THE ORPHEUM THEATRE
2009 ANNUAL REPORT
The mission of the Memphis Development
Foundation, dba The Orpheum Theatre:
To provide quality, diverse entertainment
and education programming to the
Mid-South region while preserving and
improving the historic Orpheum Theatre
and continuing its role in contributing to
the development of the local economy.
A Letter to The Orpheum Family
2009 was a year of challenges and opportunity. The global economy stood center-stage as the most important concern of a business world still recovering from a disastrous 2008. Major international
corporations are still sorting out what went wrong, why, and how to
resolve their problems. For The Orpheum, its problems became opportunities. The stars were in alignment and The Orpheum went from
one of its most difficult years to one of its best.
Contributing to the losses of ’08 were a series of Broadway productions that did poorly everywhere throughout the country. They suffered from the lack of familiarity or branding. People were also cutting back their leisure and entertainment spending due to economic
uncertainty.
The Chairperson
On the other hand, 2009 was impacted by a Broadway series that
consisted of real winners. Led by the first engagement of Wicked and
augmented by The Color Purple, Fiddler on the Roof starring Topol
and Legally Blonde: the Musical, The Orpheum saw subscriptions to
our Broadway series increase, reversing a trend that had been in a
downward spiral.
Our trusted and loyal volunteers, The Theatre’s corporate sponsors,
all of our generous donors, a loyal Board of Directors, our creative
and committed staff, and almost 300,000 patrons made 2009 a success by every standard.
The Orpheum’s education programs settled into a period of refinement and evaluation. The impact of these projects - roughly 17 different efforts aimed at providing the community with arts entertainment
and learning experiences aimed at those ages 5 to 25 - continues to
reach more students and families each year. These programs are expensive and generate little revenue, but the Foundation is committed to making this contribution to the community as a major part of
The Orpheum’s mission statement.
The President
There is much to be said about the theatre business, its contributions
to the community, and its goals and objectives, all of which are part
of this fascinating and unique operation. We hope that this annual
report will help explain the intricacies of what you might think of as
“show business” but also what we consider a major amenity to the
entire Mid-South region.

2009 Enconomic Impact - $34,705,103
Operation of The Orpheum Theatre impacts the Memphis and Mid-South economy in five distinct
ways:
1. Broadway shows bring thousands of dollars in business to Memphis. Each
year, over 1,000 members of the casts and crew of all productions spend
an average of $225 per person per day on hotel rooms, meals, and other
expenses. This economic factor provides a financial impact of $1,579,500.
2. Approximately 220,000 patrons routinely visit The Orpheum Theatre annually, and nearly 33%, or 72,600 of those, come from outside of Shelby County.
While in downtown Memphis, those out-of-town patrons generally spend
a minimum of $140 per person on tickets, dining and parking, for a total of
$10,164,000. An estimated 3% of those 36,300 couples will spend an additional $1,887,600 on hotels at an average rate of $160 per night. This brings
the total annual economic impact for regional visitors to $12,051,000.
3. The largest number of Orpheum patrons are those who reside within Shelby County and peripheral areas in West Tennessee, Eastern Arkansas and
North Mississippi. This demographic accounts for approximately 147,400
patrons per year. They buy their tickets (average of $110 per couple), go
to dinner (average of $95 per couple) and park their car in a downtown
parkign lot (average of $7). The estimated total spent by local couples in
out-of-pocket expenses is $15,624,400.
4. In addition to the economic impact of cast, crew and patrons, The Theatre
has other major annual expenditures that spread millions of dollars throughout the community*.

5. The Orpheum Theatre’s Charitable Giving Program provided more than
$175,000 in contributions, tickets and merchandise to 175 non-profit fundraising events and youth programs throughout the Mid-South last year.
The Orpheum Theatre’s total economic impact
for 2009 was $34,705,103.
The Theatre Business
Few of the world’s cultural amenities - museums, galleries, operas, ballets, symphonies, theatres and
historical/architectural monuments - can survive on ticket sales alone. If not for contributions, sponsorships and other forms of support, none of the cultural treasures we enjoy and sometimes take for
granted would exist. This is not just a Memphis or Orpheum situation - it’s estimated to be true of the
vast majority of the theatres in America, and probably throughout the world.
Other little-known facts about The Orpheum Theatre’s business practices:
• Has a full-time staff of 26 and a part-time staff of over 300
• Depends on nearly 400 Friends of The Orpheum (FOTO) volunteers
• Generated $969,337 in sales tax to state and local governments in 2009
• Has spent over $25 million to maintain, expand and renovate the Theatre since 1980

2009 Programming and Attendance
In 2009, nine Broadway productions graced The Orpheum Theatre stage, resulting in record-breaking attendance.
Legally Blonde: the Musical, The Color Purple, The Wizard of Oz, Cirque Dreams Holidaze and the
three-week engagement of Wicked provided theatre-goers with many performances to enjoy.
Another successful production, Fiddler on the Roof, featured beloved actor Topol reprising his role as
“Tevye.” In addition, with performances of The Drowsy Chaperone, A Chorus Line and Riverdance,
patrons of The Orpheum Theatre were once again dazzled by the variety of productions on the corner of “Broadway on Beale.”
The Orpheum Theatre’s 2009 programming year was also packed with other entertainment options.
The grand stage featured comedians Robin Williams and Lewis Black; musical legends such as the
the Drifters and Jackson Browne; R&B show-stoppers Erykah Badu, India.Arie, R. Kelly, Ne-Yo, Jennifer Hudson and Robin Thicke; and rock acts Wilco, Eddie Vedder and Death Cab For Cutie. RAIN: A
Tribute to the Beatles, Celtic Woman and Menopause the Musical rounded out the year.
In addition, programs such as The International Blues Challenge, The Theatre’s Family Series, Orpheum Star Search, The Orpheum Summer Movie Series, Opera Memphis and Ballet Memphis collectively added as many as 50 performances on the stage.

2009 Development Revenue
Question:
If The Orpheum Theatre is usually operating at a deficit and operating expenses exceed gross ticket
sales, how does The Theatre continue to provide high-quality programming and somehow survive?
Answer:
Contributions and sponsorships from loyal and generous patrons, corporations, associations and
foundations enable The Theatre to continue to provide quality arts programming to the Mid-South.
In addition, fundraising events such as the annual auction, raffle, golf tournament and the occasional gala help The Theatre recoup enough to cover operating losses.
Special grants, which underwrite specific projects and programs as well as the Foundation’s investment income, also help offset losses. Fundraising and special events collectively amount to more
than $1.5 million dollars annually.

Proceeds from The Orpheum Theatre’s fundraising events enhance
programming, provide support to The Theatre’s education and
community programs, preserve and maintain The Theatre.
In 2009 The Orpheum launched a new program to raise money and awareness for the educational
programming offered at The Theatre. ArtReach: Putting Education Center Stage raised over $12,000
through donations made at Broadway performances and proceeds from items purchased in The
Theatre’s new online auction.
The Orpheum celebrated the long-awaited arrival of Wicked with a trip down the green carpet to A
“Wicked” Good Time on Saturday, June 27. One hundred guests joined the cast of the show at The
Majestic Grille for hors d’oeuvres and “Oz-Mopolitans,” all while raising over $13,000 for The Orpheum
Theatre’s mission-based programming.
A rainy week didn’t stop the golfers from coming out on Friday, September 25 for The Orpheum’s
eighth annual Ken Sossaman Memorial Golf Tournament at Cottonwoods Golf Course, hosted by
Harrah’s Tunica. The tournament was one of the most successful to date, netting over $60,000.
The Orpheum hosted its second annual Rock N Roll Brews & Q on Friday, October 9 at The Warehouse
in downtown Memphis’ South Main district. Over 400 people came out to celebrate the rock and roll
side of The Theatre, with music provided by The Earnestine and Hazel’s Band and John Paul Keith &
the One Four Fives. The event featured Corky’s BBQ and beer from Boscos and netted almost $8,000.
The 31st Annual Auction Gala, held on Saturday, November 14, featured a live, silent, and online auction and netted over $213,000. The evening included live entertainment and a buffet by favorite local restaurants and caterers. Guests enjoyed bidding on exciting items such as art, antiques, jewelry
and vacations while sipping their favorite cocktail. The evening’s theme was “Oh What A Night - A
Jersey Boys Experience.” Gold Sponsors for this memorable event were Armstrong Relocation and
Sedgwick CMS.
During the Auction Gala, The Orpheum held its annual Raffle for ArtReach. Jim Woolridge and Donna
Peer of Memphis, TN took home the grand prize - a 2009 Honda Fit. The raffle raised $20,000 for the
seventeen education and community programs provided by The Orpheum Theatre.
Education and Community Programming
While best known as home of Broadway theatre in
the Mid-South, The Orpheum takes great pride in
enriching the lives of children and families through
its Education and Community programming.
In 2009, The Orpheum impacted the lives of nearly 50,000 students and
families in the Tri-State area of Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas. It regularly serve Tennessee Congressional districts 7, 8 and 9 and Mississippi districts 1 and 2 - areas considered underserved by the National Endowment
for the Arts.
The Education and Community programs department delivered cultural
and artistic programming in three key areas: family and school performances, youth talent development and Broadway programs aimed to
enlighten and entertain younger audiences.

Friends of The Orpheum
The Orpheum Theatre could not acheive
the success that it has without the dedication of the Friends of The Orpheum (FOTO).
In 2009, almost 400 FOTO volunteers provided usher services for 225 events.
Twelve FOTO volunteers ushered 60 or
more events in 2009, led by Elaine Clyburn,
who ushered the most performances 136. Barbara Jackson ushered 121 events,
and Chris Olvey and Barbara Curtis ushered 78 events each.
