Message from our Executive Director: That is Exactly What We Have Been Saying! As an agency that specializes in building social skills through home and community based services, it is reaffirming to see that a recent disability blog published a story praising the importance of inclusive practices for those with disabilities. In this specific example, a 12 year old with autism functioned just fine in an afterschool program, where he colored independently, yet alone, everyday. Since he appeared content, the staff assumed he was making progress just by being part of their “inclusion” curriculum.. After training from the non-profit organization, Kids Included Together, the staff realized that the absence of social stimulation neglected to offer the most important learning opportunity for this population. Inspiration equaled change, thus the program began to include those with disabilities in activities such as group games, structured social skill groups, and outside sports. Based on these inclusions, positive - actually remarkable, changes occurred for the, once solitary, children. At Kaleidoscope, we understand the significance of social inclusion. Fostering social interaction with our many social groups keeps our consumers growing and developing; and that’s what we call growth! Source: www.makeractices-help-kids-grow/ How do we define gratitude and celebration? It’s with emphasis on all that we do as a team to add beauty and joy to each other. It is with my deepest appreciation that I am able to make a difference in the lives of our consumers, their families, and all of the stakeholders that surround us. Kaleidoscope proudly hosted over 50 social groups last month, began peer support groups and continued to offer family support forums for parents and caregivers with topics focused on making life easier, as well for for as more productive in this ever-changing world that we live in. On the subject of service, this is the time of year for giving. Kaleidoscope will participate in many philanthropic opportunities aimed to help those in need. How do you define gratitude and celebration? Write to us and let us know your thoughts on this topic. Let’s share in the joy of this holiday season. Warmly yours, Dr. Tara Colleen Macatee Wow Heather! It’s your first go-cart ride!
