VC & MD’s Message
Dear Customers,
Very warm greetings to all the readers of Concreting Times.
The road sector continues to be buoyant. Many more road works were awarded in the last 6 months, which has brought some cheer to the road
construction equipment manufacturers. Most of the road contracts awarded recently are for concrete roads. Therefore, the concreting
equipment manufacturers, especially Batching Plant manufacturers were benefitted. It is expected that in the coming months, several more
road contracts will be awarded.
Having said that, the overall sentiment amongst the construction equipment manufacturers continues to be cautiously positive. The 2 day
seminar conducted by the “Ministry of Road Transport and Highways” (MORTH) in coordination with ICEMA in the beginning of July, 2015 was a
grand success. The next major event for the construction industry and the construction equipment manufacturers, “EXCON 2015”. This exhibition
is conducted by CII with ICEMA being its sector partner and supported by Builders Association of India.
Coinciding with the EXCON Fair, ICEMA will be conducting a 2 day conference on “Rebooting Infrastructure” on 26th and 27th of November,
2015. There will be presentations and panel discussions on topics of varied interest : transportation infra, smart city roadmap, skill development,
equipment financing and component and aggregate manufacturing (Make in India).
During this conference, ICEMA will also come out with an industry report on the Indian construction equipment
industry, “ICE Vision 2020”. This report will cover various topics like the state of infrastructure industry,
current demand scenario of IC industry, critical issues faced by Indian construction industry, the future outlook
(midterm 2020), market size for equipment by 2020 and way forward on critical issues. These copies would
be available for sale to all the stakeholders, these details can be obtained from the secretary of ICEMA,
Mr. S.G. Roy, whose email id is s.g.roy@cii.in.
SCHWING Stetter India will be participating in the EXCON Fair in a big way. We will be launching 6 new
products. 6 variants with upgradation on the existing products and many innovations and new
control systems for Batching Plants and Concrete Pumps will also be launched. On behalf of
SCHWING Stetter India, I invite all the readers of concreting times, to visit the fair at Bengaluru
between 25th and 29th of November, 2015.
I am quite hopeful that this EXCON will be a starting point for redevelopment and growth of
infrastructure in our Country and will be a success, for both the construction industry and
construction equipment manufacturers. Finally, I wish all the readers of concreting times
very happy Vijayadasami, Diwali, Christmas and New Year 2016. May this festive season

Cover Story
Schwing Stetter at Thermal Power Projects
Concrete is the world's second most consumed material after water,
and its widespread use is the basis for urban development. Thermal
power projects are classified into Coal, Natural Gas and Nuclear
power plant. Coal-based thermal power plants have been a major
source of power generation in India, where 75% of the total power
obtained is from coal-based thermal power plants. The coal reserve
of India is about 200 billion tonnes (bt) and its annual production
reaches 250 million tonnes (mt) approximately. About 70% of this is
used in the power sector.
SCHWING Stetter in thermal power plants:
Concreting a power plant will involve massive amount of concrete.
Schwing Stetter equipment are working round the clock in producing
such levels of concrete.

A smoke flue is arranged concentrically inside the chimney while
leaving a free space between the chimney and the flue. This flue is
designed to protect the concrete of the chimney against heat stress,
i.e., against the chemical attack of hot gases; the free space
guarantees heat insulation and at the same time permits any possible
necessary maintenance or repair work. A version involving two
cylindrical towers made of concrete and forming a continuous block,
resting on the same foundations, ensures the stability of the chimney,
which, if built separately, would require a conical structure with
foundations and a floor slab plate of its own. This arrangement makes
it possible to achieve considerable savings, especially in terms of the
volume and the weight of the chimney tower and its construction
cost.

the cost of conical sliding
coffering. Second, it
facilitates savings in
terms of the weight and
the volume of the
common foundations as
well as the floor slab plate
surface, which is reduced.
Finally, it is possible to use
the concrete cover of the
boiler house in place of a
shingle covering. On the
other hand, it should be
noted that the time to
build these structures is
much shorter due to the
usage of cylindrical
sliding coffering; this is
not without significance in terms of construction time. Our recent

One of our recent project is for the company Bhavnagar energy
company limited with its power project had the contractors of
Shapoorji Pallonji and Paharpur cooling towersin constructing the
cooling tower of 110 m height. The total concrete poured and
produced in this project is around 2 lakh m3.The concrete grades used
were M10, M25, M30, M35, M40. Concreting record is 2700m3 in 44
hours. Also, the concreting achievement is 1,500m3 produced in one
day with M1 and CP 30 batching plant.
Concreting the power plant:
The object of the invention of a thermal power plant is especially with
a view to the production of electric power, including at least one boiler
house equipped with a boiler and at least one chimney for the
evacuation of the fumes produced by the boiler, characterised by the
fact that the boiler house and the chimney present a common lateral
wall portion and are made up of a unitary concrete structure. One way
of setting up the thermal power plant, including the boiler house with
a tower and a chimney. A common supporting structure consists of
foundations, which support a floor slab plate. The boiler house and
the chimney reveal a vertical portion with a common lateral wall.
These structures are made of concrete and constitute a continuous
assembly. The tower of the boiler house, in particular, consists of a
layer of reinforced concrete about 20cm thick, surmounted by a belt
of reinforced concrete. In this example, the tower has a cylindrical
revolution shape. The concrete layer of this tower serves as a cover
for the boiler house, supporting and sheltering it. The tower of the
chimney as such consists of a revolution cylinder of reinforced
concrete with a thickness of about 30cm.

Schwing Stetter Projects around the world
World’s tallest 1 km super tall
Kingdom Tower
at Jeddah
Construction has begun at the tallest building in the world using Schwing Stetter equipment:
The Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudia Arabia, will stand 3,280 feet, designed by Adrian Smith +
Gordon Gill Architecture of Chicago. It is part of the larger development, Kingdom City, and will
be the first structure in the world to reach the one-kilometer-high mark (the original design was
to be one-mile-high (1.6 km), but the geology of the area was not suitable for that height).
The project comes with a (literally) high-minded pedigree. The final height of the project is
undisclosed. This recalls the height wars in New York City in the last century, when the top of the
Chrysler Building was kept hidden until its final debut, in order to beat out the Manhattan Trust
Building.
“If you want to be a serious city, you have to show you are serious,” says Alejandro Stochetti,
director of Smith's company, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture. “For that, you need an
iconic building” most extreme project yet: Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. When it
opens in 2019, it will be the first building ever to exceed 1 km.
Its vast interiors will have 59 elevators—five of them double-deck so they can stop at two floors
at once - that will travel at speeds designed to prevent ears popping. Financed by the Saudi
billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, the tower will anchor a new suburb of Jidda, called
Kingdom City, which the Saudis hope will draw millions of pilgrims traveling to nearby Mecca
and Medina.
As these supertall buildings have few dramatical technical challenges involved in reaching this
height as they do not come cheap: Kingdom Tower's workers spent more than a year simply
digging a foundation strong enough to support its structure, which will have 157 floors and use
about 80,000 tons of steel.
Still, the drive to build upward continues, in part because supertall buildings can transform an
entire city. “There are a number of reasons people try to build very tall. First is ego,” Smith says.
“Someone says, 'I just want to build it, and I am rich enough.' It is for bragging rights.”
The major technical challenge for supertall buildings is wind, which tends to push into
structures and accelerate upward - what engineers call the stack effect. That can cause full-on
motion sickness for dwellers on triple-digit floors. To break the vortex, they designed Kingdom
Tower with a sloping exterior.
The other problem is less obvious: elevators. Beyond a certain length, elevator cables have
been too thick to spool, requiring people to switch elevators once or twice to reach the top of
the tallest buildings, which turns a trip to the lobby into a commute. Yet even that problem could
soon be solved. The Finnish company Kone recently unveiled a lightweight, carbon-fiber rope
that will be capable of lifting people all the way up Kingdom Tower in a single elevator ride.
A mile-high building would have about 600,000 sq m of space, double the BurjKhalifa. The
biggest challenge would be filling it.
The more worrying question is whether the earth can sustain this mania for height. On the one
hand, supertall buildings can spur public transportation that might never be built without it.
Putting 5,000 tenants in one gigantic tower requires a footprint of about 2 hectares, compared
with 12 hectares if they were spread out in three-story buildings.
But the reality is that supertall towers are energy-sucking machines. These towers, however,
were never meant for efficiency, but rather for awe, and even shock. And so there will likely
always be demand for new ones.
Why the Kingdom Tower is truly awe-inspiring is more than just a big building:
7
Schwing Stetter Projects around the world
1. The tower will be home to the world's highest observatory. It will
also have a separate, 98-foot-diameter outdoor balcony, which was
originally intended to be a helipad.
be carried out with a high-performance concrete, but with a
somewhat lower compressive strength. At the top of the second
construction phase, a concrete pump will be installed to take on the
further transport of concrete to the higher floors.
2. The building is so big they are unable to show it realistically in one
rendering. Only elevations and birds-eye views can contain the entire
project. Imagine those construction drawings...
For placing concrete, the Saudi Binladin Group is using a total of five
separate Schwing concrete placing booms (SPB). Three SPB 35 and
two SPB 30 booms are raised along with the building to be used by the
contractor's team for placing concrete up to a height of over 950m.
3. The foundation piles are about as large as a small room at 10 feet in
diameter, and can reach up to 360 feet in length.
Part of the Schwing Stetter order also include over 1,000m of
pumping line for the first construction phase up to 200m in height,
including the fixing accessories. The high discharge pressures and
outputs at these heights require secure fastening of the delivery pipes
to ensure safety.
4. Its shape is functional. The narrowing silhouette has to fight wind
as well as gravity, so the three-sided shard is designed to be
aerodynamic. The taper also helps maximize usable/rentable area. It
offsets the large core size on the lower floors by widening the base,
while the shape also narrows the core overall, making it less spaceconsuming at the top.
5. Its form is interesting for a tower of its size. The "three petal" plan
allows separate extrusions to nudge against one another, while the
profile is inspired by folded fronds of young desert plant growth. Gilllike indentations add another scale of visual intrigue.
6. It's on a plinth! But joking aside, the building does meet the ground
in a nuanced, thoughtful way. Transportation routes crisscross
around it, and the plinth melds it with its urban surroundings.
7. It has 59 elevators and 12 escalators, and five of these elevators
will be double decker. The lifts will not reach the speeds of normal
elevators, as the change in air pressure at those altitudes would
cause nausea. Three sky lobbies will prevent any one elevator from
having to go all the way to the top, eliminating the need for
excessively huge cables.
8. It has high-tech features. A high-performance exterior wall
system, including low-conductivity glass, will minimize energy
consumption by reducing thermal loads.
9. There are super-cool patios all along its three sides. Each side
features a series of shaded notches where outdoor terraces offer
extreme views of Jeddah and the Red Sea.
10. The massive structure will contain 80,000 tons of steel. Parts of
the core will contain concrete that is several meters thick.
Contractor Saudi Binladin Group is using products from Schwing
Stetter for the concrete operations. Two on-site Stetter HN 3.0
batching plants are producing the concrete necessary for the megaproject in order to avoid long drives and potential delays in concrete
supply. Four Schwing SP 8800 D stationary pumps with an engine
power of around 450kW each and a maximum feed pressure of up to
243 bar are available for high-rise pumping of the fresh concrete. A
high-performance, self-compacting concrete (SCC) C85 will be used
for the construction phase up to a height of approximately 400m.
A comprehensive pumping trial on site prior to the beginning of the
project was needed to optimise the concrete mixture because the
theoretical calculation models did not provide reliable results for a
project of this scale. The next construction phase
extends up to a height of some 675m and will also

All hydraulic components are from renowned manufacturers,
with optional load sensing system, the power of engine can be
judiciously utilised, at the same time giving the operator a better
control.
Hydraulic components ensure low pressure loss and high
reliability. Italian hydraulic hoses provides high heat and
pressure resistance as well as longer service life.
Mold board has high wear resistant cutting edge and a patented
overload protection mechanism. To improve the precision at the
fullest shoulder stretch, two guide rails are provided along the
length of the blade.
Operator cabin is spacious, air conditioned, audio players,
adjustable steering wheel, two way adjustable operator seat and
whole new dash board that has feel good features like a
commercial automobile.
Turn table is compact and closed, making it an ideal one to
operate in the dusty environment. Steel material used has lesser
wear and longer life.
Mono hydraulic lever gives accurate control and operation by
taking comparatively lesser effort of the operator.
Bucket operation has automatic levelling system and a dual
steering limit that prevents any impact or damages to the
equipment.
Optional attachments such as rear ripper
and front dozer are available on demand
