Chesterbrook Academy Elementary and Middle School Winter Edition Inside this issue: Sochi Olympics Cheetah Showcase Book Review: Robinson Crusoe Spirit Week Cheeroff International Week Events Minecraft: Game Review The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games started on February 6 th, 2014. Sochi is a place in western Russia. This year’s Olympics contained fifteen sports. These sports were: Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Bobsled, Curling, Cross-Country Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Figure Skating, Hockey, Nordic Combined, Ski Jumping, Luge, Short Track, Snowboarding, Skeleton, and Speed Skating. In this year’s Olympics, there were twelve new events. The events were Ski Halfpipe – Men’s and Women’s, Women’s Ski Jumping, Biathlon Mixed Relay, Figure Skating Team Event, Luge Team Relay, Ski Slopestyle – Men’s and Women’s, Snowboard Slopestyle – Men’s and Women’s, and Snowboard Parallel Slalom. This Olympics, the temperature was really very high. Some of the temperatures reached the mid to upper 60s. This caused the athletes to change their strategies in tying to compete in the Olympics. The snow was soft, which made it hard to ski and snowboard. The indoor events, such as speed skating, figure skating, hockey, and curling, were not affected. Some of the athletes protested that they would not compete in those conditions, but that didn’t take full effect. It was one of the warmest Winter Olympics in a very long time. In outside events, athletes fell, had missed checkpoints (in Alpine Skiing), and lost medal chances because of the temperature and the terrain. This year, the Olympic medals were somewhat different. Close to half of the medal had a hole in it. On the medal, it said: “sochi.ru 2014” which stands for Sochi, Russia in the year of 2014. Then in a semi-circle around the left side of the medal, it said which event you won that medal. On the back of the medal, it showed the Olympic rings. -Matt Palmer and Kayla Sabet Ice Skating We go ice skating Snow is falling on the ice Ice skating with friends -Alison Webster page 2 Cheetah Chatter International POtluck Chesterbrook Academy, had an International Potluck Day during our Multicultural week. Our school had a potluck so the students could try foods from different countries. Gavin Flanagan, brought in a very sweet and delicious food, called Kugel. It is a type of sweet pasta with a cherry pie filling. Ishan Akhouri brought in a tray of delicious veggie samosas. Ishan also brought in a bottle of homemade mango lassi, a sweet mango milkshake drink. It was smooth and thick. Mihir brought in Lindt chocolates; they were thick and creamy, with milk chocolate filling. Ms. Z’s 2nd grade class brought in sweets and an Indian snack called pakora. Ms. T’s 2 nd grade class brought in sushi, German butter cookies, samosas, and Russian pancakes. Ms. Clay’s class brought in Irish Brownies, Korean Sushi, Rice and Beans, Dumplings, Hot Dogs, and Fried Rice. We had a great time enjoying delectable delicacies from all over the world. -Ishan Akhouri and Mihir Sanad International Reading Day The most interesting day during the Multicultural week was the performances day. Students and teachers performed songs and dances representing their culture. The participants were Mrs. Kaur, Sneha, Ojas, Greeshma, Mannat, and Mrs. O'Bryan. Sneha did an amazing Bollywood dance. Greeshma did a Marathi dance for the song "Aika dajiba". Ojas recited an informative poem about India. Mannat danced to a northern Indian folk dance called "Maiya Yashoda". Mrs. O'Bryan performed the song called "The Prayer" by Andrea Boccielli. The performers had a lot of fun performing in front of the students. They were all very interesting. The audience had a very enjoyable time watching the performances. They also got to participate during Ms. Kaur’s “Punjabi” song performance. The show lasted about an hour, but it felt much shorter than that because we were all having a lot of fun. - Matt Palmer and Ahlam Mohamed International Reading Day is a day when teachers read books from all around the world in their class. The main reason they do this is to educate their students on the kind of books read half way across the world as well as to expose them to different forms of literature. International reading day was a blast. Kindergarten read The Korean Cinderella and The Egyptian Cinderella, sounds like a classic! First Grade read different stories from around the world and also discussed the cultures of the books they read. Second Grade read a book called “Book’s from around the world”, a series of multi-cultural books combined into one big book. They even went as far to paint pictures of themselves. This year I think 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade read really good books. I may even read some on those books. This year I think the teachers did really well in choosing the books. This event is one of my favorites in the school year. -Tyler Ross Sabet Snowflakes We all love snowflakes. When winter comes snowflakes fall. We all want snowflakes. -Lola Danier page 3 Cheetah Chatter The younger students at Chesterbrook had a winter concert. It included all of my favorite Christmas and holiday songs. It is an amazing experience and one of the best concerts of the year. It is so much fun to attend! The students get you into the songs with all of their energy and passion. The song selection was an intelligent choice, it wasn’t too hard for the kids, yet it was very amazing and fun to watch. The songs preformed were Sleigh Ride, Santa Clause is Coming to Town, Jingle Bell Rock, Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Let it Snow, Snow Day. The participating classes in the Winter Musical were: Ms. Z and Ms. T’s first second grade class, Ms. Clay’s first grade class, Ms.Oh’s kindergarten class, Ms. Agrestas kindergarten class, Ms. Marandas kindergarten class, and Ms. Mustafa’s Pre K class. The winter musical was full of energy and wonderful voices. We were all very impressed with the children who performed this extravagant concert! Snow day was Kayla and my favorite song, the reason why is because we heard all of the kids voices and their jubilant year! It is a must see show. -Kayla Sabet and Matthew Cerniglia Korean Translations of English Words Cheetah Cheer off! Junior kindergarten through eighth grade competes for the spirit stick and the trophy. All of the students and teachers worked hard making and practicing their cheers. Each cheer/ dance was original and had its own special features. In the cheer off we saw a lot of performance that were funny and interesting. We saw Ms. Z’s class do a phenomenal job of “What Does the Cheetah Say.” Ms. O’Bryan’s class did a great job with “Applause.” This year the fourth grade won the spirit stick. They worked really hard to practice their cheer. It was a wonderful experience watching all of the grades do their cheer. They truly deserved this award. All of Chesterbrook community had been showing their school spirit by dressing up in ways they normally wouldn’t. There were others that were fun and funny such as middle school's performance. During the week we had twin day, mismatch day, jersey day, and school spirit day. We also had an award for the most school spirit, which is the cheetah trophy. This year Miss Oh’s kindergarten class won the cheetah trophy for maximum participation. They truly had a lot of spirit and dressed up for each of the theme. - Gavin Flanagan and Sneha Satapathy page 4 Cheetah Chatter Before the Performance This year Chesterbrook Academy hosted the third Cheetah Showcase. The Cheetah Showcase is where children from third through eighth grade showcased their talents. The showcase was on Friday, February 7, 2014. Students practiced their performances, created art pieces as well as creative writing pieces. There was dancing, singing, people playing instruments and acting! Coach Curt was appointed as The Master of Ceremonies. The students practiced diligently to give an amazing performance. The theme for this year’s Cheetah Showcase was “expressing your individuality.” The students worked on this showcase by themselves with some helps of the teachers. They enjoyed practicing for the final, huge, extraordinary performance! During the Performance There were many extraordinary performances by the students. The Cheetah Showcase started off with Pedro Da Silveria playing “Scherzo” on the piano. It was nice to hear the gentle notes of the piano. Sasha Thorpe sang Beautiful originally sung by Christina Aguilera. To end the first part Marissa Edmiston, Ahlam Mohamed, Matthew Palmer, Kayla Sabet, Maggie Short, Aaryman Akhouri, Andre Monroy, Matthew Channel and Pedro Da Silveria performed Three Sideways Stories from Wayside School. After this came the 15 minute interval to stretch around and mingle. To start the second part Ethan McCrea played “Malaguena”. Sneha Satapathy sung Reflection, also originally sung by Christina Aguilera. The Cheetah Showcase ended with all the participants singing Firework originally sung by Katy Perry. Each performance was met with a thunderous applause from the audience. After the Performance The showcase was a total success! The students did a remarkable job on the Cheetah Showcase. The songs, dances, and skits were out of this world. Also the art and writing pieces were phenomenal and breathtaking. The Three Wayside School stories were very hilarious to the audience. Reflection, sung by Sneha Satapathy, was also very marvelous. The group number Firework, originally, the students did stupendous job. However, the Cheetah Showcase lasted longer than most people hoped to. -Ahlam Mohamad & Marrisa Edmiston page 52 Cheetah Chatter Sochi Winter Olympics were running on television since February 7, 2014. Therefore, we chose to do a poll predicting the country that was going to win. We know that lots of people were watching the Olympics, so we went around the school and asked students to vote for their favorite country. The top three countries in the medal ranking at that time were Norway, Canada, and The Netherlands. In this poll, we went around the school and asked the Kindergarten class through the 6 th and 8th Grade classes. The results were pretty amazing! Looking at the result Canada was a popular choice. Maybe Canada is our neighboring country so the students were favoring it. However, I voted for Norway, since they were doing awesome. P.S: By the time we were going for print we found out that Russia won the Sochi Olympics. What a disappointment! -Ishan Akhouri and Adam Mohamed Snow You play in the snow I will have a snow ball fight. The snow hit my face. -Arjun Prasad page 62 Cheetah Chatter Book Review Robinson Crusoe is a primo book, created by a very talented author. The author is Daniel Defoe. Daniel was a spy and also a journalist. Daniel Defoe has also written other books such as “The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe” and other books. The book was originally published in 1719 April 25th. We liked how the book was sequenced. This book has been an inspiration for many other “Marooned on an island” movies, like The Cay, and books like Cast Away. Robinson Crusoe always had a knack for adventure and finally narrated his action filled tale in this book. His adventure began on the first of September during the year 1651. He boarded a ship bound for London. As soon as the ship left the dock one of the biggest hurricanes struck the ship. Poor Robinson had never been at sea and got extremely sick and terrified. Then he realized what a mistake had done leaving his main land. This was just the start of his troubles. The next day the sea got calm then got hit with an even more death-defying hurricane. This time the ship sank because of a leak that sprang on the boat. Robinson however escaped on a nearby boat; the powerful waves threw him from his boat. Then his tale began. Throughout the book is an account of his life and how he survived on the island isolated from mankind. We enjoyed the book very much. The reason why we enjoyed it was because we like survival and action stories. Many of the people who read this book did not like it because they thought it was boring and not logical. We enjoyed it very much, but I can see why a lot of people did not like this. This book is enjoyed by people all around the world, majority of the people who enjoyed this book were from England, where the book was originally published. In the end of the book Robinson Crusoe returns from the isolated island and becomes an old and wealthy plantation owner. All of his family died when he returned, expect his sister. We recommend this book to kid’s ages 9+. If we could rate this book we would give it 4 stars. This book is a classic and we would highly recommend you read it. -Tyler Sabet and Mihir Sanad The Winner Mark waited eagerly at the starting line, anxious to start running. When the horn blew, Mark took off. He had never felt this adrenalin. He could hear his friends and family chanting, “Mark, Mark!” He noticed he was in second place. He pushed with all the extra force he had in him. Mark ran his heart out, and then he heard a cry of pain. He stopped and looked behind. A young boy about the age seven to nine was lying on the ground crying. Mark stopped and ran over to him and asked, “Are you okay?” The child continued crying. Mark thought about what he was about to do. He picked up the boy and carried him to the finish line. Mark saw one of his friends looking at him with an expression that said, “You could have won!! Why did you help that kid!?!?” Mark continued walking the boy on his shoulder. When they finally reached the sideline, he saw a set of parents in dismay. “Oh my, thank you so much,” said the boy’s parents. They grabbed their son and ran away to get him some help. Mark stood still for a moment, shocked about what he did. Then out of nowhere the crowd started cheering. The judges walked over to Mark and said, “You did something that was better than winning a trophy.” Mark would never get back the time he trained for this race. But what he did earn that day could never be replaced by any feeling ever again -Tyler Sabet (6th grade) page 7 Cheetah Chatter If you are looking for a survival, building, action and adventure game, try Minecraft. Minecraft is a building game, with action in it. It was publically released on May 17, 2009, as an alpha version. The full version with all the awesome stuff in it came out on, November 17, 2011. There are many versions of this game. There is one for Xbox 360, iOS, PC, and Mac. There are three modes in Minecraft. There are Survival, Creative, and Adventure. In survival you can survive days and nights, when monsters are around. The main goal is to build a house before nighttime. That is a hard task. To build a house you need to get wood, and make resources out of that wood. After you have made a basic house, you can start mining, and getting iron, gold, diamonds, etc, and can make tools out of those. With those tools, you can do many things. The tools are the sword, the axe, the pickaxe, the hoe, and the spade. Adventure mode, is much harder. You cannot hit wood with your fists, or dirt, so that means you must search for the bonus chest, a chest that has a few torches, so you can make some light at nighttime, an axe, so you can get wood, and a shovel, for getting dirt. It is harder to get diamonds, and other resources, so only a true Minecrafter can play this mode. With the sword, you can fend off monsters. You can get wood faster using the axe, besides using your fists for wood. With the pickaxe, you can mine, and get awesome stuff like gold and diamonds. With the hoe, you can make a farm, and tame animals, like horses, so you can ride them. With the spade, you can dig dirt faster, besides using your fists for dirt. The creative mode is a fun relaxing version of mine craft. You have unlimited amount of resources and cheats. You can build to your heart’s desire and you can fly. This allows you to build stuff that you wouldn’t be able to build in survival. There many cheats that you can use in the creative version of mine craft. Like you can set the time of day in mine craft and you could fly. Creative mode truly allows you to do whatever you want and lets you build in it till you drop. Minecraft is also online game that means that you can join servers. There are many many servers that you can join. On servers you can chat with other people and build, do survival, or do whatever the server was made for. You can also make your own server. You can program the server to make it however you want to. You could make it so it’s just creative. Servers are truly fun. However, we would recommend being careful allowing kids on a public server. -Ishaan Akhouri and Gavin Flanagan Pandora One day a ballerina girl named Pandora tried to dance on a pumpkin. When she twirled, the pumpkin rolled away. And she fell off. Pandora knew she needed a bigger pumpkin. Unfortunately, she didn’t know where to find one. So she grew one herself. When it was big enough for her to twirl on , she got on top of it and completed her dance with a lovely twirl. -Adalia Udechime (3rd grade) page 8 Cheetah Chatter My Best Experience Ever If you ever dreamed of swimming with dolphin, read on and hopefully you can feel like you’re doing it with me. When my mom, dad, and I were in Mexico, my mom surprised me with the best surprise ever. She said, “We are going to swim with dolphins”. My mom and I walked down a peer and walked right into the ocean and there were two dolphins waiting for us. Their names were Cathy and Frances and I saw them do amazing tricks. I got to kiss a dolphin which I thought was weird because I kissed it right on the lips (I never thought my first kiss would be with a dolphin!) Then I floated in the water and the dolphins swam around and I grabbed onto their fins and we swam across the ocean together. Another thing I got to do was dance with Frances which I thought was cool because Frances was actually moving back and forth. My favorite part was riding across the water standing up in the air on both of the dolphin’s noses. It felt like I was riding right on top of the ocean. Swimming with Frances and Cathy was my best experience ever. I hope you had a good one with me! -Emily Lupisella (4th Grade) Sled Ride Snow is falling down I like playing in the snow Making snow tunnels -Katherine Creative Writing pieces provided by: Tyler Sabet (6th): The Winner Emily Lupisella (4th): My Best Experience Ever Adalia Udecime (3rd): Pandora Staff Editor Jasveen Kaur Haikus provided by Mrs. Taterway’s class Reporters Kayla Sabet Matthew Palmer Matthew Cerniglia Ahlam Mohamed Marissa Edmiston Gavin Flanagan Mihir Sanad Sneha Satapathy Ishaan Akhori Adam Mohamed Tyler Sabet
