It’s a funny thing being an editor, in that a certain demographic know who you are and yet they don’t know you at all; they know only what you do for a living. Something, in the case of editing a magazine, that’s writ largely across these monthly pages. Plus, I’m lucky enough to be able to bang on about something/anything that particularly tickles me on this page every issue, too. I’m happy for this side of myself to be revealed. I’m immensely proud of what the team and I achieve here at Close Up HQ. I’ve always thought that a good magazine – and hopefully you will count Close Up as one – should feel like a friend, and like all best friends, share ideas and pleasures together. Our office is like a madhouse at the moment. We are gearing up as we do around this time for our next couple of editions that will see us through to the end of the year. There are always a few good constructive discussions as to what is going to make the cut, be it an interview or a cover star. Makes me remember why I like this job so much… When ideas started percolating for this edition never did I guess we would wind up here. But I couldn’t be more thrilled. Close Up was born as a magazine with an inspiration to help you make the most of life and we are proud to say we have blossomed and that our popularity is growing day by day with a very impressive readership across the UK and online. As well as the fastest up to the minute news and our encyclopaedic coverage of the fashion, beauty and the celebrity world we adore running our articles to complement the fantastic picture galleries and short stories that are already so popular. Our aim has always been to present to you, our readers, a creative mix of content straight to your doorstep. Thank you to everyone, readers, collaborators, advertisers and my spectacular team. All have made this magazine something to be proud of. Not forgetting our work experience placements who certainly remind us how good it was to be so young! I would love to know what you think of this issue and which articles you enjoy the most. I believe it sets a great tone for our next issue and beyond. Have a great month! Andrea x COMPETITIONS of the month This month we have brought to you some of the most exclusive competitions! CHOICE WHAT A LOVELY GIFT TO HAVE Buy your Brent Cross gift card today at brentcross.co.uk FILM INTERVIEW ROONEY Mara The “Carol” star talks about mixing blockbusters and dramas, as well as being nude on film! While her sister Kate was all over the multiplexes this summer with “Fantastic 4”, actress Rooney Mara has had a mixture of high profile blockbusters and tense low budget movies this year. Last month she was seen opposite Garrett Hedlund and Hugh Jackman in the big budget spectacular “Pan”, this month she stars in a very different film, the drama “Carol”. Set in the 1950’s, the 30-year-old plays Therese, who is drawn into a dangerous relationship with a married woman (played by Cate Blanchett). Having appeared in high profile films like “Pan” and “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, most would assume that the actress changes her approach for the much quieter, thoughtful award hopeful like “Carol”. However, the opposite is the truth. “I don’t know if I make a distinction between those two” Mara remarks at a press conference. “I think in everything I do I always try to find the more quiet moments, I think that’s where a lot of the story is told, when there’s just silence or space between the words. I mean, certainly this film had a lot more of that, but I try and find that in anything I do.” “I’M NUDE QUITE OFTEN, SO IT WASN’T A BIG DEAL FOR ME!” The film has sparked controversy over its depiction of a lesbian romance, something that Mara believes is indicative of how far the LGBT+ rights movement has to go. “Certainly in my country, America, where the film takes place, there’s been great progress made from when this film takes place” she says, before adding “but I think we’d be foolish to think that it ends there, I mean, that’s the case everywhere in the world and we still have a lot of headway to make, there’s still a long way to go before we’re not talking about it.” Looking to the future, Mara seems to be sticking with darker roles that have built her reputation as one of the most interesting actresses around. She’s currently filming “The Secret Scripture”, an adaptation of a novel set in a psychiatric hospital, co-starring Vanessa Redgrave. Amid all the controversy, there was one final big question about “Carol”- what was it like being nude on camera in a sex scene with Blanchett? “I’m nude quite often, so it wasn’t a big deal for me!” She says with a shrug. “It was nice, I don’t know…” “Carol” is released 27th November and is reviewed in this issue. 12 WISHlist Close Up’s monthly guide to what you should be wishing for… MODERN LUXE FINGER LICKING GOOD Established in 1982, The Chicago Rib Shack offers a delicious menu of burgers, lip-smacking ribs, succulent chicken and infamous applewood chips. He might be rehearsing for seven hours a day but he still managed to squeeze in some time to talk to us here at Close Up. We caught up with the busy star, and had a chat about married life to the gorgeous Emily, family and how he is dancing his way through Strictly hailing him as favourite to lift this year’s Glitterball. 16 Image Credit: CAN Associates 17 Image Credit: CAN Associates Pete, you have been great on Strictly. How has training been going? Emily was too nervous to watch the first show live – has she started watching it? The show is so much harder than people think, learning ballroom was so tough and it is a whole new world for me. For the first routine [Cha Cha Cha] I had three weeks to learn the routine, but now that the show is in full swing I only have four days to learn a new routine at the most. The quickstep was such a difficult dance to learn as there were a lot of elements to it, so I went into it expecting a low score from the judges. I was so grateful that we managed to get 30 points. She watched the quickstep live. I think she enjoyed watching me, but she says she finds it terrifying. You’ve had a brilliant first few weeks on Strictly! Who do you think is your biggest competition on the show? Thank you. The first week was so important to me. I am glad I gave it my all. I was absolutely elated when the first show went so well. I was actually quite emotional. There will be weeks when I don’t know the dances as well but I feel like I can really put the passion into the Latin routines. I just want to remain focused and I want to enjoy every minute of it. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would do so well. The standard this year is so high! Helen (George) is an amazing dancer, I really think she could take the crown. What is funny is that Aljaz is partnered with her! Obviously Jay is amazing too. Then again someone like Jeremy or Ainsley could take it. Do you get upset when you receive negative comments from Craig Revel Horwood? No, not at all. I was expecting it. If I make mistakes I’m glad the judges pick up on it because constructive criticism is the only way I’m going to get better. How do you feel right before you perform? Do you feel the pressure more now you are favourite to win? It is very kind of people to say but at the same time you think gosh, what if I let them down? Imagine how devastated you would feel if you are not the favourite anymore. Also, it will change week by week contestant by contestant. How do you feel about wearing the outfits on the show? “emily watched the quicksteP liVe. i think she enjoyed watching me, but still finds it terrifying.” I am so nervous. All the contestants are so supportive of each other though. They are all such lovely people and I have developed good friendships with them. However, I would put Strictly up there with one of the most nerve-wracking things I have ever done as it is out of my comfort zone! Why has it taken you until Series 13 to sign on the dotted line? Work commitments mainly but also I have just been too nervous, it is a big reason, I was scared. One slip up is all it takes. You can rehearse, rehearse, and rehearse but on the night… Bless! How is Janette as a teacher? Janette is the greatest teacher! She is absolutely awesome. She is tough, but in a kind way. She is always telling me to practice again and again. Her fiancée Aljaz is lovely too, such a nice guy and I hang around with him on set loads! Has Emily been supportive of you joining Strictly? Emily has proved to be nothing more than supportive of my decision to join the Strictly team. Em’s is so sensible, all round. Em’s knows me and knows that when I am on stage I have a job to do and just switch on. I have got to give my all and Em’s has said to me “Go and do your thing, do it and do it well”. She really is the most understanding, wonderful person I have ever met and I would never take her for granted. Oh it is all fun. On the first show I had to wear 1920’s high-waisted trousers. Junior took great pleasure in making fun of me. Do the children enjoy watching you on the show? They love it. Unfortunately they are not allowed in the Strictly audience (children aged 14 or under can’t be in the Strictly studio) but they can come and sit and watch it in the Green Room. They enjoy it in there as there is always plenty of chocolate! They have also come to rehearsals with Em’s and Amelia. It is very funny they will be doing the Waltz in the background together whilst Janette and I practice. Amelia is so cute, if you ask her what daddy is doing at work she says “dancing, dancing!” It has been three months since you married, how has married life changed you? It is exactly the same! I am so happy we married this year – we can now plan our next child. I was always so happy with just the two, but now that I have Amelia (now 20 months), who I am absolutely crazy about, I have told Em’s that I am ready for one or two more. We have been so lucky with Amelia, she sleeps through and is so well behaved. You have a new album out. Tell us about it… The album is called Come Fly With Me. It is celebrating 100 years since Frank Sinatra was born. I get to cover the likes of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ ‘Jack the Knife’ but it is not just covers, though, there are four original songs on there too. It is a worldwide deal and i loved recording it. There is also something for my dad on the album – a swing version of Mysterious Girl called Mysterious Swing which has the backing of a 30 piece orchestra. My dad was never the biggest fan of the original even though he was proud and was always asking me when i am going to wear a suit and tie, so dad this is for you! We have also announced the tour, I’ll be playing the 02 arena on the 20th March, I am so excited. 19 Did you feel any pressure taking on the songs of such a well-loved singer? No, this is me paying homeage to him, not trying to be like him. No one is ever going to be like Frank in the same way, no one’s ever going to be able to imitate Dean Martin or any other greats. Image Credit: CAN Associates Some celebrities lay on the modesty thick but not our Pete. He is the master of positivity and is grateful for every opportunity that comes his way. Competing in Strictly, we can only imagine is crazy chaotic, plus his New York Coffee shops and pop-ups, calendars and fragrances – there is just so much going on. However at the heart of his existence is his number one job, being a great husband and dad! Ollie, welcome back to Chelsea, are you looking forward to being back on The Kings Road? I can’t wait to be back on The Kings Road adding some more love, laughs and just a bit of the ridiculous! Is there lots of new drama for the Chelsea set? I am loving it all so much. Series 10 is quite simply amazing and I can confirm lots of drama and mischief from faces old and new! Oh and always be ready for a flirtation! Old and new? Oooooh yes I can reveal that my good friend Richard Dinan will be returning to the show, how marvellous is that? You’re supporting Binky Felstead after all the drama… Binky had these guys messing her around and I thought ‘They can’t do that! I need to stick up for my girl!’ I will always be protective of her. Have you tried to stay out of drama this time? I’m very much as the centre of everything. The show is back to how it used to be, with a balance between comedy and drama. You are obviously a lover of looking after yourself. What does being well groomed mean to you? Many men seem to avoid the subject of being well groomed, in my eyes it’s terribly important to look good and make the best of what you have. Thankfully men are starting to realise that with some concealer and fake tan they can instantly look better looking, so why is every man not doing this? Do you think that being in the public eye makes you more aware you need to look good? To be honest ever since I was young, my mother always said I should never go out the house looking anything less than wonderful, as I never know who I might bump into. Being in the public eye you have to remember what clothing you have been wearing, and it’s also good to have a make up bag handy, particularly after a big night. Do you buy products yourself? I do, I have never been given any make up and take regular trips to Mac on The Kings Road. Who in the public eye do you think is well groomed/ gets it right? Zac Efron always looks pretty good, I’ve never seen him look awful, he always looks very cool.. Who is the vainest on the show? Without a doubt Jamie! He takes forever styling that hair! What else have you been up to? I’ve got a new book coming out next year. It’s fabulous! It’s taken me seven years to write and I’m really really proud of it. It’s my baby. 26 Made in Chelsea Mondays at 10pm on E4 We’ve said it before and we will say it again… Good to have you back Ollie! Roll on Series 10… 24 Cannon Hill Southgate London N14 6LG T: 020 8882 8002 E: info@iamleisurewear.com IAmLeisurewear @Iamleisurewear Iamleisurewear INTERVIEW ADDING TO the empire Interview by Leah Shakallis After announcing her pregnancy in August, Sam Faiers has been enjoying taking things easy. Close Up caught up with Sam to find out how she is coping in the run up to her due date, plus, she spills the beans on her beauty secrets. Hi Sam, how are you? How is your pregnancy coming along? Has it been smooth for you? of trips to and from Manchester to make sure that I’m across all the meetings, it’s really important to me to be really involved. I’m good thank you! I’ve been absolutely fine, things have been running very smoothly for me, everyone says to me that I’m really lucky. Can you tell us a little bit about your upcoming fake tan product? Do you worry about your image a lot more now? Not necessarily, I’m just going to embrace it and take each day as it comes with fashion and how I look. I haven’t had any sickness or mood swings so I feel great. In terms of keeping up with my regimes and what I wear, so far it’s been ok. Have you been sticking to lots of exercise? Obviously I don’t exercise half as much as I did before because I had the training website every day and a healthy routine but I have cut down on that a lot now and I’ve been doing some classes like yoga and pilates, so I’m still keeping myself fit and active but not anything too extreme. Of course! So, it’s called ‘Glow’ and obviously being a fellow Essex girl, I’ve had some really bad fake tan experiences in the past as you can imagine. I know there is huge competition out there with fake tan products and I wanted to stand out and make a difference. When making the fake tan it was really important to me that it be a premium product, I want people to try it, love it and then buy it again. There is a mixture of different types to suit every one and their budgets, gradual tans, instant tans, boosts, moisturisers, exfoliators and more. The tan also has an aroma garden in it so it masks that fake tan smell that we all hate. But again, packaging was really important, I want people to feel like it’s a luxurious product and that when you are buying it, it feels like you’re buying yourself a gift, something that looks nice on your dressing table, it’s an all rose gold bottle. I’m really excited to launch it now! “I’M JUST GOING TO EMBRACE IT – I HAVEN’T HAD ANY SICKNESS OR MOOD SWINGS” You’ve had such a great year, fragrances, lashes, the tan launch and a second Minnie’s Store! Will you be back to business once the baby is here? Yes! We originally had a pop-up store and then it took off and done really well and it’s still open at the moment, it’s not the same as our flagship store in Brentwood, Essex. I’m going to play it by ear and take each day as it comes because I don’t know how I’m going to feel once the baby is here, so as soon as I’m feeling ready to go back out there and work again I will but I’m not going to give myself a time limit. ‘Pure’ is your second fragrance in the ‘By Samantha’ range, would you say it’s similar to your first perfume ‘La Bella’? Are you planning on a return to TV? No, I wanted it to be part of the same family, but with a different vibe and scent so in terms of the smell it’s very fresh and it’s a fragrance you can wear in the day time opposed to a night time perfume. It’s very fruity and zesty. Whereas ‘La Bella’ was a bit more daytime – night and a bit more musky. How involved were you in the process? Pure is available now at The Fragrance Shop in-store and online at thefragranceshop.co.uk Glow is available at selected high street retailers from early October ITV Pictures With all my products in my brand, I cross everything. From the first meeting, design, planning, photoshoots and the scent itself, I will cross everything. The offices are in Manchester so I’ve been making loads TV is definitely on the horizon, I’m not quite sure what angle yet or what I’m going to be doing but next year getting on to TV is something that I definitely want to do. Obviously being a mum and working I haven’t yet worked out what it is I’m going to do or how I’m going to do it but TV is definitely something I’m looking into. 28 BEAUTY NOTES Tom Ford AW15 bareMinerals Ready 2.0 Top Shelf in Flicker £20 Chanel Creation Exlusive Signe Particulier £44 Illamasqua Celestial Palette £34 Chanel Rouge Allure in Vaporeuse £26 Chanel Le Vernis in Rose Fusion £18 SHINE on It’s that time of the year again! My hair is of the curly, unruly and dry and rebellious school. Coupled with that, I certainly haven’t made life easy for my hair. Years of colouring, bleaching, blow-drying and indeed hot ironing over the years have left my hair puffy, parched and frizzy. The treatment took approximately 2.5 hours from beginning to end, which was explained to me, could vary depending on the length, thickness and texture of the hair. I was led to the wash basin with chairs that recline fully for a total relaxing experience, I have to say it was pamper perfect and the most relaxing 2.5 hours I have had in a very long time. So when I heard about a new miracle treatment called The INOAR Keratin Treatment that promised to solve these problems and more, I was certainly intrigued. The INOAR Keratin Treatment is a semi permanent treatment that naturally straightens hair using Keratin, a substance which is naturally found in the hair, leaving the hair smooth, locking in moisture and removing the need to spend hours battling with hairdryers, tongs and irons. The most amazing thing about this treatment is that it actually improves the condition of your hair as it straightens it and actually works better on hair that is damaged, dyed or bleached, as opposed to most other treatments, which can’t be used on hair that is damaged or that has been recently dyed. Sound too good to be true? Well when I was invited by Des Ioannou at Saks Crouch End to sample this treatment, I jumped at the chance and what better time to trial this wonder treatment than before a holiday in Cyprus, where I would be engaging in many activities that would normally ravage my hair, namely swimming, sunbathing then using my much loved beloved irons to attempt to smooth my hair in the evening. On leaving the salon, I now possessed the perfectly fresh salon hair I had always wished for. I was keen however to put the treatment to the real test and to determine whether or not I could leave my hair straighteners at home for the first time since I can remember. I was certainly not disappointed with the results. After washing my hair for the first time my hair dried to a very smooth, slightly tousled effect. Something I would have struggled to achieve before, even with my arsenal of power tools. Girls! What are you waiting for? This truly is the next best thing when it comes to beautiful hair. Making her breakthrough in the late ‘90s with “Elizabeth”, she’s gone on to star in critically adored fare such as “Blue Valentine” as well as big budget crowd pleasers such as “Robin Hood” and “The Aviator”. However, despite such a great track record, it appears she’s just getting started! Her new film, “Carol”, is another critical hit adored in Cannes and rumoured to be another Oscar contender for the 46-year-old. Based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, Blanchett plays the title role of a married woman in the 1950’s who has an affair with a younger woman (played by Rooney Mara). It’s always difficult turning a complicated movie into a film, but the award-winner felt very grateful that much of the work was already done for her. “I think the challenge that’s involved in playing a character from a Patricia Highsmith novel is that they are so mysterious and ambiguous” she explains at a press conference. “(The script) created a whole world for Carol, and that was a gift, so I had the elusive atmosphere of the novel, and then I had the beautifully chosen words that had been chosen for Carol, so it was a gift.” me old fashioned but I thought one’s job as an actor was not to present one’s boring, small, microscopic universe but to make a psychological connection to another character’s experiences. My own life is of no interest to anyone else. Or maybe it is. But I certainly have no interest in putting my own thoughts and opinions out there.” Indeed, she sees some parallels with her character’s situation in the film and with the focus on celebrity culture in the real world. “(Carol’s) sexuality is a private affair” she explains. “What often happens these days is if you are homosexual you have to talk about it constantly, the only thing, before your work. We’re living in a deeply conservative time.” “tHeSe DAYS, IF YOU Are HOMOSeXUAL YOU HAve tO tALK ABOUt It COnStAntLY, we’re LIvInG In A DeePLY COnServAtIve tIMe” Sexuality is a key theme of what the film is about, particularly the oppressive attitudes towards gay and lesbian relationships in that period. “Carol was not a card-carrying member of any sexual persuasion” Blanchett explains. “That’s also important to remember: those labels, those groups, the comfort of them, didn’t exist then. The resultant isolation was very important.” While things have improved, the star acknowledges that there are many problems surrounding LGBT+ rights in the modern world. “There’s still over 70 countries around the world where Homosexuality is still illegal, so we’re talking about it, but it still seems to be an issue.” Much has been made of Blanchett’s own sexuality in the promotion for this film, with a misquoted line in a magazine interview implying that the actress was bisexual. While she has refuted this, she doesn’t see the relevance in such questions. “In 2015, the point should be: who cares?” she remarks. “Call Another issue the film almost inadvertently addresses is equality in films. 2015 has been a huge year for female-led movies, with films like “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Pitch Perfect” and “The Hunger Games” proving women are as much of a box office draw as men. Still, “Carol” stands out in that it is a film where two women are at the forefront, something that happens far too infrequently. “I think it certainly needs to be front and centre of the conversation” Blanchett says when asked about gender equality in film. “There was an article in The International New York Times that says it’s The Year of ‘La Femme’! You hope it’s not (just) the year, some sort of fashionable moment! The more rich and diverse stories are, the better it serves audiences both male and female.” The actress concludes that, while the current situation is discouraging, films such as “Carol” highlight the slow but noticeable change in an often gender-biased industry. “The wonderful thing about this book, and I think Patricia Highsmith’s writing in general, is that you have both male and female perspectives melded and meshed. Yes, there’s two women at the centre of it, but it’s not a niche experience. So, yes, I think it’s important to keep talking about it, I think it sort of ‘fell off’ the agenda, and I think we lost a lot of ground. But it’s wonderful to work with female producers who want to make intelligent, entertaining films. That’s what everyone wants to make, isn’t it?” “Carol” is released 27th November and is reviewed in this issue. 47 PitterPatter Baby Shower is a unique company here to make mummy to be, feel extra special. Some people come for the skiing and the sunshine (the resorts boasts 322 days a year) but others never set foot on a piste. There are plenty of designer stores to amuse the ladies who lunch, while others come to watch the annual polo, horse racing and cricket competition on the towns frozen lake. Where should I stay? Survetta house, a fairy castle-style hotel complete with turrets, is just 2km outside the main resort and is certainly no ordinary ski hotel but a lavish, luxury destination 62 in its own right. Many guests come here to enjoy its superb spa, gourmet dining establishments and miniature ice skating rink. Stay in one of the elegant rooms and you will enjoy breathtaking views of the mountainous scenery from the window. For skiers, the 188-room hotel is a delight as it has its own ski suits and gloves and ski guide Gian confessed to teaching princess Caroline of Monaco when she last stayed. At Christmas, the Suvretta is very much a family affair and the exquisitely decorated Christmas trees, roaring fires and hot Gluhwein (mulled wine) are bound to get you in the festive mood. Where should I ski? The Olympic downhill slopes and crosscountry skiing tracks are world famous, having played host to two winter Olympics. There are four large contrasting ski areas. – Corviglia/ Piz Nair, Corvatsch/ Furtschellas, Diavolezza/ Lagalb and Zuoz – offering 350km of piste and 35 mountain restaurants. Where can I shop? Via Serlas is to St Moritz what Rodeo Drive is to Beverly Hills. Here, you’ll find Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Vercase, Prada and Roberto Cavalli so you’ll have no excuse for not being suitably attired. For ski gear, there’s Jetset or Ender sport and if you’re hinting for a marriage proposal, you’ll be spoilt for choice with Asprey, Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, Chopard and Bulgari within a stones throw of each other. Don’t forget to check out the watches – it is Switzerland after all. travel What can non-skiers do? If you want to hobnob with the stars (George Clooney has attended!), visit during the polo world cup on snow (January 30th – February 2nd), when the world’s best players compete on the resort’s frozen lake. Other draws include the white-turf horse races on Sundays in February, the Swiss bobsleigh championships and the St Moritz Gourmet Festival. If pampering is more your scene, head for the Suvretta’s outdoor hot-tub, where you can touch the snow while unwinding in water of 36 degrees. What celebrities might I see? Supermodel Claudia Schiffer and her family like to come during the festive period, while Lord Freddie Windsor and his actress wife Sophie Winklemen have holidayed here too. Robbie Williams and Tina Turner have stayed at the swanky Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, which has a winter outpost of London’s famed Nobu restaurant. Model mum Elizabeth Hurley and her family are a familiar sight. Boris Becker married his model love Lily Kerssenberg on a tiny hilltop above St Moritz, followed by a lavish reception at Badrutt’s Palace. Where is the nightlife? If you want to rub shoulders with Robert de Niro or gorgeous George, the legendary Moroccan themed King club, within Badrutt’s Palace, is still the place to be seen. Be warned, though, a bottle of beer can cost about £20, the vodka only comes by the bottle and the champagne costs as much as a car! Dracula is another popular venue, while the après-ski Roo bar and Vivai club appeals to a younger crowd. “DeCOrateD CHrIStMaS treeS, rOarING FIreS aND HOt MUlleD WINe are BOUND tO Get YOU IN tHe FeStIve MOOD” Where can I eat? No trip to St Moritz would be complete without a visit to the traditional Hanselmann tea room, which sells more than 60 types of chocolate and an amazing array of calorific pastries. Up the mountain, if you’re looking for a lunch spot with fabulous views, try Trutz or Chasellas. La Marmite in Corviglia is the ultra sophisticated choice – think champagne, caviar and truffles. If you’re staying at the Survretta, dress up to the nines (black tie is a must) and, after sipping a Bellini at Anton’s, head for the grand restaurant (with carved oak ceilings and panelled walls) to savour delights such as veal on pomerry mustard foam with crispy potato fritters, and espresso ice-cream with chipped chocolate. Alternatively, you can enjoy mushroom-crusted beef fillet, and cappuccino crème brûlée at the hotel’s rustic Stube restaurant. How do I get there? Room rates at the Suvretta hotel, a member of the leading Hotels of the world, start from £230. This includes lunch or dinner, services, taxes, VAT, use of indoor pool and spa and free bus transfers to downtown St Moritz. Visit the website for special packages. Enjoy! BrOOKLYN (6th Nov) Soairse Ronan plays a young Irish immigrant torn between her new home of 1950’s Brooklyn and her roots in Ireland, thanks to blossoming romances on both sides of the Atlantic. Superbly told, this story is in every sense a tearjerker. The script will speak to anyone who’s ever been in love, while the story of a woman faced with an impossible choice is romance told in the best way. Likely to be a huge hit with anyone with a pulse, this has to be one of the films of the year. ★★★★★ BUrNT (6th Nov) Bradley Cooper started the year as a grizzled marine in “American Sniper”, and ends it in this drama about a chef whose wild lifestyle leads him to lose his celebrated restaurant. With his reputation in ruins, he sets about rebuilding his career and his life. Putting a lot into the part, Cooper raises a story that never really grabs you like his most recent films, but it does benefit from some reliable supporting stars such as Uma Thurman and Cooper’s “Sniper” co-star Sienna Miller, playing a fellow chef and love interest. ★★★☆☆ THe rUNNer (6th Nov) Nicholas Cage takes on the BP oil spill, playing an idealistic senator whose past indiscretions threaten his career, and his campaign to hold oil companies to account. A film with good intensions gets bogged down in melodrama, as Cage and the rest of the cast struggle on valiantly to tell a very thin story that doesn’t quite capture the seriousness of the real life scandal. Given Cage’s patchy track record, this is far from the worst of his recent efforts. It is, however, also far from his best. ★★☆☆☆ 66 THe HALLOw (13th Nov) Gripping horror set in Ireland, where a conservationist from London and his family disturb dark forces when they enter a wood with some supernatural secrets. Slow to get going, “The Hallow” ultimately has a lot more to it than most Hollywood movies of this type. Revealing its scariest moments at just the right time, it’s a low budget film that could teach the big studios a thing or two about genuine chills. ★★★☆☆ FILM revIew Also out this month… THe LADY IN THe vAN (13th Nov) An adaptation of the hit play by Alan Bennett about the true story of the famous writer’s friendship with an older woman who lived in a van in his back garden for 15 years. Dame Maggie Smith (“Downton Abbey”, “Harry Potter”) plays the title role, in a film that will have you rolling in the aisles thanks to a typically wonderful performance from Smith. It may miss the odd note when things get dramatic, but this is an adaptation that will do Bennett and his legions of fans proud. ★★★★☆ STeve JOBS BLACK MASS It’s only four years since the untimely and sad death of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs, and yet here we have the second film about his life, as told by director Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire”) and writer Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing”, “The Social Network”). Set at three key points in his life, Michael Fassbender plays Jobs, preparing to unveil three of the most important inventions in his career and battling with colleagues, ex-girlfriends and the press in his pursuit of perfection. Despite being over dramatized and Fassbender looking nothing like Jobs, it’s a compelling portrayal of the mind behind the inventions that changed the world. The life and times of real life notorious Boston criminal Jimmy “Whitey” Bulger, who used an alliance with the FBI to become one of the most notorious crime bosses in American history. Bulger is portrayed by Johnny Depp (under a tonne of makeup), who takes the lead alongside an all-star cast which includes Joel Edgerton, Dakota Johnson and Benedict Cumberbatch. A slick crime drama excellently told with arguably Depp’s most challenging performance in years. If you love movies like “Goodfellas”, you’re going to love this! (13th Nov) ★★★★☆ (27th Nov) ★★★★☆ CArOL (27th Nov) An Oscar tipped drama about a young New Yorker in the 1950’s (Rooney Mara) who enters into a dangerous affair with a rich, married older woman (Cate Blanchett). A superb drama that will speak to everyone regardless of gender or sexual orientation, while issues of homophobia are raised this is first and foremost a love story, and an incredibly moving one at that. Blanchett and Mara are fantastic together, creating an on-screen relationship that doesn’t offer any easy answers. A heart breaking story that has awards written all over it. ★★★★★ Agree? Disagree? One of the most enduring hits of 2015 (a year filled with big movies) was Pixar’s “Inside Out”, the story of a young girl who’s various emotions (Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust) try to keep her stable when her family moves to a new town. Award-winning comedian Amy Poehler takes the lead as the voice of Joy, providing the actress with her first big screen hit after years of success with series “Parks and Recreation”. A vocal campaigner for gender equality, Poehler was understandably delighted when presented with the premise of the film. “I couldn’t believe the setting was the mind of an 11-year-old girl. I just loved that that was the setting” she says at a press conference for the film. “From the minute they told me the idea I was like, ‘This is the best movie ever made, and it will be the only good movie I’ve ever been in and I can’t believe I’m in it!!’” “THIS IS THE BEST MOVIE EVER MADE, AND IT WILL BE ONLY GOOD MOVIE I’VE EVER BEEN IN!” As well as loving the film, she felt a connection and admiration for her own character. “Well, I think there are some characteristics of Joy, like just maybe some unrelenting energy and bossiness perhaps that (the filmmakers) thought I could pull off, maybe from the other characters that I’ve played” she explains. “I do think she just likes living in the moment and I maybe like to think that I do that too”. It’s also one of the first family films to deal seriously with mental health, and the star believes the serious message is a vital part of the film’s success. “It’s always a nice reminder that sadness can be your friend, that it can help you” she says. “It makes you think about what you’re thinking and it also reminds you that you never know what anybody’s thinking or going through or feeling. The way someone is acting often isn’t the way they’re feeling. And that’s a good reminder (to have) as a human person in the world.” Finally, now that she’s voiced her own Disney classic character, are there any others that she enjoyed as a child? “I loved Cruella De Vil” she says with a grin. “She’s a funny character. A meaty character part for a woman. May we all get to our Cruella De Vil stage!” “Inside Out” is released on home video November 23rd. 68 M UR ORE GE P NT RO LY PE R E RT I QU ES IRE D Selling or Letting?
