Dear Readers, April is always the month when I tell all the
poor souls who didn’t make it to the National that they missed
one of the best so far and here it is again. You missed gorgeous puppies and dogs, the most entertaining Top 20 event
ever in my opinion, musical entertainment that included a

President’s Message
The National Specialty held in Lexington, Kentucky, the first
week of this month was another huge success thanks to the meticulous efforts of National Show Chair, Cindy Scott. The success of this
show was also due, in no small part, to the tireless efforts of Jan
Swayze-Curry and the hard working crew of people with whom she
surrounded herself. Performance Director, Lisa Costello, and all the
people who helped run the performance events should also be very
proud of their achievements. I would like to thank each and every
person involved with this show for making it the triumph that it was.
Winning the National Specialty under judge Harriet Lee this
year was Ch. Brushwood’s Moxi of Endeavor owned by Angie Diehl,
Linda Stewart and Dr. Dennis Sumara. This was “Moxi’s” third Best of
Breed at the AWC National making her the only Whippet in history to
do so. Congratulations to both her owners and breeders (Linda Stewart, Dr. Dennis Sumara and Raymond Yurick) on this fantastic win.
Congratulations also go to the owners and breeders of the
Whippets who won at each of the performance events. I will refer you
to the Performance Director’s report for the details of the performance
events and each of those winners.
I would like to thank Mary Dukes and all of the AWC members who helped with the judge’s education program presented at the
show. Properly understanding the function and aesthetics of the
Whippet make this program, in my opinion, crucial for the future of
our breed as it is seen and judged in the conformation ring.
Along those lines, Mary Dukes presented the final version of
the Whippet Illustrated Standard that she and her committee: Iva
Kimmelman, Tracy Hite, David Samuelson, Karen Andauer, Robin
Brown, Phoebe Booth, and Chris Durance-Watkins, have approved.
Thank you to every member of this committee for all of the hours of
work put into this document. And special thanks to Robin for all of the
illustrations and all of the time spent on the art work. The next step in
getting the IS out is finding a printer. Once the IS has been printed a
copy will be sent to every AWC member/member household.
As you may already be aware, Lisa Costello, Scot Northern,
and Cindy Scot were elected to the Board of Directors Class of 2014. I
offer my congratulations to all three. I would also like to welcome
Scot who is new to the Board. He brings a new voice to our mix and I
look forward to working with him over the next year.
The AWC officers for the next year were elected at the Board
meeting that immediately followed the Annual meeting and they are:
President – Russell McFadden; Vice-President – Scot Northern; Secretary – Cindy Scot; Treasurer – David Samuelson.
A bit of controversy surrounded the Annual Meeting this
year. A petition signed by 49 members present at the meeting was
read. The petition questioned the process by which the Board appointed tellers for the ballot counting of the annual Board election.
The complaint was also filed with Michael Liosis the Director of the
Club Relations at the American Kennel Club. Mr. Liosis is reviewing the
complaint and will submit his findings and recommendations to the
AKC Board of Directors for final resolution. Once the AKC Board has
made its final decision/ruling the membership will be notified either
through this column or a mass email or both.
John Heffernan, the AWC Versatility Chair, has resigned from
this position for personal reasons. I would like to thank John for all of
the work he put into making the Versatility competition what it is today. John will stay on in his capacity as Chair until his replacement is
found.

SECRETARY’S REPORT
FROM THE AWC VERSATILITY CHAIR
Japanese Animal Relief
The AWC has donated $500 thru AKC to help
with relief for the many dogs that are homeless
or injured in Japan after the terrible earthquake.
I am resigning from my position as AWC Versatility Chair. The
primary reasons are personal. It is difficult to find the time and
resources to attend the National and run the Award of Versatility
and Versatility Competition with a four year old son. I am finding
it hard enough to continue to compete with Wyatt and Patriot on
a monthly basis. Also, I have a new superintendent and will be
having a new school principal and it can be difficult to make the
special arrangements to get time off outside of regular school
holidays.
It has been my pleasure to serve the club in this role for past 5
years to promote Whippet versatility. During that time, we totally revamped and modernized the AV awards and created the
Versatility Competition, which includes lure coursing, conformation, agility, and rally. I thank Dr Lisa Costello for supporting
these major efforts. In addition, all the previous AV winners
have been catalogued and posted on the AWC web site. I have
indicated to Lisa that I more than willing to help make this transition successful for the new chair and I can also stay on until a
new chair is found.

FUTURITY 2011
The 2011 Futurity was held on Tuesday, April
5, 2011 and judged by Mr. Calvin Perry of Appraxin Whippets.
Congratulations to the 2011 Best in Futurity
winner from the 10-12 month bitch class:

The 28th Annual Futurity had 107 Futurity
entries representing 45 nominated litters.
There were 48 ballots mailed out with 28 final
ballots returned. The firm of Joseph E. Miller
counted ballots for judge’s selection.
Prize money was awarded as follows:
Best in Futurity - $1113.00.
Class placements:
1st place – $82.68, 2nd place – $62.01, 3rd place
– $41.34, and 4th place – $20.67.
The 2012 Futurity will be held April 17, 2012,
in Huron, Ohio. Nominated litters born on or
after October 6, 2010 to and including October
17, 2011 are eligible for the 2012 Futurity.
I would like to thank Mrs. Wendy Clark for
her continued support and expert stewarding of
the Futurity Ring. I would also like to thank
Rhonda Gifford for formatting the pedigrees for
the catalog and for filling in as a steward in Pat
Dresser’s absence. I would also like to thank
my husband, Mike Slater, for all his work compiling the pedigrees for the catalog.

AWC SOUTHERN REGIONAL SPECIALTY
2011
This year, the 2011 Southern Specialty will honor Calvin Perry
with the artwork being done by Yvonne Sovereign for the plates
and winners platters. Everyone entered in the MAWA Specialty is
invited to join us in honoring Calvin Perry at 4:30 PM at a party
at the home of David and Regina Howton. The address is 155
Forrester Lane, Canton, GA 30115. All food and beverage will be
provided by the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Association.

SHOW CHAIR REPORT
The Lexington National
The 2011 National is now a GREAT memory and I
have to take a few minutes to thank people for putting
together one of the best.
Jan Swayze Curry absolutely amazed me. Being the
artistic person she is added that extra little something
to the whole week. From special t-shirts for the field
trials to the beautiful center pieces at the banquet she
and her crew did an outstanding job. The catalog layout
was also done by Jan and I thought it was one of the
best ever. She’s even offered to do it next year. I
know this wouldn’t have been as easy if she hadn’t had
the backing and help of her family, Steve, Louis and
Grahm. The trophies as usual were outstanding and a
variety of different kinds for different events. Jan made
my job soooo easy this year!
I will briefly say (because Lisa will have a performance report next month) that the field trials, with huge
entries, ran smoothly and finished before dark! Steve
Curry and his crew get a great big hats off from me.
Speaking of crews, several people really stood out for
me for their never ending help. Red Tatro, Rhonda Gifford and Jan Schmidt, I swear, NEVER slept. Brad
Briscoe, all the way out from California is another one.
He was out there at the crack of down for both field
trials and every time I turned around he was doing
something for someone.
Pat Dresser messed up her back and couldn’t be with
us until the last 2 days, but Wendy Clark and Steve
Heath jumped in and took over as able bodied stewards and Harriett’s ring ran smoothly. Our secretary
Rita Stovall always keeps things in order and I never
have to worry about paperwork, thank goodness!
Alice Vandenbussche couldn’t be with us this year so
Sharon Sakson stepped in and ran a great Parade of
Honors, and Denise Tatro was always sitting there at
the table taking care of all the logo items, which were
awesome. Every year Libby Rice and Mary Titus sit
there day after day selling catalogs or doing whatever is
necessary to help out and Yvonne Sovereign did her
usual great job of taking care of the vendors.
Jan had the brilliant idea to hire some “juniors” to help
with cleanup and under the tutelage of Crystal McNulty,
the grounds were kept in pretty good shape. It seems
there is a never ending battle with getting people to
pick up after their dogs. Why is that?
The Futurity, ably run by Kathy Slater appears to be
an effortless undertaking every year for her, with the
help and computer wizardry of her husband Mike.
Last year we decided to do a combined raffle with
WRAP and the WHF. We brought in a little over $4,000
which we split three ways.
Thanks to Mary Alderman and her mom for being there
every day taking care of all the raffle needs. And thanks
to the other folks who stepped in and helped during the
week.

website. Even after the fact she has been adding results
AND she is doing it for next year.
The health clinics are a huge part of our National now
and there are a great number of people who volunteer to
help so thanks to all that made that happen.
There were some great ads this year all in a special
place in the catalog. Thanks to Chris Watkins for working
on this.
The Top 20 was exceptionally nice this year. Harriet
Vincent asked each participant to choose music to go
with their dog and it really added pizzazz. Linda
Waggoner did a great job with the help of her husband
Ron and the committee. Sue Carbajal and Jackie Hubble
were madly selling raffle tickets for some great items this
year.
Gail Boyd had the dubious honor of motorhome parking
and I hear was giving out Easter baskets!
Irene Mullauer and Sami Hirko pulled off another great
Obedience and Rally day with a LOT of help from Marina
Caro.
And I can’t end without thanking all the judges that
made this a special week for everyone.
Some special thank you’s from me:
Lisa Costello busts her butt all year long to pull together all of our performance information, then with as
many events as we have each year, she works tirelessly
on those…AND works on the health clinics AND trains
her dogs, She’s my sounding board and best listener all
year, thank you dear friend.
I certainly can’t go without thanking my roommates,
Christine and CJ who keep me going all week. CJ and I
promise to have something special again for Whippet
Idol next year.
Please, please please accept a heartfelt thank you from
me to all of you that attend and help out. This is what
makes this one of the best Nationals in the country.
VETERAN SWEEPS---YES OR NO??
I’ve had several people talk to me about eliminating
Veteran Sweeps and replacing it with something educational. In some ways it does seem redundant because
99% of those entered are also in the regular veteran
classes.

INTRODUCTION:
AWC’s Newest Board Member
During my 10 years in the breed, I have been an
active member of several kennel clubs, both all breed
and performance, including obedience, agility, and
coursing (I also helped start an AKC Coursing Club in
the Cedar Rapids area). This club membership has
included serving as an all breed club President for two
consecutive terms, sitting on that board for 5+ years,
and acting as their Judges Selection Chairman for 5+
years as well. As a member of that club I helped organize and direct the formation of an all breed cluster
show, over Labor Day weekend in Beautiful Amana, IA,
as well as running an AWC Supported Entry for those 5
years at that show. That cluster show has turned into
one of the largest in the Midwest, and has seen Whippet Majors all 4 days of the show since its inception
(shameless plug).
Additionally, in 2008, the Cedar Rapids area saw terrible flooding and forced the displacement of tens of
thousands of people, and a dire need for animal relief
efforts. I was appointed Public Information Officer for
the Cedar Rapids Animal Relief Effort and tasked to
work closely with the city, HSUS, and dog community. It was a daunting task maintaining peace between those groups, getting assurances from City
Council that no animals would be put down, and distributing accurate information to the media and internet. I also spearheaded the fund raising efforts for
this relief event to a total of over $50K in donations
from clubs all over the world, $100K+ in supplies from
Petco, Petsmart, and others, as well as donations from
the AKC for $10K to the Cedar Rapids shelter and the
Iowa City shelter.
I live in North Liberty, Iowa, and I am owned by 2
Whippets. When I am not involved in dog activities, I
am a Senior Software Engineer for ACT, Inc in Iowa
City, Iowa. I hold two Bachelor of Science degrees; my
first is in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from
Bradley University, while my second is in Management
Information Systems from the University of South Florida.
My experience above, as well as my active involvement on numerous Whippet lists and Whippet message
boards over the last 10 years, I feel, has given me the
reputation amongst the dog fancy (both Whippet and
across the country for other breeds) as someone who
is not only a communicator, but a problem solver,
peace keeper, and logical, thoughtful person.

The change in venue for the Eastern Specialty was over all
a success. The exhibitors were pleased with the no charge
parking and they were able to park close to the building as
were the motor homes. There was ample room to exercise
the dogs. Plenty of space was provided for crating. We
were not able to have our usual luncheon but I think next
year if our entries are up, we will be able to have the same
ring set up and will be able to bring in the delicious
dishes provided by the exhibitors.

WRAP Report: Parade of Rescues

Whippet Rescue and Placement (WRAP) hosted a Parade
of Rescues at the American Whippet Club's National Specialty Show on April 8 in Lexington, Kentucky, putting a
spotlight on dogs in need of assistance. Mistress of ceremonies and WRAP President Barbara Henderson, noted
that volunteers took in almost 200 Whippets in 2010.
Renee Kirchen of Wisconsin attended with her two rescues, 11-year-old Boo and 5 1/2-year-old Hugo. Boo, one
of 16 rescued all at once in Minnesota in 2005, was so
named because of his numerous cuts and wounds, or "boo
boos." He had been at the bottom of the pecking order in
that situation. He also was treated for Lyme's disease and
required a dental cleaning. Kirchen credits the late Marilyn
Thyes with his rehabilitation. She had him for six months
and Boo even obtained a Canine Good Citizen award while
with Thyes. Rescue Hugo came from North Carolina and
hadn't been socialized properly, Kirchen said.
“Hugo is still hesitant around new situations and strangers who make direct eye contact, especially men and children,” she said. “When you meet Hugo, please be patient
and let him approach you when he's comfortable with his
surroundings and newer people.”
Daisy Mae of the "Maryland 6" rescues in 2005, made an
appearance at the parade, the third she has participated
in. Although her age is unknown, Daisy is obviously getting
on in years but is still as feisty as ever, occasionally bossing around the young'uns and demanding treats. Although
she had a stroke, she gets along well and even enjoys a
hippity hopping sprint around the yard a few times a week.
Miss Lucy Andrews was accompanied by owner Annie Andrews of Fairfax, Virginia. This was Lucy's sixth parade.
The 12-year-old Lucy has earned a number of titles over
the years, including a Companion Dog and Rally Excellent
titles in obedience. She has earned two high-in-trials by
winning the Veterans Obedience classes at the 2007 AWC
Specialty in Kansas City and again at the 2009 National in
Atlanta.
Bill and Sherri Bowman brought Bisbee, who is 8 to 9
years old and who was adopted through Indiana WRAP
volunteers Peggy and Steve Bea. When he came into Rescue, Bisbee had frostbite from having been left outside.
After treatment, he went home with the Bowmans. Sherri
Bowman describes him as a “total love bug.” “He wants to
be wherever I am, so he gets to go on many walks and
excursions,” she said. “We hope and pray for many more
years with Bisbee. Don't you just love that feeling you get,
driving home from work, with that big smile on your face
because you're thinking of your dogs? Dogs are the best
thing God created!”
Bisbee was the second Whippet that the Bowmans
adopted through the Beas. Unfortunately their girl
Amadora passed away just before the National at the age
of 16, and their description of her brought tears to the
eyes of many in the audience at the parade. “We will forever cherish her kisses, her smiles, and the love she has
given us,”they said. “She has done so much more for us
than we could ever do for her.”
Bevalee Crawley of Maryland brought her 11-year-old
rescue, Annie, to the parade. She described the problems she had when she first got Annie, including worms
and separation anxiety. She has since blossomed into a
wonderful companion, Crawley said, and in fact, has excelled in obedience, agility, flyball, rally, freestyle and
even therapy work. Immediately following the parade,
Crawley entertained the crowd doing a freestyle dance
demonstration with her other Whippet, named Whisper.
The two showed off their moves to the song, "Last
Dance," by Donna Summer and drew applause for their
fancy footwork.

Breed-Specific Causes of Death in Dogs Revealed in Landmark Study
ScienceDaily (Apr. 19, 2011) —
Dog owners and veterinarians have long relied on a mix of limited data and anecdotal evidence to assess
which breeds are at risk of dying from various conditions, but a new University of Georgia study provides a rare
and comprehensive look at causes of death in more than 80 breeds.
The study, published in the current edition of the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, can be used to create breed-specific health maintenance programs and is a starting point for future studies that will explore the
genetic underpinnings of disease in dogs.
"If we can anticipate better how things can go wrong for dogs, we can manage their wellness to keep them
as healthy as possible," said study co-author Dr. Kate Creevy, an assistant professor in the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine.
Creevy and her co-authors examined data from the Veterinary Medical Database to determine the cause of
death for nearly 75,000 dogs over the 20-year period of 1984 through 2004. They classified the deaths by organ system and disease process and further analyzed the data by breed, age and average body mass. Eightytwo breeds are represented in their study, from the Afghan hound to the Yorkshire terrier.
While some of the findings corroborate smaller, breed-specific studies, the UGA researchers also found plenty
of surprises. Toy breeds, such as Chihuahuas and Maltese, are known to have high rates of cardiovascular disease (19 and 21 percent of deaths within the breeds, respectively), for example, but the researchers found that
Fox Terriers also have high rates of cardiovascular disease (16 percent of deaths). Golden retrievers and boxers
are known to have high rates of cancer (50 and 44 percent of deaths, respectively), but the researchers found
that the Bouvier des Flandres actually has a higher death rate from cancer (47 percent) than the boxer.
Creevy noted that the previously unknown high risk of cancer in the Bouvier, a relatively rare breed, highlights
the power of their comprehensive approach.
"With rare breeds, an individual veterinarian may not see enough cases to be able to develop the opinion on
whether the breed has a high incidence of conditions such as cancer," Creevy said. "But if you analyze records
that have been compiled over 20 years, you can detect patterns that you wouldn't otherwise notice."
Study co-author Daniel Promislow, a genetics professor in the UGA Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, said
the study may help solve one of the great enigmas of canine health. "Normally, if you compare different species
of mammals, big ones live longer than little ones -- elephants live longer than mice, and sheep are in the middle, for example -- and that pattern holds pretty well across hundreds of different species of mammals," Promislow said. "Within dogs, the opposite occurs; the little dogs live longer."
The researchers found that larger breeds are more likely to die of musculoskeletal disease, gastrointestinal
disease and, most notably, cancer. Smaller breeds had higher death rates from metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and Cushing's disease.
Promislow said dogs are an ideal species in which to explore the genetic basis of disease. There's an unparalleled degree of diversity among breeds -- compare Chihuahuas to Great Danes, for example -- yet all dogs are
of the species Canis lupus familiaris. Within breeds, on the other hand, dogs are genetically very similar.
Scientists first mapped the dog genome in 2003 and have since compiled data on genetic variation at single
points on the genome for more than 80 breeds. By combining the genetic data with the data from their study,
the UGA team can search for genes that influence the risk of diseases such as cancer.
Promislow pointed out that because the building blocks of the dog genome and the human genome are the
same, understanding the genetic basis of disease in dogs can inform human medicine. If specific genes are
found to play a significant role in Cushing's disease in dogs, for example, scientists can assess whether the
same process occurs in humans with the disease, with the ultimate goal of creating new strategies for early diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
"Is genetic variation for disease due to a few genes that vary in the population and have a big effect or dozens or hundreds of genes with small effects? That's a basic biological question that we can address," Promislow
said. "There's potential to learn a lot about the genetics of disease in general using the dog as a model."
Promislow approached Creevy with the idea of collaborating after acquiring gigabytes of data that required a
veterinarian's expertise to analyze. Much of the initial data analysis was performed by former veterinary internal
medicine resident Jamie Fleming, who is now in private practice in Port Washington, Wis.
Creevy noted that Promislow's background in evolutionary biology allows the team to explore questions that
have implications far beyond veterinary medicine. She also pointed out that their collaboration underscores the
potential of interdisciplinary research. "This study is a good example of the unique things that can happen at a
research university," Creevy said.
