Josh Snyder · Editor
If you’re like me, this time of year is a time
of anticipation. I like to get out and do
things, and this time of year, for the most
part, is not conducive to doing things outside, like driving a Porsche. I can’t tell you
how much I’m anticipating March 8 when
we move our clocks forward and get an
extra hour of daylight! The weather starts
turning and it’s a glorious time of year.
Now, though, is a time of planning. We begin filling our
calendars with business travel, sporting events, vacations
and more. Hopefully, there’s time left over to attend one of
the many OVR events the club is already diligently planning for the year. As secretary and newsletter editor this
year, my eyes have really been opened to the massive
effort put into each event to make it something truly special
for our members. As a credit to our chairs, each one wants
to make his or her event really stand out among the crowd
of so many great events each year.
Steve Nelson is busy coordinating with numerous other
groups to plan concours events throughout the year. Red
Brick Reunion looks to be a bigger and better event this
year with a happy hour on Friday, car show on Saturday
and possibly a group drive to French Lick for Parade on
Sunday. I’m sure the serious concours folks are already
planning their show schedule for the year and brushing up
on techniques to make their car “pop” more than the next
guy's.
Mark Simpson is planning our West Virginia Outreach
event for the end of May. To give you a sneak peek into
the planning process, there’s a possible car show at the
Greenbrier Sporting Club and a tour through the Appalachian Mountains. Bill Kief and the autocross committee
have a full slate of autocross events planned this year.
Gary Nichols is making special plans for our 25th year at
Mid-Ohio.
Earlier this year, I wanted a way to track all of these fantastic events and to update them as soon as someone in
the club sent me dates and information about them, so I
created a calendar with my ovrbentpylon@gmail.com address. You can already keep track of the OVR calendar in
the Bent Pylon and on our website at ovrpca.org. However,
in our increasingly tech-centered society, many people
expect to have access to their calendar all the time on any
device, particularly mobile devices.
Now you can keep track of all OVR events by subscribing to the iCal format link at the bottom of this article. No
matter what type of electronic calendar you use (Outlook,
Google, Yahoo!, etc) you should be able to find instructions
on how to subscribe to an iCal calendar. The only compatibility issue I know of is Outlook for Mac users.

Josh Snyder - Editor, Photos by Patrick McCue
Bill Kief is a former OVR president and current autocross
chair. He lives in Anderson, works in industrial sales and
spends the majority of his free time in Cincinnati with
OVR members. Bill also has a second life in Los Angeles
with his wife Janet and daughter Jayde who are following
Jayde's creative life in performance arts. This gives Bill a
chance to chase the west coast car scene and expand his
Porsche family.
Why did you become a board member?
Paul and Marilyn Jones asked Janet and me to serve on
the OVR board in 1994 and anyone who met Paul and
Marilyn quickly understood they rarely if ever heard the
word no. I have enjoyed every bit of serving the club.
What was your first Porsche?
My first Porsche was a 1985 Carrera with Guards Red
paint, black interior, Guards Red BBS wheels and both
front and rear spoilers. Janet and I loved that car.
What is your current Porsche?
Presently my daughter Jayde and I own a 2012 Cayman
R with Peridot Metallic paint, black Alcantara interior, 19"
wheels, some aluminum body panels and front and rear
spoilers. Jayde and I prepared it for a few concours events
the first year but now we enjoy track events and autocross
with our dear Peridot.
What is your favorite Porsche of all time?
My favorite Porsche of all time was the GT1. Rohr Motorsport here in northern Cincinnati campaigned one in 1997
and won the IMSA Championship. I was lucky enough to
know the Rohr guys and spent a lot of time at the garage
and at the track with them and the car.

What is your most memorable OVR event and why?
The 1993 Porsche Parade was hosted by OVR. Janet
and I were new to OVR but thought it was a blast. We met
hundreds of PCA members, several Porsche executives
and Peter Porsche, son of Ferry Porsche. Janet volunteered in hospitality and I volunteered for concours garage
prep security, hospitality and Sale Night at The Goodie
Store. That was wilder than the Moonlight Sales at McAlpins in Anderson.
If you could tell Porsche management one thing, what
would it be?
I would tell them to keep making cars that are fun to drive
and affordable to own. I would also ask for a lower weight
(2500 lb) and higher horsepower (400) mid-engine car.

OVR PCA Profile
Brent Fagan - Membership Chair
The Ohio Valley Region PCA membership has grown to
almost 800 Primary Active members. Thirty-nine of our
prized members have not listed an email address in their
PCA profile. Fifteen of those without an email address
also have not listed a phone number in their profile. We
respect our members' privacy and absolutely will not call
unless contact is first initiated by the member. However,
every member is very important and we want to insure
that each member has an opportunity to participate in our
Region and National activities. In an average month, the
Ohio Valley Region sends out about three emails to the
entire membership. For those who consider email as a
bother, we hope that there is a designee, such as a family
member, or possibly a work associate or subordinate who
could capture and direct important communications.
Please contact me so I can help update your profile with
your designated email address. My contact information is
listed in this publication in the section entitled Committee
Chairs.
Autocross
Nicole Dubnicay-Wellen - Autocross Committee
How many times have you been out for an evening drive,
only to notice an empty parking lot off to the side with its
lonely streetlamps calling you to take your Porsche on a
whirlwind trip through its crisscross lines as fast as you
can go? But alas, the fear of police sirens, security guards
and those mischievous door dinging shopping carts keep
you from being able to fulfil your desire. Problem solved:
Autocross!
Ohio Valley Region will be kicking off a long anticipated
autocross season in 2015 with five events starting in April
and ending in September. Events will be held at Forest
Fair Mall, the current location of Bass Pro Shops, near the
intersection of I-275 (exit 39) and Winton Road north of
Cincinnati.
The driving area will be in the back parking lot, a generous space where drivers will be able to reach substantial
speeds by autocross standards. According to Bill Kief,
OVR Autocross Committee Chair, “We all know there is
pent-up demand and finding a large lot was the holdup.
This venue gives us many desirable track configuration
possibilities.”
PCA groups drivers by their car class, Pi (356) through
P32 (991 Turbo S). There will be several classes for competition depending on what cars show up. Startup time on
each Saturday day will be 8 a.m., with registration, tech inspections, track familiarity and morning briefing. There are
options for eateries and restrooms in and near the mall.
Bring a folding chair and personal shade if needed.
Be on the lookout for more articles about Autocross in
upcoming issues of the Bent Pylon. If you’re interested in
autocross, join us March 28 at Porsche of the Village for
an autocross clinic. We will cover all the basics of this
exciting sport and answer your questions.
For more information please contact Bill Kief at highspeedriving@gmail.com.
For those new to the sport, autocross is a fun and exciting way to drive your vehicle on a small track against the
clock. Drivers will be maneuvering around sharp curves,
slaloms, straightaways and in tight handling situations
while pushing the cars' limits. All of this will be accomplished in a safe and controlled environment. One driver
will be on the course individually so the risk to the vehicle
is slight. Safety is always the primary concern at an autocross event.
Autocross is a fabulous opportunity for OVR members
to get out and drive! It’s an inexpensive way to push your
driving limits, learn about safe handling in your vehicle and
even earn some bragging rights. The events will be open
to all OVR members, friends and family and their vehicles.
Estimated cost per driver is $25 for the day.

Spring Classic Driving Tour
Kurt Niemeyer - Member
Here in the Ohio Valley the frosty grip of winter is keeping
many of us in the garage preparing our favorite wheeled
friend for better (read warmer) days ahead. The Spring
Equinox is approaching and the first of many driving tours
for OVR is just down the road! Mark your calendar for Saturday April 18 to drive across southwest Ohio and get your
own Porsche season rolling.
The Adams County Classic Driving Tour 2015 will wind
across the ridges and valleys of southern Ohio, along
Ancient Buffalo and Indian Trails, across the rim of a crater
and bend along creek beds bursting with the first blooms
of the new season. New routing and destinations are
planned for your driving pleasure with stops at our favorite
Amish Market for delicacies and accessories, where Tom
Cole will be checking out the pies! The John T. Wilson
Homestead Underground Railroad Station and Nationally
recognized Historical Site is also on the agenda. A tour
conducted by restorers Ralph and Patty Alexander will
highlight the story. Barn Sale Antiques features a corner of
Gas Station/Auto Dealer memorabilia always popular with
car enthusiasts. Again this year we will be winding down
at Moyer’s On the River where you can sample the wine
and culinary delights before a relaxing drive will get you
back home.
The route is continuously and rigorously tested for characteristics that explore many features of your car while
providing exemplary scenery and an overall lack of traffic.
Entrants will be dispatched in small groups to avoid traffic
congestion and allow everyone to safely enjoy the performance of their machine. We are in need of several more
people to lead small groups of cars, so if you are interested
in leading a group of cars, please send a message and we
can get you acclimated with route instructions in advance
of the event.
Last year we had 70 cars enjoy this event when we visited
Adams County. Watch this space for online registration
information coming soon!
Departing Saturday, April 18, 2015, registration 8 am.,
entrants meeting 9 am., first car out 9:30 am. From Burger
King 882 State Route 28, Milford Ohio 45150.

Parade 101
Ted Hunter - OVR Member at Large, photos by Ted Hunter
OVR hosted a Porsche Club of America panel discussion
of the upcoming 60th Porsche Parade to be held this year
at French Lick, Indiana on June 21-27. The panel included
PCA Zone 4 Representative Michael Soriano (accompanied by his wife, Lisa), French Lick Resorts representatives
Dean Blackburn and Jordan Santo, PCA Parade Committee member Francie Kish (accompanied by her husband,
Phil) and OVR members Ted Hunter, Kathie Hunter, Dave
Collins and John Patterson.
Attendees will earn a PCA Judging Certification at the end
of the all-day event. The goal is to train more judges who
will be available for Parade Concours in the future. There
will be a limit on attendees. Keep an eye on the Zone 4
website and in Michael’s monthly column in the Bent Pylon
for more details.
Over 70 OVR members attended the two sessions. The
morning session was hosted by Porsche of the Village
and the afternoon session by White-Allen European Auto
Group. We thank both of these dealers for their continued
support of our region’s activities. They were very accommodating for this panel discussion event.
The panel discussion revolved around the Porsche Parade
experience, procedures of Registration, events of the week
and the special attractions specific to this 60th anniversary
of the celebration of all things Porsche. The French Lick
Resort has really rolled out the red carpet for the PCA
Parade event. The facilities are spectacular and historic,
the amenities are first-rate and the prices are truly unbelievable. Much more information is on parade2015.pca.org.
This event has the potential to be one of the most impressive PCA Parades.
Also, Michael Soriano reported a special Parade Concours
Judging Certification program is scheduled for Bluegrass
Porsche in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday, March 28.

Chili Party
Dennis Okin - Vice-President
On Saturday, January 24, approximately 140 folks descended on Porsche Kings Auto Mall for our annual kickoff
party of the year. I want to thank Bill Winstel, Jeff Paul and
ALL of the employees at the dealership who helped make
this our largest, most successful chili party yet. Every
year they provide the rental tables and chairs, soft drinks,
water, paper and plastic products and many of the gifts
that are auctioned off. It was wonderful for Susan and me
to arrive at 5:00 p.m. and to see the tables with tablecloths
and chairs set up for the party. Many unnamed people at
the dealership helped from setting up tables and chairs to
wiring the tables for the chili and even unloading our car.
Thanks again to Porsche Kings Auto Mall for everything.
Dennis Okin presenting a check to Jill, Rodney and Jessie
Markland. Photo by Ted Hunter.
We had 16 chili entrants with a wide variety of tastes, and
the number of desserts was the most ever. Our mystery
judges chose the winners of the contests. Michael and Sonya Fogelman won for best chili and Pam Busam won for
best dessert. It was amazing to see all of the chili, as well
as chips and salsa consumed. Somehow, six large bottles
of red wine, four large bottles of white wine and over 100
beers all disappeared. What a hungry, thirsty crew!

not wait to show me his scars from numerous surgeries.
NF is such a debilitating disease; the Markland’s have lost
count as to how many operations Jessie has had over the
years. I was pleased to present Jill and Jessie a check for
$2500 for the Children’s Tumor Foundation which fights NF
every day. I am thrilled to announce that OVR has raised
nearly $20,000 for this cause over the years.
Our auction was lively. OVR donated two driver education
certificates. The dealership donated two large Porsche
replica cars, three small Porsche model cars, a Porsche
watch and a variety of sweatshirts and golf shirts. Mary
Seigel even won the bid on a Porsche 918 replica and then
gave the car to Jessie Markland. He did not let go of that
car for the rest of the evening and never stopped smiling.
Thank you, Mary, for such a kind gesture.
Jill, Rodney and Jessie Markland attended our event. Jessie is afflicted with neurofibromatosis (NF), and he could
Finally, I have a number of other people to thank for making this event so successful. In addition to the people at
Porsche Kings Auto Mall, Herb and Sandi Beck helped
with the all the final touches, registration, tear down and
loading of my car. Ted Hunter secured the tables used
for the chili from the hospital and acted as photographer.
Kathie Hunter ran registration. Thomas Crihfield supplied
and set up the amp and speakers. As usual, my wife pulled
the whole thing together and made it look well organized.
We hope to see everyone again next year.

Way Back When
Gary Nichols - Spring DE Chair
We all keep memories of our past, usually stored in boxes
in the basement or a closet, items that seldom come out to
be viewed. When they are brought out, on occasion, they
bring back those times in vivid clarity. Thanks to Kathie
Hunter who found this t-shirt pictured here in a box in her
basement, the giveaway to entrants in OVR’s first Driver’s
Education event at Mid-Ohio 25 years ago. There is a
good chance this is the only one that survived that length
of time. Of course Kathie and Ted have been storing OVR
history in one shape or another for a long, long time, and
for that diligence, we are grateful.
I was not at this inaugural event, having brought home the
SC that still sits in my garage on December 12, 1990, a
few months after this event took place. If you were there in
1990, and have continued to join us all through the years,
then you are certainly in a select club of just a few. I can
think of Jerry Wolf, Ted and Kathie Hunter and John Meyer
as ones that have likely made the roster. If you were there,
I would enjoy hearing from you.
point A to point B. Cars hold something special in our
worlds. I have made so many friends from my love of cars
and have so many memories enjoying those times we
spent together sharing the common thread of cars. The
photo albums in my basement are filled with those memories, most of them with a car in the picture along with those
friends.
June 12-14, 2015 will mark 25 years for this club venturing to Mid-Ohio. Whether you are a veteran of this event,
a first timer, or somewhere in between, we invite you to
join us in the celebration. Come and drive your Porsche
the way it was designed in a safe and controlled setting.
Rekindle old friendships, make new ones. Put some more
memories in your personal album.
If you are reading this, then you qualify as a car enthusiast, more than likely, a bona fide car nut, particularly to
Porsches. Take a minute and ponder how many memories
you have that centered on cars, be it road trips, vacations

National Corvette Museum
Richard Wartenberg - OVR Member
Well, needless to say, I didn't get this written up the weekend after I got back in October. I do, however, hope it's in
plenty of time to get both the truly addicted track junkies
and the people wanting to finally give DE a shot, a bit of an
adrenaline boost to shake off the mid-west cold!
Much like the Bluegrass Motorsports Park near the Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, KY, there has been a lot of talk
about the new track at the National Corvette Museum in
Bowling Green. For all you track rats the track itself is complete! What more could you want? Well, to keep the support staff (read wife/kids/girlfriend) happy, porcelain potties
would be a good start. Right now all they have is a fairly
ample supply of Porta-Johns, an already well-used and
very small portable air compressor, and acres and acres
of marvelous parking lot space. The large parking lot was
even designed with large scale autocrosses in mind. The
only problem with making the parking lot that wide open is
they did not pre-wire any of it for electricity, which I found
very surprising. The other absent thing is any type of vending. There’s no food or drink unless you or the club you're
with brings it. There are restaurants fairly close by, but not
what I would call convenient. The Corvette Museum knows
all this and has plans to work on it, but plan accordingly if
you go.
you start accelerating for the first “straight" section. There
is a slight veer right then left at what they've marked Turn
4, then light brake to set the car and enter the first of two
very fast right hand sweepers. It takes a few sessions to
make you a believer, but both have a remarkable amount
of grip. Only one of them is slightly off camber, but I'll leave
it to you to figure out which one.
Enough of the things that don’t matter. Let's talk converting
fossil fuels to noise! First I'd like to thank Dale Timmester
for putting the word out to our group, and even more so,
against his better judgment, for giving the Bluegrass BMW
Club a nod of approval to let me instruct for them during
not only their first, but the first ever real DE at the track!
Previously, they only had two or three weekends of invitation-only gatherings.
Overall, what I found most surprising was that it is not
what I thought a near private race course built almost right
outside the delivery-end door of the Corvette production
facility would be! Shame on me and good for them. I had
a pre-conceived notion that it would be a "Vette Track"
with long straight-aways and short twisty sections. In a nut
shell: point-and-shoot. I don't think I could have been more
wrong. In fact, it seems more geared for a momentum car
like a Porsche than a big monstrous V8 powered Corvette. The following is roughly how I break it down. Please
remember, not very many people have driven it yet. Once
they do, I'm sure there will be as many opinions as there
are drivers, many better than mine.
After the first few sessions on Friday, my mind seemed to
view it as four technical sections, three straight sections,
two sharp turns (one almost a hairpin) and one chicane.
You enter the track at a safe spot between the end of the
chicane and the first sharp turn (Turn 2). Just stay left for
passing traffic. This feeds immediately into Turn 3 where
14
The first sweeper leads directly into the first technical part
of the track. Brake hard for a right turn with not much room
for track out. It feels like pulling into someone's driveway
at 60 mph. This is probably a good time to bring up a key
feature of the track. The track makes use of two different
types of curbing. One is a smooth yet fairly high curb that
is surprisingly easy to drive up on and even necessary
such as entering the chicane. The second is like the spine
of an evil dragon that will shake your car, disrupt your
traction and maybe even shake loose a filling or two. Don't
enter Turn 6 too hot or you'll see what I mean. Ask me how
I know. Turns 7 through 9 are a fun exercise in timing and
balance leading into the tightest and slowest turn on the
track, Turn 10. Again, the track-out leads to the alligator
curbing which I watched quite a few cars ops-check. Next,
there's a short, almost straight, section that your mind
wants to make a part of the "middle straight", but the right
hand Turn 12 is just too tight to take flat out.
Motorsports Park First Look
Richard Wartenberg - OVR Member
The "middle straight" is very fast with a couple of minor
kinks (plenty of room for passing) but leads into what I
thought was the most unnerving part of the track, the braking zone for Turn 16. Right at the point where you'd like to
brake, the track fades away and turns left followed by a
right-hand rise and entry to the fast Turn 16. Only you can't
see it! You’ll be amazed what blind faith, a heavy right foot
and sticky tires can do. This part is much like Turn 5 only
Turn 17 is much faster and there's plenty of track-out. Incidentally, this also leads to the track exit on the left, which
was not well marked at all and the exit procedure changed
at least three times over the weekend.
Now, staying on-track, we've entered the next technical
area, the Sink Hole. You need to stay wide left, fairly deep,
in Turn 18 then again commit to a completely blind late
apex where the track drops into the abyss. If you find that
you missed making it all the way in to the curbing, I would
advise accepting what you've got, while you still have grip,
and just brake more than normal and take the next left
hander slow. I saw a four-door M3 totaled against the inner
wall here, and my student spun his '08 C2S so that we slid
sideways down the hill. The woman in the instructor seat
of the Corvette following us said she'd never seen eyes as
big as mine. Keep in mind, not only are the drivers learning
this track, the corner workers are too! The corner worker
back up at the top of the hill literally had no idea what to do
when we spun. It was a little scary. When you get the Sink
Hole right and you carry some good energy into Turn 20,
the “Esses” through Turn 23 are just plain fun!
All of this has brought you to the front straight. Finally
a straight that is actually straight, where I can check oil
pressure and temp. Not for long though because the
chicane comes up fast. Not that I would know first-hand,
but we were told the chicane is absolutely identical to
the one at LeMans. In fact several parts of the track are
supposed to be. All I know is that it's actually a really fun
part of the track coming off the fast straight, and amazingly the tall smooth curbing is easy to cut across. This
leaves me where I told you I was most surprised. I felt as if
I was going fast! I was going fast. But I never got out of 4th
gear. Prior to the DE, the track was so new, that the only
YouTube videos I could find were of an SUV on a gravel
surface and another of a GT3 the week before I went. I
had noticed that the GT3 never made it all the way through
the gearbox either. What a track! No time to rest! I would
go back in a heartbeat.
I hope by pointing out a couple of mishaps on the track
that I haven't turned any new folks off that are on the fence
with their baby. Mid-Ohio and Putnam Park are definitely
more forgiving and so much fun, but NCMP is still a work
in progress. I do fully believe that DE is the best and safest
way to invest in you being able to handle your car when
and if you ever get yourself into a "high performance" situation. See everyone in the good weather at Mid-Ohio!

RBR Letter of Commendation
Steve Nelson - Concours Chair
Red Brick Reunion (RBR) chairpersons braved unpredictable winter weather conditions in late January and met
with Porsche of the Village (POV) leadership to personally
present the POV Team with a "Letter of Commendation for
Outstanding Sponsorship Support" as the Inaugural RBR
Premier Sponsor in 2014. Later that afternoon, OVR also
presented Dave and Steve Schardt of Forgeline and their
team a "Letter of Commendation for Excellent Support and

Around the Zone
Michael Soriano - Zone 4 Representative
Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,
As we are all looking forward to the arrival of spring, many regions are offering
tech sessions to get our cars prepped for
the driving season. In addition, regions
have found ways to encourage PCA
camaraderie during these winter months.
There have been chili cook-offs, membership dinners, and new member events
as well as Daytona viewing parties, and
Saturday breakfasts.
Last month I assembled a team of Parade experts and
brought them with me to the Ohio Valley Region for 2
Parade 101 sessions in Cincinnati and Dayton. Nearly
100 members attended these informational meetings at
Porsche of the Village and White-Allen Porsche. On hand
to answer questions was a parade committee member,
French Lick Resort management, and seasoned parade
veterans who led discussions on Concours, TSD Rally,
and Tech quiz. A few days later I travelled to Maryland to
attend the Winter Board of Directors Meeting. In fact the
entire time I was there, I was so busy in meetings that I
actually set foot out of the hotel only twice during my stay.
One of those times was to attend an open house at PCA
headquarters, where we were treated to the unveiling of
the new Porsche Club Coupe.
Plans are being made for a combined Zone 4 and Zone 13
National Concours Judges School for the purpose of maintaining current and recruiting a new generation of Concours Judges. Information on the school’s date, location,
and time will be posted on the Zone 4 website as soon as
details become available.
Please be sure to check your inboxes, local region’s website and newsletter, as well as the Zone 4 website http://
zone4.pca.org for the latest details on the many events
available to you. Consider attending one of the many
events being held throughout Zone 4 such as:
• March 3 is Rally Sport Region’s Member Meeting at
Karl’s Cabin in Plymouth, MI
•Central Indiana Region’s 1st Saturday Breakfast will be
held on March 7 at Charlie Brown’s in Speedway, IN
• Motor-Stadt Region’s Board Meeting is March 10 at Spagnolo’s in Okemos, MI
• Michiana Region’s Membership Meeting will be held on
March 11 at Colombo’s in Elkhart, IN.
• Join Mid-Ohio Region members on March 14 for a Trickle
Charged Saturday at Kraftwerks in Marengo, OH
• March 18 is Western Michigan Region’s March Dinner
Drive at the Grattan Irish Pub
• Allegheny Region’s Opera Night is March 21
• On March 28, Ohio Valley Region is hosting an Autocross
Clinic at Porsche of the Village
• Southeast Michigan Region is holding a Tech Session at
Gilson Motorsports on March 28
I look forward to having the opportunity of meeting each
and every one of you as I visit each region throughout the
year. If you have any questions or comments please feel
free to contact me at MSoriano.ZoneRep@gmail.com.
As I have previously stated, one of my goals has been for
the regions to join together and work as one cohesive zone
in order to provide our members with even more opportunities to enjoy our cars. To help further this goal, the Events
page on the Zone 4 website will soon contain a master
Zone 4 calendar.
