Our theological word for this issue is “Sovereignty.” If you hang around
me for an extended period of time, you know how often I assert that “God is
God, and we’re not” (often followed by a sincere Thank God!). I love how
“Crazy Talk” deals with God’s sovereignty. First the definition:
Sovereignty- “The royal idea that we are not, in fact, our own kings
and queens.”
Reflection- Perhaps the vilest poem in the entire English language in
“Invictus,” by William Ernest Hensley, which ends, “I am the master of my fate:
I am captain of my soul.” (Vomit here. Then continue reading.)
If that were true, we would all sail our soul-ships right on to the rocks of despair, death and destruction. And although Guns ‘n’ Roses may disagree, we
have no appetite for those things.
As Christians, we recognize Another as the captain of our souls, as the
master of our fates. Thanks be to God! There is one greater than we are, who
is able to conquer death, forgive sins, give hope, and turn mourning into dancing. This idea is known as the sovereignty of God—the idea that God is in
charge.
But the idea that God is in charge is strange, because God’s inchargeness
is always balanced by God’s faithfulness. God is powerful and holds ultimate
authority, but at the core of God’s sovereignty are grace, love, and faithfulness—not absolute power. In fact, God’s power comes through weakness,
which we see most clearly on the cross. With that power, God works for the
good of all people. God even shares God’s power with human beings so that
we can be agents of God’s love and missions in this world.
The utter and absolute sovereignty of God is a reign we humans have
never been wholly comfortable with. Most of us would prefer a more democratic
system of rule one in which we could actively vote for the outcome of events or
the unfolding of history. The sovereign rule of God leaves too many unwelcome
subjects in our midst: famine, disease, hate, war, cruelty, waste, envy, greed,
despair, evil.
But even in the face of all these troubles, there is one mystery in God's
reign that outstrips all the others. It is a mystery that lives on in full sight of all
the ugliness and evil that lurk among the beauty of creation. The greatest imponderable of all, the ultimate mystery of God's sovereign rule, is the amazing
grace of God. "For God so loved the world ...."
Amen

THANK YOU
Congregational Care Team
With many thanks to Linda and Mabel, our telephone tree list has been
updated and completed.
We have continued with our visitations to our Trinity folks. Ed Wolf is
now at Grand Manor.
We didn’t have our September church picnic this year. Instead, we
had our potluck, program and celebration for Trinity’s 80th Anniversary.
Jackie put together some posters with pictures from our archives showing the
many celebrations and activities at Trinity. Kathy Hardin-Odle organized a
painting party where we made posters showing that Trinity is still growing,
caring, praying, learning, loving etc. Jessica Rains composed a DVD of different scenes and pictures of Trinity, and Eileen interviewed different members,
asking about their thoughts and memories about Trinity. Darla created awesome placemats with pictures of Trinity.
Thanks to the Anniversary committee and all members who helped
make this day truly an afternoon of “Congregational Caring.”
A big "THANK YOU" to Trinity's 80th Anniversary Committee (Jackie, Jessica, Eileen
and Sandy) for a wonderful celebration. We appreciate the hours of work the committee
did to make it a success.
Thanks also to everyone who helped with the church service, music, luncheon, placemats, booklets and special video.
Our guests gave complements on the hospitality provided by the Trinity members.
Charlie & Mabel Weik
Thank you to Dottie Cocker for all the work she did on the plants inside of the church.
They really have responded to the love and care that she showed to them.

Memorial Sunday
Sunday, November 2nd, is All Saints/
Memorial Sunday. On this Sunday, we
remember and celebrate the lives of
those who have died.
As is our
tradition, we will remember all who
received Christian burial as part of
Trinity’s ministry by reading their
names and tolling the bell. The service
will also include the Flowering of the
Cross and the Dedication of Memorial
Gifts.
All are invited to
participate
in
this
very
meaningful
moment
by
bringing a cut
flower to place
on the cross. This act of worship
reminds us that those who die in Christ
will rise again in the beauty of God’s
eternal realm.
(Flowers may be
brought to the cross in remembrance of
any person who has died … in the last
year or at any time.)
We, as a church family, continue to
share the pain and grief of those who
have lost loved ones. One way in which
we can be supportive is through grief
counseling. Contact Pastor Cory if you
would like to discuss grief-related
issues.

October 5-11 is the week set aside for Mental Illness Awareness. Since
1990, mental health advocates across the country have joined together to raise
mental illness awareness, spearheaded by NAMI’s (National Mental Illness) efforts to educate the public concerning mental health and illness issues. Each
year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental health condition. NAMI “fights the stigma, provides support, educates the public and advocates for equal care.”
I’d like to share some material from “A Family guide to Mental Health:
what you need to know”, published by NAMI. Mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person’s thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others, or
daily functioning. Just like any other organ, our brain can also get sick. One out
of four adults will experience a mental health disorder in a given year. “Mental
illness is not caused by weakness or character, bad upbringing, demonic possession, or a lack of faith. It’s is a serious biological condition of the brain that
potentially can be treated.”
An accurate diagnosis is important. With effective medication, psychotherapy, attention to health and wellness, and support from family and friends,
most people can obtain relief from symptoms, and lead satisfying and meaningful lives. Recovery is possible.
At the workshop Pastor Cory and I attended on “When Mental Illness Hits
Home”, I picked up many of the brochures available. I will have this material on
the table outside Pastor Cory’s office. Please help yourself. We would still like
to have a grogram on what we had learned, but we’re going to try to schedule it
in November. Until then, have a beautiful October—enjoy this glorious season!
