The Beginning of A New Year
July at KUMC
Welcome to all of the interns as we begin the new year with July 1st. Of course, this
July 1st is a Sunday, so we will be preparing
as much as possible to prevent major log in
issues and other weekend issues. It is likely
most of the residents will be here for most of
the day on that Sunday! One of our goals
this year is to facilitate communication with
the residents, so the reason for restarting the
newsletter. We will try to provide an edition
each month in order to facilitate reminders for
events, as well as different policies that we
may sometimes forget.
July is an exciting and scary time for us
all. New seniors are trying to learn how to
see 16 instead of 8 patients. New interns are
trying to get used to the title of doctor and
remember the basics of electrolytes replacement. We all remember our July 1sts as a
second year and an intern. Those are the
days you will still hear us tell stories about.
Just remember that you are not in this alone.
The rest of us have all been there.
The great thing about an academic
medical center, is that we have resources to
help us in this time of transition. Do not be
afraid to seek help when you need it most!
As your new chief residents, we are also
transitioning and trying to figure out our new
place. Please let us know if you have any
issues or concerns that we can help you all
with! We are excited for this new year!

This year we are going to start something new. You will be assigned a chief resident in addition to your assigned program
director. Our goal is for you to have a “go
to” person whenever you need assistance.
The chief resident on call will still work on
after hours issues, as well as your specific site
chief will deal with site issues. This, of course,
does not mean that you cannot come to any
of us with issues, but rather gives you a specific person to talk to if you are unsure how to
deal with any issues.
Your chief resident is assigned based on
your program director assignment:

Dr. Broxterman’s residents will be spread
out between the 4 chief residents, we will let

Liaison Committee
At the beginning of the academic year,
we will be electing new members to
the liaison committee. Each class will
elect 2 representatives to bring issues
to the chief residents and program
directors at these monthly committee
meetings.

Graduation Requirements
Schedule Changes
ABIM has several graduation requirements for those who are sitting for the Board
Exam. Remember to keep these in mind
throughout your three years at KU, so that
you do not have to be scrambling at the last
minute to get these all completed.
ABIM does not specify a minimum number of procedures, but does expect compentency in each of the below. The goal is that
each resident is an active participant for five
or more times.
Able to perform safely and competently:
- ACLS
- Drawing venous blood
- Drawing arterial blood
- Pap smear and endocervical culture
- Placing a peripheral venous line
There are a few changes from previous
years that we wanted you all to be aware of:
Able to know, understand, and explain
- Abdominal paracentesis
- Arterial line placement
- Arthrocentesis
- Central venous line placement
- Electrocardiogram interpretation
- Incision and drainage of an abscess
- Lumbar puncture
- Nasogastric intubation
- Pulmonary artery catheter placement
- Thoracentesis
2 VA MODs on weekends
- MOD 1 wears pager
- MOD 2 helps out
Fewer consult months
- No repeating specialties
- Ambulatory blocks will provide further experience in outpatient subspecialtiess
VCON
- 2 separate weeks
- Likely Gen Med Consults 1 week and anesthesia/subspecialty other week
- During this time:
----Anesthesia prelims go to pain clinic
----Radiology prelims go to radiology
----Opthalmology prelims go to ophtho
----Dermatology prelims go to derm
KU Renal
- Will take home call like Med 4
Rememder
- You need >30%th percentile on the ITE
to have an elective
- If you are <40th percentile on the ITE,
you are required to have a board review
month 4th year

Resident Bio: Sonia Castillo
I moved to Kansas City in 2009, when my husband
started his residency in OB/GYN. We both come from
Nicaragua (a small and beautiful country in Central
America), where we attended medical school. In my
country, we do 6 years of medical school and then we
work as PCP for 1 year in an underserved area, in
order to get our medical degree. In my case, I worked
for a year with HIV patients (considered an underserved population in Nicaragua), before getting my
diploma. During med school, I also did some research
about respiratory function impairment in gold miners.
We fell in love with KC since we moved. The kindness
of its people, the diversity of things you can do in this
“small big city” and all the good food (especially the
best barbecue) makes KC a great place to live in.
Sarah Stolte
After completing two undergrad degrees, medical school, and now excited to start a residency at KU, I was
recently called a jayhawk to the
power of three. And I wouldn’t have it
any other way! I was born and raised
in Olathe, KS but always felt a special
connection to KU since my grandpa
taught at the university and we spent
all our holidays on University Drive, at
their house. I now live in Overland
Park with my husband and we keep
busy running after our two boys. Our
oldest, my stepson, just finished up first
grade and the baby just turned two.
Never a dull moment!
ACLS/BLS
Make sure your ACLS/BLS certification
is up to date. To work at both KU and
the KCVA, it is a requirement. You
have to recertify every 2 years. Both
Gerri and Stephanie need a copy of
each. If you need to renew, you can
attend a class at the KCVA. Contact
Stephanie Rodriguez

Jared Elliott
I was born and raised in Kansas,
spending most of my childhood in
Wichita. I went to Wichita State University and then Chiropractic School in
KC before beginning Medical School.
I have a wonderful wife named
Melissa, and a beautiful daughter
named Reese who is almost 2. When
I’m not spending my free time chasing
after my daughter, I am a die-hard KU
sports fan and movie geek.

Final ACP Abstracts are due back to
the program director that looked over
them by June 22nd. You will find out
by July 13th who will present at the
Plenary Session.
