attached to her friends that she’d panic as soon as she

impossible to do anything with her once there.
After much conditioning and weaning, she’s finally
able to safely walk away and stand for grooming. She’s
still not what we would consider reliable, but she’s
coming along nicely. The stallion will likely pose the

As for the horses, all are eating well, gaining weight,

to face with this herd. The white thoroughbred mare loves

Dear Friends and Supporters,
Monday morning as emails were
loading, I received one with a red
exclamation point. Now some people
as I’m sure you know, will add them
to any email but I knew the sender
and this was meant as an alert. It
read as follows:
I’m contacting you to find out
whether the NHSPCA might have the
capability to assist with field response
and/or sheltering needs in NJ and/
or NY related to Sandy. The need is
immediate and long term. We are
now, or will be, maintaining by
tomorrow, 4 emergency shelters, and
participating in 3 search and rescue
operations in NJ and NY. As another
storm bears down upon us, we would
like to amass, as soon as possible, teams
for search and rescue and animal care
at our shelters.
We had responded in the
past when Hurricane Katrina hit
Louisiana and Mississippi assisting
part of their survival story as well.
Without you, we wouldn’t be able to
assist during a crisis, we wouldn’t be
able to care for those under our roof
on a daily basis and we wouldn’t be
able to even consider helping those
that we just learned about today that
are out suffering silently in the cold.
Today and every day we are
grateful for your support. We are
grateful that when asked, you respond
as well. Together we are making a
difference in the lives of homeless and
helpless animals here and beyond.
At this time of Thanksgiving and
the season of hope and light, we are
honored to be partnered with you in
this our 140th year of protecting and
preventing cruelty to animals.

in both states at shelters and
transporting animals back here to
safety. I knew if we were capable, we
would again as well. Immediately
several staff members volunteered
to go and assist when asked. The
conditions were unclear and their
accommodations unknown.
Yet
they packed, readying family and
pets, and waited. Calls were received
day and night and all through
the weekend.
The needs shifted
hourly each day which made the
coordination challenging. Shelters
were merged, populations shifted
and then ultimately our staff was
released from the call. Each one
unpacked a bit disappointed but
ready for the next call.
When the call came again a
couple of days later, it was to travel
to Long Island and transfer animals
here to provide needed space for stays
that were arriving daily. Again, the
question wasn’t whether but when.
Members of our staff immediately
began to access how many animals
we could assist, where we would be
heading and what issues needed to
be considered. Two days later, Steve
and Kelly left returning after fifteen
hours of travel to bring thirteen dogs
and cats in need of another chance
back to us. We all eagerly awaited
their return.
Today, the dogs and cats will
become available for adoption. They
will have another chance at finding
a forever home and perhaps sleeping
at the foot of a loved one’s bed. They
have been removed from harm’s
way and fortunately, given another
chance. Today when we look in their
eyes, we will be proud that we have
been a part of their survival story.
Today, we thank you for being a

A big thank you to Attorneys Mae C. Bradshaw and H. Alfred Casassa for
presenting at our second Will and Estate Planning Seminar held November
13 at the NHSPCA! Once again, Mae and Al brought their expertise in estate
planning to our donors and other members of the community.
This free workshop, open to anyone interested in learning more about
estate planning, is full of useful information. Just some of the topics discussed
in our recent seminar were wills and trusts, how to make sure your pets
are taken care of in your own estate plans, how to include the animals
at the NHSPCA in your plans, and other gift options such as Charitable
Gift Annuities. Estate planning is important and sometimes confusing, so
hearing from experts can help make things easier and more understandable.
Are your pets taken care of in your estate plans? Are you maximizing all
your tax benefits with your charitable contributions? Get those questions
answered and more at our next estate planning workshop!
We hope to see you at our next seminar! Is this something that
you’d like to attend when it will return again this spring? If so, we would
like to hear from you! Is there a specific topic you would like to discuss
at the workshop? Would you prefer to come in the morning, afternoon or
evening? What other information can you offer us to continue the success
of these seminars? For more information on how to include the animals at
the NHSPCA in your estate plans or feedback on what you would like to see
at our next workshop please contact Shay Laderbush at 603-772-2921 x116
or sladerbush@nhspca.org.

As the holiday season approached in late 2002,
I was out on my own living in South Carolina and
just started getting into the animal welfare field.
I had recently adopted an 8 week old chow mix
puppy from the local shelter and desperately
wanted to add a second dog into my little “pack”.
I had been enamored by Doberman Pinchers ever
since I could remember; so much so as a child
that I used to beg my best friend Kate to borrow
her life sized stuffed Doberman for overnight
adventures. I knew, of course, that I wanted a
rescue Dobie but not sure how to start the search.
One of the receptionists at the Veterinary Hospital
I was working for at the time had a friend that
ran a Doberman Rescue out of Columbia, SC
and she happened to mentioned that they were
having a very difficult time finding placement for

an 8 month old female Doberman. Immediately
I thought it was meant to be. I completely lost
all sense of reality, disregarded all the important
questions I needed to ask, and drove up to meet
this young pup to take her home. That, in itself
was a lesson and a half. The day that I took her
home she growled at my friend as I placed her
into the car, the same day I also found out that she
had been rehomed 5 times prior to her 8 month
old birthday (now I know why), and to top it all off
the rescue also told me that she had a potentially
life threatening genetic bleeding disorder called
Von Willebrands and that her VW factor was
so extreme that she was prone to spontaneous
hemorrhaging…..in the excitement of the moment
and the immediate connection we had, I closed
the back door to my car and “Onyx” was on her
way home with me.
Now we get to the reason I am choosing to let
you into my personal long list of doggie woes. We
had always had a dog in our family growing up,
and we continue to do so to this day. As a child
our holiday season was typical; full of good food,
good laughs, and a lot of shared family memories.
Our dogs were always part of that. They would
lay down by our feet under the tree, help rip and
tear open presents, and happily greet each visitor
that came through our door with plenty of tail
wags. I realized very quickly during Christmas of
2002 that my conjured up image of dogs during
the holidays was closer to a written children’s
book, then the reality of the holiday season for
some pooches.
On Christmas morning Onyx and I came
trotting through the doors of my family’s home
and took my “regular” spot in the living room by
the tree. She sniffed around, investigating any
wrapped item or stocking for a potential morsel
of food, and all seemed par for the course. And
then…the guests arrived. The first person who
entered the door was not greeted by tail wags,
but by a big old Doberman nose being wedged
into their stomach, and then a look as if to say “I
guess you can come in, but I’m calling the shots
here, and I have my eye on you..” I was a bit
taken a back to say the least, so I then put a leash
on Onyx and became increasing aware that our
holiday fun was turning into a stressful mess for
my baby girl. With each minute of increased joy,
energy, or rambuncious child that entered, Onyx
was showing clear signs of distaste, letting out
a big old bark when anyone came to the door,
heavy panting, pacing, and subtle grumbles. In
a moment of good training and management, I
conceded to separating Onyx into a bedroom
over the garage, gave her a chewy bone, Kong
with peanut butter, and watched her immediate
sense of relief take hold. She looked up at me
(finally with nubbin wagging) as if to say “THANK
YOU, I was wondering when you would get the
hint…now go enjoy the festivities and leave me
be”. I gave her a huge hug and kiss, and walked
back down to the living room. Her lack of noise
from the bedroom alone, made it clear to me that
she was just “not that dog”.
So the moral of this rambling story is that there
are a lot of “pet holiday tips” out there. I’m sure
many more then I could even fit into a small
article like this. However, I truly believe that
my girl Onyx taught me the greatest lesson of all
around the holidays; realize and except who your
dog is. If it’s different then you expected, it’s not a
problem, it’s a gift. Not all dogs have to love other
dogs, cats, or people; if you think about it, we
don’t get along with every person we meet either.
Resist the urge to place your dog in a situation that
may not ultimately be successful for them. Keep
their confidence up and their stress level down.
Remove your dog from a stressful situation, give
them a safe place to feel comfortable with their
favorite toy or treat, help them feel better about
the holidays by playing it safe and stress free.
I firmly believe each “dog person” needs a
difficult dog in their lives at some point, it helps us
be better people and teaches us acceptance and
patience. That is truly the theme of the holidays
anyways, isn’t it? Onyx is 12 years old now, frail,
but mentally still the semi-naughty girl I’ve loved
for all these years. She lightened up a great deal
over the years with a lot of training and a lot of
management; but at the end of it all she is who
she is and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

could talk about it. With my dad on
my side, an agreement was made and
Cherise was coming home. I excitedly
told everybody at the shelter but silently
wondered if my decision was the right
one. I went to visit Cherise in her cage
and she let out one of her high pitched
“meee-owws” and head butted me.
That was it, after 5 long months in the
shelter, Cherise was coming home.
At first, I didn’t know what to expect.
I had antibiotics in case the stress of
coming home caused a flare up of a
respiratory infection. Trying to make
the transition as stress free as possible,
I kept her in my room away from the
other animals until she settled in. My
dad immediately loved her. My mom’s
first impression included comments
on her scruffy, unkempt appearance
and her odd habit of staring at walls.
But Cherise quickly won her over.
The first few months Cherise did need
some rounds of antibiotics for a flare
up. It also didn’t help that Viggo was
picking on her. She was scared of him
and would hide behind the microwave
stand in the kitchen. Viggo would wait
for her to come out and then pounce on
her. Or he would sit outside the litter
box and wait for her to come out so
he could chase her. She was very upset
around him.
When I finally got an apartment and
was moving out, my parents offered
to keep Cherise. While I would miss
her a lot, I knew she was better off
without Viggo and with my parents
she flourished. Actually, she was so
much happier after I left, my parents
would tell me all the cute things she
was doing, and it even made me
jealous! She had turned into quite the
affectionate lap cat. She slept in the bed
either under the covers or on top of one
of them. And I became the bad guy. I
would come home and be in charge of
nail trims and ear cleanings. Of course
I had to trim her nails, but whenever
I did she cried which in turn made
my dad tell me to stop it because I am
upsetting her. If she is upset, he is upset.
Cherise was also not too fond of being
picked up – but whenever I came home
I just had to pick her up (especially to
hear a meee-oww). I was convinced she
associated me with her enemy Viggo.
No, Cherise was not my cat anymore.
She was my parents’ cat. And she was
spoiled rotten, she had them wrapped
around her little paw.
A few months after that I was going
away for a weekend and dropped Viggo
off to stay with my parents. After a 45
minute drive to their house and a 45
minute drive back home, I got a frantic
call from my dad. I had to come pick
my cat up right away. He went after
Cherise. I thought – no big deal, just
keep Viggo separate. Nope, I had to
come get Viggo immediately, Cherise
is upset. I drove all the way back to my
parents to get my cat, who was sitting
on the steps right inside the house,
looking completely innocent. My dad
was on the couch all scratched up from
Viggo and my mom and the dog had
themselves locked in the bathroom.
Cherise was hiding behind the tv and
Viggo was no longer allowed to visit.
Cherise lived with my parents from
September 2008 until October 2012.
She passed away a month after being
diagnosed with diabetes. She was about
16 years old. She had four amazing
years at my parents’ house. They were
her golden years for sure and she spent
most of them sunbathing. She enjoyed
being queen of the house and she
deserved it. I often think about the day
I took Cherise home. The excitement I
felt knowing I was helping an animal
that needed me. Her age did not
matter; all that mattered was that she
was going to enjoy the rest of her life.
She was going to be in a home and be
loved, no matter how long that would
be. The change in her was amazing.
My brother said it best – “when she
first came home she did not want to
be touched or even looked at, over the
years you guys turned her into the most
adorable, affectionate cat I’ve ever seen.
Be happy you gave her the best years of
her life. I’m happy I was able to witness
it.” I recently asked my dad if he wanted
to adopt my one-eyed foster kitten. His
response was “no,” knowing a kitten
would have no problem being adopted,
“I want to save another cat, an older
one like Cherise.”
Cherise will forever be in our hearts
but there are lots of other cats waiting
at the NHSPCA just like she was.
Maybe they are a little older, or a little
shy, or on a special diet, or not good
with other cats. Even though there
might be something that holds them
back from getting adopted right away
like the young, super friendly cat, their
perfect home is out there. In the mean
time they will be waiting patiently until
that home comes. They will be ready to
change their families’ lives forever, just
like Cherise.

I felt like a little kid at Christmas,
getting my first kitten. Instead, I was
in my early 20’s and Cherise was a
senior cat, had no teeth, and was kind
of cranky. It didn’t matter to me. She
was mine and I was taking her home!
I had just started working at the
NHSPCA and had adopted my current
cat when he was a kitten but there was
something different about Cherise. She
needed me.
Cherise came to the NHSPCA in
April of 2008 with four other cats. Her
owner went to a nursing home and the
cats were outside so a neighbor brought
them in. I remember they were all old
and very sick and spent a lot of time in
our isolation area. Sadly, the other four
cats did not make it. But Cherise was
improving and even becoming friendly.
She was aged around 12 years, was
being treated for an upper respiratory
and ear infections, and badly needed a
dental. On June 12, 2008 Cherise had
every single one of her teeth removed
and was then able to go up for adoption.
I was so happy moving Cherise up to
the adoption area. But unfortunately,
the stress got to her and within a couple
of weeks she was back in our isolation
area. She was constantly scratching her
ears and her respiratory infection was
back. She recovered quickly this time
and when it was time to go back up front
we decided on an area where she would
not be stressed out, and she even had a
place to hide. The first day she stayed
at the front of the cage for everyone
to see and meowed away. But the very
next day the sneezing was back. It was
heartbreaking. Cherise was not going
to get better in the shelter environment.
The respiratory infection was chronic
and she would need antibiotics for flare
ups. With her weak immune system
and the stress of the shelter, how was
she going to get healthy? Could we
make her healthy enough to go home?
Would she be adopted?
Cherise proved herself to be a fighter.
She had been through so much; I knew
she deserved a home. At the time, I had

12 Humane Education
notes from Nellie
The NHSPCA Humane Education classroom is a permanent home to many small animals- a rabbit,
guinea pigs, mice, gerbils, a ferret, a hamster, lots of birds and rats! And then there’s me, Nellie the
Chihuahua, and I come in everyday to supervise the goings on in the classroom! But did you know that
many animals are also fostered in the classroom? We are often a temporary home to primarily young
animals who will eventually be going up for adoption. As I write this, we have a litter of adorable little
gray and white mice, a group of fluffy little kittens and three teenage rats that we are fostering. These
animals get special attention, topnotch care and most of all, much needed socialization to become
wonderful family pets. When children of all ages, from our StoryTime preschoolers to our teenage
Junior Volunteers, visit the classroom, they give our foster animals lots of snuggles and playtime! So
if you are thinking of adding a new pet to your family, check out the animals being fostered in the
classroom- you just might find the perfect new member of your family!

Hello, this is the Starfish Club. We are a group of animal lovers, ages 8-13 years old, who meet at the NHSPCA
every month to help animals. We are the animals’ voice. Today we are raising awareness about how cruel puppy mills are
to dogs. Puppy mills are places where people force dogs to breed puppies over and over, so that people can sell these puppies
to pet stores for lots of money. These dogs have no choice and no voice. They don’t have proper medical care. They live in
tiny, cramped cages filled with other dogs. Many of the puppies you see in pet stores come from these puppy mills. The
next time you want a dog, instead of going to a pet store you should go to your local animal shelter, like the NH SPCA in
Stratham. The animals at the NH SPCA have all their medical treatment and care, and they are treated with kindness.
You can see some of the cute dogs they have at www.nhspca.org. Don’t support puppy mills- do adopt and save a life!
If you are passionate about animal welfare, please join the Starfish Club! Information about this club and
other youth programs can be found on our website at www.nhspca.org. We look forward to more actions that
make a difference from these young animal advocates in the future.
Seacoast Braces Supports the Animals
Probably no one in the Seacoast sees as
many kids on a regular basis as Seacoast
Braces of Exeter and Dover, the orthodontia
practice of Dr. Richard Miller II- and we all
know that kids love animals! So Dr. Miller
and his staff, animal lovers themselves,
asked their patients to help animals by
bringing food and supply donations to their
appointments. In exchange, Dr. Miller gave
each child a raffle ticket for a drawing of an
iPod or a free adoption of a pet from the
NHSPCA! Donations were collected all
summer long and in September, one lucky
patient, Clare Blonski, 8 of Brentwood,
had her name drawn and chose the iPod
because her family had already adopted a
dog from the NHSPCA recently. Dr. Miller,
his daughter Emma, the iPod winner, Clare,
and her mom, all delivered a large collection
of all kinds of pet supplies for the animals
at the NHSPCA. Thanks to Dr. Miller, his
staff and all his patients who cared enough
about homeless pets to help them out!
UNH Student Researchers
Test Shelter Dogs
When Erin McNulty, a student at the University
of New Hampshire in Durham and her research
group embarked on a project that involved dogs
choosing which toys were their favorites, they knew
where to find alot of dogs! With the assistance of
the Humane Education department, Erin along
with fellow student researchers Jennifer Wilmot,
Nicole Golinski and Chad Kaminski, arrived at the
NHSPCA with stopwatches, toys and clipboard
and proceeded to test various types of toys on the dogs
that were up for adoption. It was fun and educational
for the students and a much needed break and some
mental stimulation for the dogs! We welcome the
opportunity to help students of any age with projects if
we possibly can and we look forward to the analysis of
the results that Erin’s group recorded with our dogs.
Holiday Vacation Camps
During every local school vacation,
the NHSPCA Humane Education
department holds several one day
camps for ages 6 to 12 years old. We
offer many different games, activities
and crafts as well as everyone’s favorite,
spending time with the animals! This
year, our Holiday Vacation Camps will be
held on Thursday and Friday, December 27
and 28 from 9 AM to 3 PM. The cost
is $50 per day and campers may sign up for just one day or
both. A day at the NHSPCA makes a great holiday gift for an
animal loving child who already has everything! Registration
is online at www.nhspca.org or come to the Learning
Center in person. The animals will look forward to seeing you!
Animals Affected By Hurricane Sandy Arrive In NH

Sandy disaster zone, the NHSPCA was eager
to help. Two days later, our van was, as is
printed on the side, “On The Road, Saving
Lives”. As it left our driveway as the sun
was rising, we weren’t entirely certain what
staffers, Steve and Kelly, would find when

Max and Cali, two of the lucky dogs

On November 15 at approximately
9:30 pm, the NHSPCA Sprinter van rolled
into New Hampshire carrying precious
cargo. Thirteen animals were about to
find a second chance at a new life in
New Hampshire.
After receiving the call from the
caregivers on the ground in the Hurricane
When they arrived Kelly went straight
to work meeting and selecting dogs. After
several hours, ten dogs that had languished
in the shelter for months, were selected for
transport, making room for 10 displaced
from their homes by the hurricane. So, too,
were three cats chosen. Two of the cats had
been waiting, while one of them had had a
home until Sandy came and demolished it,
forcing her owner into a nursing home.
Then the long drive back. Exhausted
already, Steve and Kelly, expected to be
arriving in Stratham around 6pm, but slow
moving traffic through the city continually
delayed their way. At long last, they arrived
and unloaded thirteen very happy and
grateful animals!

Sadly, on October 7, Dolly, the

was to choose dogs and cats that would
make the trip back to New Hampshire and
hopefully find homes quickly. The shelters
in the NY and NJ area are overfull and in
this case, NH is acting as a relief valve.
The vet was called immediately, but
despite our best efforts and prompt
veterinary care, including a trip to
New England Equine, the prognosis
was dire. Dolly’s frail and infirmed
body couldn’t manage; somewhere
along her GI Tract she had ruptured
and she simply couldn’t be saved.
While it’s never easy to say goodbye,
we were glad to have known Dolly and
her bright personality, even if for a
brief time. It’s good to know that she
suffered very little during her last day
and was treated kindly in her last days
and at the end. She was peacefully laid
to rest. Dolly was truly a character
and we miss her dearly.

recover we will keep you updated

to continue to help them with the
support of our generous community.

The newest after school club at the NHSPCA is the
Starfish Club which meets on the second Wednesday of every
month in the Humane Education classroom. At the club’s first
meeting in October 2012, the club members decided to take
action against puppy mills by urging people to adopt from their
local animal shelters instead of supporting pet stores that sell
dogs and puppies from puppy mills. These caring and dedicated
young people wrote a heartfelt Letter to the Editor after
educating themselves about this issue because they feel that if
people knew the truth about where these puppies come from,
they would not choose to buy but instead to adopt. Their letter was published in two local newspapers; The
Exeter News-Letter and Foster’s Daily Democrat. The letter they wrote together is as follows:

Volunteer Notes from Richard
Helping out at the Annual Auction for the Animals
Late summer and fall brought many
opportunities for the NHSPCA volunteers to show
their support for and dedication to the agency.
Aside from the daily responsibilities of caring
for dogs, cats, small animals, horses, goats, and
other farm animals, volunteers were out in the
community, helping with offsite adoptions, and
staffing information tables at events such as the
Deerfield Fair. From August through October,
over 400 volunteers provided 9,000 hours of
service, including direct animal care, foster care,
administrative help, Humane Education, and help
with our Development Department’s fundraising
and outreach efforts. Our volunteers play a
crucial role in nearly every aspect of the shelter’s
operations, and it’s worth repeating that we
couldn’t do all that we do without our dedicated
volunteers. We thank them for their service, and
honor them for their compassion.
Volunteers helped make this year’s Annual Auction for the Animals yet another success. Months
and many hours of hard work by the Auction Committee resulted in a wonderful assortment of silent
and live auction items solicited from donors. Auction attendees were greeted with a beautiful display
of items, all meticulously prepared and arranged by volunteers. Over 50 volunteers helped throughout
the night of the auction, working to ensure that everything went smoothly, from registration to
packing up at the end of the night. It was yet another example of how important our volunteers are
to the success of the NHSPCA. Kudos to all who helped!

An Autumn "Day of Caring"
In September, employees from
Newmarket International and Pax
World Funds came to the NHSPCA
to engage in a “Day of Caring” under
the sponsorship of the United Way of
the Greater Seacoast. These volunteers
worked diligently around the grounds
of the shelter, as well as at our Rolling
Meadows Pet Cemetery, weeding
planting beds, trimming bushes, cleaning
up fence lines, and generally helping
to prepare the grounds for winter. We
are so grateful for their generosity of
spirit, and for their willingness to do just
about anything asked of them. We thank
their companies for allowing them the
time off from work to give back to the
community through their service.

In September, the NHSPCA lost one
of its most dedicated volunteers, Jean
Jackson. Jean could be found every
Tuesday morning, along with her
best friend Betty Wescott, caring
for the cats and kittens. She was
not intimidated by the hard work
of cleaning cat cages, emptying
litter boxes, or doing laundry. She
met everyone with a brilliant smile
that reflected her loving heart. Jean
was not only a cat care volunteer, but
she often helped with offsite adoptions,
and for several recent Paws Walks,
she could be found at the top of Stratham
Hill Park, handing out water to the walkers. Jean was
a bright light for anyone who knew her, and a shining example to all. She is,
and always will be, missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.
Volunteer Recognition Congratulations to the volunteers who have recently achieved the following milestones.
We value their dedication to and compassion for the animals in our care, and we thank them for their service.

2012 Holiday Fund Drive!
Your generous gift will be used to help the many vulnerable
cats, dogs and other animals right here in our community.
Thanks to friends like you, this holiday is much happier
for animals like Abby. This sweet girl was found alone and
scared, whimpering from hunger. Abby was in bad shape, but
today she is healthy and happy with her new family.
Thank you for everything you do to help homeless and
hurting animals this holiday season and all year long!

Dogs are able to see much better in dim light
than humans are. This is due to the tapetum lucidum, a light-reflecting layer
behind the retina. Because it functions like a mirror, it also accounts for the
strange shine or glow in a dog’s eyes at night.

so, she became sick and needed
to get better before she became
adoptable. All the while she became
close to the NHSPCA staff. They
told us they’d bring her out to the
front desk for part of the day so she
could just spend time lying on the
floor next to the office workers.
When we decided to adopt her and
came to pick her up the next day,
the NHSPCA staff member that we
talked to brought her hand to her
heart and said, “Not my Daisy?” as
if she did not want to let her go.
Apparently they all developed quite
a bond with this dog.
That week was last week. We are
very sad to have lost such a good
girl, but we are also very happy and
honored that she was our dog, and
that we were able to give her a
wonderful life.
We enjoyed watching her
become a household fixture. We
can still hear her snoring loudly as
she slept or make loud snorting
noises when sniffing out something
in the dirt. We laugh thinking of
her when she rolled on her back
and made a silly smile by sticking
out her bottom teeth. We enjoyed
giving her tummy rubs and watching
her put her paws over her snout
while getting them. While we were
in the same room, she would often
watch us with curious eyes, trying
to understand what we were doing
and figure out if she’d get a treat.
Sometimes while looking at us, one
of her lips would curl up under her
gums and she’d end up with the
strangest-creepy smile and we’d
break out into laughter.

When I became serious about
adopting a dog four years ago my
wife was hesitant. Was it the right
thing for us to do if our lives were
very busy? We talked about it for
years and never acted on it.Through
those years we had a myriad of
excuses, we lived in an apartment,
our lives were too busy, we weren’t
sure we’d be good owners. My wife
never owned any pet while growing
up and I didn’t know if she would
except an animal into her home
that would sometimes be a little
dirty, a little smelly and potentially
dangerous. We can attest that by
adopting Daisy, our lives became
more enriched and more rewarding
than ever. Daisy taught us to be
better people.
We discovered Daisy at the
NHSPCA. We knew we wanted a
dog that was sweet and gentle but
still wanted a dog that has a little
spunk. Since we were first time
dog owners and because we didn’t
have children and because we both
worked through the day, we knew
that an older dog was probably the
best choice for us. After looking at
several dogs, Richard, who took us
around the facility, remembered a
sweet eight-year-old female Pit bullLabrador mix in a side room that
other potential adopters seems to
have forgotten was there.
I walked into the room, I
thought Daisy looked a little sad,
as did most of the dogs in the
shelter. But when she saw me she
ran and got a toy and showed it to
me. She had that sweet, gentle look
that I was looking for but she still
seemed distrusting. Later I learned
that all the dogs in the shelter were
a little distrusting because of their
environment and because they lost
their past. They didn’t have a home,
a pack, a leader that they could
connect to. They were thrown into
this rescue facility amongst other
dogs and needed to feel safe and
part of a family unit again. I looked
at my wife, and brought her to meet
Daisy. She also thought that Daisy
could be the one. But we were still
hesitant about adopting a dog that
was part Pit bull terrier.
We learned that Daisy was in
the shelter for a long time because
the NHSPCA had to wait several
months to give her previous
owners a chance to rescue her
back into their home. After her
previous owners declined to do

adopting a dog four years ago my
wife was hesitant. Was it the right
thing for us to do if our lives were
very busy? We talked about it for
years and never acted on it.Through
those years we had a myriad of
excuses, we lived in an apartment,
our lives were too busy, we weren’t
sure we’d be good owners. My wife
never owned any pet while growing
up and I didn’t know if she would
except an animal into her home
that would sometimes be a little
dirty, a little smelly and potentially
dangerous. We can attest that by
adopting Daisy, our lives became
more enriched and more rewarding
than ever. Daisy taught us to be
better people.
We discovered Daisy at the
NHSPCA. We knew we wanted a
dog that was sweet and gentle but
still wanted a dog that has a little
spunk. Since we were first time
dog owners and because we didn’t
have children and because we both
worked through the day, we knew
that an older dog was probably the
best choice for us. After looking at
several dogs, Richard, who took us
around the facility, remembered a
sweet eight-year-old female Pit bullLabrador mix in a side room that
other potential adopters seems to
have forgotten was there.
I walked into the room, I
thought Daisy looked a little sad,
as did most of the dogs in the
shelter. But when she saw me she
ran and got a toy and showed it to
me. She had that sweet, gentle look
that I was looking for but she still
seemed distrusting. Later I learned
that all the dogs in the shelter were
a little distrusting because of their
environment and because they lost
their past. They didn’t have a home,
a pack, a leader that they could
connect to. They were thrown into
this rescue facility amongst other
dogs and needed to feel safe and
part of a family unit again. I looked
at my wife, and brought her to meet
Daisy. She also thought that Daisy
could be the one. But we were still
hesitant about adopting a dog that
was part Pit bull terrier.
We learned that Daisy was in
the shelter for a long time because
the NHSPCA had to wait several
months to give her previous
owners a chance to rescue her
back into their home. After her
previous owners declined to do

Volunteer Notes from Richard
Helping out at the Annual Auction for the Animals
Late summer and fall brought many
opportunities for the NHSPCA volunteers to show
their support for and dedication to the agency.
Aside from the daily responsibilities of caring
for dogs, cats, small animals, horses, goats, and
other farm animals, volunteers were out in the
community, helping with offsite adoptions, and
staffing information tables at events such as the
Deerfield Fair. From August through October,
over 400 volunteers provided 9,000 hours of
service, including direct animal care, foster care,
administrative help, Humane Education, and help
with our Development Department’s fundraising
and outreach efforts. Our volunteers play a
crucial role in nearly every aspect of the shelter’s
operations, and it’s worth repeating that we
couldn’t do all that we do without our dedicated
volunteers. We thank them for their service, and
honor them for their compassion.
Volunteers helped make this year’s Annual Auction for the Animals yet another success. Months
and many hours of hard work by the Auction Committee resulted in a wonderful assortment of silent
and live auction items solicited from donors. Auction attendees were greeted with a beautiful display
of items, all meticulously prepared and arranged by volunteers. Over 50 volunteers helped throughout
the night of the auction, working to ensure that everything went smoothly, from registration to
packing up at the end of the night. It was yet another example of how important our volunteers are
to the success of the NHSPCA. Kudos to all who helped!

An Autumn "Day of Caring"
In September, employees from
Newmarket International and Pax
World Funds came to the NHSPCA
to engage in a “Day of Caring” under
the sponsorship of the United Way of
the Greater Seacoast. These volunteers
worked diligently around the grounds
of the shelter, as well as at our Rolling
Meadows Pet Cemetery, weeding
planting beds, trimming bushes, cleaning
up fence lines, and generally helping
to prepare the grounds for winter. We
are so grateful for their generosity of
spirit, and for their willingness to do just
about anything asked of them. We thank
their companies for allowing them the
time off from work to give back to the
community through their service.

In September, the NHSPCA lost one
of its most dedicated volunteers, Jean
Jackson. Jean could be found every
Tuesday morning, along with her
best friend Betty Wescott, caring
for the cats and kittens. She was
not intimidated by the hard work
of cleaning cat cages, emptying
litter boxes, or doing laundry. She
met everyone with a brilliant smile
that reflected her loving heart. Jean
was not only a cat care volunteer, but
she often helped with offsite adoptions,
and for several recent Paws Walks,
she could be found at the top of Stratham
Hill Park, handing out water to the walkers. Jean was
a bright light for anyone who knew her, and a shining example to all. She is,
and always will be, missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.
Volunteer Recognition Congratulations to the volunteers who have recently achieved the following milestones.
We value their dedication to and compassion for the animals in our care, and we thank them for their service.

So
if you are thinking of adding a new pet to your family, check out the animals being fostered in the
classroom- you just might find the perfect new member of your family!
year end 2012

Braces of Exeter and Dover, the orthodontia
practice of Dr. Richard Miller II- and we all
know that kids love animals! So Dr. Miller
and his staff, animal lovers themselves,
asked their patients to help animals by
bringing food and supply donations to their
appointments. In exchange, Dr. Miller gave
each child a raffle ticket for a drawing of an
iPod or a free adoption of a pet from the
NHSPCA! Donations were collected all
summer long and in September, one lucky
patient, Clare Blonski, 8 of Brentwood,
had her name drawn and chose the iPod
because her family had already adopted a
dog from the NHSPCA recently. Dr. Miller,
his daughter Emma, the iPod winner, Clare,
and her mom, all delivered a large collection
of all kinds of pet supplies for the animals
at the NHSPCA. Thanks to Dr. Miller, his
staff and all his patients who cared enough
about homeless pets to help them out!
UNH Student Researchers
Test Shelter Dogs
When Erin McNulty, a student at the University
of New Hampshire in Durham and her research
group embarked on a project that involved dogs
choosing which toys were their favorites, they knew
where to find alot of dogs! With the assistance of
the Humane Education department, Erin along
with fellow student researchers Jennifer Wilmot,
Nicole Golinski and Chad Kaminski, arrived at the
NHSPCA with stopwatches, toys and clipboard
and proceeded to test various types of toys on the dogs
that were up for adoption. It was fun and educational
for the students and a much needed break and some
mental stimulation for the dogs! We welcome the
opportunity to help students of any age with projects if
we possibly can and we look forward to the analysis of
the results that Erin’s group recorded with our dogs.
Holiday Vacation Camps
During every local school vacation,
the NHSPCA Humane Education
department holds several one day
camps for ages 6 to 12 years old. We
offer many different games, activities
and crafts as well as everyone’s favorite,
spending time with the animals! This
year, our Holiday Vacation Camps will be
held on Thursday and Friday, December 27
and 28 from 9 AM to 3 PM. The cost
is $50 per day and campers may sign up for just one day or
both. A day at the NHSPCA makes a great holiday gift for an
animal loving child who already has everything! Registration
is online at www.nhspca.org or come to the Learning
Center in person. The animals will look forward to seeing you!
Animals Affected By Hurricane Sandy Arrive In NH

Sandy disaster zone, the NHSPCA was eager
to help. Two days later, our van was, as is
printed on the side, “On The Road, Saving
Lives”. As it left our driveway as the sun
was rising, we weren’t entirely certain what
staffers, Steve and Kelly, would find when

Max and Cali, two of the lucky dogs

On November 15 at approximately
9:30 pm, the NHSPCA Sprinter van rolled
into New Hampshire carrying precious
cargo. Thirteen animals were about to
find a second chance at a new life in
New Hampshire.
After receiving the call from the
caregivers on the ground in the Hurricane
When they arrived Kelly went straight
to work meeting and selecting dogs. After
several hours, ten dogs that had languished
in the shelter for months, were selected for
transport, making room for 10 displaced
from their homes by the hurricane. So, too,
were three cats chosen. Two of the cats had
been waiting, while one of them had had a
home until Sandy came and demolished it,
forcing her owner into a nursing home.
Then the long drive back. Exhausted
already, Steve and Kelly, expected to be
arriving in Stratham around 6pm, but slow
moving traffic through the city continually
delayed their way. At long last, they arrived
and unloaded thirteen very happy and
grateful animals!

slowly but surely. She loves kids someone her own size.
The Nubian goats are handsome,
shiny and sleek now. They are our
shadows as we work around the pens
and paddocks - curious, mischievous
boys. The chickens are ruling a new
roost these days. No longer getting
picked on, they’ve regrown all
their feathers and happily lay their
eggs daily.
Sadly, on October 7, Dolly, the
aged red mare who was in the very
worst condition, presented with an
acute case of colic. My heart sank
when I saw her down in the paddock
in the late morning. It was unlike her
to waste any time laying down when

they arrived on Long Island. Their mission
was to choose dogs and cats that would
make the trip back to New Hampshire and
hopefully find homes quickly. The shelters
in the NY and NJ area are overfull and in
this case, NH is acting as a relief valve.
The vet was called immediately, but
despite our best efforts and prompt
veterinary care, including a trip to
New England Equine, the prognosis
was dire. Dolly’s frail and infirmed
body couldn’t manage; somewhere
along her GI Tract she had ruptured
and she simply couldn’t be saved.
While it’s never easy to say goodbye,
we were glad to have known Dolly and
her bright personality, even if for a
brief time. It’s good to know that she
suffered very little during her last day
and was treated kindly in her last days
and at the end. She was peacefully laid
to rest. Dolly was truly a character
and we miss her dearly.
As the animals rescued from this
and other cruelty cases continue to
recover we will keep you updated
on their progress. We are only able
to continue to help them with the
support of our generous community.
Anyone interested in helping abused
or neglected animals directly can make

your support.

Cherise's Story
By Kelly Marinel
just moved back in with my parents.
They had their senior dog, and my cat
Viggo moved home when I did. I called
my mom at work, crying and begging
to take Cherise home. She agreed we
could talk about it. With my dad on
my side, an agreement was made and
Cherise was coming home. I excitedly
told everybody at the shelter but silently
wondered if my decision was the right
one. I went to visit Cherise in her cage
and she let out one of her high pitched
“meee-owws” and head butted me.
That was it, after 5 long months in the
shelter, Cherise was coming home.
At first, I didn’t know what to expect.
I had antibiotics in case the stress of
coming home caused a flare up of a
respiratory infection. Trying to make
the transition as stress free as possible,
I kept her in my room away from the
other animals until she settled in. My
dad immediately loved her. My mom’s
first impression included comments
on her scruffy, unkempt appearance
and her odd habit of staring at walls.
But Cherise quickly won her over.
The first few months Cherise did need
some rounds of antibiotics for a flare
up. It also didn’t help that Viggo was
picking on her. She was scared of him
and would hide behind the microwave
stand in the kitchen. Viggo would wait
for her to come out and then pounce on
her. Or he would sit outside the litter
box and wait for her to come out so
he could chase her. She was very upset
around him.
When I finally got an apartment and
was moving out, my parents offered
to keep Cherise. While I would miss
her a lot, I knew she was better off
without Viggo and with my parents
she flourished. Actually, she was so
much happier after I left, my parents
would tell me all the cute things she
was doing, and it even made me
jealous! She had turned into quite the
affectionate lap cat. She slept in the bed
either under the covers or on top of one
of them. And I became the bad guy. I
would come home and be in charge of
nail trims and ear cleanings. Of course
I had to trim her nails, but whenever
I did she cried which in turn made
my dad tell me to stop it because I am
upsetting her. If she is upset, he is upset.
Cherise was also not too fond of being
picked up – but whenever I came home
I just had to pick her up (especially to
hear a meee-oww). I was convinced she
associated me with her enemy Viggo.
No, Cherise was not my cat anymore.
She was my parents’ cat. And she was
spoiled rotten, she had them wrapped
around her little paw.
A few months after that I was going
away for a weekend and dropped Viggo
off to stay with my parents. After a 45
minute drive to their house and a 45
minute drive back home, I got a frantic
call from my dad. I had to come pick
my cat up right away. He went after
Cherise. I thought – no big deal, just
keep Viggo separate. Nope, I had to
come get Viggo immediately, Cherise
is upset. I drove all the way back to my
parents to get my cat, who was sitting
on the steps right inside the house,
looking completely innocent. My dad
was on the couch all scratched up from
Viggo and my mom and the dog had
themselves locked in the bathroom.
Cherise was hiding behind the tv and
Viggo was no longer allowed to visit.
Cherise lived with my parents from
September 2008 until October 2012.
She passed away a month after being
diagnosed with diabetes. She was about
16 years old. She had four amazing
years at my parents’ house. They were
her golden years for sure and she spent
most of them sunbathing. She enjoyed
being queen of the house and she
deserved it. I often think about the day
I took Cherise home. The excitement I
felt knowing I was helping an animal
that needed me. Her age did not
matter; all that mattered was that she
was going to enjoy the rest of her life.
She was going to be in a home and be
loved, no matter how long that would
be. The change in her was amazing.
My brother said it best – “when she
first came home she did not want to
be touched or even looked at, over the
years you guys turned her into the most
adorable, affectionate cat I’ve ever seen.
Be happy you gave her the best years of
her life. I’m happy I was able to witness
it.” I recently asked my dad if he wanted
to adopt my one-eyed foster kitten. His
response was “no,” knowing a kitten
would have no problem being adopted,
“I want to save another cat, an older
one like Cherise.”
Cherise will forever be in our hearts
but there are lots of other cats waiting
at the NHSPCA just like she was.
Maybe they are a little older, or a little
shy, or on a special diet, or not good
with other cats. Even though there
might be something that holds them
back from getting adopted right away
like the young, super friendly cat, their
perfect home is out there. In the mean
time they will be waiting patiently until
that home comes. They will be ready to
change their families’ lives forever, just
like Cherise.

I felt like a little kid at Christmas,
getting my first kitten. Instead, I was
in my early 20’s and Cherise was a
senior cat, had no teeth, and was kind
of cranky. It didn’t matter to me. She
was mine and I was taking her home!
I had just started working at the
NHSPCA and had adopted my current
cat when he was a kitten but there was
something different about Cherise. She
needed me.
Cherise came to the NHSPCA in
April of 2008 with four other cats. Her
owner went to a nursing home and the
cats were outside so a neighbor brought
them in. I remember they were all old
and very sick and spent a lot of time in
our isolation area. Sadly, the other four
cats did not make it. But Cherise was
improving and even becoming friendly.
She was aged around 12 years, was
being treated for an upper respiratory
and ear infections, and badly needed a
dental. On June 12, 2008 Cherise had
every single one of her teeth removed
and was then able to go up for adoption.
I was so happy moving Cherise up to
the adoption area. But unfortunately,
the stress got to her and within a couple
of weeks she was back in our isolation
area. She was constantly scratching her
ears and her respiratory infection was
back. She recovered quickly this time
and when it was time to go back up front
we decided on an area where she would
not be stressed out, and she even had a
place to hide. The first day she stayed
at the front of the cage for everyone
to see and meowed away. But the very
next day the sneezing was back. It was
heartbreaking. Cherise was not going
to get better in the shelter environment.
The respiratory infection was chronic
and she would need antibiotics for flare
ups. With her weak immune system
and the stress of the shelter, how was
she going to get healthy? Could we
make her healthy enough to go home?
Would she be adopted?
Cherise proved herself to be a fighter.
She had been through so much; I knew
she deserved a home. At the time, I had

I was working for at the time had a friend that
ran a Doberman Rescue out of Columbia, SC
and she happened to mentioned that they were

an 8 month old female Doberman.

Dear Friends and Supporters,
Monday morning as emails were
loading, I received one with a red
exclamation point. Now some people
as I’m sure you know, will add them
to any email but I knew the sender
and this was meant as an alert. It
read as follows:
I’m contacting you to find out
whether the NHSPCA might have the
capability to assist with field response
and/or sheltering needs in NJ and/
or NY related to Sandy. The need is
immediate and long term. We are
now, or will be, maintaining by
tomorrow, 4 emergency shelters, and
participating in 3 search and rescue
operations in NJ and NY. As another
storm bears down upon us, we would
like to amass, as soon as possible, teams
for search and rescue and animal care
at our shelters.
We had responded in the
past when Hurricane Katrina hit
Louisiana and Mississippi assisting
part of their survival story as well.
Without you, we wouldn’t be able to
assist during a crisis, we wouldn’t be
able to care for those under our roof
on a daily basis and we wouldn’t be
able to even consider helping those
that we just learned about today that
are out suffering silently in the cold.
Today and every day we are
grateful for your support. We are
grateful that when asked, you respond
as well. Together we are making a
difference in the lives of homeless and
helpless animals here and beyond.
At this time of Thanksgiving and
the season of hope and light, we are
honored to be partnered with you in
this our 140th year of protecting and
preventing cruelty to animals.

in both states at shelters and
transporting animals back here to
safety. I knew if we were capable, we
would again as well. Immediately
several staff members volunteered
to go and assist when asked. The
conditions were unclear and their
accommodations unknown.
Yet
they packed, readying family and
pets, and waited. Calls were received
day and night and all through
the weekend.
The needs shifted
hourly each day which made the
coordination challenging. Shelters
were merged, populations shifted
and then ultimately our staff was
released from the call. Each one
unpacked a bit disappointed but
ready for the next call.
When the call came again a
couple of days later, it was to travel
to Long Island and transfer animals
here to provide needed space for stays
that were arriving daily. Again, the
question wasn’t whether but when.
Members of our staff immediately
began to access how many animals
we could assist, where we would be
heading and what issues needed to
be considered. Two days later, Steve
and Kelly left returning after fifteen
hours of travel to bring thirteen dogs
and cats in need of another chance
back to us. We all eagerly awaited
their return.
Today, the dogs and cats will
become available for adoption. They
will have another chance at finding
a forever home and perhaps sleeping
at the foot of a loved one’s bed. They
have been removed from harm’s
way and fortunately, given another
chance. Today when we look in their
eyes, we will be proud that we have
been a part of their survival story.
Today, we thank you for being a

still not what we would consider reliable, but she’s

As for the horses, all are eating well, gaining weight,
and feeling better. They weren’t too sure about us at first
but have gotten into their routines and are getting used to
grooming and handling. There are still plenty of challenges
to face with this herd. The white thoroughbred mare loves
attention and naps while being groomed. She’s very sweet.
