Skirvin Hilton Hotel
Downtown Oklahoma City
Originally constructed in 1911 as the crown jewel of the burgeoning oil and
gas boomtown of Oklahoma City, the Skirvin Hilton Hotel has stood on its
current location in downtown Oklahoma City for more than 100 years. It has
hosted such dignitaries as Presidents Harry Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower and social icons Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra. Restored to its original
condition in 2007, the Skirvin Hilton combines the vintage charm of early
1900s elegance with the modern amenities of a five-star hotel. Guests are
immediately welcomed by the gorgeous crimson curtains and vaulted ceilings
in the hotel’s striking entryway and lobby.
Once in their rooms, guests are invited to
enjoy all of the modern luxuries in a
distinctively boutique setting. This elegant,
one-of-a-kind hotel is the perfect environment for a weekend of heritage, family and
fun in the city affectionately referred to as
the “Pride of the Southern Plains.”

National Bombing Memorial
At 9:02 A.M. on April 19, 1995, the worst home-grown terrorist attack in
American history was launched against the Alfred P. Murrah Federal
Building in sleepy downtown Oklahoma City. The explosion claimed the
lives of 168 Americans, including 19 children, and wounded more than
650 others. In the aftermath of the attack, the State of Oklahoma and the
United States National Park Service constructed the Oklahoma City
National Bombing Memorial on the same site where the Federal Building
once stood. An inscription above the Memorial reads:
“We come here to remember those who were killed, those who survived
and those changed forever. May all who leave here know the impact of
violence. May this memorial offer comfort, strength, peace, hope and
serenity.”
The bombing and subsequent construction of the Memorial served as
the catalyst for a rapid renaissance and transformation of Oklahoma City
into the modern urban center it is today. A tour of the Memorial and
adjacent Bombing Museum is an unbelievably moving experience and
one that visitors to Oklahoma City will never forget.
Bricktown and the Bricktown Canal
The first major reurbanization project in
the aftermath of the bombing was the
renovation of numerous dilapidated warehouses and abandoned streets in the
district just east of downtown known as
“Bricktown.” This included construction of
a canal waterway which allows visitors to
learn of the storied history of Oklahoma
City as they ride on watertaxis surrounded
by the renovated warehouses and waterside bars, restaurants and cafés. Bricktown boasts a vibrant nightlife, numerous
eateries, shops, a state-of-the-art movie
theatre and many other attractions for all
ages.

Midtown, Deep Deuce and Automobile Alley
After the renovation of Bricktown became an overwhelming
success, developers began restoring other historical districts
around downtown OKC, each with its own unique feel and set
of attractions. Midtown has developed around St. Anthony’s
Hospital and includes various restaurants and bars, including
Café Do Brazil and “O Bar,” a stylish rooftop bar providing
beautiful views of the downtown skyline. “Deep Deuce” was
OKC’s historic jazz district and the birthplace of Ralph Ellison,
author of the Invisible Man. Deep Deuce is now home to
places such as WSKY Lounge, a 1920s style speakeasy and
cigar lounge, and Anchor Down, a local watering hole
constructed from recycled steel shipping containers. “Automobile Alley,” the historic site of several car manufacturing warehouses, is situated just north of downtown. The district is now
illuminated by numerous large neon signs and houses several
five-star restaurants, art galleries and a local favorite: the Sidecar Barley and Wine Bar which is located inside a renovated
mechanic’s garage. These expanding districts and others
around downtown will soon be connected by a streetcar
trolley system which is expected to be completed in late 2017.
Vegas-Style Casinos!
Within thirty minutes of downtown Oklahoma City are two
state-of-the-art casinos owned and operated by the Native American
tribes of Oklahoma. A straight shot on the interstate will take visitors
to either the Grand Hotel and Casino in Shawnee or the Riverwind
Hotel and Casino in Norman. Both casinos offer all levels of slots,
table games, poker and diceless craps for endless fun in a Vegas
environment, right in the heart of Oklahoma!
National Cowboy Hall of Fame and
Western Heritage Museum
Oklahoma City is also home to America’s premier institution of Western history, art and culture. The
National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum houses items such as a collection
of firearms owned by John Wayne and artifacts from Lewis and Clark’s famous journey across the
western United States. Upon entrance into the museum, visitors are greeted by the striking End of
the Trail Sculpture, an 18-foot tall replica of James Earle Fraser’s iconic artwork. The museum also
contains a life-size replica of an early western American
town, complete with a school, bank, dentist and
doctor’s offices and saloon. This attraction is a
must-see for lovers of American western films, early
American western history and Native American art.
