THE MUSIC IN GEORGE’S HEAD
George Gershwin Creates Rhapsody in Blue
Written by SUZANNE SLADE
Illustrated by STACY INNERST
G
eorge Gershwin heard music all the time—classical, ragtime, blues,
and jazz—at home, at school, even on New York City’s busy streets.
With rhythmic swirls of words and pictures, author Suzanne Slade and
illustrator Stacy Innerst reveal how brilliantly Gershwin combined various
kinds of music to create his masterpiece, Rhapsody in Blue. A surprising
whirlwind composition of notes, sounds, and one long wail of a clarinet,
Rhapsody is a musical representation of America’s melting pot. Includes an
author’s note, timeline, and bibliography.

BLOOD BROTHER
Jonathan Daniels and His
Sacrifice for Civil Rights
Written by RICH WALLACE and SANDRA NEIL WALLACE
I
n 1965, Jonathan Daniels, a white seminary student from New
Hampshire, answered Martin Luther King Jr.’s call and traveled to
Selma, Alabama, to help with voter registration of black residents. He
remained in “Bloody Lowndes,” an extremely dangerous county for white
freedom fighters, to assist civil rights workers. Five months later, Jonathan
Daniels was killed while saving the life of Ruby Sales, a black teenager.
To tell Daniels’s riveting life story, Rich Wallace and Sandra Neil Wallace
relied on letters, papers, photographs, and taped interviews, most that have
never been published before. They explore the events that led Daniels to
the moment of his death, the trial of his murderer, and how these events
impacted the legal and political climate of the American South and the
nation. Includes an authors’ note, research note, timeline, bibliography,
source notes, and index.
RICH WALLACE has written more than three dozen novels for children and teenagers.
His acclaimed middle-grade nonfiction book, Babe Conquers the World, was co-written
with his wife, Sandra Neil Wallace. Visit richwallacebooks.com.

“Jonathan Daniels has been an important figure in my life—his sacrifice and
his work. His extraordinary heroism and commitment to realizing equality in
practice, not just in law, remind us to light a candle in the darkness and say we
are not going to give up; we’re going to do something.”
—Ken Burns, filmmaker
“This well-told tale of Jonathan Daniels—one of the most courageous figures
of an earlier civil rights movement—comes at a generational moment when
America needs to hear this story.”
—Cornell William Brooks, president, NAACP
“Everyone, young and old, should read this book and find a trace of themselves
in the life of Jonathan Daniels. His story reminds us that we can all be heroes.”
—Sy Montgomery, National Book Award finalist and Sibert Medal winner

hen the U.S. Cavalry raids twelve-year-old Casita’s Lipan Apache
village in El Remolino, Mexico, her life changes forever. With
most of her people either killed or captured, Casita and her younger
brother are sent to Fort Clark to live with an adoptive white family.
There Casita desperately struggles to adjust to military life and to a family
determined to “civilize” her. But at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in
Pennsylvania, where students are forced to lose their Indian ways, Casita
discovers how important it is to hold onto her Lipan Apache traditions.
In the third novel in the Hidden Histories series, Michaela MacColl
uncovers the complicated worlds of the Lipan Apache, Fort Clark, and
the Carlisle Indian School of the late 1800s. In Casita, she has created a
heroine who wrestles with both her past and the obligations of family, a
girl whose courage and determination are impossible to forget.

his book contains absolutely no dragons—none whatsoever! Not even
a claw nor a flame nor any large, pointy scales. But readers will know
better—and enjoy being in on the joke—as a carefree mouse narrator
invites them (not) to look for hidden (and not-so-hidden) dragons on every
page, eventually revealing a flock of fire-breathers that chase the mouse to
the very end of the book-within-a-book. Readers will love the humorous

GOOD NIGHT, BAT!

Written and Illustrated by PAUL MEISEL

at thinks he has found a perfect new home. Except there’s one slight
problem— Squirrel already lives there! Since bats sleep during the day
and squirrels sleep at night, the unlikely roommates start trading notes.
Bug off! writes Squirrel. So Bat piles his bugs neatly in the corner. Leave
my house! writes Squirrel. So Bat piles new leaves on her cozy home. In
time, Bat’s cheery and kind responses to Squirrel’s snarky notes warm
Squirrel’s heart, leading to a new friendship she never knew she wanted.
Packed with silly humor and written in clear, easy-to-read text, this
friendship story with a twist gently teaches that outward differences don’t
matter when new friends take the time to get to know each other.

ast-But-Not-Least Lola is feeling like Left-Behind Lola. Her best
friends are traveling to exotic places for Thanksgiving, but she’s stuck
at home, feeling less than thankful. Her overworked Mom and Dad and
busy brother don’t have time for her. She offers to take care of her friends’
dogs—without asking Mom and Dad—but they create havoc. Adding to
Lola’s worries is a growing hair knot that already seems to be the size of
the state of Texas. With trouble enough to fill Texas, Lola thinks that
maybe she should just move there . . . until she realizes that her troubles
are better untangled than not.
Irresistible heroine Lola returns in this latest entry in the pitch perfect

his zany and hilarious picture book stars two animals—Cat and
Duck—who just can’t see eye to eye. Instead of quacking, Duck
would rather meow . . . or squawk . . . or moo. Cat repeatedly insists that
ducks are supposed to quack—and only quack! But however hard he tries,
Cat can’t get Duck to behave as he thinks he should. The snappy, laughout-loud text, written entirely in dialogue, is paired with simple, quirky
illustrations brimming over with humor and personality, resulting in a
delightfully silly story that begs for multiple readings. Perfect for emerging

surprising results. The hill remembers the icy, chilly day that Jack and Jill

a character, whether he fell while skateboarding on a wall, as his classmate

CATCHING A STORYFISH
Written by JANICE N. HARRINGTON
K
eet’s grandfather teases Keet that she can talk the whiskers off a
catfish. But when her family moves from Alabama to Illinois, things
are even worse than she expected. The kids at her new school laugh at
Keet’s southern accent, and suddenly, talkative Keet doesn’t want to talk
at all. But on weekend fishing jaunts, Keet’s wise grandfather encourages
her to listen to the whole wide world and to the “storyfish” inside her.
And a new friend at school helps Keet gradually feel more at home. When
tragedy strikes, Keet must use her catfish ears and dive deep inside herself
as she tries to make things right. In this luminous, moving novel in verse,
Keet listens for her storyfish and ultimately finds her voice.

GARVEY’S CHOICE
Written by NIKKI GRIMES

arvey’s father doesn’t see him for who he is—a complex, book-loving,
brave soul. Garvey’s father instead sees a son who should talk sports,
play sports, and love sports (never mind that Garvey’s sister is the athlete
in the family). Garvey knows he’s a disappointment to his father, and he
tries to fill the father-sized hole in his spirit with food. Overweight and
out of shape, Garvey has only one friend and is teased mercilessly by kids
at school. Then Garvey’s friend suggests that ever-humming Garvey join
the chorus. Even though he’s afraid of even more teasing, Garvey bravely
chooses to join—and discovers a new talent and a new language that his
father, finally, can understand.
This beautiful novel in verse by award-winning author Nikki Grimes is
written entirely in tankas, which, like haiku, are easy to experiment with.
The book also includes an author’s note about tankas.
