PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Hi Everyone,
Independent Public School (IPS)
Currently I am working with your School Council on a submission to become an Independent Public School
in 2017. This is a highly competitive process with 132 schools vying for a maximum of 50 places.
As part of this process we will be distributing a brief survey to our parents and members of the wider
community early next week. We ask that you complete the survey and return it promptly so we can
compile the information and include it in our submission. Don’t worry if you can’t answer some of the
questions; that will inform us of where we are now and highlight what we need to do to improve things
for students and parents.
Presently a central Perth office determines how Coogee operates – controlling our budget, selecting our
teachers and overseeing our educational programs. Old-school governance.
Now we want Coogee to be a more vital and vibrant part of the local community. We want parents to
have more input. We want to reflect the needs and aspirations of our students and their families.
Whilst we will remain part of the public school system the benefits of becoming an IPS can be summarised
below.
Independent Public Schools:

Have greater independence for local decision making which directly reflects the needs of their
students and communities

Establish more dynamic and open governance relationships with the people in their communities

Employ greater flexibility in areas such as staff recruitment, budgeting, procurement, school
development days, travel approvals and student support

Take part in regular external performance reviews to provide their school communities with
independent assessment of the differences they are making over time

Have access to targeted leadership development programs to build principal capacity in getting the
most impact in classrooms from autonomy

Participate in highly specialised board training covering all aspects of effective governance.
A school board will be formed to help develop the strategic direction of Coogee with the aim to help
deliver the best educational outcomes for your children.
It takes a committed and proactive school community to be an Independent Public School. So please help
us in our endeavours by completing the survey and returning it promptly.
Thank you.

in the given time. Children will not go in the bush. Parents are more than welcome to join
our sessions.
All children and parents are invited to join our Early Bird running sessions on the following

LIBRARY NEWS
We will again this year be holding “The Great Book Swap” to raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy
Foundation. We had a very successful swap last year, raising $320 for this very worthwhile cause.
I have already asked students to start bringing in their books that they would like to swap, and our pile is
growing, but very slowly. Please encourage your children to bring in a book or two for the swap. We had
some very good books to choose from last year, and most of our students were very happy with their choices.
The day of the swap with be Tuesday 26th July, at lunch time, and the cost will be a gold coin donation. This
is Week 2 of next term.
