President’s Message
As of this writing (March 15) the AWC Eastern
Specialty judged by Cindy Scott is only a few days
off. This is at a new venue and a new time of year for
the Eastern, but it drew a really nice entry so hopefully it will prove to be a good move for the club.
Speaking of specialties, the National is just a
couple of weeks away at this point. Whippet breeder
judge, Harriett Lee, drew a huge entry for the conformation classes this year. The performance events
drew some really big numbers as well which just goes
to show how many fanciers are dedicated to a wellrounded Whippet. I am looking forward to the week
and getting the chance to say hello to old friends and
maybe meet some new ones.
If you are going to be at the National next
month, please plan to attend the annual meeting.
The meeting time has been changed this year to see
if having it in the morning rather than the evening
would bring attendance up.
To update the progress of a couple of committees for you, the Illustrated Standard committee is
now in the process of putting the final drawings together with the wording. Mary Dukes, head of the
committee, is hoping to have a rough draft available
for presentation at the National. The proposed ByLaws changes have been sent to the AKC to scrutinize. The office there will be in touch with me if we
need to make any modifications to the proposed
changes before submitting the final complete version
of the By-Laws as amended to the AKC Board for
their approval. Once AKC has approved the new
document it will then go to the membership for ratification.
The Board recently acted on the applications
of three individuals. I would like to welcome Angie
Bass, Cecil R. Brown and Sharron Lane as the newest
members of the AWC.
Have safe travels to Lexington. Until the next
time, take care and have fun with your Whippets.

Wednesday, April 6th.
If you have Board agenda items that you would like to have
discussed, please email me or give me a call before the same

AKC CAR Canine Support & Relief Fund Accepting
Donations for Disaster Relief in Japan
In light of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan, many
fanciers and concerned dog owners have asked us how they
can help the companion animal victims of these tragedies.
If you are interested in offering your assistance, we encourage contributions to our AKC Companion Animal Recovery Canine Support and Relief Fund._
(https://www.akccar.org/donate/index.cfm?
fund_type=KHRFUND) Started in the wake of 9/11, the fund
has donated more than $3 million to search and rescue teams
and for companion animal relief during natural disasters such
as Hurricane Katrina.
Funds will be donated to appropriate organizations in support
of search and rescue dogs’ efforts to find survivors and to aid in
disaster relief for Japan’s displaced companion animals.
You may go here_ (https://www.akccar.org/donate/
index.cfm?fund_type=KHRFUND) to make a donation and
please note that it is on behalf of “Japan.” Thank you for keeping the Japanese people and their pets in your thoughts.
2011 Top Twenty Reminders
Here is another reminder about the Top Twenty Raffle items. You can buy tickets on PayPal as well as
order a catalog and buy admission tickets.
http://awctop20.com/raffle.html
We have two really unique items. Both donated to
honor great Whippets.
One very special and unusual item was donated
by Deborah and Maurice Bahm. Deborah arranged
to have a gorgeous quilt made by Sally Papin in
honor of Redford and Victoria. Take a look at it.
You will not see another one like it. Wouldn't it look
great on your couch or hanging on your wall?
The second was donated to the raffle by Jackie
Hubble. It is a porcelain statue of running Whippets
— a great mantel piece. Jackie is honoring both
Redford and Emma with this donation. They are
both past Top Twenty winners.
I can personally vouch for the "Body Shirt" item.
My 13 1/2 year old girl wears hers all the time. It is
comfortable, warm, attractive, washes well and she
loves to have it on.
There's a really cute pair of flip flops if you wear
size 8. Also a lovely silver pin, two Laurelwood collectable Whippet plates, an original brass Whippet
bust, and a gift certificate to Fuzzywumpets.
We are adding music to the event this year.
Every dog will have a song played as background
music while they are in the ring--each song selected
for the dog by the owner.
I want to mention again about the refreshments
on the night of the Top Twenty event — we will be
serving dessert only. There will be a cash bar — and
Starbucks coffee available near the show room.
We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Joan Gibb Damon
Joan Gibb Damon, a 50-year resident of the Monterey
Peninsula, passed away in Monterey on January 1. Born in
Kelowna, BC, Canada, she lived with her family in China
before they moved to Hawaii in 1939. Joan was a senior at
Roosevelt High when Pearl Harbor was bombed and she
went to work for the Signal Corps at Hickam AFB. In 1946,
she married Sam R. Damon, a descendent of Samuel Mills
Damon and the Damon Estate, once Hawaii's fourth-largest
private landowner. Joan graduated Cum Laude from Hawaii
Loa College in 1944, majoring in communication and the
arts. Joan was one of the first women in Hawaii to play golf
and will always be remembered as one of the best. She gained
notoriety for her prodigious golf game, winning 23 major
titles with remarkable focus and a gift for going long. In 1989,
Joan was the second woman inducted into the Hawaii Golf
Hall of Fame after Jackie Pung. She is the only golfer to win
the Jennie K - Hawaii's most cherished women's title - six
times including four in a row from 1961 through 1964. Joan
also captured five straight women's stroke-play titles.
Joan's tall stature and huge game were imposing but she was
also extremely kind, a fascinating contrast. "Everybody was
intimidated by her because she was such a good golfer," recalls
Bev Kim, another Hall of Famer. "But she was really nice and
like a mother to me." Kim was in high school when she met
Damon who was the 1958 Japan Amateur Champion and
still winning titles in her late 40s. Both took lessons from the
legendary Guinea Kop and became good friends despite being
a generation apart in age. While living in Hawaii, Joan was
active in Junior League and the Red Cross and volunteered at
Queen's Hospital. She also helped establish the Hawaii School
for Girls. Joan has made her home in Pebble Beach for the last
37 years with her companion, Robert Albanese. During this
time, she enjoyed many visits to Hawaii until a car accident
in 1995 limited her traveling. Joan was recognized as an
owner and breeder of Whippets. She was a member of the
Del Monte Kennel Club and her Whippets won Best of Breed
three times at the Westminster Dog Show.
In addition to her companion, Robert, she is survived by her
daughters, Sharon Damon of the Monterey Peninsula and
Madeleine Wright of Pebble Beach; two grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren. Her husband, Sam, preceded her in
death in 1957.

The Whippe t News  march 2011
October 11, 1924 - January 1, 2011
In the Whippet world, Joan was known for being a
connoisseur of fine show Whippets, who supported the
careers of a veritable who’s-who of top Whippets in the 1990s
and early 2000s. Almost yearly in during this time, Joan, in
partnership with handler Mary Dukes, had the number one
Whippet. Joan enjoyed the success of her Whippets and had
notable success as the co-breeder of winning puppies from
her Whippets. The kennel name of Poppy Hills graced lovely
Whippets who will live on in many pedigrees.
Joan was always friendly and helpful to newcomers to
the breed and was a gracious presence at the Del Monte
KC shows. She was also a great supporter of the NCWFA
Specialty in its early days.
Joan Damon will be missed by her friends but she will never
be forgotten.

WRAP Report: Rescue Activities at the National
By Ruth Beall
Once again, the American Whippet Club has graciously invited Whippet Rescue and Placement
(WRAP) to have the Parade of Rescues during the 2011 AWC National in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Parade will be held on Friday evening, April 8, at 7 p.m. All rescue Whippets, regardless of
where they were rescued from, are invited to participate.
All rescue Whippets will be winners in this event! Master of Ceremonies for the event will be
WRAP President Barbara Henderson, VMD. Donations for the Whippets and registrations for
the parade are now being accepted. If you have items to donate for the rescue Whippets or
wish to register your Whippet for the Parade, please contact Ruth Beall by email at
rhbeall@hotmail.com (please remove spaces). We will need your name, your Whippet's name,
and a short bio that can be read while you and your rescue Whippet are in the ring. Please
include an e-mail address, phone number, your Whippet's age and a photo of your rescue
Whippet, to be included in the slide show at the WRAP table.
If you cannot attend the National, but would like to have photos of your rescue Whippet included in the slideshow at the WRAP table, please e-mail your photos to Ruth Beall again at
rhbeall@ hotmail.com.
This year, WRAP will be joining the AWC and the Whippet Health Foundation with a joint fund
-raising table, and the proceeds will be split three ways. Mary Alderman is accepting items for
this joint activity and she can be reached by email at malderman@jaamawhippets.com.
The WRAP Annual meeting will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, April 8, 2011. You need not be
a member of WRAP to attend. WRAP will have a few items for silent auction, and the winners
will be announced at the meeting.
Please check the WRAP website, http://www.whippet-rescue.com for more information on
WRAP activities at the National and Whippet Whiners’ Club t-shirt sales. The shirt logo reflects
the Lunar Year of the Hare, and a Whippet's dream! Artist Yvonne Sovereign, long-time Whippet owner and WRAP member, has, once again, produced the perfect design for Whippet
Whiners everywhere to enjoy. You can view the awesome design and order your T-shirts and/
or sweatshirts at the WRAP website, http://www.whippet-rescue.com/2011whinershirts.html.
You can order/pay via PayPal or vial snail mail using the order form available on the site. Only
those ordered no later than Sunday, March 6, 2011, will be available before the National.
Thank you, Yvonne, for donating the elegant design for this year's Whippet Whiner's Club
shirts, and to all those who support WRAP! Best regards, and we hope to see you all there!
For more information on how you or someone you know can adopt a Whippet in the Rescue
program, please visit the WRAP website at http://www.whippet-rescue.com, where you will
find a list of Whippets who need homes.
If you cannot adopt, please consider making a donation to WRAP. Donations can be mailed to
WRAP Treasurer Jean Schroeder, 17502 S. 750 W. Wanatah, IN 46390.
