is welcome
to come and don’t be shy about coming by yourself
because we have a very friendly group that enjoys
meeting new people. To see what were are serving
in July and August see page 15 for a complete menu.

every other Month starting at 9:00 a.m.: The next two
meetings are July 13 and September 14, 2016. This
group is approved by the Township Board to represent
the Center and to offer input and support into the centers
operations and programs.

SENIOR CENTER MEMBERSHIP
Your membership is valid from the date you sign up
until a year from that date. Couples should sign up at
the same time. Our membership fees are:
$12.00 a person for residents.
$22.00 a couple for residents.
$17.00 a person for non-residents
$32.00 a couple for non-residents.
Residents are persons who live in the Independence
Township Community. All new members will receive a bimonthly newsletter with their membership along with a
one time welcome package that includes a $5.00 coupon
that can be used towards a class or program. Your
membership also entitles you to discounts on all of our
programs and classes. By participating in a couple of
programs your membership will pay for itself. All of our
programs and trips reflect member and non-member fees.

CHECK OUT OUR NEW LOOK!
You know you have always wanted to try something
adventurous. Oakland County Parks is offering an ‘adults
only’ day packed with exciting new experiences. Participants
are welcome to try zip-lining, geocaching, kayaking, a
climbing tower, paddleboat and pontoon rides and nature
education programs. Oakland County will be providing staff
to offer guidance and assistance. Lunch will be provided
and is included in this fun summer day. Take advantage of
mini-bus transportation provided from the Senior Community
Center. Deadline to register is July 8, 2016.

Come and check out two great trips we are offering in
2017. Ed McKenna from Collette Travel will be here to
share highlights of Hawaii by Land and Sea and Australia
and New Zealand in 2017. Please call the office to place
your name on the list if you are planning to attend.
This two day AARP Driver Safety Program covers
defensive driving strategies and current rules of the road
in today’s challenging driving environment. The course
provides practical tips to adjust to the normal changes in
vision, hearing and reaction time to help ensure a driver’s
safety and the safety of others on the road. Course
participants may be eligible to receive an insurance
discount. Consult your insurance agent for further details.

This eight-session course is sponsored by the Area
Agency on Aging and led by two trained instructors.
These classes’ help participants learn to:
•Think of falling and fear of falling as controllable
•Set realistic goals for increasing activity
•Change the environment to reduce fall risks
•Exercise to increase strength and balance
Participants will engage in group discussion, problem
solving, skill building and learn exercises to increase

room. Learn about risk factors, 6 steps to prevent a fall,
and medications that could increase your risk. McLaren
Oakland staff will also conduct screenings to those

and other devices to cope with hearing loss. A technician
from Costco will discuss hearing aid technology
and is available to conduct hearing assessments. A
representative from Clear Captions will describe the
100% federally funded telephone program designed
for those with hearing loss which provides a caption
telephone, caption service and installation. Silent Call
will demonstrate other products. Plan to join us for

This basic exercise class is designed to provide a wellrounded program to improve strength, flexibility and
balance. Participants will practice movements that
simulate or enhance activities performed in daily life. A
great way to improve and maintain physical functioning
with easy to learn cardio steps to fun music. If you wish,
you can bring light weights.
*If you are interested, you will be required to attend one
mandatory training session which will be offered on the
following dates:

These training sessions are provided to instruct you on the
proper use of the walking poles so that you receive optimal

Dance to country, salsa, cha-cha and rock and roll rhythms
with Rosemary Hall to exercise your body and mind. You
are not obligated to participate on consecutive weeks.
Stop in when the dancing mood strikes! All skill levels
welcome to this ongoing program.
Feel the benefits! This gentle exercise program is
designed to recall those strengths and movements.
Improve and maintain flexibility, mobility and range of

The Senior Community Center has walkers, canes,
commode chairs, shower seats, wheelchairs and other
items to loan out. A $25.00 CASH deposit is required
to borrow wheel chairs, seated walkers and transfer
benches. A $10.00 CASH deposit is required to borrow
shower chairs. If the item is not returned within 6 months,
the money will be automatically deposited into the Senior
Center account, unless a time extension is requested.
Adult Depends may also be available. Please consider
donating medical equipment that you no longer need to

MINOR HOME REPAIR PROGRAM
Blue Cross will keep the current Legacy price through the
2016 calendar year. It is expected that we will know the
2017 cost in the fall prior to the Open Enrollment period.

Counselor, are available to provide information and to

OR MEALS ON WHEELS
This program is designed to help low income households
to complete repairs of no more than $5,000 to a single
unit residence. There is no cost to you! The repairs can
include replacing furnaces, water heaters, roofs and
other minor repairs. To qualify, you must be a resident
of Independence Township or the City of the Village of
Clarkston plus: 62 years of age or older, Disabled Adult
18 or older (disability documents required) and or low
income and the owner of the home in need of repair.

The Oakland County Health Division Dental Program
serves the basic dental needs of low-income residents
who lack dental insurance. It is not a dental insurance
plan. Program recipients are provided an evaluation
and a course of basic dental treatment. Registration
fee (once qualified) is $15 per family. Visit fee is $15

IN CLINTONWOOD PARK
The Carriage House in Clintonwood Park
is available for rent on some evenings and
weekends. The building includes a 20 foot wide
x 70 foot long community room that can seat 70
people, a full-sized kitchen, and two handicap
accessible bathrooms with baby changing
stations. What a perfect place for that birthday
party, anniversary, or baby or wedding shower!!
The cost is $45 per hour for Independence
Township Residents and $65 per hour for nonresidents.
Senior Community Center Bartsch Hall is available
for rent on some evenings and weekends. This
large hall is 32 feet wide by 50 feet long and can
seat up to 100 people. Rental includes use of
commercial kitchen with gas stove and handicap
accessible bathrooms. The cost is $55 an hour
for Independence Township Residents and $75
an hour for non-residents. Availability is on a first
come first serve basis.
The returnable security deposit is $100 payable
