The History Of The Pura Vida Spirits Company
To tell the story of Pura Vida, makers of the finest and
smoothest tequilas in the world, we must go back to 1923,
where the Vivanco brothers worked the agave fields in the
Highlands of Jalisco, the heart of Mexico’s finest agave
producing region. Under the watchful eye and loving care
of Agaveros like these, the fields of beautiful blue agave in
Los Altos became known far and wide for their exceptional
quality, rich flavor, and high sugar content. Sugar is the
lifeblood of tequila. It was here in the company of 4th
generation Agaveros that the first expression of Pura Vida
Tequila would soon be born.
Enter Stewart Skloss, head honcho behind the Pura Vida
empire. He’s a Texan through and through, born and raised,
but there’s no part of the world he hasn’t seen or touched.
From New York to London and Moscow to Kuwait, no
matter how far he traveled there was always an empty
spot in Stewart’s heart the life of an international jet-setter
just couldn’t fill. His love of Texas and Mexico took him
back to his younger days with his amigos in Nuevo Laredo
where they frequented the famed Cadillac Bar and drank
the seductively satisfying Mexican elixir called tequila.
One fateful day, while living in Guadalajara, Stewart and
his amigos stopped in the town of Tequila for a two hour
sampling at one of the local distilleries. What started out
as a simple tasting turned into a two-day fiesta, fueling the
fire in him to follow his dream of one day making the finest
tequila in the world.
He spent years traveling all across Mexico in search of the
ultimate tequila, or “El Primero Uno.” He learned all about
what separates one tequila from another and about how
important the purest and cleanest water is to the process
of making the finest spirit possible. Armed with the
knowledge and experience of what he wanted to create,
he joined forces with the Vivanco’s and together they
developed the flavor profile for the first three expressions
of Ultra-Premium Pura Vida Tequila. The wealth he had
amassed and the friends he’d made along the way created
the perfect opportunity and he was set to do exactly what
he’d dreamed of for so many years; produce the “Primero
Uno” for the world to enjoy. His years of searching across
Mexico, tasting every type and style of tequila had come
to an end, and his years of building the tequila empire he’d
always known would be his destiny, at long last, could
now begin, all he needed now was a name for his ultimate
creation.
In his travels throughout Mexico and Central America
Stewart came to know the phrase, “Pura Vida” as it’s used
commonly in Costa Rica and surrounding areas as a kind of
greeting; an affirmation of how good life can be. Meaning
literally “Pure Life” Pura Vida means much more than this
and people often use it in a variety of positive ways, all
celebrating the joy of life. Stewart knew right away this
was the perfect name for his creation, and the perfect
toast for those who live life to the fullest. To the good life,
to the pure life, Pura Vida!
Once back in the States, Stewart met up with longtime
friend, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, and tequila aficionado in
his own right, Billy F. Gibbons of ZZ Top. Stewart knew Billy
shared his dream of “El Primero Uno” and when Stewart
approached Billy with the tequila he created, Billy told
Stewart he’d all but given up on ever finding the perfect
tequila, but for a friend he’d happily try it and give him an
honest opinion. The very next day Billy Gibbons came on
board and the small batch craft brand where the first Pura
Vida Tequila expression was born began its meteoric rise
into the nationwide spirits company Pura Vida Tequila has
become today.
Ultimately outgrowing the humble roots where the Pura
Vida Tequila story began, Stewart knew he must carefully
protect the formula and processes by which he developed
the perfect flavor profile for each award-winning
expression if The Pura Vida Tequila Company was going
to continue to expand. The five-stage water purification
process so critical to the flavor of each expression along
with the highest sugar content pure blue agave in the land
found a new home in Pura Vida’s own distillery, a state-ofthe-art facility located near beautiful Lake Chapala.
And so the once tiny company born from a dream now
stands poised on the brink of greatness as it starts the
newest chapter in the history of The Pura Vida Tequila
Company. Join us in our passion for the ultimate tequila.
To the good life, to the pure life, Pura Vida!
“In my seven years of judging at
the Spirits of Mexico event,
I can’t recall a brand of tequila
performing better.”

The Best Damn Tequila Billy’s Ever Tasted
To understand how Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), multi-platinum rock and roll
Hall of Famer, wound up in the tequila business with Stewart Skloss,
entrepreneur Texas Maverick and Founder of The Pura Vida Tequila
Company, you have to go back in time to the 1990’s and belly up to the
bar at a place known to most folks around there simply as “The
Cadillac.” It’s a Texas tradition that started in Nuevo Laredo,
Mexico, and continues to this very day. It was there beneath the
wailing guitars, surrounded by a dazzling display of tequilas, that
Billy F. Gibbons and Stewart L. Skloss, tequila aficionados in their
own right and long-time friends, formed the partnership that powers
the Pura Vida Tequila Company.
Billy and Stewart each had a long love affair with tequila, but when
they learned they both shared a passion for discovering the
ultimate tequila, they joined forces to create the company that
in a few short years has kicked the door to the establishment
down, winning tasting competitions on both sides of the Border
and opening eyes from Coast to Coast. Now
the small batch craft brand they created
is growing up and turning into a force to
be reckoned with as the line of Pura Vida
Tequila expressions now includes an
Extra Añejo that’s winning awards and
opening eyes as fast as the first three
expressions did when they first appeared.
And with the acquisition of the exclusive
U.S. distribution rights for NARANJA,
the very same Mexican premium
orange liqueur used to make the first
margarita back in 1941, the sky’s the
limit for this growing line of exquisite
batch craft tequilas, spirits, and
mixers.
Billy’s love of fine tequila put him
on a path to find the very best this seductive Mexican spirit has to
offer, ultimately leading him to the world of Pura Vida. Though his fastpaced rock and roll lifestyle keeps him on the road and on stage most
of the time, he still manages to slow down enough to enjoy his favorite
elixir, Pura Vida Tequila; the best damn tequila he’s ever had.
“Let the good times roll, the really good times! With all due sincerity,
this is best damn tequila I have ever tasted!” ~ Billy F. Gibbons
8:15 Pura Vida Tequila Time
Sully Erna, quintessential frontman of the rock band Godsmack, started a new
tradition that’s taking the rock world by storm - 8:15, Pura Vida Tequila Time.
Fans everywhere are taking a moment at 8:15 pm every
day, no matter where they are, to raise a toast to the
good life with Pura Vida Tequila.
“The idea of 8:15 came about traveling the country
touring with my band, Godsmack,” explains Erna.
“Because our stage time was 8:30pm, my band mates,
a few girls from the production office, and I would get
together around 8:15 every night and cheers with a
shot of tequila and the cheer ‘Happy 8:15!!’”
One day before “Tequila Time,” Erna heard one
of the girls in production had received some bad
news and wasn’t having a good day. He made a
sign for her that said, “The Now is here, the past
is gone, so whatever has happened is already
behind you - “This Too Shall Pass!” He hung it
on his mirror for everyone to read as words
of encouragement and to lift her spirits.
She did her 8:15 shot with the group and had a
great night afterwards. “At that point I began to write
little messages of inspiration every day for people to read and
look forward to our daily 8:15 tequila toast,” continues Erna. It wasn’t
long before word spread to other production people and other bands on
the tour to meet at Sully’s dressing room at 8:15 to do a shot of tequila. “I
opened my dressing room door everyday around 8:10 to let friends in, and
day after day the group waiting outside my room got larger and larger,
spreading through the tour until there were 10, 20, 30 people crammed
into my dressing room every night,” Sully explains, “8:15 became a sort of
phenomenon.”
Word of the 8:15 tradition rapidly spread outside the tour world and was
picked up by Stewart Skloss, founder of Pura Vida Tequila, and his friend Billy
F. Gibbons of ZZ Top. A shipment of the award-winning Pura Vida Tequila
was promptly sent to Sully Erna on tour with a message, “We applaud your
daily affirmations at 8:15 and encourage you to take it to the next level with
the best damn tequila in the world.” A partnership was born and Pura Vida
Tequila joined the rock tradition.
“Every day at 8:15, people around the world will know it’s time to grab their
Pura Vida Tequila and rock the shot! It’s the new 4:20” ~ Sully Erna
It’s Not a Margarita
Without Pura Vida
PURA VIDA
ULTIMATE MARGARITA
2 oz Pura Vida Reposado or Silver Tequila
1 oz Pura Vida NARANJA Orange Liqueur
1 oz Fresh lime juice
Pura Vida Agave Nectar to taste
Everyone knows margaritas come from Mexico, but what they
may not know is the secret ingredient in every authentic Mexican
margarita is the premium orange liqueur known in America
simply as “NARANJA.” Distilled in Mexico since 1933 under a
different name, NARANJA is at once gentle and intense, warm and
refreshing, bitter and sweet. Known for its refined balance, it’s the
cornerstone of every authentic margarita, and perfect for mixing
in a myriad of cocktails.
To understand the significance of NARANJA and its rich
Mexican history, we must turn back the pages of time to
the creation of the very first margarita back in October of
1941, at Hussong’s Cantina in Ensenada, Mexico, by Don
Carlos Orozco. It’s said one particularly slow afternoon
Don Carlos was experimenting with mixing new drinks
when a prestigious visitor arrived – Margarita Henkel,
daughter of the German ambassador. Don Carlos
offered his newest creation to Miss Margarita to taste
and she was so taken by it he decided to name it “La
Margarita” in her honor, as she was the first person
ever to drink one. Legend has it that first margarita
was little more than a mixture of equal parts tequila,
NARANJA, and lime; shaken and served over ice in a
salt-rimmed glass.
The margarita grew to become the number one cocktail
in the entire United States, with a loyal following
reaching to all corners of the globe.
NARANJA is the secret ingredient necessary for
any authentic Mexican Margarita, and for nearly a
century this premium orange liqueur was available
only in Mexico, but the secret is out, thanks to The
Pura Vida Tequila Company, and now margarita lovers
everywhere can make margaritas taste like they do in
Mexico with NARANJA.
Bloody Mary Maria Mix
Bloody Marys (made with vodka) and Bloody Marias (made with tequila)
have always been the “go-to” cocktail for brunch and special occasions. Our
mixer takes all the guesswork out of making these perfect cocktails. Unlike
traditional bloody mary mixes, El Guapo’s powerful blend of citrus and
spices complement both your favorite craft vodka and Pura Vida Tequila. El
Guapo’s Bloody Mary Maria Mixer is zesty and ready to mix it up.
Sangrita
El Guapo’s Pura Vida Handmade Sangrita is the perfect companion to one of
life’s most distinguished pleasures - Pura Vida Tequila. Based on traditional
Sangrita recipes from the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico and dating back to the
1920’s, Pura Vida’s secret family recipe is a powerful blend of tomato juice,
lime juice, orange juice and spices. It provides the perfect complement to
the nuanced flavors of Pura Vida Tequilas. El Guapo’s Handmade Sangrita has
earned its gourmet status by being prepared in small, boutique batches using
only the finest all-natural ingredients.
Pura Vida Agave nectars
Pura Vida Agave Nectar is a 100% organic, all-natural sweetener. Bottled
from the source in Jalisco, Pura Vida Agave Nectars are a healthy, natural
choice, both gluten and allergen free, with a low Glycemic Index so you
can avoid the energy spikes of other sugars. Whether sweetening your
coffee, or your favorite cocktails, agave nectar is 1.4 times sweeter than
sugar for less calories and more flavor.
Don Pancho Coffee Liqueur
When perfectly selected Mexican coffee and the purest of natural sugar cane are combined the outcome is
rich, sweet and thick Don Pancho.
Don Pancho Coffee Liqueur is made from the finest 100%, hand-selected Arabica coffee beans and flavorful
sugar cane spirit, both grown in the hills of Veracruz and processed in small batches at the La Madrillena
distillery - the same distillery that’s been making NARANJA since 1933.
The journey from pure sugar cane and hand-selected coffee beans to the deliciously decadent Don
Pancho Coffee Liqueur is a long one... but the final product is well worth the time.
The coffee, harvested from October to March, is air-dried and the external papery layer called the
husk is removed. The dried coffee is aged for at least six months, then roasted to perfection in
small lots, ground and brewed to meet our unique taste profile.
Once the sugar cane is ready for harvest, it’s crushed and the juice is collected. Crystalline sugar is
extracted from the reduced juice, and the resulting molasses is fermented to begin the distillation
process until it reaches its final proof.
Finally, the coffee extract is combined with the sugar cane spirit as well as vanilla and caramel
before it rests for eight weeks and is ready to be filtered, bottled and enjoyed.
In a cocktail, in coffee or alone over ice, Don Pancho is always right.
