No Registration Required
Music Appreciation - The History and Sound
of the Pedal Steel Guitar
Thursday, September 22
2:00 pm
Instructor: Pete Finney
The pedal steel guitar, an instrument associated with
country music, has early Hawaiian roots, but has
changed over the years and been absorbed into different
music styles. In this lecture you will learn about and
hear demonstrations that illustrate how it has moved
from Hawaiian, to country, and beyond. Mr. Finney will
also demonstrate the ways the pedal steel guitar is
utilized in other styles
and will gladly
entertain any
questions you might
have throughout.
5
Visits in the Holy Land
Tuesdays - October 4, 11, 18, 25
7 pm
Instructor: Dr. Paul Teschan
Dr. Teschan describes the lectures as follows: “Four
visits with folks in Jordan and around Israel (in 2007,
2008, 2011 and 2013) helped us begin to learn what it’s
like to live there as individual human beings. The
experiences I will share aren’t like the messages from
our media that mainly concern issues of geopolitics.
Instead, you will meet some extraordinary ordinary
folks, some of whom have become friends, who said
some things we wanted to share with our other friends.
How? By videotaping our conversations with themwhich we did in 2013. These four presentations,
including video footage, will let you see and hear them
talk to us.”
6
Hip Hop Is the Music of Defiance
Thursday, October 27
7 pm
Instructor: Dr. Virginia Lamothe
“I said a hip, hop, the hippy to the hippy to the hip hip
hop, you don't stop. . . ” Hip Hop culture is a way of life
as well as a genre of music. Dr. Lamothe will shed light
on the history of Hip Hop and how understanding of
this culture is crucial to interacting with our
multicultural community here in the United States, as
well as how its history has been hidden or re-interpreted
for us by the media. The more we understand about the
current world around us the more we will become a
more socially-conscious and empathetic people.

Letters of John & Abigail Adams
Thursday, November 10th
7 pm
Instructor: Dr. Dennis and Shirley Lloyd
Personal letters between notable people are always
fascinating, but those between a husband and wife who
later became president and first lady and who figured so
prominently in the birth of this nation are more than
fascinating; they are historical. John and Abigail Adams
were devoted to each other and to the American
Revolution. Because they were separated for extensive
periods of time when he was in Philadelphia and later
abroad, only letters allowed them to stay in touch. Their
voices sound clearly in the words they wrote and the
love they expressed.

The Gift of Planning- Advance Health Care
Directives
Tuesday, November 15
10:30 am
Instructor: Kate Payne, JD, RN, NC-BC
Thinking about your end of life choices today can
improve your quality of life in the future and ease the
burden on your family. Discussing your wishes with
loved ones and preparing an Advance Health Care
Directive offers the best assurance that decisions
regarding your future medical care will reflect your own
values and wishes. Preparation and communication of
your wishes is also one of the best gifts that you can give
your loved ones.
Ms. Payne is
a Clinical
Ethicist with
the Center for
Biomedical
Ethics and
Society, and
Associate
Professor of
Nursing at
Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She will guide
you through these difficult topics in a way that you will
clearly understand. Even if you have already prepared
these documents this session will offer helpful
reminders to ensure you have thoroughly prepared for
the future.

The Basics of Aromatherapy and Essential Oils
in Health and Healing
Thursday, October 13
11 am
Fee: $10
Limited to 15 participants
Instructor: TI Bishop
Uplifting, protective, calming and regenerating,
essential oils are a unique gift from the natural
world. They are often referred to as “nature’s living
energy” and are the very essence of a plant. They are
aromatic liquids derived from shrubs, flowers, trees,
roots and seeds. They determine the plant’s aroma and
are vital for
plants to
grow, live,
evolve and
adapt, helping
them defend
themselves
from hostile
environmental
conditions
and disease.
In this class Ms. Bishop will discuss practical uses for
several oils. You will have the opportunity to smell them
and learn how to use them in the home and on the body
for better health.
