JUST A THOUGHT
“I know of no single formula for success. But over the
years I have observed that some attributes of leadership
are universal and are often about finding ways of
encouraging people to combine their efforts, their talents,
their insights, their enthusiasm and their inspiration to
work together.”

THE CROSS, AGAIN
Enjoy the Fourth of July, Let us Pray for our Nation
PLAN A DATE FOR GRACE AND MERCY JULY 17–19, 2016
OUR GUEST IS FR ROY A LEE, PHD from Atlanta, Georgia
CAN YOU IMAGINE THIS? Jesus is walking that long walk to
Jerusalem with his Apostles (and I would like to think with some of
those women "who provided for them one of their resources “—Mary
Magdalene, Joanna, Chula, Susanna). Then He appoints seventytwo others to go out ahead of him in pairs of two to announce that
the Good News is coming. Jesus tells them to say: "The Kingdom of
God is at hand for you.” Here we are on this long journey and Jesus
takes the time to gather seventy-two of his followers, gives them
instructions as to how to act and how to deport themselves and tells them to go out
and bring this Good News. We have no idea how long this took. But they return happy
and exhausted, and full of questions and observations. Jesus tells them, “Do not
rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are
written in heaven.” The Cross is in the background of this experience.
THESE WEEKS we have been reading through Paul’s letter to the Galatians. “In
the Apostle Paul’s letters, especially in Galatians, Paul sees boasting as the core of the
spiritual sins that haunt the church. Boasting reflects more than just a problematic
personality or character trait. For Paul, boasting in anything other than Christ is a sign
of the “old creation,” a refusal to be transformed by Christ into a “new creation.” The
cross, though is the emblem of how the old ways are made new in Christ.” That old tool
of Roman capital punishment Paul sees because of Jesus’s dying on it an instrument
of salvation for everybody. In our own lives, it is not to boast about what used to define
us but to give glory to God who causes the transformation of our old selves into a new
creation.
What it means to be a “new creation” for Paul is to be transformed by the cross of
Christ and in light of our eternal goal and purpose into people who glory in the love of
neighbors and of God and not our achievements. Paul did not stop being the apostle
who “worked harder than any of them,” nor should people stop using their gifts to be
the best ski instructor, or the best rapper, or the best teacher. But for Paul “new
creation” gives thanks to God, acknowledging that “it was not I, but the grace of God
that is with me.” (I Cor. 15:10).
JUST AS LAST week our confirmandi were marked in a special way by the
sacrament of Confirmation, over the many years of our living in Christ we have gained
marks. "They may not be physical but emotional, spiritual or psychological. These
marks might not be visible, but they too are signs of “new creation,” of the times when
we have been marked by our love of Christ. They do not make us as weak or strong
but as members of Gods family, those who seek to be transformed as “new creations:
who boast only in the cross.” [See America, June 20-27,2016]
St. Charles Lwanga Eucharist Celebration
July 3, 2016
Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Mass Intentions: People of St. Charles Lwanga
PROCESSIONAL:
LORD HAVE MERCY
GLORIA
OPENING PRAYER
First Reading Isaiah 66:10-14C
Thus says the LORD: Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, all you who love
her; exult, exult with her, all you who were mourning over her! Oh, that you may suck fully of the milk
of her comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts! For thus says the LORD: Lo,
I will spread prosperity over Jerusalem like a river, and the wealth of the nations like an overflowing
torrent. As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms, and fondled in her lap; as a mother comforts
her child, so will I comfort you; in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.
When you see this, your heart shall rejoice and your bodies flourish like the grass; the LORD's
power shall be known to his servants.
Psalm Response: Psalm 66:1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20
Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.
Second Reading: Galatians 6:14-18
Brothers and sisters:
May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has
been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does
uncircumcision, but only a new creation. Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule and to the
Israel of God.
From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers and sisters. Amen.
ALLELUIA
Verse before the Gospel
Let the peace of Christ control your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.
Gospel Luke 10:1-12, 17-20
At that time the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to
every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers
are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way;
behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and
greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a
peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. Stay in the
same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not
move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is
set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.' Whatever
town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say, 'The dust of your town
that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.' Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at
hand. I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom on that day than for that town."
The seventy-two returned rejoicing, and said, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us
because of your name." Jesus said, "I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Behold, I
have given you the power to 'tread upon serpents' and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy
and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but
rejoice because your names are written in heaven."
HOMILY
PROFESSION OF FAITH
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth of all things visible and
invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all
ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial
with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from
heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and
rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the
Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness
of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL
The 2016 Catholic Services Appeal is
well underway. Gifts to the CSA make possible
a wealth of ministries, programs, and services
that touch the lives of thousands throughout the
Archdiocese of Detroit each day. Our Holy
Father, Pope Francis, has invited all Catholics
to renew their personal relationships with our
Savior, as “the joy of the Gospel fills the hearts
and lives of all who encounter Jesus.” In this
spirit, the theme of the 2016 Catholic Services
Appeal is Celebrate the Joy of the Gospel.
Thank you to the many who have already
pledged their gifts. If you have yet to make your
gift, please prayerfully consider the most
generous gift possible to support the 2016
