AUKESHA — Rosalie Smith
sports a crown atop her pixie
cut, lofty wedge heels and a
bright white sash. When she walks
down the streets of downtown Waukesha, heads turn. She’s Miss Wisconsin.
And while the 19-year-old seems to
wear her new title and handle the
attention with ease, Smith says she’s
much more excited for onlookers to
hear what she has to say.
“Once they know really what I’m
about, that’s what’s really exciting to
me,” she said.
A 2014 Waukesha North High School
graduate, Smith was crowned Miss
Wisconsin a week ago, which qualifies
her for a chance at Miss America in the
fall.
She’s new to the pageant scene, having competed in her first one, Miss
New Berlin, this spring.

A freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Smith hadn’t previously considered being in a pageant.
But one day, the New Berlin pageant
director, having seen Smith’s senior
pictures at a local photography studio,
called and asked her to join the competition. Smith said she agreed when she
realized the impact she could make.
“She told me then that I could choose
a platform of something that I believe
in,” Smith said. “So I instantly knew,

WAUKESHA — The U.S.
Supreme Court's decision
Friday to legalize same-sex
marriage in all 50 states has
people both locally and
nationally reflecting on the
measure's historical significance.
While it does not change
law in Wisconsin, where gay
and lesbian couples have
been able to wed since last
October, the 5-4 Supreme
Court ruling declared that
same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry
anywhere in the nation. Gay
marriage had been legal in
36 states up to this point.
Evan
Williams
of
Delafield, who entered a
domestic partnership with
his partner Chad Lantow
last year, praised the ruling.

WAUKESHA — The dispute over the

from hearing the news of
my Supreme Court’s decision in favor of same-sex
marriages,” he said. “The
Supreme Court’s decision
affects local families I know
who can now be recognized
legally as spouses and parents. My Supreme Court has
ruled that marriage equality
is law in my country regardless of the gender of those
entering into the commitment. “

Waukesha Masonic Lodge #37 filed a
lawsuit against the city last summer,
claiming the city violated the last will
and testament of former Mayor Henry
E. Blair. When Blair died in 1957, he left
the 138-year-old Italianate-style brick
home to the city, saying in his will that
the city couldn’t use it for commercial
purposes, storage, a tool shed or warehouse. He also said in the will that the
city could sell the property, but it had to
