th 8 Annual Fall Conference SATURDAY - SEPTEMBER 6, 2014 High-Risk Infant and Child Development NICU through the School Years Kiwanis International 3636 Woodview Trace Indianapolis, IN 46268 Register Online! www.islha.org PH: (317) 916-4146 Coordinating the Intervention Services for Children who are Medically-Complex: A Pediatrician's Perspective— Louise Tetrick, MD Speech Pathologists are often referred to by medical professionals, especially pediatricians. With this presentation, the SLP and Audiologist will understand the role of the pediatrician and how they, as the child’s primary care providers, take the lead in the coordination of intervention for children who are medically-complex. Their assessment, intervention, and referral procedures will be explained. The audience will also identify and understand the many conditions that cause speechlanguage and hearing deficits. The Role of the SLP in the NICU Ensuring Positive Outcomes—Catherine (Cassie) Seitz and Mary Ewing Speech Pathologists are often an integral part in the evaluation and treatment of infants and children with feeding and swallowing difficulties. Without a sound understanding of neonatal development, age appropriate behaviors, respiratory function and gastrointestinal development, comprehensive evaluation and treatment is difficult. This course will provide an overview of the NICU, the role of the SLP and the challenges presented by the infants that may impact long-term outcomes. From Birth to Adulthood: What Audiologists Should Know about NICU Infants and NICU Survivors – Ms. Kelly Baroch Ms. Baroch’s presentation focuses on audiologic care of the NICU infant and graduate across the life span. NICU admissions are rising as more premature and medically complex infants are surviving. NICU infants are at increased risk for hearing loss as well as auditory processing and vestibular disturbances which may not be apparent until later in childhood. With the first group of modern-era NICU graduates entering their 3rd and 4th generations of life, new research may have some asking just how long the “long term effects” of premature birth and NICU care may be. Transitioning from First Steps to Early Childhood in the Public Schools—Katie Davis The transition from First Steps to the public school Early Childhood Program is a big one for families. Services are no longer provided in the comfort of home and move to the local school corporation. This presentation will help professionals and families prepare for this transition by learning what to expect during this transition from the evaluation to the IEP and case conference meeting to what a typical school day may look like. Preparing for this transition not only eases anxiety for the families, but starts the relationship with schools on the right foot.
