BIG QUESTION
WWW.LIGERWORLD.COM
How Many Ligers
Exist in the World?
All the ligers in the world are living in captivity. None
of these ligers live in the wild. Ligers are a result of a
cross breeding program in between a male lion and
female tiger. Since all of these ligers are living in
captivity, it can be highly easier to evaluate exactly
how many ligers exist in the world. However, there are
some conflicting reports about the exact numbers of
ligers.
According to the most recent reports e.g. Xinhua news
agency China, there are only 8 ligers in the world. But
this is not true at all. One report in 2008, published in
the Daily sun stated that there are nearly 100 ligers
living in the world. Normally, all the news agencies
and even the animal welfare organization says that the
numbers of ligers living in the world are around 20 to
30. Which report should we trust then?
Ligerworld.com has conducted a survey and found that
the exact numbers of ligers are near to 100.
Alone in United States, there are about 30 ligers
in the world. In China, there are about 20 ligers
living there. These two countries make up
around 50 ligers. Russia, Korea, Germany,
England, Italy, South Africa and France all have
more than 2 ligers each in their zoos. A graph
below shows the numbers of ligers in the world

HISTORY OF
LIGERS
Ligers have a very rich history. At least they are
almost 2 centuries old in terms of their historical
records. The data indicates that the first liger ever
born in the world was during 1824. All of these
ligers were the parts of the intentional breeding
programs. The experimenters just wanted to check
about different possibilities. The result came in the
form of ligers and it would have satisfied them to
a certain extent.
The reports also indicated that the first liger in the
This would also indicate the fact that this would
have happened under the ruling of the British in
India. It is not possible because of the basic fact
that tigers and lions have never shared any
territory in the world. At least it indicates that
the concept was there and people were actually
aware of the fact that what would result from a

Skeletons of big cats have been founds which
are believed to be as big as ligers. The Great
American Lions and Saber Toothed Tigers are
very common examples. They also weighed
more than 1000 pounds. One school of thought
suggests that it is highly possible that one of
the species might would have been ligers and
ligers did have existed millions of years ago.

SPEED OF THE
LIGERS
There are conflicting reports about the speed of the ligers. But this even these
conflicting evidences confirm that ligers are capable of speeding from 40 to 50
miles per hour. A liger expert Dr. Bhagavan Antle, who has an experience of
more numbers of ligers including world’s famous liger Hercules, says that
ligers capable of speeding up to 50 miles per hour. He says that despite having
huge body, the overall body structure of the liger is built to support the weight
and speed of the ligers. Ligers are very fast. Even tigers are as fast as 50 miles
per hour.
However, Dr. Antle has once also stated that one of his liger named as Samson
was capable of running 60 miles per hour. This is a very fast speed for a liger.
If this speed is correct, this can make the liger the second fastest mammal on
earth as well after Cheetah. Ligerworld.com has evaluated the speed of
different mammals as shown in the chart below:

LIGERS: MANE &
MANELESS
Ligers are the hybrids of male lions and female tigers.

WORLD’S FIVE
BIGGEST LIGERS
SHASTA THE LIGER (LIGERWORLD’S 5 GREATEST)
Shasta a female liger from United States have a big name. She has earned this
cliché of being biggest because of her biggest age record. Shasta holds the
record for living more than 24 years. Shasta has also proved wrong many
speculators who speculate that ligers do not live long.
Hercules the Liger (LIGERWORLD’S 5 GREATEST)
Hercules is a male liger that lives at world’s famous Parrot Jungle Island at
Florida in United States. Hercules is one of the world’s most famous liger in
the world. Hercules weighs more than 900 pounds. This weight makes him the
world’s biggest non-obese liger. Hercules’s cliché of being greatest is on the

Sinbad the Liger (LIGERWORLD’S 5 GREATEST)
Sinbad the liger is a brother of Hercules and it also lives at the Parrot Jungle
Island at Florida in United States. Sinbad is also among world’s greatest liger

Rocky the Liger (LIGERWORLD’S 5 GREATEST)
Rocky is one of the most ferocious liger in the world. No one dares to go
inside its cage; even if someone dares to he will probably kill that person. He
has already killed one of its trainers. Rocky’s ferocious behavior is because of
his poor manhandling and ill-treatment by its previous owners.
5 BIGGEST TRAITS
OF LIGERS
First of all ligers are the biggest cat species in
the world. They weigh more than any other
cat. Their highest weight ever recorded is
1600 pounds.
Secondly, ligers are also the biggest carnivore
animals in the world. Bears might be key
contender but they are omnivores. Ligers in a
one single sitting is capable of eating more
than 100 pounds.
Fifth, ligers are easier to tame and train than
tigers and lions. Male lions when they grow
older they become ferocious. Ligers on the
Third, ligers are very long in their lengths as
well. Among the big cats tigers are usually
considered long. But ligers are as long as 12
to 13 feet. Therefore, their length even also
makes them the biggest as well.
Fourth, ligers are so huge and big, but yet
they are very fast as well. Ligers are as fast as
50 miles per hours. And even some sources
indicate them that they run as fast as 60 miles
per hour.
