Message from the Chair
As you read this, there is less than 6 months left to go before WFC Toronto 2012 and, as
you can imagine, the pace at our end has picked up considerably. I’d like take this
opportunity to highlight a few things in the Toronto area that we think will interest
members.
A visit to the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy should be a
“must” for any WFC member. With its holdings of over 72,000 items it is unquestionably
the largest, noncirculating, research collection open to the public, and is one of seven
special collections within the Toronto Public Library system.
A short walk from the Merril takes you to Bakka-Phoenix Books. It has the distinction of
being the longest-lived sf&f specialty bookstore in the world. Join them at the store as
they celebrate their 40th year of continuous operation.
From October 18th to October 28th, the week leading up to WFC 2012, Toronto holds
its annual International Festival of Authors at Harbourfront Centre. If you arrive in
Toronto early, you’ll want to make time to attend a few of the Festival's readings and
panels.
Two of my favourite museums, the Royal Ontario Museum and the Gardiner Museum
face each other across Avenue Road near Bloor. The Gardiner is a museum dedicated to
ceramic arts through the ages. Special exhibits during your time in Toronto include: The
Chinese Vase Project and Why Make In China? Canadian Artists Go East. The Royal Ontario
Museum is possibly best known for housing “the largest collection of Chinese
architectural artefacts outside of China, including the spectacular Ming Tomb complex
and an ornate reconstruction of a 17th century Chinese Imperial Palace building from
Beijing's Forbidden City.”
Continuing on the Asian theme, the Pacific Mall, just a short drive from our convention
centre, is the largest indoor Chinese Mall in North America. Not surprisingly, there are a
host of good restaurants within easy reach of our hotel.
All of us here in Toronto are looking forward to greeting and hosting you at the World
Fantasy Convention in October!

I’m really excited about this year’s World Fantasy. I’m delighted to be working
with a committee from all over the continent, everyone bringing their own
experiences and fresh ideas to the convention from the opening ceremonies
to the closing World Fantasy Award Ceremonies.
Many of you will have had a taste of what we have to offer at the parties
we’ve hosted in the past year, featuring our wine, Chateau Wendigo (specially
bottled for us by a gold medal-winning winemaker), unique cocktails and
local maple syrup tastings. At past conventions I have met a wide variety of
people and made great connections and life-long friendships. The evenings
will be just as jam-packed with events as the day.
I look forward to meeting you all in Toronto this November.

Hospitality
Banquet
Having sampled the fare for our luncheon, I am really looking forward to the banquet. The three
entrees are quite distinctly delicious, and the four courses work really well together. Seating is limited, so
be sure to get your ticket, all tickets must be ordered by October 17th, 2012, as there will be NO
tickets available at the door for purchase at the convention.

Party Suites
Hospitality is also responsible for suites on the party floor for parties and other events during both days
and evenings. We are finalizing the process for reserving slots in the suites and will be announcing it on
the website soon. The majority of slots will be assigned on a first-come first-serve basis. Contact
hospitality@wfc2012.org for more information or to request a slot. Party suites must be reserved
through Kim Kofmel, at Hospitality.

Hospitality Suite
Our Hospitality Suite will be run by foodie Tammy Coxen, with an emphasis on local flavours. Tammy's
experience ranges from artisanal chocolate making to wine tastings to cocktail classes to supper clubs,
so we know we are in good hands. Stay tuned for more specifics as they evolve!

Interview with Glen Gardner, Executive Chef
On April 17, 2012, Kim Czigarenko and Evelyn Baker were given the unique opportunity to sit down
and interview Glen Gardner, the executive chef of the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel, Suites
& Conference Centre, who designed and will execute the menu for the World Fantasy Convention 2012
Banquet.
A lucky few on the Convention Committee were able to do an advance tasting of the banquet entrees.
They are very excited to share this delicious menu, and what inspires the chef who created it, with the
WFC membership.
Kim: Can you give us a little of your history to start? Where did you go to school?
Chef Gardner: George Brown College. But it’s more important where a chef trained. I trained at the
Constellation Regal Hotel (not there anymore). About three hundred Toronto chefs trained at the
Constellation Hotel. Some have gone on to become famous Canadian Celebrity Chefs. Constellation, at
the time was the biggest banquet hotel in Canada. We did banquets for up to 3,000 people. But there
were thirty apprentices in this kitchen. The Executive Chef was a Master Chef from Switzerland and
emphasized the fundamentals of cooking.
Kim: I saw online that you had the opportunity to travel and be showcased in a food festival. Can you
tell us about that?
Chef Gardner: This was the Canadian Food Festival in Shanghai. It was a food show at a five-star
hotel. It was a chance for me to showcase Canadian food on the menu at the restaurant. I oversaw and
cooked a menu based on traditional Canadian flavours and food for some international promotion of
what Canada has to offer.
Evelyn: What was your most unique and unusual request for an event?
Chef Gardner: The Ratite Association relates to the farming of emus, ostriches and rheas. They held a
convention at our hotel and requested a menu based on this meat source. I made ostrich neck osso
bucco. I also managed to disrupt the supply chain by asking for five to six hundred roasts. The problem
was that this farming was in its infancy and you can only get 2 roasts per bird. I like taking things out
of the normal realm and trying to find ways of making [them] palatable to the largest number of
people possible, so this was a unique case. I’d not make anything like this for most banquets. I’ve also
done a lot of kosher events. I’ve also cooked for Prime Ministers at different hotel events.
Interview with Executive Chef, Cont’d
Kim: What are the types of things you enjoy cooking?
Chef Gardner: I like international food. A variety of different foods together, but, not old-fashioned
fusion. I like to use different tastes to create something unique and leave a lot of different options for
guests. When you’re planning a menu, you can’t go too far from one side to another for banquets. You
can’t be too extreme in tastes. Success comes when the majority of people enjoy their meal. So, don’t
go to extremes. We try to use local stuff as much as we can. If we can’t get local, we at least try to stay
within our borders to as much of a degree as possible. I like to make sure food is seasoned nicely.
We have invested in two highly specialised ovens. They are the kind where you can plug in a filet, at 142
degrees, and it “bings” when it’s done. I have a very good guy on soups and sauces. I have a dedicated
brigade of highly passionate and professional people. In the time I’ve been here, we’ve only lost one
member of our kitchen staff, so I have been working with most of these people a while. They are all
pretty passionate and have an eye for good food. I can’t say enough about how good a brigade I work
with. We share the passion for food.
Kim: So, when you were asked to come up with a menu that reflected Northern Gothic and Urban
Fantasy for World Fantasy 2012, what were your inspirations?
Chef Gardner: I knew you wanted a Canadian bent to the food being served, which is something I do,
but for the themes I had to research your group on your website, get a feeling of what you were about.
Figure out a slot where you might fit. A slot that was unique but not too far right or too far left.
Wording for the dishes was a part of it. Some catch names for different things, coming up with
something that sounded like it would fit. Then, I tried to plan for ingredients that would be local, or
within the borders. My primary goal is to make it taste great. A lot of chefs are into presentation. I
mean, don’t discount presentation, but you have to remember it’s taste over presentation. People
remember taste and feel that you really put time into what they are eating. Presentation without taste is
a failure. Say, if you had a potato salad that looked pretty but didn’t get salted. It would not be
successful. Taste has to be there. For your group, this is not our standard banquet menu. Everything
was created for your group. I’m sure that you will be pleased with what we came up with.
Kim: So, with the rise of the Food Network, and everyone deciding to be an armchair chef, has this
been a boon or a bane to the industry?
Chef Gardner: From an industry perspective, the Food Network is good for industry. Co-op students
now come in with exposure to the kitchen. Going back twenty years, we had to court the actual co-op
student. Starting about eight years back, because of the Food Network we get four to five students
applying. Because the youth is so into it. Because they want to be in it . It’s no longer something
someone “falls into.” Colleges, hotels and kitchens are benefitting from it. It’s always been a challenge
finding good people. Now, you get people wanting to be chefs. For all the apprentices and co-op
students, we bring the health department in to do training. All our staff is trained in food safety. This is
very important to us.
Kim: We’d like to thank you very much for taking your time to do this interview with us.

Programming
The programming for this year's World Fantasy Convention will highlight the dual themes of Urban
Fantasy and Northern Gothic. Each of the two tracks of programming will feature one of the
themes, ensuring that they both receive attention throughout the convention. One of our tasks will
be to provide panels which will enable participants to discuss and debate the many fields of Urban
Fantasy, paying particular attention to our guests who work in that genre. We'll also be looking at the
definition of Northern Gothic, and discussing writers and works in that tradition. The fact that 2012
marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Bram Stoker means that there will be a panel discussing
the impact and lasting effects of Dracula. Another anniversary of note in 2012 is the bicentenary of the
birth of Charles Dickens, author of perhaps the most well-known ghost story of all time, A Christmas
Carol. A panel tentatively entitled "What the Dickens!" will examine the writer's legacy in the
supernatural and fantasy fields.
We'll also be highlighting the work of artists, and hope to include a presentation on cover art and
design. The current state of the industry as regards ebooks and self-publishing will also be highlighted,
looking at the issues both pro and con.
We're hoping to provide a panel designed for new writers, showing what you can expect in the
wonderful world of publishing (and what's expected of you). Late night presentations will include a
flash fiction session, in which writers can stand up and read an original work of no more than 1,000
words.

Art Show
Gallery Momiji, a team of volunteers who love art, is honoured and privileged to present the World Fantasy
Convention 2012 Art Show. The team's director, David Federman, cut his teeth in 2003 at the Anime North
Art Show, subsequently studied the ways of the art show under members of The Team Eh, and has been
running the Anime North Art Show with his gallant crew since 2007. For Gallery Momiji, every show
represents a unique journey with new displays and special exhibitions, and they invite you to join them on
this adventure as we all gather to celebrate fantasy artwork and literature and explore the relationship
between the two.
Applications for the WFC 2012 Art Show are open until July 31, 2012. Information and application forms

Dealers’ Room
Prospective dealers should be aware that the WFC 2012 Dealers' Room is juried and that it will be filled to
the best advantage of the WFC while being as fair as possible to all applicants. We expect to receive far more
space requests than we can accommodate, but we will consider all serious applications equally.
If you feel that the WFC 2012 staff is not likely to know you or your wares, you should include a detailed
description of what you sell, and where you deal, along with your request for consideration. You should also
be aware that the WFC Dealers' Room is very strongly oriented to the printed word in bound book form and
that nonbook dealers are a very small part of the room.
The table rate has been set at $125 CAD for the first table with each subsequent table costing $100 CAD per
eight-foot table. Please note, table fees do NOT include WFC memberships which are required for each
Dealer AND for all of their staff members who will be present during sales hours. As of June 15th, the
initial Dealers Letter and Application Form has been mailed to all potential dealers for whom we have a valid
address.

As the saying goes, "How can you accomplish anything unless people know what you are trying to do?"
The World Fantasy Convention in Toronto, 2012 has a full slate of publicity options on offer.
Donating new books, ARCs/galleys of upcoming or recent titles, and current or recent
magazines/zine issues for the members book bags.
The Membership Book Bag is the first opportunity to make a great impression -- market your new novel,
showcase your new audio book or ebook release to your peers and fans, reintroduce attendees to an old
favourite, or launch the debut novelist you’re excited about. It's also a great way to provide new and
backlist titles from any one of our Guests of Honour, reminding us again just why we love their work.
A donation of 300 to 400 copies of each title, or a donation of 200-300 copies of mixed titles ensures a
good mix circulating among members. If you would like to donate a single title in quantity, one copy for
every member (approximately 950), please email Rina Weisman at publisherliaison@wfc2012.org.
However, no amount is too small, as even 20-50 books gives you a presence and buzz at WFC. For
magazines, a mix of issues, current and past, is a great way to boost subscriptions -- or donate enough
single current issues for one per book bag.
E-books & e-zines: We are currently working on the best way to bring donated ebooks and magazine
downloads to our membership, and will keep you informed.
Sending materials for the literature tables: Members visit this area throughout the convention,
collecting a wide array of information for later reference. Please send no more than 300 of any one
item. Consider sending any of the following to promote yourself, your company, or your books and
authors: promotional pieces like stickers, buttons, posters, bookmarks, flyers, postcards, pens, temp
tattoos, chapbooks, catalogues, 2013 calendars, etc.
CDs of promotional music, DVDs of book trailers magazines/zines subscription and information flyers,
contest flyers, convention and conference flyers, writing workshops
All materials should relate to science fiction, fantasy, horror, and genre literature. Anything containing
work by the attending authors would be especially pertinent and welcome.
Shipping to WFC: We will have a customs broker to assist you if you are shipping from outside
Canada. We're here to help, and make it easy for you. Further shipping details should be available by July

Facilities and Hotels
The World Fantasy Convention will be held at the Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel, Suites &
Conference Centre. It shares conference facilities with the Best Western Parkway Hotel Toronto North.
The 312-room Sheraton Parkway is a full-service hotel offering luxurious rooms and Jacuzzi suites.
Guests of the 129-room Best Western Parkway are entitled to use most of the amenities of the
Sheraton while enjoying economically priced accommodations in recently renovated rooms and suites.
All rooms offer one phone line, with data port, voicemail, high speed internet, coffeemaker, mini
fridge, iron and ironing board, hair dryer and in-room movies. All rooms in the Sheraton have one
additional phone line, and a microwave in the Jacuzzi suites. Both hotels have been rated through the
AAA and the CAA with the Sheraton being awarded a 4-Diamond rating and the Best Western a 3Diamond rating. The complex contains shops of all descriptions, a spa, two recreation facilities,
restaurants, a bar, a coffee shop and a food court downstairs.

Getting to the Convention
BY AIR: Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) is the international airport for Toronto. It’s about
30 minutes away from the hotel by car.
DRIVING FROM THE WEST (or Airport): Highway 401 takes you to Highway 404. Go north on
Highway 404 and exit onto Highway 7. At the lights, turn left and go west on Highway 7. Hotel is 2
lights down on the right-hand side.
DRIVING FROM THE SOUTH: Take Don Valley Parkway North (it turns into Highway 404) and
exit onto Highway 7. At the lights turn left, and go west on Highway 7. Hotel is 2 lights down on the
right-hand side.
DRIVING FROM THE EAST: Take Highway 401 West to Highway 404 North (look for the Don
Valley Parkway sign). Go north on Highway 404 and exit onto Highway 7. At the lights turn left, and
go west on Highway 7. Hotel is 2 lights down on the right-hand side.
DRIVING FROM THE NORTH: Take Highway 400 South to Highway 7. Go east on Highway 7 for
10 miles until you reach Leslie Street. Hotel is on the left-hand side.

Toronto is a world class destination, famous for its diversity in people, attractions, food and
shopping.
Sheraton Parkway Toronto North Hotel, Suites & Conference Centre, is conveniently located
next to one of Toronto's busiest freeways (the 404) and is a 20 minute straight run
downtown. It is located close to all the major freeways in the city including the 401 and the
407 highways. There is also a regional transit stop right outside the front door of the hotel to
connect with the subway which in turn will link you to all of the major attractions.
However, you don't have to go downtown to experience the best of what Toronto has to
offer. Some of the city's greatest dining and shopping is a short distance from the Sheraton
Parkway Toronto North Hotel, Suites & Conference Centre, including some of the best

International Festival of Authors (IFOA)
The International Festival of Authors (IFOA) brings together the best writers of
contemporary world literature for 11 days of readings, interviews, lectures, round table
discussions, and public book signings each October.
The IFOA presents a number of special events, including readings by the Scotiabank Giller
Prize, Governor General’s Literary Awards, and Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize finalists,
as well as the awarding of the Harbourfront Festival Prize.
This year's Festival takes place from October 18th to October 28th, 2012.

Conditions of Membership
The World Fantasy Convention is a gathering of professionals and like-minded individuals that meets annually
to network, conduct business, and celebrate excellence and achievements within the field. Badges must be
worn at all times while participating in the convention.
WFC 2012 has a zero tolerance policy for any harassment and other inappropriate behaviour. WFC
2012 reserves the right to revoke the membership of, and to escort off the premises, any member who
behaves outside the bounds of social decency and/or who contravenes federal, provincial, or municipal laws
and statutes.
Should an incident occur, please contact facility security or the convention chair and/or vice-chair without
delay. Contact info will be posted at WFC.
