For the past several hundreds of years dating back to 14th century, there exists a tradition of singing the song to wake up Lord Venkateswara, over at this Ghanta Mantapam. It is known to all of us and practiced by millions of devotees all around the world. As all of you might have guessed by now, it is called SRI VENKATESWARA SUPRABHATAM. Early in the morning around 3 AM, Vaishnava priests sing the song of Suprabhatam to provide the wake up call to Lord Venkateswara. Serenity blended with peaceful environment is the norm here. The sacred hills of Tirumala echo and reverberate the melody filled with devotion. It is believed that the ashta dikpalakas, nava grahas and three crore devatas sing this with lot of reverence while being invisible to the ordinary devotees, who are assembled in Ghanta Mantapam. Sri Venkateswara wakes up with a smile and glances the 14 lokas. One can only imagine how sweet is that glance. When the elegantly eloquent, thousand tongued Adiseshu cannot describe the qualities of the grace with which the Lord looks at the fourteen lokas, it is better for the humans not to attempt any description. It is extremely important and interesting to know how this song came into existence and who penned the lyrics of this song. The devotee who was granted the great privilege by Srinivasa and earned his grace in the form of knowledge and eloquence is Sri Prativadi Bhayankar Annan. He was born at an auspicious time to the couple Anantacharyulu and Andal at Kanchipuram in the year 1361 AD. Annan’s family was very traditional. They were descendents of a person Mudumubai Nambi who was one of the 74 heads appointed by Sri Ramanujacharya. The name given by his parents at birth was HastiGiriNathar Annan. He gained expertise in all shastras at a very young age. He learned the details of shastras from a great scholar Acharya Nayana Varadacharyulu who was the son of Sri VenkataDesikulu. One day he defeated a scholar named Narasimha Mishra who came from North India in a debate by the virtue of his expertise. Varadacharya, who was very delighted with this outcome, awarded him the title Prativadi Bhayankar. From that day onwards he was known by this name. After some time, Annan joined as a student to Acharya Varavara muni who was the main Jeeyar of Srirangam. One day Acharya along with his students reached Tirumala to have darshan of Sri Venkateswara. While he had darshan of the Lord along with his favorite student Annan, He observed certain deficiencies such as lack of Suprabhatam or Mangala Sasanam. He immediately asked his favorite student Annan to pen lyrics of Suprabhatam. Taking that as a direct request from the Lord himself, Annan wrote and sang Suprabhatam, Stotram, Prapatti and Mangala Sasanam immediately at that moment. His teacher, the priests of the temple, and the devotees assembled were delighted and spellbound hearing such beautiful rendition using honey like words. Acharya Varavara muni ordered the temple priests to sing Annan’s lyrics every day in the early hours of every morning. Starting from that day the same lyrics are being sung to Srinivasa. He thus achieved the purpose of his birth and his name entered history books. The 1st sloka in Suprabhatam is said to be obtained from Ramayana where as the 9th, 10th and 13th slokas were obtained from Markandeya Puranam. Annan who wrote the lyrics of the Suprabhatam that are used as a wakeup call to the Lord of the universe is blessed. After a while upon Acharya’s direction, the same Suprabhatam has been propagated to 108 Sri Vaishnava kshetras. After the demise of Varavara muni, Annan spent the rest of his life in Kanchi and Tirumala. He passed away at a ripe age of 93 in the year 1454 AD and attained Moksha. The Suprabhatam, Stotram, Prapatti and Mangala Sasanam written by Annan are heard even today in the hills of Tirumala in the early hours of the morning. The whole world wakes up hearing the Suprabhatam of the protector of the worlds. The smiles of Srinivasa give the feeling of protection shields to the entire universe. This is the story of Suprabhatam. This is the wakeup call loved by Srinivasa. These are the Mangala sasanas. The word Alayam means a temple, sometimes also viewed to carry the meaning of sacred, and reflect the features of happiness (anandam) and courage (dhirayam). Baalalayam, while it appears to be a miniature temple, it also reflects the first step of a major venture of building a new temple. When we apply the term to our current situation it is as follows. When there are plans to build a permanent Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple here in the rocky mountain region of Colorado, it is customary to start the Balaalayam. That was accomplished on 9th October 2008 when Utsava Vigrhas of Sri Venkateswara Swamy along with Sridevi and Bhudevi were installed in a temporary temple. Now we are moving into our new permanent temple premises and it reflects one of the important milestones in the temple building process. While the basic construction of the Temple is complete, Indian Sthapathi (architecture) related work will be ongoing. So the shrine will still be known as Balaalayam until the time in the near future, when we accomplish the completion of Garbha Aalayam, Gopurams, Balipeetham, and Dwajasthambam, to mention a few, what is frequently referred to as indianization of a temple. After the completion of the above mentioned items, Kumbhabhishekam (PRANA PRATHISHTA) will be performed in the traditional ways to complete the process of building the temple in a very authentic fashion. We, here at Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple of Colorado will follow the well known Pancharathra Aagamam and have established the norms for generations to come. 09/06/08 Ganesha Chaturdhi 10/12/08 Udayasthamana Seva 10/12/08 Udayasthamana Seva 11/16/08 Dhanyadhivasam 01/07/09 Vaikunta Ekadasi 12/17/09 Well Construction 07/15/10 Start of Temple Construction 10/25/10 Temple Construction 01/01/09 New Year Day 06/10/09 Sri Tridandi Ranga Ramanuja Jeeyar Swamy 05/08/09 SVTC School Opening 08/21/09 Sahasravadhani Dr. Medasani Mohan 08/08/09 Karshanam 09/13/09 Karshanam 09/26/09 Karshanam 10/05/09 Pre Shanku Sthapana List of Donors who paid $1,000 or more as of 04/25/2011 NAME CHUKKAPALLI VJ KUNA GUPTA PENTELA RAMARAO SAGAR BT ANANDA MUPPALA DAMODARA IJJU VIJAYANANDA VERIZON FOUNDATION MATCHING . They have played a major role in promoting, preserving and celebrating the various Indian art forms. Since music and dance are so interwoven with Hindu worship and rituals, the temples became the chosen centers for the presentation and nurturing of these arts and the artists. Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple of Colorado, a Hindu Temple in the Rocky mountain Region, has played that significant role in the promotion of Indian culture by starting the SVTC school of Fine Arts. The SVTC school was started about two years ago in May 2009 with an intention to teach Music and Dance and introduce children to the rich heritage of Hinduism. Today we have about 60 students and 10 talented volunteer teachers teaching Classical Music, Tabla, Mridangam and Dance (Bhatathanatyam and Kuchipudi styles). We are also conducting Language classes in Telugu and Tamil. In the last few months there have been inquiries for starting Yoga and Veda Classes and our intent is to start them up very soon. After our initial successes with the SVTC School of fine arts, we decided to enhance the role of School and renamed it as "Education Committee". Some of the responsibilities of this committee are 1. Coordinate and organize classes in all types of classical music, dance, art, Indian languages, and literary programs which shall reflect Hindu Cultural Heritage. 2. Coordinate and organize educational classes for the benefit of members and devotees. 3. Assist in the development and maintenance of the Temple library. 4. Develop a program for acquiring and distributing educational materials that describe Hinduism for the education of devotees. 5. Work with religious committee in organizing programs for Temple festivals.
