Better Communications, Farther Reach Andrew Solomon Marcy Bowers Lisa Danielson Heather Noonan League of American Orchestras Power of Personal Narratives “Music has given me a different perspective on how I view myself and the world around me. YOLA has shaped me to be a better leader, role model, and made me realize I could be a part of something greater in life.” Raymond Chaves, Age 15, Clarinetist Youth Orchestra LA (YOLA), a project of the LA Philharmonic First Hand Experience Third Party Endorsements Gogerty Marriot Talk About Me • If you want me to listen to you, talk about me, not about you. • Conditioning the environment • Values intersection Be Strategic, Make a Plan 1. Resources: who brings what o a budget is a strategy expressed in dollars and time 2. Timing is everything o Know when decision-makers are making up their minds – and also know when they will be deaf to you 3. Not everyone will see it your way o Knowing your opponents’ strengths and weaknesses is important - don’t focus on what they will do, but what they could do 4. KISS - Keep It Simple, Silly o The fewer moving parts means there is less chance for any one of them to break down 5. No plan survives the first battle o No plan can be so rigid that it cannot accommodate change. Because change is inevitable VERMONT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: VENDORS The Vermont Symphony Orchestra worked with 258 vendors in 25 states and Canada between 2010-2012.
