President’s Report
To all of the wonderful members and patrons of our
great club, what a year it has been!
The first weekend of December was the annual House
to House and we would like to thank Wahu for the
donation of a new Yamaha Rhino ATV which is very
noticeable in the distinctive Wahu branding.
Let’s start with patrol members. More rescues, more
preventative actions, more patrol hours than ever with
no lives lost between the flags. It’s an amazing result
seeing no one is being paid to do what I consider
to be a full-time job. Congratulations to every Patrol
Member, Patrol Captain, Vice Captain, Trainer and
First Aid Officer and all of the many new Bronzies and
other award holders who have helped in some way to
make the Club a nice place to be involved.
One major event stands out among many this season,
the Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl with gorgeous
Breanna Thompson being awarded Runner-up. She
was something else! She worked tirelessly throughout
the season raising funds at several events. She also
spent her ‘spare’ time training new Bronzies each
weekend which enabled Scotty Andrews to focus on
other important duties.
We have had some brilliant results from members
wishing to help our cause like our Sportsman’s Lunch.
Many thanks to Greg and Andrew Bell (more on this
later).
There are many more people to thank. Nerang RSL,
Andrew McInnes, Terry McDonald and Ange for their
support. Without them behind us I doubt we would
be here today. The bar staff who work so hard, My
Oliver’s Kitchen, Steve and Vicky and all the other
staff, it’s a pleasure to call in for a coffee. Keep up the
good work.
Other assistance came to us from another kind group,
Rotary Surfers Paradise, who donated $20,000,
which enabled us to purchase a much needed twin
cab diesel 4x4 Toyota vehicle. Thanks a million to Stu
Fairley (President) and his hard-working team.
Another entity is the Supporters Committee which
looks after maintaining the daily running of our
licensed Club. Many thanks to Sue Sellings for all the
hard work and long hours she spends making things
happen and the Committee who are in the process
of doing a feasibility study for renovations to our first
floor area. We should have some answers within a
month or two.
The Coolangatta Gold was another successful
weekend on Surfers Paradise beach. Thanks to all
who helped set up for this high profile event working
with SLSA and SLSQ. It places the Club in good stead
regarding our profile. Hopefully this event will be
bigger and better each year.
Indy fundraising was a great success with an amount
of $19,000 raised. A great team effort from those
involved. Very much appreciated.
The Nippers are going from strength to strength with
a new Committee (some old some new) and a very
positive outlook with great results at this year’s State
Champs. Keep it up! We’re behind you all the way.
The Management Committee has been a pleasure to
be a part of with no animosity and decisions being
made with a minimum of fuss.
To Warren Peters, Shane O’Connor, Mick Featherstone
and David Orchard, it’s been a pleasure being part of
such a proactive Committee with you.
I must mention and thank my Vice President, Shane
(Slaker) Laker and Admin Manager, Mandy Hurst, for
their help and assistance over the past year. Shane for
his diligent chasing up of money (i.e XXXX and Optus)
plus many other areas, and Mandy for her unselfish
attitude, especially on weekends when she should be

with feet up relaxing, she would be at the Club doing
something to help us. Thanks team.
To finish up I again thank all the members, Committee
members, supporters and sponsors. Without your
dedication our Club would not be what it is today.
Special mention to Scott Andrews and his team for all
their effort with training. Thanks Scotty.
Last but not least I would like to thank my lovely family
Pam, Laura, and Jordan for being supportive and
understanding for the feelings I hold for my position
as President of our great Club. Yours sincerely,
To our Club Captain, Khan Hamill, and Vice Captain,
Zayne Hamill – great job. You make it seem easy as
people love working with you.
There are many who have helped throughout the
year like Peter (The Gentle Giant) Anderson and Finley
Taylor who put in unbelievable hours on the beach.
To all, my sincere appreciation.
Stuart Vial’l
PRESIDENT
2007 Sportsman’s
Lunch
In February 2007 the Club hosted its single
largest fundraiser, our annual Sportsman’s
Lunch at Melba’s on the Park.
Ray White Surfers Paradise helped the Club
to organise this fantastic day which saw us
raise almost $90,000 through the auction of
sporting and celebrity memorabilia, a silent
auction and raffles. Thank you to Andrew
Bell, Janine & Greg Bell and Jacinta McGhee
for your dedication to making this day such
a success.
The MC for the Lunch was Club favourite
comedian Johnny Garfield who warmed up
the crowd up and kept the day filled with
laughter. Guest Speaker was Sam Kekovich
who entertained the crowd of approx 250
for almost an hour.
While it might be easy to sit back and pat
ourselves on the back for such a great day,
we’ve already started organising the 2008
Lunch. There are always only limited seats so
if you are interested, get in early.
Andrew Bell, Stuart Vial’l & Greg Bell
Secretary’s Report
Well here we are at the end of another busy year
which has seen a changing of the guard and along
with it a consolidation of our financial position. It
is always easier to manage any operation when its
financial position is sound and that is the case with
our Club.
interesting to note that of the past eight Senior Club
Presidents seven have been ex Nipper parents with
five still active in Club affairs. (Something to look
forward to Mick.)
The Junior Committee have short listed a very
experienced coach and competitor and former Surfers
Paradise Nipper for the season and he will liaise with
the other coaches under the guidance of Surf Sports
Director, David Orchard.
This is mostly due to the long term strategies and
planning that allowed contracts to be put in place
by the previous committees over several years and
continually monitored and fine tuned by the current
regime.
I’m excited about the future for the competitive team
(nippers and seniors) and it’s imperative we remain
focused on being the best we can be.
Sportsman’s Lunch – A Record!
Our Annual Sportsman’s Lunch has become ‘The
Lunch’ for the business community to attend in
Surfers Paradise and our heartfelt thanks must go
to Greg and Andrew Bell and their staff for the
professionalism and support for this event.
Senior Coach
Zayne Hamill has been appointed Senior (Iron &
Fitness) Coach and he already has a squad of 20 or so
training regularly. He is also offering beginner classes
for ski paddling and the Club has purchased several
craft for this purpose.
This year’s lunch, as in the past, doesn’t just happen
but is the culmination of careful planning and many
hours of organisation that starts as soon as the
function is over.
Beach Patrols
This season, as in the past, has found our patrols in
the thick of the action from hit and run road accidents
to lost children, and of course several thousand other
incidents as well. This was highlighted by the Channel
7 team tasked with getting footage for a new national
TV show. They by-passed the other scheduled clubs
because of all the action on our beach.
I would like to thank our major sponsors for the day
and particularly Mark Willoughby from Wine Source
for once again providing the wines and Castelmaine
XXXX for their contribution. Both these companies
have been with us from the start and we really
appreciate their support. It would be remiss not to
mention Melba’s owners David and Paul Allen and
their staff who once again produced and managed a
five star event for us.
Our Club Captain, Khan Hamill, should be
congratulated for his efforts this season. I firmly
believe he has the makings of one of our greatest
ever Captains. I urge everyone to give Khan as much
support as possible to help with this very demanding
position.
Rebuilding The Club
It was disappointing at the start of the season with
people transferring to other clubs, particularly some
Nippers and the irony is the reasons given as to why
they left didn’t happen; a case of “the grass appears
to be greener on the other side”.
Chief Training Officer
As with the Khan we are very lucky to have someone
of the caliber of Scott Andrews, or Scotty as we have
known him over the years. His professionalism and
dedication to the training and examination of our
members in this most important position will enhance
their involvement and make them more aware of their
responsibilities.
Nippers
What a great Committee this year. Chairman Mick
Featherstone and most of his team have had a steep
learning curve and are to be congratulated on the
way they have managed, what I believe, is the most
important section of the Club.
It is imperative that our members are properly
accredited to help protect them from any litigation
that may arise from rescue situations. It is more
important than ever with all the regulations, (State/
Local) that we are now forced to conform to in our
every day Surf Lifesaving activities.
The future competitive strength will come from these
children and their families and others that will come
to and stay at a friendly and stable Club that is able
to provide the facilities they will be expecting. It is
Secretary’s Report (CONT.)
Administration
The secret to the success of any organisation is efficient
and accurate long term Administration and Mandy
Hurst delivers this day in day out. She has endured
many meetings and has been the person responsible
for the ‘nuts and bolts’ running of the Club and has
assisted and made my position very easy for the past
couple of seasons, Thanks Mandy!
Another that comes to mind is the Supporters Club
Caterer Steve Oliver and his wife Vicki. He always
supports us in our endeavors and continually donates
prizes (cash or kind) and his contributions amount to
thousands of dollars.
It would be remiss of me not mention Nerang RSL
President Terry McDonald and Secretary Manager
Andrew McInnes, for their assistance, albeit with
the Supporters Club. They purchase, on behalf of
their Club, tables at our Lunch every year and their
management expertise with the Supporters Club
cannot be underestimated for its impact on the Surf
Club finances; thanks.
The Team
Our Committee has functioned in a harmonious and
efficient manner this year and I must say it has been
a pleasure to serve with people that are prepared
to ‘get stuck in’ and get things happening. The key
to success is long term administration and you only
need to look at our Honour Boards to see the parallel
between sporting success and patrol strength and
officials in key positions for several years. It gives the
Club stability and continuity and allows subsequent
committees a sounding board when attempting to
make decisions that affect the future.
Our Surf Girl Breanna
What a great story of determination and commitment
and it was fitting that she was recognised for her
efforts and all of us in the Club are so proud of her.
Well done!
In Closing
This will be my last report as Secretary as I am not
seeking re-election but you will still see me around the
club as I have three grandchildren in the Nippers and
love coming down each Sunday and look forward to
having a coffee at the ‘Table of Knowledge’. All the
best for future seasons. Go the ‘Gold Stars’.
Supporters & Contributors
I have mentioned the Bell boys but they deserve
another mention. Our first venture with them was
a Golf Day at Palm Meadows that raised $25,000
and was a lot of hard work. After another Golf Day
that was not as successful it was decided to have
our Sportsman’s Lunches and the rest, as they say ‘Is
history’.

Treasurer’s Report
We’ve had a very good year in the Surf Club from
a financial management perspective. To headline our
financial position, the following points illustrate the
achievements of the Committee and members during
the 2006-07 financial year:
•
assistance of her fiancé Scott Andrews and the
support team behind them were great too.
Overall, we are in very good shape and next year’s
Committee will gain a healthy bank balance to start
getting other initiatives moving to assist in attracting
more members to the Club.
the almost permanent overdraft of the past few
years is no longer required (for the foreseeable
future);
•
we have a reasonable surplus of cash in the
bank to meet our current and future months
financial obligations;
•
we’ve only had two months during the financial
year where expenditure exceeded income;
•
we’ve had the roof replaced at no cost to the
Club;
•
the Ray White organised Sportsman Lunch in
February raised $90,000 towards our future
needs.
I’d like to mention a few people in particular who
were the regular participants in any fundraising
event, particularly Shane Laker, Stu Viall, Mandy
Hurst, Cindy Board, Sharyn & Steve Swaisland and all
of their children who often assisted.
Finally I thank Mandy and Louisa Holmes (our
bookkeeper), for making my job significantly easier
because of the amount of work they did behind the
scenes. Regards,
Warren Peters
TREASURER
These achievements have been a couple of years
in the making with some tremendous work by last
year’s Committee to gain financial commitment from
Telstra and Optus to replace the roof and to commit
to ongoing funding for the tower on the roof. Shane
Laker did a great job this year in hounding these
organisations to get the money off them from the
marketing commitments they made as part of this
agreement. This agreement provides a steady income
stream into the next few years.
Whilst the achievement in collections from the annual
doorknock was disappointing, it followed on from
the successful Indy Collection and I think the regular
collectors may have been a little jaded to keep on
backing up. A greater commitment from those who
don’t assist in these events is required to make the
most of these fund raising days.
Congratulations to Breanna Thompson on her
achievements in the Summer Surf Girl quest; again
much needed funds were raised for the Club. The

Club Captain’s Report
Let me start by saying congratulations to all members
for their service to our club this season.
new members this year. He puts in huge hours and is an
extremely valuable part of our Life Saving Club and our
Committee. Thanks Scotty!
This year was outstanding in terms of commitment and
attitude.
The Committee members offered great support
throughout the year and along with my brother and
vice-captain Zayne, made my role more enjoyable and
fulfilling.
We had another long and busy season at Surfers Paradise
beach. The patrolling season commenced two weeks
earlier than previously and finished one week later.
During this time we performed many rescues, assists,
preventions, searches and dealt with countless marine
stings, first aids and even the occasional shark sighting.
The Support Services also helped in many ways this
season.
To all our sponsors – thank you so much! We appreciate
everything, without you guys we could not achieve such
a high standard of service.
On a sad note, we lost one of our own this year in a
tragic car accident. Keiji Okamoto, 35, was our most
senior Japanese Lifesaver. He was 2005/2006 Senior Life
Saver of the Year. He completed 131 hours on the beach
in 2005/2006. He was Vice Patrol Captain of patrol 6
and more importantly was a genuine friend to all. He
was a dedicated and professional lifesaver and a role
model, especially for the younger Japanese lifesavers in
our club. We farewell you Keiji, thanks for all the good
memories and service.
New Year’s Day 2007
Mitch, Kei &Khan (Ken in the background)
The film crew that was on the beach throughout
summer provided an interesting challenge. The resulting
series should offer the public with a good insight into
our services and should serve to advance the meteoric
rise to fame of Peter Anderson.
I would like to extend a big thank you to our dedicated
early morning patrol teams headed by big Peter
Anderson and the one and only Finlay Taylor. They were
capably assisted by Olivia Wilson (Broadbeach), Bob
Muller (Burleigh), Col and Sue Neil and the rest of their
crew.
Bobby, Leon, Zayne & Khan
With Jade at the Jade Building opening
These guys had our beach opened and manned from
5am every patrol day regardless of conditions.
They controlled the drunks, the drug affected, the nude,
the nude double back turtles and all the other creatures
that stray from Cavill Avenue at that time of morning,
trying to swim their way home. Well done!
To all patrol captains and vice captains, thanks again
for helping ensure that patrols had adequate members
signed on and were performed professionally and
effectively. It was a big improvement on the previous
season.
Overall, we are still a very small club but from my eyes
we are moving in the right direction. With continued
development of our membership, dedication to patrols
and the current atmosphere of fun
and friendship, we shall continue to
create a big happy Surf Life Saving
Family. The residents and visitors of
Surfers Paradise are in good hands!

Team Manager’s Report
The season 2006/07 was a fairly quiet one for the
club competitive wise with a small but dedicated
group of competitors attending all carnivals except
for the Aussies in Perth. Even though we had limited
numbers there were a couple of standout results at
various carnivals including the State Titles by Davina
Drinan and Patrick Kelly (board riding) and Tayla
Neilsen and Larnee Stuart (iron, swim, board rescue).
Equal praise must also go to the members that go to
every carnival and give it their all but yet to achieve
that elusive medal; keep at it your turn will come. The
State Titles at Kawana also saw our first non surfing
open competitors for the year which was great to see
and comments like “Surfers are back” could be heard
around the beach. The boys accounted for themselves
very well including fielding an Open Taplin team.

Our sister club in Japan, Kaike LSC, has invited us to
visit them and we have a very talented cross selection
of competitors including nippers and masters,
trainers, coaches, administration, our Surf Girl and
Club Captain all going in late August. It is shaping up
to be a fantastic learning opportunity for both clubs.
It has been my pleasure to be Team Manager this
year working with everyone as we go through our
rebuilding phase. This will be the only year Surfers
Paradise has not sent a team to the Aussies so we
will be there next year April 1st – 6th in Perth. We
also have competitors gearing up for Rescue 2008 in
Germany July 18th – 2nd August (start fundraising!)
As we have done the previous two seasons we took
a team to Sydney to compete at the Australia Day
Freshwater Carnival, The Manly Carnival and the
Manly Board Riding Carnival. This is a great team
building trip and everyone had a great time. Apart
from the carnivals we managed to fit in surfing,
training, bowling, going to the movies and Fish
Markets and dining out and of course the obligatory
drive through Kings Cross. I would like to thank the
Swaisland family on behalf of the team for driving the
gear trailer down and back.
At this point I would like to put out a plea for anyone
that would like to complete an Officials course. The
Club is desperately short of Officials and without
them we cannot compete at carnivals.
I would like to thank all the people that have helped
me through the year carrying, setting up and pulling
down tents, with the marshalling etc. and a special
thanks to Mandy Hurst who has saved me countless
hours with her Surfmate expertise.
Club Champs were held over two weeks due to the
surf conditions with board riding one week and all the
other events held the next. There was a good roll up
including some new faces and members that do not
usually compete and I must say they were all having a
‘go’ to claim the prestigious title of Age Champion.

Board Riding
Surfing has one of the longest histories of any sport,
starting as an act of bravery in Hawaii and only the
kings were allowed to do it. Any surfer who tries for
the first time has the feelings of fear, excitement and
the unknown. The ocean is big, powerful and needs
to be treated with utmost respect as it has taken many
a life. At Club Champs the waves were so big the
other events had to be put on hold until the following
weekend. The board riding was the only event to go
ahead.
when we caught them. I ended up winning the event,
Bobby second and Anthony beating Pat Kelly was as
good as winning as he is an Ironman at heart and we
are surfers so congratulations Anthony.
The Boardriders Club had a competition every two
months and will recommence the first Saturday in
August. Winners this season were:

I set the plan for the young ones as it was dangerous
and they needed to be aware as this was the day
for them to step up and become men of the ocean.
They went out and caught some waves closer to
shore knowing their limits and keeping it safe. Out of
nowhere came Alister Cran who was the only kid to
make it out the back. This was the day in the old days
he would have been proven a king and on this day he
was. A monster set came in. He was in position to catch
it. As he launched himself into this powerful beast of
a wave he made it to the bottom with nowhere to
go. The wave was closing out so he pulled in to the
tube and was mauled by the wave. That didn’t phase
him. He came up and paddled straight to the outside
lineup. This won him the event and proved to us he
will be a great waterman. Congratulations Alister
The Surf School had a great year with the nippers and
members learning to surf before summer. Its great
after weeks of training, we get to take them out
the back for the first time. Their eyes are wide open
like eggs and they are so excited, the arms go up in
triumph after they take off out the back and ride their
first wave. The next start for free surfing lessons for
the Club is Oct –Dec for all members and Mandy will
include this in the Newsletter as we get closer to the
date.
When I first came to the Club to start the Surf School,
the Club was happy to have another activity to do
with surfing that members could participate in. Well
it’s taken off! Nearly 50% of surf clubs now have surf
schools. Remember we were the first and I believe we
have the best Surf School in the world at our Club. I
could be biased LOL. Have a good surf.
The women were next and again they were faced
with huge seas and very difficult conditions to get
out. The waves were relentless as Angela O’Sullivan
tried to break through to the outside sets. The ocean
was to win on this day as she was swept down the
beach by an incredible torrent. Meanwhile Jane Laker
was racking up
waves on the inside shore break to easily win the
event. Congratulations Jane and Angela

Next the Opens and we paddled out from 400m
down the beach to try to get through a crack in the
bank. I could see large sets coming and was hoping
we’d covered enough ground to be out.
Bobby Garrett’s surfing has come a long way and he
surfed great in the final. Anthony Santoro had a great
strategy - catch one outside and one to the beach the
same one I was using. He caught one of the waves
of the day and beached it. The waves were fantastic

Coaching
Season 2006/07 turned out to be a positive one for
the competitive ranks of Surfers Surf Club.
The State Titles were a great way to finish off with
good attendance and some promising results. We
had competitors in several age groups including the
surfing team and even an open taplin team! We now
have a firm platform to build on and with enthusiastic
and consistent training 2007/2008 is looking good!
The nippers came along, picking up some new skills
and confidence and even a few State medals. Zach
Featherstone and Tayla Neilsen should be particularly
proud of their victories at the State Titles! I will look
forward to many of the junior members continuing
to develop within the club over the coming years as
there is a great deal of talent among them.
Zayne Hamill
COACH
The senior club also progressed especially in the way
of attitude and enthusiasm. Participation at training
was great and everyone enjoyed themselves. Special
mention should go to Andrew and Jane Laker, Alister
and Oliver Cran, Kandace Swaisland, Anthony Santoro, Zac Orchard and Larnee Stuart who were the
most consistent trainers throughout the season.

Chief Training Officer’s Report
G’Day groovers, movers and shakers. Welcome to the
end of yet another hectic Surf Life Saving season, faced
with long hours on the beach and massive changes in our
training and education programmes.
I thank each and every one of you for your patience and
cooperation throughout this season’s proficiency process.
I know this came as a severe shock to the system, and
it was lengthier than many, many previous years but
we’ve all come out the end successfully armed with our
Certificate II in Public Safety – Aquatic Rescue and some of
us with nationally recognised power craft and resuscitation
competencies.
on last year), plus 139 junior competencies and 266
proficiencies! Wow. What a sensational achievement by
our Club!
As always, this would not be possible without the
tremendous and tireless effort of our totally voluntary
and 100% committed Training Crew. Thanks to the ‘usual
suspects’ Breanna Thompson, Noel Bartley, Peter McMahon
and Roxanne Toll with a Surfers warm welcome to Kellie
Thomson and Louise Gardiner.
Welcome back to Ron Hendy, joining us again in the
assessing ranks after a well earned, yet brief retirement! He
assessed at every one of our proficiency days and almost
all of our Junior award assessment days. Thanks as always,
for your wisdom and advice Ron. You’re a true legend in
this field!
This is one of the greatest advancements our organisation
has made in its long and proud history and has positioned
us well to remain the peak body in Surf and Aquatic
Rescue in the country and also worldwide for many years
to come.
Without the support, understanding, late nights, early
mornings and assistance from our Summer Surf Girl and
my now fiancee Breanna Thompson, I would not be able to
dedicate myself as I have done and continue to do. Thank
you so much. We make a great team!
The good news – those of you who did it this year won’t
need to complete a workbook or theory paper next time
round; only the practical.
The bad news – those who didn’t do their workbooks for
any of the Bronze Medallion, Advanced Resuscitation or
IRB proficiencies, and there were quite a few; we’ll see you
soon!
Macca and Jimmy – I know you said she was out of bounds,
but I just couldn’t help it!
Between the Training Crew, we trained and assessed most
of the above awards, completed not one but two school
holiday Surf Camps and are soon to start offering award
training in Brisbane for our Grammar lads (and anyone
who lives in and around Brisbane).
We again have a fantastic rap sheet this season; 41 new
Bronzies, 182 senior awards (up on last season), 48 junior
awards (3 down on last); a total of 232 new awards (up

Chief Training Officer’s Report (CONT)
There are some major changes afoot in the near future
(again) including a much needed overhaul of the Silver
Medallion Patrol Captain which will work towards a
Certificate III in Public Safety – Beach Management. This
will take in the order of 12 months to demonstrate all the
required competencies. Others we’ll soon see are specialised
4WD courses, spinal management and the phasing out
of the BSZ qualifications with the new TAA; something
that was badly needed to regain credibility within the VET
environment for training and education. With some of
the BSZ qualifications handed out across the country (not
isolated to Surf), you’d be excused for thinking some were
cut out from the back of a Weet-Bix packet!
Congratulations!!
Despite all the changes and hurdles, a special mention
should go out to Cameron Bain, Cindy Board, Kannitha
Ly, Leighton Cripps and Marc Hogan; all completing five
awards this season and John Abraham, Megan Crockford
and Rob Bressan completing four. What was really great to
see was the large number of previous Associate members,
new members and parents who completed three new
awards.
On behalf of the Training Crew it’s great to see so many
gaining these awards to support their kids and the Club.
Don’t stop here!
The Surf Camps were a resounding success, vastly
improving on the atmosphere, environment and fun of last
year. I’m sure all will agree we had a great time with less
interruptions and many more laughs and groans of horror
at the wide selection of educational, yet entertaining videos
and images!
It is only fitting to also acknowledge our ‘Honorary’ Training
Crew members, IRB Trainers Shane Lawler and Richard Leal.
Thank for your help guys. Great to see Surfers, Northcliffe
and Broadbeach working so well together to advance our
lifesaving services.
Keep the momentum, building up your skill set and
knowledge as we build upon our solid foundation of
members.
Congratulations to all who gained their BSZ404A Train
Small Groups - Elizabeth Savill, Kannitha Ly, Kellie Thomson,
Leighton Cripps, Louise Gardiner, Megan Crockford,
Michael Cullen, Mitchell Cripps, Rebecca Chambers, Renee
Street, Ronald Hendy, Walter Sheahan and Zuleika Harper.

Scott Andrews
CHIEF TRAINING OFFICER
Remember, as part of an RTO we all must demonstrate
relevant vocational experience and personal development
as part of the qualification. There’s no better way to do
this coming on down and joining in all the fun, humour
and action of a new course or training session and working
towards a Surf Life Saving Training Officer Certificate
qualification.
We’ve snapped many fantastic memories throughout the
season thanks to the generous efforts of Derek Kilgour a
budding local photographer, now proprietor of Gold Coast
Photography. Many would have seen Derek snapping
around the place behind his lens, up early and staying late.
Thanks Mate! They look great!

Summer Surf Girl
What a fantastic season! The Conrad Jupiters Summer

Runner Up and second highest fundraiser.

it, I’m such a lady), interview with panel of judges,
Over the past nine months in my role as Summer Surf
Girl, there has been a number of fundraising events
such as the Lexmark Indy 300, Ralph Magazine Party,
Indy Undi Ball, Sushi Party, Club Christmas party,
Chupa Chup Search for Summer Model Search,
Ray White Sportsmans Lunch and also the Club’s
own number plate surrounds which were a real hit
amongst the club members. Apart from these events
there were also appearances at surf sports events, Surf
Safe Appeal at Channel 9, SLSQ functions, collections
in the Supporters Club, markets, the mall and raffles
in my home town of Cessnock.
swimwear judging, evening wear judging, deportment
and rehearsals for the routines on the final judging
night. Fun, rewarding yet hectic. All the girls were
great and so much fun the hang out with.
I gained a lot from the experience and would
recommend to any female club member to enter.
Not just for the Club but for yourself. You will learn
a lot, such as how to talk to people, raise money,
confidence in yourself and also meet a lot of great
friends along the way. A big thank you to everyone
for your help and support in making me YOUR 2006 /
2007 Conrad Jupiters Summer Surf Girl RUNNER-UP.
I also did some surf education days for the junior
members of our club like the Annual Junior Surf Camp,
Junior Skills Development Day as well as training new
members in gaining their Bronze Medallion. Thankfully
I still had some hair left for the Gala Ball after some
“interesting” sessions with Grant and Brandon (aka
Tit ‘n’ Boob). Love you guys! We won’t even mention
Mitch and Leighton!

Building Committee’s Report
We are moving into some very exciting times
as we advance the club into a new era as other
Supporters clubs have done along the Coast. I am
referring to the long awaited redevelopment of
the first floor into a dining and bar area including
an area for our members.
so has been a win win situation for the Club and
the gym.
Recently we had a working bee at the club
which saw members armed with paint brushes
and rollers painting the main room back to a
neutral colour rather than the colour of another
club, much easier on the eye. The same day saw
two ute loads of ‘stuff’ to the tip and a general
tidy up of the whole club. Thank you to all those
that turned up and put in a days work; much
appreciated.
We have had several meetings this year with
active healthy debate from the members of three
committees (Building, Supporters, Management)
and architects on just how the redevelopment
will take shape. Input from members is also most
welcome. At this stage feasibility studies are being
done to determine just what we can expect from
the project; exciting times indeed.
The Committee would also like to thank the silent
achievers that repair and replace parts of the Club
as needed such as Dennis ‘Mungo’ McAullay,
Shane Carsen, Bob Worsley, Karl Ireland, Stu
Vial’l and apologies if I have missed anyone else
that should be mentioned here.
The final part of the roof replacement (the back
part over the gym) is due to begin in July, and not
before time, ask anyone who has used the gym
during a downpour. This should be completed
before the season starts in September.

Masters Report
Orch & Dwayne at the Aussie Masters
In 2006, the team had been weakened by
injury and competition right transfers to other
clubs. This year saw a return of key competitors
and some excellent results were achieved by
individuals and team competitors in both the
State and Australian Titles.
At the risk of singling competitors out, it was
great to see Dwayne Thuys, David Orchard and
Bill Haylock returning to competition for the
club this year. The team is building towards a
successful 2007-2008 season culminating in the
World Titles in Germany.
The masters group is a close knit one and a great
sense of camaraderie was evident throughout the
year, especially in the teams events at the State
and Australian Titles.
The Masters Patrol continues its attendance
record and I take this opportunity to thank all
Masters for their contribution this season.

equal second place behind Broadbeach. This is a vast
improvement on last year’s result (hopefully we can

Our spending has increased from last season. A fair
bit of this is due to price increases and the amount
of sunscreen we are going through. (It is good to see
everyone is getting the slip, slop, slap message and
looking after themselves)
The costs incurred by the first aid room for the season

were not recorded.)

I would like to thank those first aid personnel who
have treated all the patients we have had, whether
it was for a minor sting or a major first aid case, it is
good to see so many patrol members on our beach
are able to render first aid assistance to a complete
stranger in their time of need.

Junior Chairman’s Report
It gives me great pleasure to present to you the
Annual Report which acts as a summary of activities
both operationally and administratively for the Surfers
Paradise Juniors 2006/07 season.
who donated $3000 to the Committee through
telemarketing the Club activities to the public. Thanks
again Dudley.
We were able to raise further funds with raffles
(including one at Campbell’s) amounting to $2022.
Once again Cindy Board is to be thanked for being
the driving force behind these efforts.
Introduction
As you know my experience, or should I say lack of
experience as a lifesaver, was known to all of you
when I accepted my nomination for this position of
Chairman for 2006/07. Nevertheless, by the end of
the season I had worked out what a Cameron Relay
was and was determined to make the best go of
being part of a strong movement to advance the club
forward.
Finally Surfers Paradise Management donated $2500
towards our State Team competitors who competed
at Kawana Waters in March.
It was decided to keep the membership at $50
per family, which I’m sure most of you will agree is
extremely low compared to other organisations and
sports clubs that we and our children become involved
in. We did this, however, as part of our marketing
initiative and through this raised $1605 after all
insurances and registrations were paid. Of surprise to
me was the significant cost in running a Junior club
and this included:
People who become involved in this Committee usually
do so for the same reason I did, that is their desire to
put back something into the sport which provides so
much for their children. In my case I have been part
of a wonderful experience over the previous three
years watching my son and other children develop as
young confident surf lifesavers.

The Junior Committee started with an opening bank
balance of $8811.29. Our immediate initiative was
to consider the necessary budget requirements by
forecasting our expenditure for the forthcoming
season. We estimated our expenditure would be
around $20,000. Most of the Junior Committee
were elected as first timers and were quite nervous
about undertaking large scale fundraising to support
this amount of money as had been the case during
previous seasons. But, through the wonderful efforts
of our Treasurer Cindy Board, our Gear Steward Craig
Thornton, and their children, Ben and Jayne who were
also ably assisted by Deputy Chairperson Rebecca
Chambers and her two children Gemma and Lachlan,
some $20,000 was raised through “Shake the Can”
around the Surfers Paradise business precinct. Other
members of the Nippers, including parents, took
part in this sort of fundraising and my whole hearted
thanks goes to all those involved, you through your
efforts have virtually funded most of our activities for
the season, it was a fantastic result and one which I
personally found very difficult to undertake.
$5,728.20
$1,795.00
$9,165.00
$1,473.01
$4,304.54
Finally we were left with $10,665.46.
It was with great pleasure that the Juniors were
able to help Breanna Thompson – our Summer Surf
Girl – with her fundraising. The Juniors managed
to boost Breanna’s funds by $5587. I’d just like to
congratulate Breanna on behalf of the Juniors on her
wonderful achievement of Runner-up and second
overall fundraiser.
We were also ably supported by the ever generous

nature. Scott and his team add tremendous value to
our junior program which included the training of
a number of parents in their Bronze Medallion and
other associated awards. Thanks Scott, Breanna and
your team.
Despite the good efforts of previous Committees we
commenced the season with 26 registered juniors.
As a result we undertook a reasonably extensive
marketing campaign, advertising in the newspapers,
writing and approaching a number of schools and
swimming schools and eventually we recruited a
total of 141 members for the season. As usual, as the
season went on these numbers became somewhat
depleted. We saw a lot of new members which we
hope to keep and this is encouraging for the Club
and the sport. The marketing experience not only
gained some new members but gave some invaluable
experience to us as a Committee. The experience was
as follows, that people who live on the Gold Coast
generally do so because they want to take advantage
of our fantastic beaches, and that it only takes a small
amount of effort to encourage new members who
are generally beach focused anyway.
Thanks also go to a number of “stars” that provided
education and training to our Juniors during the
season. These “stars” included the great former
World Ironman Champion Dwayne Thuys, and former
Australian and World Beach Sprint Champion Warren
(Wazza) Peters. These special training days had a
great effect on the children and they gained many
wonderful skills that they put to use when competing
on points days and carnivals. As a Committee who
would listen to feedback we will be definitely steering
our future program towards more of these types of
days and less points days in the future. Our initiative
in this area will be to strongly develop the skill base of
our competitors and members. Thanks guys.
We saw that the swim schools were great areas to
market to as they produce fine swimmers which are
an essential skill for surf competitors. My research
revealed that during the previous halcyon days of
the Surf Club the Club was supported by many good
swim schools who followed their children swimmers
into the club. It is my belief that we need to foster
these relationships for the future. We have identified
a number of swim schools in the suburbs where the
Gold Coast beach mentality also exists and these will
be targeted by our future marketing.
Thrown into a role of running a program on Sunday
mornings was quite a daunting task but I was able
to overcome it through the valuable assistance of a
number of Committee members and supporting club
members. I soon learnt that one of the fundamentals
to conducting a well organised Sunday program is
to have plenty of support, including plenty of Water
Safety. This is an area where the club lacks people and
it is necessary to urgently train more parents in this
area. This year we had great support from the long
standing Committee members, Ann Stuart and Dione
Neilsen, affectionately known as the “Baywatch
Girls”, Shane Laker, Mick Zygadlo, Mike Cullen and
Rebecca Chambers (that is before she got too big
for her swimmers!!!!!) Your efforts were greatly
appreciated.
Junior Activities
Sundays saw a large turn up of juniors taking part
in our beach activity program. This mainly consisted
of running events of a similar nature to carnival
conditions.
The Juniors were also provided with surf education by
the Chief Training Officer Scott Andrews and his now
fiancée Breanna Thompson and their team. During
these sessions Scott and his team taught our children
many life skills about the surf which are necessary in
making them proficient and providing you with the
luxury of knowing they are safe when enjoying the
beach. It is difficult for me to convey to you in this
report the level of appreciation that myself and the
Junior Committee have for this great team. Upon
visiting the Club it was very rare not to see Scott
or Breanna undertaking volunteer training of some

Junior Chairman’s Report (CONT)
The Committee supported those who undertook
swimming programs and paid a swimming subsidy for
those who attended five sessions per week and one
board training. As in the past it was clearly evident
that those who had committed to a great deal of
training in the pool were rewarded with good results
at carnivals.
In the short time that I have been involved in the Life
Saving movement I have formed the opinion that
for kids to handle the surf conditions and compete
well it is vitally necessary to commit them to a strong
swimming program during the week, building
strength, stamina and technique. This will be a major
initiative of the junior Committee in the forthcoming
season.
A number of other persons were significant in their
support at our Sunday program, including Jon Neilsen,
Rob Bressan and our Age Managers including Peter
and Lee Blowes, who at one stage handled about four
age groups. Other parents “chipped in” and assisted
where possible, including Paul Mulvihill. There are
too many to remember to thank, so if I have missed
you please accept my thanks and the thanks of the
Committee for your support and contribution to our
kids.
Competition
In our rebuilding phase it was obvious to all in sundry
that the Club lacked a number of elite competitors.
Nevertheless, Tayla Neilsen, Zac Orchard, Zach
Featherstone, Jacob Blowes and Jaeden Sasaki clearly
proved in competition that they were in a class of their
own and well deserved the elite competitor status.
They competed in a number of carnivals and all made
a number of State Finals. Of particular note was the
performance of Tayla Neilsen who competed up an
age group in the Senior State winning the U15 Surf
Race. Also of note was Zach Featherstone’s successful
attempt at winning the State Ironman and Surf Race
in the U12 age group. Well done Tayla and Zach and
all the other competitors who made State finals.
My special thanks go out to the ever present Craig
Thornton who set the beach up every Sunday. In
the few years of my membership I have never seen
the beach looking so professionally organised and
groomed each Sunday morning. This was usually after
Craig had picked up the gear to find that some of it
had been taken during the week and was forced to
make do with what he was left with! After everyone
had left the beach Craig would often be seen on
his own packing up the gear with the help of a few
parents. Thanks Craig we have really appreciated
your efforts.
Club Captain Tayla Neilsen has been a wonderful
inspiration and role model to our Juniors and the
Committee would like to thank her for her wonderful
efforts throughout the season.
Coaching
A number of other members competed in various
competitions and carnivals throughout the season
including Ironmania (Coolangatta) and the Robina
Holden Classic with great results. Encouraging is the
number of new stars that were identified during the
season this included the U11 boys team who started
to perform well together with some good results on
the board. There were other notable performances
from the Club that are too numerous to mention, but
we congratulate all our stars.
The Junior Committee appointed Jayden Stuart to
undertake board training for its more senior members
and Zayne Hamill to train its younger members. These
guys have done a great job in getting our kids out and
through those waves in great style. They have been
terrific mentors and role models and nothing ever
seemed a problem for them. I personally witnessed a
number of sessions including the methodology taught
to the kids about surf conditions. I was absolutely
amazed with the level of skill that these guys had
and conveyed to our kids. It also felt good knowing
that we were giving our kids the best level of training
possible.

see I was severely out numbered so you can well
appreciate that all success from last year should be
really attributed to these ladies. Thanks a lot for your
fantastic efforts ladies.

The future
I look forward to working with the new Junior
Committee in advancing further our efforts of the
past. Firstly, I see the need for more people to “put
up their hand” and take a more active role in our
activities. From my experience this has been a lot of
fun and genuinely rewarding.

We need to effectively utilise this brand, our strategic

sponsorship. In this regard we will continue developing
and enhancing our business and marketing plan and
look forward to building a strong future.

Radio Report
This season saw the movement of the radios
from the patrol office to a new cupboard in the
First Aid Room. The new location is great and
allows easy access to back-up radios and parts
for patrols. It has also meant the first aid room
is accesse more frequently and more people are
becoming familiar with its contents.
There were very few occasions this season where
Surfers Patrol weren’t able to be contacted by
Surfcom and I thank members for being vigilant
in this regard. Extended hours have meant that
batteries have had to last for up to 14 hours. In
some cases where there was a large amount of
traffic on the network, the batteries have tended
to go flat towards the end of patrol. If this happens, there are spare batteries and radios in the
first aid room which and readily available. New
batteries and radios next season should fix this
problem.
My thanks are extended to Scott Andrews for
conducting radio operators courses, ordering
new radios and for maintaining the PA system in
the four wheel drive. Congratulations to all those
members who gained their Radio Operators Certificate. Have a great off-season.

IRB Report
It’s been an interesting season with the IRB’s. We
have a lot of new and capable drivers. Some interesting stunts were pulled but the boats have
come out of the season relatively unscathed,
can’t say the same about some of the people involved…
Also during the off season we have some IRB
Crew and IRB Driver courses going through. If
you need more information please don’t hesitate
to contact myself or Scott Andrews.
Have a great off season and see everyone in the
new season!!!
We have a new IRB arriving soon with thanks to
the Peter Lacey Foundation. The boats and motors are undergoing repairs and fine tuning during the off season so they will be ready for the

Pan Pacific Championships
Last October in the Pan Pacific Masters Champs
Ganga was a member of the over 40’s team which
won gold in their final. In the over 50’s team with
Peter Trevethan and myself, (Wren Bligh was out
with a small operation) we managed to win silver
from the powerful team from Guam.
Early in the year it was difficult once again to field
a full team with players moving up to A grade and
moving interstate but two-thirds into the season
we managed to scramble a fair team together of
mainly juniors and won most of our final matches. It was not enough to get us through to the
final but we have a good young team for next
year with plenty of potential.
Queensland Country Championships
We took out the silver medal at the Queensland
Country Champs in February at Mackay. Mackay
were the winners and as they did not have an
“A” team their “B” team was very strong.
This season was our 30th. season for the Gold
Coast competition and I had the privilege of playing every year. In the first “A grade” Grand Final
in 1978, the “Surfers Slugs” were the winning
team. In September we will be having a dinner
to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Water Polo
on the Gold Coast.
A great year was had and we are looking forward to bigger and better things at the end of
September when the new season starts.

Finally, Surfers Paradise SLSC will be visiting our sister club, Kaike LSC, in Japan in 2007. A team
of nippers, juniors and seniors registered their interest and will be heading to Osaka in August for
around ten days. Kaike is about four hours drive from Osaka. On the team are:
Shane Laker – Team Manager, Stuart Vial’l, Scott Andrews, Khan Hamill, Zayne Hamill, Bobby Garrett,
Breanna Thompson, Norm Forrest, Jane Laker, Andrew Laker, Jordan Vial’l, Oliver Cran, Jacob Blowes,
Jaeden Sasaki
We look forward to bringing you a full report on our return!

Membership of the Surfers Paradise SLSC at the AGM
held 16th July 2006.
consciousness and made a full recovery. Dennis did
the cardiac compressions and Jack ended up with
five cracked ribs. This cured him of his early morning
swims and his wife became a member of the Sea
Gems shortly after and became a great financial
supporter of the Club.
Dennis joined Surfers Paradise in 1975 when talked
into joining ‘Dads Army’, the March Past Team, by
President Bill Pointing and received his Bronze in
1976. Bill Webb was the Chief Instructor at the time
and processing of awards could take a year or more.
Surfers had about two dozen ‘active’ patrol members
then and the Club was struggling to patrol the beach.
Sometimes there was only one patrol member on the
beach to set up for the day and we didn’t have the
luxury of IRBs or even a patrol vehicle. Often only
cadets and juniors would make up the patrol numbers
during these very dangerous conditions.
Another well publicised rescue in the early 80’s
– after an offshore power boat rolled in cyclonic
seas just south of the clubhouse. Dennis and a very
inexperienced IRB crewman were quickly on the
scene to recover the crew. Grahame Long from the
Bulletin won a photographic award with a series of
shots taken from a helicopter that highlighted this
spectacular rescue.
Dennis patrolled from 1975 to 2001/02 but had to
retire due to health problems – during this time he
displayed an unswerving loyalty and dedication to
the Surfers Paradise SLSC and many of the older
generation have shared a beer with Dennis at the
back of the old clubhouse when Bill Pointing would
invite everyone to ‘put $2 in and drink till you drop’.
Dennis gained his IRB Drivers in 1978 and quickly set
about gaining his Senior First Aid and Radio Operators
Certificates; Instructors and Advanced Resuscitation
followed shortly after.
Dennis was a regular with the old Beer Garden chook
raffles every Friday evening and when Bill Pointing
‘retired’ from the raffles, took over until the early
80’s. At this time the raffles were the only source of
income for the Club.
Dennis has had a ‘colourful’ relationship with
various Committees, to say the least, particularly
the Disciplinary Committee, but he always managed
to redeem himself and is certainly worthy of Life
Membership.
He helped construct the Club’s first ever bar in the
old clubhouse around 1977 and built the other two
after that in the present clubhouse –he has painted
the clubhouse interior about ten times and always
managed to acquire items for the Club from the many
shop fitting jobs he did around town.
From all members of the Club, congratulations on
attaining Life Membership of the Surfers Paradise
SLSC.
Dennis used to assist Penny Gerrits (Sea Gems) at
her fashion parade luncheons and garden parties (as
the sound and lighting man) and was a stalwart of
fundraising efforts during these tough times.
He is probably our longest serving Patrol Captain and
over 20 years performed hundreds of rescues and
dozens of resuscitations, a big percentage of these
outside of patrol hours. There are many people from
all around the world that owe their lives to Denis
‘Mungo’ McAullay.
A couple of his most notable rescues were in the late
70’s. Jack Wooten got into difficulties in front of his
home on The Esplanade and it took Peter Reaburn
(Council Lifeguard) and Dennis 20 minutes to get him
breathing with a regular pulse. Dennis accompanied
him in the ambulance to hospital where he regained

Lisle Orchard – Walsh Fellow
Robert Sinclair – Life Member
(3rd June 1914 to 23rd August 2006)
(6th January 1936 to 11th November 2006)
Lisle Vernon Orchard was born 3 June 1914, father to David Orchard and Dawn Blaney nee Orchard who joined Surfers Paradise SLSC with son
David in 1973.
Bob Sinclair joined Surfers Paradise SLSC in 1964
and on attaining his Bronze was, at the time, the
oldest person in Queensland to do so at 28 years
of age. He rowed a surf boat under sweep Max
Christmas for a season then opted for the admin
side and along with Gordon Kitchener as President, was Club Captain in 1968/69 until he left
to live in Papua New Guinea for a couple of years.
On his return the Club was in some difficulties
and he and Gordon were re-elected to their prior
positions in 1973/73. In 1980, Bob was proudly
awarded his Life Membership. He had by then his
Instructors and ARC was a member of the March
Past Team (Dads Army) which did well.
Both he and his late wife Rose were Honorary and
Associate members of the Club helping it through
some very tough times with their expertise in raising money and their hard work ethics. Lisle lent
the Club the money for its first cold room on a pay
it back when you get it basis. As he always said
“if you don’t have cold beer you will never make
money” and he was right. He and Rose with their
catering experience helped make the Club many
thousands of dollars. He also is remembered for
bringing free tea and coffee to the board riding
contests for all to enjoy for well over a decade.
The March Past Team, probably more due to the
average age than for any other reason, disbanded
and some of the members who had lived at the
southern end of the coast joined Tugun SLSC as
their desire to continue competing was still there.
Bob didn’t have the time to spend forming and
coaching another Surfers team as he was heavily into Rugby administration and was still playing
and the season always overlapped so he reluctantly joined Tugun but always his strong loyalty
remained with Surfers Paradise.
In 1999 he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and
lost one kidney. He lived then in Fiji for a year but
returned because of ill health and was then diagnosed with lung cancer which was a secondary
cancer and given six months to live.
In 1996 he and Rose were presented with a Walsh
Fellowship, an honour they received with great
pride. Lisle went to every Australian Title from
1974 to 1999 but failing health stopped him in
the end. Lisle did many things in his life from being a professional boxer, cane cutter, professional
footballer and fought for Australia as one of the
Rats of Tobruk but will always be remembered for
being a great husband, father, grandfather and a
great loyal member to Surfers Paradise Surf Club.

To our members who have lost family and friends

Shane Laker whose father passed away and the
Shelton family on the loss of your dad Brian - our
sincere condolences.
Our mate Keiji with some friends
Keiji Okamoto, 35, was our most senior Japanese
Lifesaver. He was the 2005/2006 Senior Lifesaver
of the Year. He completed 131 hours on the beach
in 2005/2006. He was Vice Patrol Captain of Patrol

all. He was a dedicated and professional lifesaver
and a role model, especially for the younger Japanese lifesavers in our Club.
Keiji was a former Australian Champion in Jiu jitsu

was a wonderful friend to us all and will be greatly

Congratulations…
Thank You
To Randall Schwerdtfeger, The Gold Coast Bulletin and

with so many great photos this past year.
Letter to Khan Hamill
From Peter Anderson – 3rd Dec 2006
“Commendation”
I would like to bring to your attention and commend
the actions of two recent Japanese Bronze holders, Kei
Katayama and Kasumi Tanaka. This morning on Patrol 9 we
were experiencing a strong southerly sweep through the
centre of our flag position, midway into an outgoing tide.
The back bank was exposed with a possible 150 swimmers
in the water at the time, many of whom attempted to
reach the bank unsuccessfully. Both of these girls (who
were not on patrol) positioned themselves in the gutter,
one with a tube and the other with a boogie board and
performed a number of rescues as well as assisting me by
keeping swimmers afloat until we were able to retrieve
them by board and IRB. Both of these girls remained in
the water for over an hour and due to their efforts we
were able to avert what could have been a major incident.
I am very impressed by their
commitment, enthusiasm and
the courage displayed during
these rescues. Please pass
on my thanks for a job well
done.

e. Economic Dependence
Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc is dependent on the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Supporters Club
Inc for funds used to meet it's financial commitments. At the date of this report the committee of management has
no reason to believe the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Supporters Club Inc will not continue to support Surfers
Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc.
Inventories acquired at no cost, or for nominal consideration are valued at the current replacement cost as at the
date of acquisition.
d. Inventories
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and current replacement cost.
All revenue is stated net of the amount of goods and services tax (GST).
Revenue from the rendering of a service is recognised upon the delivery of the service to the customers.
Interest revenue and distribution income from investments is recognised on a proportional basis taking into
account the interest rates applicable to the financial assets.
Donations and bequests are recognised as revenue when received unless they are designated for a specific
purpose, where they are carried forward as prepaid income on the balance sheet.
Grant revenue is recognised in the income statement when it is controlled. When there are conditions attached to
grant revenue relating to the use of those grants for specific purposes it is recognised in the balance sheet as a
liability until such conditions are met or services provided.
c. Revenue
Revenue from the sale of goods is recognised upon the delivery of goods to customers.
b. Cash and Cash Equivalents
Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at-call with banks, other short-term highly liquid
investments with original maturities of three months or less, and bank overdrafts.
Accounting Policies
a. Income Tax
No provision for income tax has been raised as the entity is exempt from income tax under Division 50 of the
Income Tax Assessment Act 1997.
Basis of Preparation
Reporting Basis and Conventions
The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on historical costs. It does not take into
account changing money values or, except where stated, current valuations of non current assets. Cost is based
on the fair values of the consideration given in exchange for assets.
The following is a summary of the material accounting policies adopted by the entity in the preparation of the
financial report. The accounting policies have been consistently applied, unless otherwise stated.
The financial report is for Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc as an individual entity, incorporated and
domiciled in Australia. Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club Inc is an association incorporated in Queensland
under the Associations Incorporation Act 1981.
NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
The financial report is a general purpose financial report that has been prepared in accordance with Australian
Accounting Standards including Australian Accounting Interpretations, other authoritative pronouncements of the
Australian Accounting Standards Board and the Associations Incorporation Act 1981, Queensland.

g. Critical accounting estimates and judgments
The committee of management evaluate estimates and judgments in the financial report based on historical
knowledge and best available information. Estimates assume a reasonable expectation of future events and are
based on current trends and economic data, obtained both externally and within the entity.
Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing proceeds with the carrying amount. These gains or losses are
included in the income statement. When revalued assets are sold, amounts included in the revaluation reserve relating to that
asset are transferred to retained earnings.
An asset’s carrying amount is written down immediately to its recoverable amount if the asset’s carrying amount is greater
than its estimated recoverable amount.
The assets’ residual values and useful lives are reviewed, and adjusted if appropriate, at each balance sheet date.
Depreciation
The depreciable amount of all fixed assets including building and capitalised lease assets, but excluding freehold
land, is depreciated on a straight line basis over their useful lives to the entity commencing from the time the asset
is held ready for use. Leasehold improvements are depreciated over the shorter of either the unexpired period of
the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements. The depreciation rates used for each class of
depreciable assets are:
Class of Fixed Asset
Depreciation Rate
Leasehold Improvements
2.5%
Senior Club Plant & Equipment
20.0%
Senior Club Motor Vehicles
20.0% - 33.0%
Junior Club Plant & Equipment
20.0%
Revaluations
Increases in the carrying amount arising on revaluation of property, plant and equipment are credited to a
revaluation reserve in members’ equity. Decreases that offset previous increases of the same asset are charged
against fair value reserves directly in equity; all other decreases are charged to the income statement. Each year
the difference between depreciation based on the revalued carrying amount of the asset charged to the income
statement and depreciation based on the asset’s original cost is transferred from the revaluation reserve to
retained earnings.
Subsequent costs are included in the asset’s carrying amount or recognised as a separate asset, as appropriate,
only when it is probable that future economic benefits associated with the item will flow to the entity and the cost of
the item can be measured reliably. All other repairs and maintenance are charged to the income statement during
the financial period in which they are incurred.
Property, plant and equipment that have been contributed at no cost, or for nominal cost are valued at the fair
value of the asset at the date it is acquired.
The carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually by directors to ensure it is not in excess of the
recoverable amount from these assets. The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net
cash flows that will be received from the assets employment and subsequent disposal. The expected net cash
flows have been discounted to their present values in determining recoverable amounts.
Where it is not possible to estimate the recoverable amount of an assets class, the entity estimates the
recoverable amount of the cash-generating unit to which the class of assets belong.
Where the future economic benefits of the asset are not primarily dependent upon on the assets ability to generate
net cash inflows and when the entity would, if deprived of the asset, replace its remaining future economic
benefits, value in use is depreciated replacement cost of an asset.
m. Impairment of Assets
At each reporting date, the entity reviews the carrying values of its tangible and intangible assets to determine
whether there is any indication that those assets have been impaired. If such an indication exists, the recoverable
amount of the asset, being the higher of the asset’s fair value less costs to sell and value in use, is compared to
the asset’s carrying value. Any excess of the asset’s carrying value over its recoverable amount is expensed to the
Income Statement.
l. Financial Instruments
Financial instruments are initially measured at cost on trade date, which includes transaction costs, when the
related contractual rights or obligations exist. Subsequent to initial recognition these instruments are measured as
set out below.
Loans and receivables
Loans and receivables are non-derivative financial assets with fixed or determinable payments that are not
quoted in an active market and are stated at amortised cost using the effective interest rate method.
Financial liabilities
Non-derivative financial liabilities are recognised at amortised cost, comprising original debt less principal
payments and amortisation.
Impairment
At each reporting date, the entity assesses whether there is objective evidence that a financial instrument has
been impaired. In the case of available-for-sale financial instruments, a prolonged decline in the value of the
instrument is considered to determine whether an impairment has arisen. Impairment losses are recognised in
the Income Statement.
k. Leases
Lease payments for operating leases, where substantially all the risks and benefits remain with the lessor, are
charged as expenses in the period in which they are incurred.
j. Comparative figures
When required by Accounting Standards, comparative figures have been adjusted to conform to changes in
presentation for the current financial year.
Cash flows are presented in the cash flow statement on a gross basis, except for the GST component of investing
and financing activities, which are disclosed as operating cash flows.
i. Goods and Services Tax (GST)
Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of GST, except where the amount of GST
incurred is not recoverable from the Australian Taxation Office. In these circumstances, the GST is recognised as
part of the cost of acquisition of the asset or as part of an item of the expense. Receivables and payables in the
balance sheet are shown inclusive of GST.
NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
h. Employee Benefits
Provision is made for the association’s liability for employee benefits arising from services rendered by employees
to balance sheet date. Employee benefits expected to be settled within one year together with benefits arising from
wages and salaries, annual leave and sick leave which will be settled after one year, have been measured at their
nominal amount. Other employee benefits payable later than one year have been measured at their nominal value.
Contributions are made by the entity to an employee superannuation fund and are charged as expenses when
incurred.
NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
f. Property, Plant and Equipment
Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair values less, where applicable, accumulated
depreciation and impairment losses.
Property, Plant and equipment
Property, plant and equipment are measured on the cost basis less depreciation and impairment losses.

Independence
In conducting our audit, we have complied with the independence requirements of Australian
professional ethical pronouncements.
We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a
basis for our audit opinion.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and
disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment,
including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether
due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control
relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial report in order to design
audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing
an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating
the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates
made by the committee, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.
Auditor’s Responsibility
Our responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on our audit. We
conducted our audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. These Auditing Standards
require that we comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan
and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from
material misstatement.
Committee’s Responsibility for the Financial Report
The committee of the association is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of the
financial report in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards (including the Australian
Accounting Interpretations) and the Associations Incorporation Act Queensland 1981. This
responsibility includes establishing and maintaining internal control relevant to the preparation
and fair presentation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due
to fraud or error; selecting and applying appropriate accounting policies; and making accounting
estimates that are reasonable in the circumstances.
