Your new look Supplement
Welcome to the first new look Bulletin
Supplement. As you can see we've moved to a
full colour format to improve the appearance
of the magazine and have included some new
editorial features to add extra value to the
UK's top speech and language therapy
recruitment publication.
The inclusion of editorial in the form of
news stories and features will allow RCSLT to
communicate more effectively with its
members. We'll be able to bring you up-todate information on new legislation and
important issues like Agenda for Change. We
also aim to bring you employment-related
features to help you further your career or, if
you are a manager, to help you fill your vacant
positions.
A new way to advertise
It is important to note that there is a new way
to book advertisements for both the Bulletin
and Bulletin Supplement. RCSLT has acquired
the services of contract publishers TG Scott
Healthcare to manage the advertising
opportunities in both College titles.
To discuss advertising rates and deadlines
or to book an advert, contact Katy Eggleton,
tel: 020 7878 2344 or email:
katy@mcmslondon.co.uk. In addition to the
Supplement's traditional recruitment
advertising, there are now opportunities to
advertise in the Bulletin itself. The Bulletin will
feature new types of advertising, such as
clinical products, educational courses and
other services that SLTs might find useful.
Talk to Katy for details.
Katy will handle quick look date bookings,
which will still feature in the Supplement.
Specific interest group (SIG) and local group
notices will now feature in the Bulletin and
can be booked by sending your details to:
bulletin@rcslt.org
We are also planning to feature member
adverts. So, if you've got second-hand books
to sell, garden furniture to auction or a
holiday cottage to rent out, talk to Katy.

Send the details, including where you’ve moved from and
to, your new contact address (optional) and a photograph,

Through their eyes
New feeding guidelines
tackle clinical risk
Calderdale Royal Hospital (CRH) SLT adult team
coordinator Dave Holland was part of a multidisciplinary
team that has produced medication and enteral feeding
guidelines for Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust and
PCTs in the Calderdale and Huddersfield area.
The team, which included senior CRH pharmacist Sandra
Martin and senior CRH dietitian Rachael Davidson,
produced the extensive document over an 18-month period
in conjunction with the local PCTs.
The cross-site guidelines promote best practice, while
addressing the significant element of clinical risk associated
with medication and enteral feeding.
Topics covered include: administering medication,
prescribing issues, tube maintenance, tablet crushing, drug
absorption and interactions, xerostomia and oesophageal
mucosal injury.

Ged Rose, who has overcome autism and a stammer to
become a popular Manchester radio DJ, featured in
Through their Eyes, on Granada TV in June. The series
featured four people from the North West living with
disabilities. Over three episodes, viewers followed them as
they went about their daily lives and gained an insight into
the unique way they live and cope with their condition.

Next Sedgefield
instalment available
The fourth in the series of Sedgefield PCT SLTs’ occasional
papers on human communication is now available.
The latest paper is the work of SLT technician Liz
Thompson, and discusses the ‘theory of mind’ in children
with autism. The paper is an edited version of Liz’s BTEC
dissertation.
Liz works solely with children and for two days each week
works alongside SLTs in an autism resource base within
Beaumont Hill School and Technology College, a local
special school.
Previous Sedgefield papers cover the relationship between
ways of talking and thinking, autistic spectrum disorder in
the family, and researching literacy.
Department head Dr Graham Williamson said, “We are
all very proud of Liz and pleased to disseminate her high
quality work through our ad hoc papers.”

than I would have done in the UK,
although I still did clinical work.”
“It was a wonderful experience to live
in another culture, it also made me look
at my culture from another perspective
and that was an interesting experience,”
Heather adds. “It was challenging using
my skills in a new environment and
adapting them to find the most effective
way of working in Uganda. I learnt an
enormous amount from my colleagues
and clients.”
VSO gives you the chance to take your
skills and experience to countries where
they are most needed. This will allow you
to develop your professional confidence
and abilities, often in an area where
medical resources are in short supply, as
well as gaining an insight into different
attitudes towards disability and illness.
You will be sharing your knowledge
certainly, but you can expect to learn a
lot from them in return.
The NHS’s growing acceptance and
recognition of career breaks as an
effective way to retain valued staff, is
allowing many individuals the
opportunity to explore the option of
volunteering abroad. The potential
professional and personal gains are
enormous. From learning new skills you
can take home with you, to meeting new
people and exploring a different culture,
the rewards an experienced SLT can get
from volunteering with VSO are endless.

VSO / Jon Spaull
Would you like the opportunity to work
in a completely different environment?
Are you looking for inspiration and even
greater challenges? Want a change but
don’t want to abandon your career
completely? Voluntary Service Overseas
(VSO) needs experienced professionals
with skills like yours.
Working and living alongside local
colleagues, you will help improve the
quality of SLT services in disadvantaged
communities. You can also expect to
develop new skills during your
placement, such as leadership and
adaptability. On returning to the UK you
can be confident of enhancing your
career prospects.
VSO, which has been sent more than
29,000 volunteers overseas since it’s
formation in 1958, is an international
development charity. Volunteers live and
work with local communities and share
their skills and experience to help tackle
poverty in 74 of the world’s poorest
countries.
Speech and language therapists are
vital to VSO’s primary development goal
of health service provision. Most
volunteers work in hospitals or
rehabilitation centres and work with
adults or children and their families. You
could be organising and delivering
training to staff, and advising patients
and their families. There are also some
teaching jobs, where you could be
establishing an SLT course and training
SLT assistants.
You will need to be degree, or
equivalent, qualified and have two years
experience. All jobs involve hands on
training and the clinical instruction of
other professionals.
Speech and language therapist Heather
Robinson spent two years in Uganda.
“I was the only SLT in the whole
country.” Heather says. “I was involved in
setting up an SLT course. I was
