It’s in his blood- literally. The award winning New York native is the successor to his father, Charles Gill, who founded Gill Photographers in 1961. Specializing in portrait, wedding and commercial photography, Christopher has continued to build the company’s 45 year history of excellent quality and customer service. His passion for his craft has enabled him to see the world, including a month in South Africa documenting the church ministry of Archbishop Wilbert S. McKinley. His accolades include awards from the PPA, Professional Photographers of New York State and the Professional Photographers of Greater New York. Professionally, he continues to solidify his place in the photographic industry as the first African American to serve on the Professional Photographers of America’s board of directors, the incoming president of the Professional Photographers Minority Network and a speaker and teacher for both the Georgia Professional Photographers Conference and The Greater New York Conference. © 2006 Christopher Gill Catch Chris Gill @ this year’s Photo Plus Expo! Unlike film - you can "see" the results created as you shoot. This is extremely helpful when working with difficult lighting or trying to make specific placements in a photo montage. The camera will allow you to shoot an image then preview the file before laying it "on-top" of the previous image. In this mode you are "sandwiching" exposures to make a creative composition. A few examples of images shot in NYC’s Times Square really showcase this technique. © 2006 Brandon Remler - FinePix S3 Pro S3 PRO TRICK OF THE MONTH © 2006 Brandon Remler - FinePix S3 Pro - 4 e Note that you will not multiply the final output size - this is managed in-camera and you will still have a 34M output regardless of how many exposures are layered onto a single frame. This is only the beginning of the image enhancing and efficiency improving aspects of the digital era and already we seem to have a huge problem looming overhead: lack of solid educational info to ease us into the next step. Sure there are plenty of digital books, DVD's and seminars but there's plenty of misinformation too that's usually made up by desperate photographers looking for a quick patch-instead of solving the problem with fact, truth and testing. Those days are over. SSU has created a $600,000 facility that's not for selling products, not to impress the neighbors, not for party time, but for you... • For you to learn from the best instructors held to the highest of standards in the industry. • For you to gather in small groups to learn, discuss, shoot, process and print every aspect of the topics at hand. • For you to feel the freedom of using the finest gear there is to create your images. • For you to work in an environment built from the ground up as the finest facility in the world. • For you to develop the professionalism and integrity that comes with confidence in your work. • For you and your staff to learn, thrive and enjoy the elements of our craft. If you are looking for quality, up-to-date, unbiased, hands-on information you can use in your business right now, come spend a week with SSU. TIMES & INFORMATION: WHEN: ON-GOING Throughout the year WHERE: ShootSmarter University 76 S. LaSalle Street 3rd Floor, Aurora, IL 60505 - 630-844-9829 www.shootsmarteruniversity.com THE PLUS COALITION - WHAT IS IT? This past month PACA (Picture Archive Council of America) held their international conference in Key West, FL. During the conference there were plenty of seminars about MicroStock agencies and the future of the stock image industry, but one seminar in particular stood out as having a wider affect on the photo industry. Presented by PLUS Coalition President and CEO Jeff Sedlik and Jeff Burke the Chairman of the Board of the PLUS Coalition the seminar’s topic was centered around a 4 year project to standardize metadata and keywording for images. The PLUS Coalition is an international non-profit association -the largest group of trade associations and stakeholders ever assembled in the history of image licensing. If one is to believe that the future of the imaging industry is going to be the brokering of images to businesses, publishers, educational establishments and the editorial world, then it can be envisioned how awesome the task of cataloguing and storing images can be. Imagine all those images coming in for a publication and a myriad of ways to catalogue the same image? Finding one photographer’s images, doing the billing, giving the proper byline and making sure the image makes it to the right layout...it’s a daunting task for sure. The PLUS Coalition in conjunction with PACA has just finished the first ever system of industry standards for use in assignment and stock image licensing and they are launching it at this year’s Photo Plus Expo in NYC. All of the industries and professions involved in making, distributing and using images are participating in the PLUS Coalition: photographers, illustrators, stock agencies, artist reps, art buyers, designers, publishers, camera manufacturers, software companies, and their trade associations. Together they have built PLUS - a system of universal licensing standards for use by all. Please stop by their booth in NYC #256 or visit their website - www.useplus.org AUTUMN 2006 No. 2 3 WWW.FUJIFILMUSA.COM P A REC FUJIFILM - Expand the World of Imaging The interest of the imaging industry is currently focused on the dual areas of digital cameras and in-store printing, also known as retail printing. At Photokina 2006, Fujifilm responded to this interest by placing “Digital Cameras” and its “Print at Retail”products and services as the main exhibits of its overall display. In the Digital Camera Area, Fujifilm displayed the full lineup of its high-end FinePix series. In the Print at Retail Area, digital camera prints from Frontier minilabs and print order terminals were also exhibited to raise awareness of the diverse range of retail printing services Fujifilm is able to offer. Digital Cameras – Face Detection Technology — the introduction of a new type of IC chip — is able to detect the faces of up to ten different people in only 0.05 seconds. A version of this is available post capture in the FinePix S5. The “Print at Retail” services are based on output of digital camera images with the Digital Minilab Frontier — a remarkable fusion of digital and silver halide technology. Professional Film - Fujifilm displayed the range of professional films with a particular focus on the Fujichrome Provia 400X, Velvia 100 and T64 professional films. In addition, a large number of photographs were exhibited that amply portrayed the high level of granularity, the rich gradation and power of expression that comes with silver halide films, and further promoted Fujifilm as the company that strives to preserve the culture of photography. A Range of New Products - Examples of Fujifilm’s skillful application of existing photographic technologies can be seen in the exciting hologram and inorganic electroluminescence exhibit area. Finally, in the DVD corner Fujifilm demonstrated LabelflashTM DVD discs which provide an absolutely new form of image expression without the need for a printer or any consumables such as ink. • 12.3 MP Super CCD SR Pro with 400% Greater Dynamic Range • NEW Film Simulation Modes • NEW RPT Pro Processor with Advanced Noise Reduction • NEW Face Detection Technology • NEW Durable Magnesium Alloy Body Construction COMING EARLY 2007 TO A DEALER NEAR YOU LOOK FOR THE AUTHORIZED DEALER LOGO... In response, Fujifilm, in collaboration with The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), have launched a national public education campaign called Images of Health: Mammograms for a Million Moms. The goal of the program is to help save lives by encouraging over one million more women in America to pledge to get a mammogram by logging onto www.imagesofhealth.com. Images of Health: Mammograms for a Million Moms, was created by Fujifilm, producers of the world's most widely used digital mammography system, to raise awareness of the life-saving importance of mammography to detect breast cancer. It supports the NBCF mission to save lives through breast cancer education and programs that provide for the screening of underserved women. The campaign is designed not only to educate, but also to motivate, and drive over one million women to pledge to get a mammogram -statistics show that for every 1,000,000 screening mammograms, 1,000 lives could be saved by the early detection of cancer. In addition to the initiative, to help further advance the NBCF mission of increasing awareness and providing mammograms for those in need, Fujifilm is contributing $250,000 to the NBCF and donating two of its recently FDA-approved digital mammography systems, Fuji Computed Radiography for Mammography (FCRm). In addition, Fujifilm is donating to NBCF a portion of the sales of two new products - a pink FinePix Z3 digital camera, and a pink QuickSnap 800 Flash One-Time-Use Camera. Packaging for both cameras will display information on the program to point women to www.imagesofhealth.com for the valuable mammography information as well as the sweepstakes. Once women or their family members make a pledge online they can also enter a sweepstakes to win a trip to Canyon Ranch in Tucson, Ariz. or La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
