We went for a brisk walk, and tried out different sports at the Anchorvale CC and Sengkang Riverside Park. The kids especially enjoyed the mini table tennis. Finally, something in their size! 3 Our Home March-April 2014 4 T hinking big gets you places. Places in both the Singapore Book of Records and the Guinness Books of World Records, to be precise. What you see below is a top-down view of the world’s largest sculpture made from recycled materials. Created by our Ci Yuan CC YEC, it stands at a rather impressive height of 8.8 meteres, and measures 40.5 by 29 metres. Taken at the SCAPE Playspace at Orchard Link, it took a bit of imagination to get it all in one picture! The sculpture was part of the annual National Youth Envirolympics Challenge organised by the YEC on 19 April; In addition to the massive sculpture, there was a green-themed Amazing Race that took over 300 youths all across Singapore, performances, and a green carnival attended by over 2,000. Setting a green world record March-April 2014 Our Home The Town Council saves money with bright ideas W ith small improvements like switching the lighting of our blocks to LEDs, the Town Council has managed to save some $150,000 a year! And the lighting at staircase landings are fitted with motion sensors so they can be dimmed when no one is around. Cost-Saving Initiatives The Town Council is mindful of the need to keep costs under control and have embarked on several cost saving measures. • Installing energy-saving devices. • Installing LED lights at hundreds of blocks in the town. • Pilot project to install solar panels. • Lights in lifts that switch off when the lift is not in use. • Motion sensors that operate lighting in common areas at 50% brightness when no one is around. 5 6 Our Home March-April 2014 Take me home country road After feedback from us, an EUP in recent years improved this link from Countryside Road to Lentor Avenue. The walkway was improved and smoothened, and street lamps upgraded – we feel far more secure using the link at night, now! March-April 2014 Our walk and talk T Our Home his year, the regular walk organised by our Thomson Neighbourhood Committee (NC) was warmer. Literally! Despite the dry weather, we enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new ones on our walk at Sengkang Riverside Park on 8 March. Having worked up an appetite, we ended our walk at the food court at ITE College Central for breakfast. And over toast and teh, we had a good chat with Mr Inderjit Singh about anything and everything. 7 8 Our Home March-April 2014 Sprucing up the estate G ood things are coming to the Gerald-Mugliston estate, bounded by Gerald Drive and Yio Chu Kang Road. The Mugliston Park playground will be revamped to include a new adult exercise area as well as a new playground. More shelters will be built in the park and through the estate. There will also be better footpaths and new street lighting, and better access with a new staircase and foot bridge near Gerald Drive. All this will be done under the Estate Upgrading Programme (EUP), a special programme for improvements to private estates. Beyond the new facilities and aesthetics, major improvements to drains are also done during an EUP, and always much appreciated by the neighbourhood. The EUP at Gerald-Mugliston is now in progress. Some inconveniences like dust and noise are inevitable. But it will be worth it! March-April 2014 Regent Revelry O ur latest Regentville carnival had it all. Educational talks. CPR demonstrations. Pop performances and a flea market. And those were just the highlights. The bustle below drew almost half the households in the estate! There was a beer drinking contest. You should have heard the burps. The shockwaves rippled the pool. T hanks to our friends in the Cactus Sunrise NC, some 70 of us got together for a tour of Tanjung Sepat at the end of March. There was shopping. There were games. There was karaoke. And of course, there was food. Words do their seafood no justice. There was even a surprise birthday party for all of us born in March! It was a cosy affair that spoke volumes of the attention to detail that our NC gives to everything it does. We had a great time. 10/10, would tour again! Touring the Tanjung Our Home 9 Our Home March-April 2014 10 Grand Plans for our L ife in our town has always been getting better. We all see the little conveniences constantly being added – but how many of us know about the big things on the way? Here’s a sneak peek at the URA’s development plans to transform our homes. PICTURE BY URA. Housing As one of the pioneer towns of Singapore (we have the first Town Council!), Ang Mo Kio is a great place to live. Everything is convenient, modern and within easy reach. Aside from the constant upgrades to our existing homes, new housing and new facilities for us all to enjoy will be added. • A redeveloped Ang Mo Kio Polyclinic at Ang Mo Kio Central 2. • A redeveloped Kebun Baru CC at Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4. • A nursing home at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Avenues 1 and 8. • Estate Upgrading Programme for Mayflower Estate and Yio Chu Kang Gardens Estate. Transport For those of us who travel to work each day, big improvements are coming to make that commute faster, safer and more comfortable. • Two new MRT stations (Lentor and Mayflower) on the Thomson Line will allow for faster travel to the city by 2021. • The Cross Island Line, when it starts operations by 2030, will serve as an alternative east-west MRT route. • The North-South Expressway, to be completed around 2020, will shorten travel times between the city and Ang Mo Kio. New housing is coming up in Teacher’s Estate, near the future Lentor MRT. Leisure We already enjoy plenty of greenery around our homes. And our parks, like the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, are simply packed on the weekends. The many reservoirs around us make for convenient, peaceful escapes. And there is more to come. • An extended park connector along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 5. • A cycling network within Ang Mo Kio. An artist’s impression of Jalan Kayu in the future. PICTURE BY URA. Economy There will be more jobs opening up within our town. Existing industrial areas will be upgraded, and some exciting new ones created. • A new industrial complex at Ang Mo Kio Industrial Park 3. • Redevelopment of existing industrial buildings at Tagore Industrial Park. • Completion of phase 3 of the Seletar Aerospace Park. The North Coast Innovation Corridor is a massive development stretching from Woodlands to Punggol. Our Home March-April 2014 12 I f no one’s home when the mailman comes with a package, you’re not going to have a good time. You’ll need to take the postman’s note to the post office, queue, wait...and then you have to carry it back home again. It’s not so bad if it’s a T-shirt in that package, but if it’s that box of tools you’ve been waiting for...no, not good times at all. That’s where the POPStation comes in. A service provided by SingPost, it’s a series of lockers controlled by a central computer. With selected online merchants, you can select a POPStation for delivery of your goods. When your package has been delivered, you’ll receive alerts by email and SMS, containing a special code. POPStations operate around the clock, so you can go and pick up your parcel any time you want, just by keying in the code. There are 36 POPStations islandwide now, with plans for many more. More importantly, one has been installed at the Cheng San CC! Right now, the merchants that deliver to POPStations are vPost, Omigo, Rakuten, Zalora and Deal.com.sg. SingPost is working on making more partnerships. Go on. Buy something and try it out! A new social service office At the AMK 3G Centre next to the CC, the Ministry of Social and Family Development plans to set up a Social Service Office in the next 2-3 years. This office will help administer social assistance, and also help with the planning of social services within the town. Working with our grassroots and other community organisations like the CDC and Family Service Centres, better help will be able to reach those who need it, faster. New conveniences at the Cheng San CC March-April 2014 KB’s Got Talent! V ocal powerhouses. Dancers of different styles. A mini-maestro with his trusty violin, and even Taiji Rhythmball jugglers. We certainly have a variety of talent in Kebun Baru, and they got their chance to shine at our Got Talent show, held on 5 April at the Kebun Baru CC Hall! Our Home 13 Our Home March-April 2014 14 A lot of that last chorus to “Campfire’s Burning” sounded out at our recent campfire barbecue in Jalan Kayu. Our patient grassroots took us through everything from how to set up the fire to how to cook a good chicken wing. Aimed at new citizens, the events was a great success! W ith the help of our RC, Jalan Kayu Zone 3, or JK3, as we’re known on the street, set a new record for the largest balloon mural recently. Measuring 31 by 2.3 metres, the mural took more than ten hours to create, and involved over 200 of us Yipee, Yipee, Yeah! in JK3. While we worked, recyclables were collected at the pavilion at Block 546 Serangoon North Avenue 3. It was our Recycling Extravaganza, and the publicity of our record attempt drew several passers-by – who stopped to help! A new, green record March-April 2014 Making a splash in Sengkang! T he recent opening of the spanking new Water Sports Centre @ Anchorvale brought hundreds of us together at the Punggol Reservoir. Officiating at the launch, our advisers took the chance to get to know us better, paddlers and pedestrians alike. Our new centre will provide equipment and training in kayaking and dragon boating – two more items in our repertoire of fitness in the north-east. The Anchorvale CC will also work closely with water sports organisations like the Singapore Dragon Boat Association and Singapore Canoe Federation to host annual competitions. Looks like it’s time to get a head start on our training! Our Home 15 16 Our Home March-April 2014 A warm welcome for our new friends and neighbours At the end of March, 350 new citizens received their pink ICs at the citizenship ceremony held at the Teck Ghee CC. They all live in our town – so if you see a new face around the block, say hello! March-April 2014 Step by step, toward a better Yio Chu Kang I Our Home t was a sunny morning that Mr Seng Han Thong, together with RC members and staff from the Town Council and HDB, toured the Yio Chu Kang estate. The group was briefed on the progress of construction on the drop-off points at Blocks 604 & 605 Ang Mo Kio Ave 5. Mr Seng also shared with the architects and contractors the feedback he gathered during the recent Home Improvement Program straw poll. On their walk, the team took a report of trees that needed pruning. And so it was done! 17 Our Home March-April 2014 18 The Grand Plan A fter reading about the great new things coming to our town on pages 10 and 11, how many details can you remember? Here’s a little quiz to test your memory – don’t worry if you have to check back a few times, there’s a lot to digest! Congratulations to the winners of the Quiz in the last issue of Our Home: Eddie Tan Lee Chay (Sxxxx861J), Thrisha (Txxxx893H), and Sim Siew Kim (Sxxxx671D). Next Door Delicious I t seems unwise to talk about Next Door Deli, at Block 529 Ang Moh Kio Avenue 10. There’s only so much seating after all, and once you’ve eaten here, you’ll want to keep it your little secret. From rare finds like wok-fried dry laksa to...well, rare finds like bangers and mash, there’ll be something on the menu to suit your taste. They also do chicken in so many different ways it’ll make your head spin. Each one delicious, of course. At $6.50, the wok-fried laksa is delight of spices. Topped with sliced prawns and accompanied by a fishcake and chicken wing, it’s a meal to remember. And you’ll find their $7.80 house burger an enigma, with the variety of ingredients that go into the patty. Served with the best mashed potatoes we’ve tasted in a while. Open 11am to 10pm daily, here’s a bonus secret. 90-cent chicken wings. For now. Go!
