The SMBA mails this quarterly newsletter to the SMBA membership, music associations, other non-profit organizations, promoters, radio and print media at no charge. All correspondence can be mailed to: SMBA, c/o Mike Foster, 574 Myrtle Ct., Hbg, PA 17112. www.sevenmountainsbluegrass.org INSIDE THE SMBA THE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE DICK BECKLEY As I'm writing this President's Message, I just returned from 4 days of quality good ol' traditional Bluegrass at Gettysburg. Rich seems to have taken my advice on returning to the norm and eliminating the fringe and Americana types from the lineup there, and the results show. I think the May and August 2014 festivals just might be the best attended in years. The last 3 festivals have returned to the more traditional mode, a source of great satisfaction to me and our attending members. Highlights of the festival were outstanding performances by the Gibson Brothers and Blue Highway on Thursday, US Navy Bluegrass Band and the Farm Hands on Friday, and the Del McCoury Band on Saturday. Topping this off were great Saturday and Sunday performances by the Seldom Scene and the James King Band. Although my longtime friend James King has been and is still very ill, he performed remarkably and even got together with Don Rigsby and Dudley Connell for some Longview numbers which to me, was the highlight of the weekend. James remains very ill and is in need of a liver transplant. I ask that you keep him in your prayers. Several members and former SMBA members expressed concern to me at Gettysburg that they were or had been in arrears of their SMBA membership and had ceased to receive our newsletters. They complained that they had received no notice of impending renewal. I explained that there is a renewal form in each issue of our quarterly newsletter and that dues are due for renewal on or before January 1 of each year and we send out no other renewal notice. I also explained that if new members joined after Sept 1, they would not be considered in arrears until January 1 of the following year. I have long felt that this procedure needs tweaking and will again bring this up at our November Board Meeting for consideration. Stay tuned on this for more at a later date! The Original Seldom Scene has been selected for induction into the Bluegrass Hall of Fame this year, which to me, is long overdue. I lobbied unsuccessfully for the induction of my friend, the great Mike Auldridge into the Hall a few years ago in hopes that he would be elected while still alive. At least now, Mike is getting a part of his just due by being inducted with John Duffey, John Starling, Ben Eldridge and Tom Gray, however too late for him to be able to savor this while still on earth! Page 3 More of our membership have been contributing to our scholarship fund as they renew their dues with an extra amount added for that purpose. There is a space for this inclusion on our renewal notice if you desire to contribute. These funds are used to send deserving youngsters up to 18 years to various bluegrass camps or for private lessons. I also invite all of our members to reach out to a youngster to let them know of this program if they have interest in furthering their musical interests in bluegrass. Our picnic in July was one of the best of all we have had. It was a lovely day with great food, good company, 2 great performances by the Farm Hands, and plenty of jamming. Folks were grouped in several areas of the grounds in small groups jamming and others took advantage of using our sound system before, in-between and after the 2 sets of music by the Farm Hands. If you were not in attendance, you missed a wonderful day of fun and entertainment. Our picnic remains one of the biggest bargains I know of at $22 per person for a great meal, fine dessert, and a great band performing. We presented Bill Aldinger with the first lifetime membership award and a plaque signifying this, at the picnic. Bill agreed to serve as President some years back when there was little interest in anyone assuming this office and at a time when our Association was in need of leadership and easily could have ceased to exist. The picnic was his vision and he started the picnic about 12 years ago and was our only Chairman until George Fishel took over last year. Bill continues to be very active in all SMBA activities and is still lending a hand to the picnic preparations under George's Chairmanship. I can think of no one more deserving of this award than Bill! The start of our 2014-15 Concert Season is nearing, the first show scheduled for Oct 11. We will have 10 shows on the calendar this year, on the 2nd Saturday of each month and the 2 months in which we have a 5th Saturday, November and January. Please join us at these concerts for the best in National Touring Acts. Our schedule is posted on our website and in this newsletter. To check this out simply enter www.bluegrass-museum.org, click on membership and giving, on the list of options on the left side of your screen. Then scroll down again to associations under membership and giving, again on the left of the screen. There are 5 associations currently listed there at the bottom of the Assn. Membership blurb. We are one of them. Then again go to the list on the left of your screen and click on Worldwide Bluegrass. Click again on the left under Worldwide Bluegrass on Bluegrass Associations and scroll down to Seven Mountains. This is a link to our website. A well spent donation to IBMM on our part as we get the benefit of a worldwide link to our website, national recognition as a member association and we help in funding the activities of the IBMM. This is an outstanding museum and one that the bluegrass community and our members can be proud of, and a destination worth the trip for anyone interested in bluegrass and it's history. Dick Beckley Get the newsletter in color at: http://sevenmountainsbluegrass.org/newsletters/ Attention SMBA members that play in a bluegrass band If you’re a SMBA member and play in a bluegrass band you can add your band to the list of available bluegrass bands. This list will be added to the newsletter much like the jam section toward the rear of the newsletter. It will provide one place for anyone that needs a bluegrass band for that special occasion to find contact information for the band. Please send your information to the newsletter editor. Page 4 SMBA CONCERT BAND BIOS - WRITTEN BY DICK BECKLEY October 11—Feller & Hill Our October opening band for the 2014 -15 Season will be Feller & Hill. Tom Feller and Chris Hill started this fine band a few years back and their sound will bring back memories of the Boys From Indiana as they both have ties to that famous group of the 70's and 80's. Chris even told me last year at IBMA that they were working on a 65 song chronology of the Boys, the release date yet to be determined down the road. Tom and Chris both have outstanding voices and their duets are memorable. They had a big hit last year charting with “Big Blue Roses” and recently, appropriately with “Government Blues”. Tom is excellent on mandolin and Chris plays a really strong banjo. You may remember him from his days with the great James King. Rounding out the rest of the Bluegrass Buckaroos are Mark Poe on Guitar and Glenn “Cookie” Inman also a James King Band Alumnus. November 8 - Audie Blaylock and Redline My good friend, Audie Blaylock and Redline will be our November Band. Audie is no stranger to our stage having performed here, perhaps more than any other band over the years. Audie and Redline are SMBA favorites and our crowd is always large and enthusiastic. Plan on getting here early for this one! Audie is non-stop bluegrass in the traditional mode of Jimmy Martin and packs a lot of music into a 45 minute set. He sets the pace on Guitar and lead vocals, joined by another SMBA favorite and local boy, Pat McAvinue on Fiddle and Vocals. The rest of Redline consists of Mitch Walker on banjo, Aaron Ramsey on Mandolin and either Jason Moore or Reed Jones on bass. Audie, over the last several years, has had quite a few of his songs on the charts and will be doing most of them for you. He's also one of the best at honoring your requests as the show progresses. Page 6 SMBA CONCERT BAND BIOS - WRITTEN BY DICK BECKLEY November 29 - Danny Paisley and Southern Grass Our second November show will be the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so come on out and work off all the extra pounds you have collected from the Thanksgiving table, and take a break from the early Holiday shopping for some fine bluegrass. Our band will be Danny Paisley and Southern Grass. Danny was scheduled last year and had to cancel for open heart surgery but is back better than ever. He brings to our stage a strictly traditional show which will delight our audience. Danny's voice is distinctive and easily recognizable and he will be performing many of his hits at this performance and will be on the guitar. Backing him will be his son, Ryan Paisley on mandolin, local boy Doug Meek on fiddle, Mark Delaney on banjo, and Eric Troutman on bass. Danny has also long been a favorite of SMBA attendees. Let's shake off the holiday bustle and come out for a great night of bluegrass for Danny and the band! December 13 - Boxcars Our December band will be the Boxcars, another band that has become an area favorite over the last several years. When the IBMA nominations come in they always garner quite a few and this year is no exception for this tight unit. Adam Steffey is on mandolin and vocals, Keith Garrett on guitar and lead vocal, Ron Stewart on banjo, fiddle and vocals, Harold Nixon on bass, and ETSU grad and newcomer Gary Hultman on Dobro. Their sound has changed a bit with the departure of founding member John Bowman to the Ministry of the Lord. Adam tells us that they felt they could not actually replace John so they decided to go in a different direction and instead, add the dobro and come up with a different sound, instead. I've listened to some of the new stuff and, even though I was a fan and friend of John's and will miss him performing, Gary's dobro brings to the stage something good, not previously heard at one of their concerts. This will be their 3rd consecutive booking at SMBA, but last year's concert was cancelled because of bad weather. Please help us welcome back the Boxcars with a full house for this one! Page 7 ANNOUNCEMENTS SMBA Scholarship Program While you young people are getting ready for school, keep in mind the scholarship program here at the Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association. We will have numerous awards of $250 per student to go toward music lessons or music camp. We had four recipients this year and hope to have as many this coming year. You adults are encourage to let 18 year olds and younger know about our scholarship program. See page 2 for more details. Walt Crider Scholarship Chairman A very good article about our organization in the latest Bluegrass Unlimited Magazine A Tribute to Mike Auldridge There is an excellent article in the October 2014 Acoustic Guitar magazine written by Orville Johnson entitled "Dobros Amigos" which has a subheading "Two years after his death, Mike "Auldridge's final collaboration celebrates the Dobro great's genius." This is a good article concerning Mike. Glen Miller Thank you Henry Koretzky for your wellwritten article about SMBA that was published in Bluegrass Unlimited magazine. Page 8 SMBA PICNIC On July 26, the 2014 SMBA annual picnic was held once again at the Allenberry Inn and Playhouse pavilion in Boiling Springs, PA. The SMBA picnic continues to provide something for everyone and it made for a really enjoyable day of fellowship with the membership. As always, the Heinz family from Allenberry served up a great meal. There was a lot of music being shared from the pickers in the jams and the Farm Hands provided some quality music under the pavilion. Even the weather cooperated this year as we had reasonable temperatures, a slight breeze, and sunny skies. The crowd was a slightly less than in previous years, but we had a good time just the same. The open jams continued on throughout the day and into the evening. The raffle tickets were pulled late in the afternoon with a record number of items to give away. Thank you, to George Fishel, Bill and Jan Aldinger, and Jean Snyder for organizing this year’s picnic, and to Nelson Steffy for managing the sound for the Farm Hands. All-in-all, a good time was had. We’re looking forward to 2015 picnic. If you’d like to help in the planning or have any suggestions, please send them to Dick Beckley, president of SMBA. Thank you.
