Ruth Ann's notes
It is, indeed,
an honor and
privilege for
me to serve
as the Interim
President & CEO
of this great
organization,
which has been
a beacon in McLean County for more
than 104 years. I have the opportunity
to work with an engaged Board of
Directors and very dedicated staff.
Together, we embrace YWCA’s mission
to eliminate racism, empower women
and promote peace, justice freedom
and dignity for all. After walking in the
door on January 2, 2013, I met with
all Administrative staff and program
directors to get acquainted and hear
about their programs. While listening,
I was amazed at the number of YWCA
services my family and I have benefited
from and that I have partnered with
professionally for more than 30 years!
Much is going on in 2013...
• We celebrated the 10th Anniversary
of the Circle of Women on February 15,
2013, at the Doubletree in Bloomington.
• “Workin' Worms” is a garden based
learning program in which children
enrolled in Child Care at YWCA will
have the opportunity to learn more about
the environment by tasting different
fruits and vegetables and planting seeds
in the garden.
Check out YWCA McLean County's new
website! In late February 2013, YWCA
launched a brand new website template,
rolled out by YWCA National. Be sure to
take a look at all the new features it has
to offer!
• Kids’ Peace Camp at YWCA is during
Spring Break, March 25-29, 2013.
• Peace Essay contest winners will be
announced at a luncheon on April 26th.
• April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Many good things are happening at
YWCA. Our programs and services address
a variety of needs across the lifespan. I
encourage you to visit www.ywcamclean.

provide to survivors.

spring 2013
workin' worms in
child care
The Workin’ Worms is a garden-based
nutrition education program that will be
implemented within YWCA childcare
classes this spring. Garden-based
learning is an instructional strategy
that utilizes the garden as a teaching
tool. This type of strategy encompasses
programs, activities and projects in
which the garden is the foundation
for integrated learning through active,
engaging, real-world experiences that
have personal meaning for children.
Schools around the country, and around
the world, are using gardens to integrate
lessons in science, math, environmental
studies, health, and community studies.
Not only does working in the garden
give children the chance to explore the
natural world and experience outdoor
physical activity, it also provides
children with a chance to engage
in unique social activity with their
peers and teachers. While they may
be more focused on the fun, children
will also be practicing cooperation,
responsibility, proactive behaviors,
and working toward a common goal
with their classmates. Along with
planting seeds and working in the
garden, children will also have the
opportunity to taste a variety of fruits
and vegetables, participate in cooking
activities, and take recipes home to
their families. Through this program
and the enthusiasm of staff and
teachers, children can have fun while
learning about and experiencing good,
healthy food. Feel free to contact Emily
Koller at ekoller@ywcamclean.org

racial justice council
YWCA McLean County’s mission is
to eliminate racism, empower women
and promote peace, justice, freedom
and dignity for all. Did you know that
eliminating racism was deliberately placed
before empowering women? The reason is
that until racism is eliminated, all women
will not be empowered. So, while each
phrase carries equal weight with YWCA,
there is a special urgency to address issues
of racism that exist in our community.
In order to identify those issues and
develop a plan to address them, YWCA
initiated the formation of the Racial
Justice Council. The council is a group
of like-minded people and organizations.
It has been meeting since May 2012, to
find common ground to work together to
influence the elimination of racism in our
community.
The Racial Justice Council is not designed
to field complaints. There are other
institutions and organizations in place to
do that. The council’s goal is to work with
community leaders to address issues of
institutional racism that exist as a result
of systems and, sometimes, outside of
conscience awareness. The aim is to make
this a welcoming community for people of
all ethnicities.
If you are interested in more information
about the council, please contact Norene
Ball at (309) 662-0461 ext. 265 or
nball@ywcamclean.org.
girls be u active in community
Girls Be U has been off to a great start
since the program began in fall 2011.
In fact, program numbers have doubled
since the pilot program. Hosting 8 girls
during the pilot program, Girls Be U
has expanded to include programming
for both high school and junior high
aged teens. YWCA is proud to say that
Girls Be U has served over 20 teen girls
in this capacity, allowing for growth in
leadership skills, self-esteem and personal
empowerment.
up their perspective on life and what is
possible for their futures.”
Girls Be U has plans to continue their
fun field trips. Coming up, the girls will
attend a college class on Illinois State
University’s campus. The girls will get to
experience a day in the life of a college
student by going to class, eating in a
dining hall and even touring a dorm room.
“The girls are very excited about their
futures, and we are excited to be a small
part of their journey,” says Ashlee.
According to Ashlee Gilot, Stepping
Stones Prevention Educator & Facilitator
of Girls Be U, “The girls have met new
friends, tried new things and discussed
issues to help shape their futures.”
Some of the activities that the girls have
enjoyed the most include horseback
riding at the Breezy Bluffs Riding
Academy, gymnastics at the Rising
Stars Academy, a cooking class hosted
by YWCA’s former child care Kitchen
Specialist, Selena Gunn and rock
climbing at Upper Limits.
