GRANDEST OF STAGES
Understandably, Ted Cochran has
always viewed his mother Carla as a
hero.
Ted was in and out of hospitals as a
child dealing with complications caused
by chronic renal failure. Throughout
it, Carla was there, ensuring Ted was
comfortable and cared for. And in 2006,
when a kidney transplant was required to
save Ted’s life, it was Carla who stepped
up and served as the living donor.
So it was especially gratifying for Ted
this New Year’s Day, to see his mother
recognized as the hero she is in front of
millions during the annual Festival of
Roses Parade in Pasadena, Calif.
Ted and Carla represented the state of
Iowa on the Donate Life America float.
In addition to Ted, who represented
recipients and rode on the float, and
Carla, who represented living donors and
walked the route beside the float, more
than 70 florographs honoring deceased
organ donors adorned the float.
“From my perspective, it was the ride
of a lifetime,” Ted says. “I was not only
honored to represent Iowa, but sharing
the journey with my mother was special.”

MY HEART
REFLECTING ON LIVING DONORS
The cover story in this issue of
Connections touches on a subject
that is very close to my heart: living
donors. I cannot read or recount the
story of Ted and Carla Cochran without
reflecting on my own experience as a
living donor.
More than a decade ago I was given
the opportunity to provide the gift of
life, in the form of one of my kidneys, to
Tom Jorgenson. Tom was in desperate
need of a transplant to save his life and
I was a match.
And as the match, I felt a
responsibility to provide Tom with this
gift.
But even with that deep-seeded
belief that it was my duty, it was not a
decision I made on a whim. It required
thoughtful consideration and my
arrival at the decision didn’t come
without significant worry. Looking
back, though, I cannot imagine not
choosing to donate.
As advocates of organ, tissue and eye
donation, we focus a lot of our energy
on donations from those who have
passed.
This is understandable, as those who
have left us (so many times too soon)
often provide gifts—hearts, lungs,
livers, corneas and more—that living
donors simply can’t. And many of those
most in need of a transplant can only be
saved by deceased donors.
But there are thousands who could
benefit from the gift of a living donor.
I hope in reading the story of Ted and
Carla you will give consideration to
the idea of offering the gift of life while
you’re still alive to see the benefits it
offers.

Carla agrees. She says it was an
exhilarating and emotional time...
even if it was a little bit cooler than
anticipated.
“I was very surprised that we were
selected to go,” Carla says. “And when
you hear you’re going to California
you expect sunshine and warm
weather, but there was none of that. It
was in the 30s.”
But the chill in the air didn’t damper
the experience. Carla says there was
one moment in particular that stood
out.
“Again, we were cold the whole time
leading up to the parade,” she recalls.
“We were up early to get ready and
there was no sunshine on the street
we started on. But as we got going and
we turned down Colorado Boulevard
it was one of the most incredible
things I’ve ever experienced.”
The street serves as the starting
point for floats on the parade route
and Carla says, as they turned to
begin their journey, the sun emerged
and she was overcome with emotion.
“It was unreal. We turned the
corner and the sun was beaming,
the florographs on the float were
glistening and everyone in the crowd
was smiling and cheering,” she says.
“I just embraced that feeling.”

The Donate Life 2015 entry “Never Ending Story”
and watched his mother receive the
attention she deserved.
“She must have high-fived
thousands of people and hugged
hundreds of others,” he says.
“Watching her have the time of her
life was amazing for me.”
Carla says she wasn’t going to miss
the chance to revel in the festivities.
“I immediately went to the crowd,”
she says. “I don’t know if I was really
supposed to, but it’s what felt right. I
just hope that the float, and all of us
who participated, left an impression
and had an impact on those in
attendance and those watching on
television.”
As part of its public awareness
efforts, Donate Life has entered a
float in the Festival of Roses Parade
annually since 2004. This year’s float
was themed “Never Ending Story.”
“Every donation of organs, eyes
and tissue begins an inspiring story
that lives on forever,” said Bryan
Stewart, chairman of the Donate Life
Rose Parade Float Committee, in a
pre-parade press release. “In their
passing, deceased donors open up a
world of health, sight and mobility to
people in need. The gifts from living
donors release family members,
friends and even strangers to live
more fully.
“Grateful transplant recipients are
freed to contribute to their families,
communities and future generations.
Through its endless power to save,
heal and transform lives, organ, eye
and tissue donation is truly ‘The
Never-Ending Story’.”
PLENTY PLANNED DURING
NATIONAL DONATE LIFE MONTH
During the month of April, Iowa Donor
Network will be hosting events around the
state to raise awareness of the importance
of organ, tissue and eye donation. The
events coincide with National Donate Life
Month.
As of January 2015, nearly 124,000 men,
women and children are awaiting organ
transplants in the United States.
