This generosity will help parents who wish to keep their children busy and mentally stimulated while school is out. And for the adults, many of whom have heavy worries these days, a bit of culture could be a welcome diversion.” The Columbus Dispatch, editorial, May 27, 2009, referring to the Museum’s Summer Fun initiative which provided free admission and enhanced programming in July and August to more than 30,000 Central Ohio visitors. To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum opening. Photograph by Greg Miller. To say that 2009 was an eventful year would be beyond understatement. The economic turmoil created challenges unprecedented for many of us and adversely impacted cultural organizations throughout the world. We at the Museum learned to adjust quickly to the shifting economic environment and at the same time to not lose sight of our goals and responsibilities. Both the Board and the staff continued to move your Museum forward to achieve our mission of great experiences with great art for everyone. Below are some highlights of this year’s accomplishments: • CMA achieved the second highest attendance in our history • Artful Adventures, our early-childhood program experienced a 200 percent increase in participation plus provided free access to preschoolers in the Head Start program • To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum was viewed by nearly 100,000 visitors and was enhanced by a collaboration with COSI, Columbus Metropolitan Library, and several library branches • George Tooker: A Retrospective exhibition and catalogue were acclaimed by the New York Times as “richly affecting” and one of the Top 10 art books of 2009 7 • Our Summer Fun initiative, made possible by the generosity of our members, provided FREE admission in July and August to 30,000 visitors. • Chihuly Illuminated provided the opportunity for us to partner with Franklin Park Conservatory to bring the bold color and dramatic forms of Dale Chihuly to Central Ohio. • Our Art Matters endowment and capital campaign continued forward, and as a result we are building our endowment, refurbishing our buildings, and creating a stronger foundation for future generations to enjoy art and learning in Central Ohio. Despite the challenges, we are persevering and we will continue to add to our community fabric and the quilt of life. This is only being accomplished through the support and dedication of our volunteers, our members, our donors, and our community. Remember our motto, “Art Speaks. Join the conversation.” Thank you all for joining the conversation. D. Scott Owens Board President Community Community “We feel that there were a lot of great, deserving events and programs in Central Ohio in 2009. However, these three really stood out as examples of Columbus’ collaborative and innovative spirit. Egypt in Columbus, Pelotonia and Huntington Park all raised awareness of Columbus as a destination nationally, one that is ever evolving and striving to make the visitor experience uniquely definable and memorable. For this, we applaud their efforts.” Paul Astleford, president and CEO of Experience Columbus commenting on 2009 EXPY award recipients. EXPY awards are given annually to organizations that have a positive impact on Columbus’ economy, advance the community's image on a regional and national level, display high degree of creativity and uniqueness, and demonstrate communitywide collaboration and partnership. Egypt in Columbus, a partnership with COSI, Columbus Metropolitan Library, Grandview Heights Public Library, Southwest Public Library of Franklin County, Upper Arlington Public Library, Westerville Public Library, and Worthington Public Library, created a website and a Passport to Egypt that was promoted by all partners for eight months in 2009. 8 ACQUISITIONS 2009 Albert Francis King American, 1854 - 1945 Apples 1880 Oil Museum Purchase Peanuts 1880 Oil Museum Purchase Robert Kipniss American, born 1931 Path 1960 Oil Gift of James F. The Docents traveled to Akron to participate in a Docent Symposium with the Akron Art Museum and the Dayton Art Institute, where they exchanged ideas, touring strategies, and conversations. Two CMA Docents participated in a telephone crash conference for Art Beyond Sight, an organization that promotes art education for the visually impaired. The Docents were also key in collecting the responses needed for an evaluation of the Artful Reading program, a partnership program between the Columbus Museum of Art and Columbus City Schools that reaches all CCS 5th graders. This evaluation helped prove that students were using and developing critical thinking skills through the tour. And, to celebrate another successful year of the Artful Reading program, CMA held the first annual Columbus City School Day for Families, providing free admission, activities and great experiences for over 3,000 visitors. White Creativity Creativity “I am constantly awed by the creative staff at the Columbus Museum of Art. They challenge the established ideas in the field and create dynamic experiences that allow their visitors to engage with art and each other. Their experimentation and risk taking have made them art museum innovators.” Jessica Luke, Director of Research and Evaluation at the Institute for Learning Innovation, Baltimore, Maryland The Institute for Learning Innovation (ILI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to understanding, facilitating and communicating about free-choice learning. Through our work with ILI, the Museum has conducted myriad research and evaluation projects that empower CMA with information to create rich and meaningful learning experiences for everyone. 32 ART MATTERS DONOR LISTINGS Thank you to all of the donors who have $50,000-$99,999 declared that Art Matters!
