B Medallic Art Company has been creating chains of office exclusively in the United States since 1903. Call us today to learn how we can help you customize this lasting symbol of esteem for you and your institution. A Extra chain link between banners and a custom shape for the medal makes The King’s University chain unique. Southwestern Oklahoma State University included its mascot on this antiqued bronze chain. Bishop State Community College repeated the seal image on smaller rounds on this 24-karat gold-plated chain. Carroll College added selective gold plating to the silver-plated custom-shaped medal. D C E “The medallions turned out beautiful! Thank you again for doing such a wonderful job and making our short deadline. It was a joy to work with you.” — Michelle Glush, The King’s University 2 Call 1-800-843-9854 or email us at minted@medallic.com A leaf surround complements the Guilford Technical Community College seal. L Temple University added symbolic engravings and a reverse image on the medal to show its history and areas of education. Comfortably Wear Your Chain of Office K The most comfortable way to wear a chain of office is by balancing the length of the chain on the shoulders to offset the weight of the chain’s front. You can do this by sewing Velcro, buttons or hooks onto the shoulders of your garment to secure the chain in position. Ask about our optional stabilizing chain link, which attaches to the upper part of the inside of the chain, and when worn behind the neck, helps to position the chain properly. College of Saint Mary used both its seal and a logo representing a sculpture located on campus. M 4 N South Puget Sound Community College honored its history by engraving the initials of the former college names on rounds. Call 1-800-843-9854 or email us at minted@medallic.com O St. Louis University added ribbon rather than chain to create a unique look. See the ribbon selection on page 21. How to Build your Chain A smaller diestruck version of your seal medal can be added to your chain, reinforcing your commitment to heritage. The rounds, squares, rectangles and shields can be die-struck components. Fully Customizable The chain of office artfully encompasses an institution’s heritage and identity, which is why we provide you numerous ways to customize your chain to represent your unique legacy. • Choose Your Metal Bronze Choose the metal that’s most appropriate – 24-karat gold-plated, silver, antiqued silver-plated or antiqued bronze. You can even mix two types of metals to achieve a look that best represents your institution. Gold-plated Silver-plated • Choose Your Components Your chain may contain traditional elements such as the leaf cluster, fleur-de-lis, lamp of knowledge or helping hands components. You may also wish to add customized elements using our shapes (below) for engraving or die-striking words or images that are significant to your institution, such as a university symbol, a mascot, the institution’s motto, names or previous presidents, or any other item unique to you. 1. Leaf cluster Logos, mottos, individual school names, historic seals or other images can be engraved on the larger chain components. Honor past and current presidents or other leaders by engraving names and service dates on the curved and leaf banners. 2. Fleur-de-lis 5. Leaf banner 8. Round 3. Lamp 6. Curved banner 4. Hands 7. Book banner 10. Rectangle 9. Square 11. Shield • Create a Custom Shape We can design a new component to create a one-of-a-kind look for your chain. • Create Your Medallion The centerpiece of every chain we make is the medallion. We take great care in representing your seal, logo, historic buildings or founders in exquisite detail and relief. • Choose Your Chain Link Style Even the style of the chain itself can reinforce your school’s identity. NOTE: Components and chain link not sold separately. A. Simple chain B. Medallic Art Company combines the finest materials and quality workmanship to create an original work of art that establishes an enduring legacy of leadership for your institution. B C A Our Lady of Holy Cross preferred silverplated brass components on this classic 42” mahogany mace. This 42” mahogany mace provides timeless style. Reverse Northwest Florida State College honored its history by having 4” diameter medals made of its current and historic seals. The college used a classic design as a starting point and added banners engraved with its tenets on the staff of this 42” tall dark walnut mace. 6 Call 1-800-843-9854 or email us at minted@medallic.com D F E F George Mason University added a brass wreath to the top of this 42” cherrywood mace. Waynesburg University sought a traditional look in this 44” dark walnut mace topped with a brass flame. South Texas College designed its own mace, seeking a unique look. Four different medals and additional engraved platforms on this 48” cherrywood mace allow the institution to honor its history and values. Lapis disks on the McNeese State University mace make it truly one of a kind. If you are seeking a unique look for your mace, be sure to ask about the materials and design options we can provide. “I enjoyed working with you on this project. Please thank everyone at Medallic involved with the project. The mace turned out beautifully and arrived on time for the spring graduation ceremonies.” — Tom Matthews, South Texas College Order now to ensure delivery for your event • www.medallic.com 7 Ceremonial Maces J H I G In this 42” mahogany mace with brass accents, Centennial College pieced sections of other mace designs together to create a design that truly reflects its values. Close-up of mace head This 42” allbrass mace showcases a doublesided 5” diameter medal. University of Detroit Mercy wanted to use this classic design for the body of its mace but wanted the seal medal to stand on its own. Sacred Heart University adapted an existing design to craft this magnificent 54” tall rosewood mace with brass accents and silverplated medals. Friends University combined elements from existing designs to craft this elegant 60” tall cherrywood mace with silverplated accents. 8 Call 1-800-843-9854 or email us at minted@medallic.com Stock Maces Pressed for Time? The traditional look of our stock maces and macettes complement any medal or seal design and can be made available more quickly if you have an approaching event. If we have already made a die for you, we can mint a new medal for the head of the mace. Or you can choose to engrave one of our stock medals (see the selection on pages 18-19) with your seal, other imagery or wording. The 42” style stock mace allows for two medals to be mounted onto the wood disk on top. The 24” style stock mace has a medal mounted on top and brass foot that can be silver- or goldplated. Reverse The 14” style stock macette allows for a smaller medal mounted on top and brass foot that can be silver- or gold-plated. Clearwater Central Catholic High School had a rapidly approaching event when the school requested a new mace. With a previously engraved 50th anniversary stock medal and just enough time to create a new seal medal, we were able to meet the event date using a 42” cherrywood stock mace adapted with a brass foot. Stock maces and macettes are available in cherrywood or dark walnut. Changes or additions are only available if time permits. The top can be engraved or have a medal attached. When Smaller is Better Macettes and batons are perfect when a more personal size is needed. The smaller size makes them lighter and easier to carry for longer periods of time. If some of your institution’s ceremonies make it difficult to use your larger mace, a smaller duplicate will help you maintain the pomp and circumstance of important events. Macettes and batons will also be cherished as gifts to donors and departing leadership. C D A Faculty and leaders of The University of Southern California use this 17” dark walnut macette during convocation ceremonies. B This 22” oak baton makes a simple-yet-bold statement with its elegant metal topper and finial. This 24” dark walnut macette is a miniature of a larger mace for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. E 10 Call 1-800-843-9854 or email us at minted@medallic.com Though Medallic Art Company did not craft the original, we were able to recreate this 19” oak baton for Prince George’s Community College. How to Build your Mace Full Custom Design Every aspect of your ceremonial mace or macette can be customized to fit your school’s needs, style, and budget. You can choose from one of our popular styles, customizing with your school’s seal, logos, and mottos, or you can use some existing styles as a starting point to create something a little different by changing the head, staff or foot. You can also create a completely new mace or macette to better represent your institution. You choose the materials, the size, any additional custom elements, and the stand that best displays your mace when it’s not in use. You can even add engravable banners or other elements to make your ceremonial mace or macette wholly unique to your institution. • Choose a Head Style The head of the mace can showcase a single medallion on the front of a disk or several medallions honoring a long history. Additions like a wreath or flame provide a traditional academic look if desired. An engravable metal platform can be added to some styles. Contact a Medallic Art Company design consultant to discuss your needs and the options available. • Create Your Medallions The focus of a mace will most often be your medallions. Traditionally designed after a school’s seal, the medallions could also showcase important themes, buildings, leaders or other elements of significance to your institution. • Choose a Staff Style The staff of your mace or macette can be very modest or as ornate as you can imagine. Engravable metal sections or banners can be added to honor your institution’s beliefs, leaders, donors, academic programs or separate campuses. • Choose Your Materials Choose the metal and wood that best represents your institution. Metal can be antiqued bronze, 24-karat gold-plated, or antiqued silver-plated. You can even use two types of metals to provide contrast. The most popular wood choices are shown below, but special requests may be available. Metal Choices Bronze Goldplated Silverplated Get Started Early Because of the level of customization and attention to detail required to craft your mace or macette, it is best to begin working on the design at least two months in advance. Wood Choices Dark Walnut Natural Walnut Cherrywood Mahogany Pine Oak • Choose a Mace Stand A mace stand displays and protects your mace while it is not in use. The mace stand is made to order to fit your custom mace. See page 13 to see the options available. • Choose a Foot Style Some exotic woods available for additional charge. The final touch on your custom mace or macette should reflect the overall style. The foot can be made of metal or wood to carry out the look and function you need. A medal design can be used for everything from chain components, to cuff links, to lapel pins, to awards or even graduation medals. All of your Medallic Art Company pieces can share the same art designs, which reinforces the prestige of your institution. Dr. Welch of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science wears a newly crafted chain of office created with an existing medal design. “The piece is gorgeous! Dr. Welch is thrilled, as we all are. And, thank you for all of your efforts ... making this happen in the tight time-frame we were working in!” — Jennifer Cusick, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science maintains a consistent look by repeating its seal image on a chain of office and mace, both with a silverplated finish. Below, the university created a custom component for its chain using its signature “R” to further honor its heritage. The University of North Georgia created two seal images that are used on both the chain and the mace. Reverse 12 Call 1-800-843-9854 or email us at minted@medallic.com Display & Protect • Mace Stands • Chain Display Case A mace stand will display and protect your ceremonial mace or macette when it is not in use. Stands are made of solid wood or metal and wood to match the look, style, and size of your mace or macette. The locking cherrywood chain display case is made to protect and show off your beautiful investment. • Horizontal Mace Stand The horizontal stand is often used when the mace will be displayed on a shelf. “We received the mace stand last week and we are thrilled with the results!” — Caren L. Anthony, Anne Arundel Community College While Medallic Art did not craft the Anne Arundel Community College mace, we were able to construct a stand for it with engraved inscription plates. • Vertical Mace Stand • Chain Travel Case The vertical stand is used when the mace is displayed at floor level. This stand is useful on a stage when ceremonies are being performed after a procession. The chain travel case protects your chain from scratches or dents during transit. George Mason University added a brass back to its vertical stand. • Mace Travel Case Our durable mace travel case protects your investment when you need to travel. It is airlineapproved and lockable, with handles and built-in wheels for easy transport. • Base Mace Stand The 9” x 12” base stand is another floor-level display option that gives your mace a free-standing look. Your seal medal can be mounted to the front if desired. Give them an enduring symbol of the institution they love and of their time serving in office. These gifts are perfect for honoring the sacrifice and dedication of outgoing Presidents, Chancellors, Trustees, Regents, or Provosts. You can recognize them with a unique custom piece or you can use an existing piece to create a memorable gift. Arkansas Tech University presented its outgoing president with this ceremonial macette in honor of his 20 years of service to the institution. The University of Georgia added the ending tenure date of its retiring president onto a banner bearing his name and gifted the chain to him. The university then created a new chain for its incoming president. 14 Call 1-800-843-9854 or email us at minted@medallic.com Bethune-Cookman University used an existing medal design to create this gift for its retiring president. Many institutions recognize the service of their presidents or chancellors on banners added to chains. Commemorate the accomplishments of your departing leader by mounting one of these banners to a plaque with an inscription plate. See “Awards & Recognition” on pages 16-17 and “Presentation & Display” on page 22 for more ideas on creating memorable gifts for your departing leadership. If you have an existing medal design, you can strike a new medal and present it to your outgoing leaders as a show of appreciation for their dedication.
