most coveted prizes.
The next generation of sailing stars are being trained in
the Sailing Academy, which offers an extensive range
of training courses overseen by a fully-qualified and
talented team of instructors.

About the Club and
its Facilities
Club facilities now include:
Gosford Rowing, Sailing and
Motor Club was formed in 1932
with the magnificent Brisbane
Water as its racing course.
By the end of its first season it had changed its name
to the Gosford and Brisbane Water Aquatic Club and
assumed its present title of Gosford Sailing Club in 1941.
The Gosford Sailing Club has evolved from an Aquatic
Club in 1932 with two 16ft skiffs to one which promotes
the sport of sailing in all its forms, from junior training
boats to ocean going yachts.
The club is continually striving to provide the best
for its members and guests and as well as significant
clubhouse renovations, Gosford is proud to have
gained approval for a major expansion to its marina,
transforming it into a state-of the art facility which will
almost treble the club’s berthing capacity.

Sailing
Heritage
Gosford Sailing Club is proud of its sailing heritage. While priding
itself on providing an opportunity to sailors of all levels, our club
can rightly call itself the home of champions, with a number of our
members having enjoyed notable successes on the world stage.
One of the most famous sailors produced by our club
is Tom Slingsby. A lifelong member at Gosford, he
started sailing with us aged just seven, developing
his skills to become one of the best sailors Australia
has ever produced.
Tom won gold in the Laser class on the waters off
Portland, England, at the 2012 Olympic Games, adding
that to his earlier five Laser world championship titles.
After striking gold he was given the keys to the city by
Mayor Laurie Maher in front of hundreds of local people
on the grassy lawns outside Gosford Sailing Club.
8 | www.gosfordsailingclub.com
More recently, Tom has turned his attention to the
America’s Cup, forming part of the Team Oracle USA
crew that secured one of the most dramatic comeback
victories enjoyed in any sport by beating Emirates Team
New Zealand in San Francisco in 2013. Tom has signed
up again to help defend that title in Bermuda in 2017.
Among the other exceptional sailors Gosford has
produced are Darren Senogles, winner of the Sydney to
Hobart Race six times on Loki and Wild Oats XI and the
youngest ever to compete in the event 25 times, having
first taken part as a 14-year-old.
Another Gosford product, Kurt Hansen, won the 29er
world championship in 2014 in Ontario alongside Harry
Morton and has a bright future.
Tom Burton is a former junior world champion in
the Laser class and claimed silver and bronze
medals respectively at the 2014 and 2015 senior
world championships. Top of the ISAF world
rankings, he hopes to become the second sailor
called Tom from our club to enjoy Olympic gold
medal success in the Laser.
David Witt is now Sailing Master on Team
Ragamuffin, one of Australia’s most famous
racing vessels which competes in the most
prestigious offshore events around the
globe. Formerly he won three World 18ft Skiff
Championships; the Whitbread Round the World
(1997-1998) and the Maxi World Championship.
Additionally, there have been national and
state successes enjoyed by Gosford Sailing
Club members that are simply too numerous to
mention individually.
Having top-class athletes from your club
competing for Olympic and world championship
gold is a thrill for everyone at Gosford, not least
our younger members. Success breeds success
and inspires the next generation of sailors to take
to the water.

Racing
Program
Whether a supremely ambitious Olympic hopeful or a relative
sailing novice still wet behind the ears, boat owner or not, Gosford
Sailing Club can offer you competitive sailing at a level to suit.
The experience of the sailors may differ greatly and their
craft may come in all shapes and sizes and from all parts
of the financial spectrum, but there is one constant that
is guaranteed: the thrill and the exhilaration that comes
with racing out on the water.
Competitive racing comes in many forms, from the
Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race (the club is proud to
have multiple winners among its ranks) – which is as
adrenaline-fuelled as it gets – right through to the far
more laid-back Twilight Sailing that takes place on
Wednesday evenings during Daylight Saving. Here, in
truth, the post-race beer or glass of wine, clubhouse
banter and socialising forms as much a part of the
enjoyment as does the racing itself.
The club’s Racing Office oversees all racing activities
at the GSC. A comprehensive calendar includes
22 | www.gosfordsailingclub.com
Windward/Leeward and Fixed Mark course racing,
Offshore, Twilight and Short-handed series, Ladies Helm
events and Regattas.
The largest fleet for the Senior Saturday racing is for the
Laser class, which often sees up to 35 off the beach
boats take to the water.
There are separate races for NS14s, Etchells, A Class
Catamarans (sailed by two former Olympians) and a
competitive Mixed Fleet which features a variety of craft
including Fireballs and Vee Ess 15ft Skiffs.
Additionally, the Saturday Keel boats also include
several sports boats crewed by members of our Learn to
Sail program, something unique to Gosford Sailing Club.
Saturday Junior Classes include Sabots, Optimists and
F11s, while Yacht Racing takes place every other Sunday
for Mixed Keel boats in three divisions.
www.gosfordsailingclub.com | 23
Average fleet sizes for Wednesday
Twilights are in excess of 30 boats.
This features non-spinnaker yachts,
though the final event of the season
tends to be a bit of a free-for-all
regardless of sail configuration
and all rules go out of the window
as it presents a last chance for
everyone to get out and enjoy
one of the real highlights of the
Gosford Sailing Club season.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a boat, you can still
experience the thrill that comes with racing. Regardless
of skill level, there are always plenty of opportunities for
people who are interested in sailing to participate as
crew members at the Gosford Sailing Club, all you need
to do is contact the Race Office to register your interest.
Get down to the club early on race day and we will do
our best to find you a place on a boat.
For new sailors, the Twilight Series is the best series to
ensure a position on a boat and meet skippers, though
for those with a little more sailing experience, good crew
are always in demand for the more competitive events.
Enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to learn are
arguably three of the most sought-after qualities
among beginners. There is no substitute for competitive
experience, but new sailors can get a foot up by signing
up for a course at our highly-regarded Sailing Academy,
which has a wide variety of courses available for those
wishing to learn how to sail or improve their current skills.

Regattas and
Event Hosting
Gosford Sailing Club is proud of its heritage and has a rich history of
offering championship racing to some of the best sailors in the world.
The club is highly regarded by those seeking a venue
for regattas and major sailing events and has enjoyed
an excellent record for many years of hosting world,
national and state championships.
Knowledge gained from the many talented Gosford
sailors who have competed across the globe as to what
works and what competitors appreciate also gives GSC
the winning edge as an event host.
Recent events hosted successfully include the 2015
International Fireball Australian Championships, 15ft
Skiff National Championships, National E Australian
Championships, the NS14 State Championships, Moth
Class State Championships and, in 2008, the Laser World
Championships at Terrigal
There are fantastic facilities both in our clubhouse and
on the foreshore and Brisbane Water offers everything
the competitive sailor could want.
The club has a dedicated and hard-working race
management team who have considerable experience
to draw upon and it is this professionalism that enables
organizers of important events on the national and world
stage to feel assured that their event is in good hands.
28 | www.gosfordsailingclub.com
The club also hosts its own regattas which prove to be
extremely popular among our own sailors and those
from neighbouring clubs. These include the Australia
Day Regatta in January and in March the Len Walpole
(Hango) Memorial Regatta, an event run for the first
time in 2014 and which celebrates the life of a muchloved member who was one of the driving forces behind
Gosford Sailing Club’s success for many years.

Corporate
Opportunities
Gosford Sailing Club welcomes the business community, with an
exceptional venue for corporate lunches or presentations. We
can even offer the ultimate team-building experience - time out
together on the water in a fun environment which can either be
competitive or leisurely, depending on your goals for the day.
Taking guests out on Brisbane Water for a relaxing sail is the
perfect way to entertain out-of-town clients or to help staff
unwind at the end of a corporate event or conference.
Our skippers are always on hand to show everyone what
to do so even those who have never sailed before can
take part.
Sailing is a team sport and through this hands-on
experience your group will immediately see the results
that can be achieved by working together.
Water and soft drinks are available on board and a
champagne presentation ceremony on our waterfront
balcony with Brisbane Water as a backdrop concludes a
memorable event.
Our team building exercises are set up to take people
out of their comfort zone, to prove that by working
together and thinking outside the box they can be
successful in completing any project. Events encourage
and foster strong team connection in any type of group.
Our qualified instructors are trained to encourage full
participation and as your group may consist of both
sailors and non-sailors no person will be left feeling
confused by sailing jargon or unable to participate.
If your team needs to sharpen its competitive edge or
let off steam after a long negotiation and really have
some fun, then set them the match racing challenge.
Your group will compete in a series of at least three short
races on our identical Magic 25s.
30 | www.gosfordsailingclub.com
We can also offer a fleet race with a long course around
Brisbane Water consisting of several legs, each a mini
race of its own.
Feel free to enjoy a drink in the clubhouse bar and meal
in the restaurant afterwards (pre-booking essential) to
round off a memorable day.
Even more exciting news for businesses on the Central
Coast is that major refurbishments will make our
clubhouse the go-to venue locally for conferences and
meetings. Get in touch to find out more!

For the mature student wishing to get into sailing, there
is the Adult Learn to Sail Keelboat Course, aimed at
complete beginners and those looking to refresh their
skills. It provides a fun and accessible entry into the
sport, allowing students to learn at their own pace and
provides participants with further opportunity to improve
and develop sailing skills and techniques.
This course consists of a dozen 4-hour on-water
sessions including mainsail and headsail trim as well as
spinnaker handling, in addition to three theory evenings.
Beginner sailors will have a firm grasp of the basics and
much more after achieving their Yachting Australia
qualification.
www.gosfordsailingclub.com | 33
Follow-up courses are available to
build on skills already acquired. For
example, the Coastal Navigation
Theory Course covers chartwork
and delves into the basic plottings
on GPS. It’s great being able
to sail, but it helps if you know
where you are going too!
From there, the possibilities are endless, and any sailor
will tell you no matter what their level of experience,
they never stop learning.
Our instructors can be with you every step of the way
offering support and helping you advance your sailing skills.
We offer a comprehensive training program, from Learn to
Sail though to advanced racing and crew placement.
For details of the latest courses, please visit the Learn to
Sail page of the Club website. For bookings and more

Junior
Sailing
Gosford Sailing Club has a proud tradition of developing young sailors
and offering opportunities to juniors whatever the extent of their
ambitions, be it as Olympic hopeful or purely for fun and recreation.
The club has continued to support this long-term
commitment to the future of the sport with a focus to
increase participation of juniors and guide them along a
sailing pathway to further develop their sailing skills.
Sailing is the perfect recreational or competitive sport
for all ages and there are few better experiences than
spending some quality family time out on the water.
The club has a dedicated team of instructors and a
structured training program and a great way for kids
to get into the water and enjoy the safe, fun and
adventurous world of sailing.
Children are taught all they need to know for a life on
the ocean wave, but with the emphasis very much
on enjoyment, it proves so much fun they hardly even
realise they are learning!
As with our adult sailing courses, all junior courses are
36 | www.gosfordsailingclub.com
recognised and approved by Yachting Australia. These
start with the Level One Learn to Sail program, aimed at
the absolute beginner or novice sailor, which runs over
three days (generally Sundays) during the January, April,
September and October school holidays.
The club has a fleet of RS Feva and Optimist dinghies.
Optimists are a single-hander and one of the most
popular and strongest small dinghy classes in Australia.
At around 2 metres in length and having only one sail
and sheet (rope), children soon learn to master the
technique of sailing. RS Fevas are two-handed boats
and foster teamwork.
Course content for beginners includes topics such
as: Wind Direction, Rigging an Optimist, Sailing Skills,
Rope Work, Safety, Basic Sailing Rules, Launching and
Recovery and Sailing Terminology.
More skills can be acquired
by enrolling on further followon courses and through the
experience that comes with
simply being out on the water.
Having learnt how to sail, children can take as
much from the sport as they wish, either sailing
for pleasure only, or taking part in competitive
events against their peers. Those who show
a real aptitude for the sport are given every
encouragement to go on and realise their
sailing dreams should they wish to pursue
competitive sailing at a higher level.
Many of our members have gone on to
achieve representative honours and many
more compete for Gosford in events across
New South Wales and Australia. It is a thrill and
an honour for a junior to represent their state or
country, but it is an equally uplifting experience
for the club itself.
It means that GSC is delivering on its
commitment to offer a structured pathway
for junior sailors, while at the same time an
indication that the future of the club is in safe
hands as these keen juniors will become our full
adult members, committeemen and women,
instructors, office holders and commodores in
years to come.
There are few things more thrilling for senior
club members than seeing the young
ones being gripped by the same passion
for this wonderful sport that many of them
experienced as juniors. Tradition is very much
a part of Gosford Sailing Club and this love of
the sea is passed down from one generation to
the next.
www.gosfordsailingclub.com | 37
The first step up after learning the basics is to become a
member of the club’s Silverfleet, the junior development
division of the Gosford Sailing Club (GSC).
Each Saturday during the sailing season the club organises racing for junior sailors who are looking to improve their
sailing and racing skills. The classes sailed are Sabots & PJs, both 1 and 2up.
Competition is keen, but there is a great camaraderie between the kids and the older and more experienced sailors
always offer a helping hand to their younger counterparts. Friendships are forged, some of which can last a lifetime.
There are some fun events in the junior sailing calendar, such as the Christmas party in December and an end of
season barbecue in April.
For more details about the club’s Junior Learn to Sail program, visit the club website, www.gosfordsailingclub.com, or call
(02) 4325 7216. For more information about Silverfleet, visit the dedicated website, silverfleet.wordpress.com

social one. Our Friday night meat raffles in the club also
add to the social atmosphere of our group.
Every year we organise a bus trip to other nearby
courses and our annual “Touring Club” trip to Nelson Bay
is eagerly awaited.

Stand Up
Paddle Boarding (SUP)
Gosford Sailing Club has offered a training facility for wouldbe paddle boarders for several years and we are delighted
to be furthering our association with this dynamic pastime,
which has generated such phenomenal interest that it is fast
becoming one of Australia’s fastest-growing sports.
One factor helping stand up paddle boarding gain
popularity so quickly is that it is a universal sport which
anyone can pick up the required skills easily.
Stand up paddle boarding is popular among all ages
which allows the entire family to get in on the fun. It can
be as much fun (social groups) or fitness (races or surf) as
you desire it to be.
It is very popular among young people because it offers
a full-body work-out, focusing on core strength and
balance and, as it is low impact, there is low risk of injury.
Paddle boarding is all about balance, therefore it
basically works every muscle in your body. Not only are
you strengthening your legs, you’re also working your
arms and core. Work out without even knowing it, and
whether you have a six-pack to show for your efforts
or not, be reassured that being out on the water beats
pounding a treadmill or doing sit-ups in the gym any day.

Social
Activities
Gosford Sailing Club members are friendly and sociable and have just
as enjoyable and rewarding a time off the water as they do on it.
Our social calendar is packed with events for all the
family to enjoy and good food and good company
are guaranteed.
GSC members are a brainy bunch and the club’s
trivia evenings not only prove very popular, they are
keenly contested.
Less cerebral, but just as much fun are the club’s
regular Comedy Nights, accompanied by a very
enjoyable meal. We love a laugh at Gosford!
Retro Dance Nights have proved very popular - the
Central Coast appear to have more than its fair share
of John Travolta wannabes! Accomplished guitarists
have also appeared at the club and will appeal to
those of a more laid-back persuasion.
Regular events include a Members Badge Draw each
Wednesday with generous cash prizes, though the
48 | www.gosfordsailingclub.com
winning member must be present to claim the prize.
There are also accompanying meat or seafood raffles.
Each sailing section of the club has its own presentation
night at which members pay tribute to the season’s
outstanding performers.
Major sporting events are often shown on the big screen
in the clubhouse. It’s much more fun watching your
team alongside friends - the next best thing to actually
being there!
The club also has a group of extremely keen golfers who
pay a modest annual fee to belong to the Golfing Section
which enjoys many rounds during the year (generally
every other Sunday) on a number of local courses.
