Goldey-Beacom College Summer 2001 REFLECTIONS News for Alumni and the Greater College Community Governor Minner tells graduates to cherish college experience On April 27, 2001, 322 GBC graduates were welcomed into the MBNA America Hall for commencement ceremonies. They received recognition for their academic achievements and well wishes for the challenges they’ll face outside the College. Keynote speaker, Governor Ruth Ann Minner, shared her memory of leaving high school at the age of 16 to help financially support her parents and siblings and later, at the age of 32, earning her GED. She continued by telling the graduates to take great pride in their accomplishments and to cherish the memories of that evening. She added, “This is not the end of your life’s accomplishments—it is one of a string of cherished memories.” Governor Minner continued by encouraging the graduates to be of service to others. She stated, “You have an opportunity to move our country forward into the new millennium. As you move forward in your career, remember the people who helped you. It is your responsibility now to reach out and help someone else achieve.” She concluded her address with her vision for the graduates to have a good life that included a great career and wonderful family life. During the ceremonies, Governor Minner was presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration degree. The day’s events also included the presentation of the Excellence in Teaching award which was given to Professor Susan Stranix. Congratulations again to this year’s graduating class.
