Shawna Haynie Receives Prestigious Newton Excellence In Education Award Shallowater 6th Grader Awarded Boys

Shawna Haynie has received the honor of being named one of six
recipients of the 2015
Newton Excellence in
Education Award from the
Beaumont
Foundation.
Mrs. Haynie earnestly
teaches Algebra 1 to the
freshman class at Shallowater High School.
Haynie has been a vital
part of the education team
at SHS having begun her
career with SISD. She has
been an outstanding teacher
for 23 years in the District.
In order to receive this
award, Haynie was nominated by her SHS colleagues.
Following her nomination, an essay was submitted to the Beaumont Board
of Directors, along with
letters of recommendation.
An honorary gala will be
held on May 13 at 6:00
p.m. at the MckenzieMerket Alumni Center on
the Texas Tech University
campus to celebrate Mrs.
Haynie, and the other five
their awards for excellence.

at the 3rd Annual Communities In Schools of
the South Plains Crimson
Gala held Thursday, February 26 at the Lubbock
Memorial Civic Center.
Following nominations
for both the district and
the volunteers, the CIS
Administrative team proceeded in selecting a
school district and outstanding individuals that
excel in supporting, advancing, and embodying
the work of Communities
In Schools in advocating
for students and families.

The 7th Annual Peace.Love.Mud Volleyball Tournament will be
held on Saturday, June 13th, 2015 at Buffalo Springs Lake!
This down and dirty tidal wave of fun-in-the-sun featured 114 eight to twelve
player co-ed teams and more than 300 spectators in 2014! The tournament’s
purpose is to serve as a platform to raise awareness about the issue of student
dropout and the efforts of CIS to remove academic and non-academic barriers
to education that often influence a student’s decision to leave school. The goal
for 2015 is 120 teams and to raise $70,000 which will go towards sustaining
current CIS programs and expanding to new districts across the South Plains
region.

FCCLA Members Take
All The Way To State
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
(FCCLA), formerly known
as FHA, is a nonprofit U.S.
career and technical student
organization for young men
and women in family and
consumer science education.
FCCLA is a vocational student organization that functions as an integral part of
the Family and Consumer
Sciences education curriculum and operates within the
school system, providing
opportunities for active student participation at local,
state, and national levels.
Members of the Shallowater FCCLA chapter, under
the leadership of Camie Holcombe, competed at the regional FCCLA meet in Lubbock on Monday, March 2.
Five members completed
the competition by qualifying for the State Meet in
Corpus Christi on April 9-11.

$5,500 was donated to the different school organizations.

All the King’s Men is the
story of the rise and fall of
a political titan in the Deep
South during the 1930’s. It’s
loosely based on Governor
Huey Long, the infamous
governor of Louisiana. Willie Stark rises from hardscrabble poverty to become
governor of his state. All
the King’s Men is also the
story of Jack Burden, the
scion of one of the state’s
aristocratic dynasties, who
turns his back on his genteel upbringing and becomes
Willie Stark’s right-hand
man. It’s the story of a good,
but misguided man whom
power and money corrupt.

not only the first stepping
stone on the path of educational excellence for the students at Shallowater, but it is
also the place where Kindergarten and First Grade students become authors and illustrators in their own book!
Sheila Burt, Elementary Counselor, organized
guidance lessons with
Kindergarten and First
Grade classes that included
friendship, manners, being polite and kindness.
Upon hearing a story, the
classes brainstormed ideas
and wrote a book together
in each class. The students incorporated not only
the lesson, but they were
the author and illustrator.
The students wrote a
rough draft, final copy
and illustrated the pictures
and anxiously awaited for
the final copies to be delivered after sending the
books to the publisher.
The books were a BIG
hit when they were de-
livered and the students
and parents love them!

and 8th Grade bands
traveled to Coronado High School for
the UIL competition.
Both bands performed
front of three judges for
their concert, then in
front of a different set
of three judges for the
Sight-Reading portion
of the contest. During
this time, they have only
one opportunity to play a
piece of music that they
have never seen or heard
before. This tests their
music reading skills
for the judges to score.
The 7th Grade band
is conducted by Kyle
Billett and performed
three pieces including
“Honor Roll March”
by John Edmondson,
“Maesong” by William Owens, and “Pinnacle” by Rob Grice.
The 8th Grade band
is led by Tammy Summersgill and performed
“España Cañi” by Marquina Narro, “Mosswood Lullaby” by Brian
Beck, and “Üsküdar”
by Robert W. Smith
and Michael Story for
their three selections.
Both the 7th and 8th
Grade bands received a
division 1 from all six
judges, earning them
the
“Sweepstakes”
award.
This is the
highest honor that can
be achieved at UIL.
of outstanding performance, the Shallowater High School
Golf teams are aiming to make the 2015
season a hole in one.
District play began
on Monday, March 23
with the Fillies playing
at the Tulia course and
the Mustangs competing in Muleshoe.
The Fillies are currently in first place of
the team standings,
gaining an overwhelming 70 stroke lead
above the other teams.

The Mustangs had a

6 for both the Fillies and
Mustangs Golf teams.

Intermediate Students Create Masterpieces Inspired By Classic Artists The
Grind Helping
Common “Grounds”

Shallowater Intermediate
Art teacher, Jennifer Crawford, developed a creative
hands-on project idea for
the 5th six weeks of school
for students ranging from
2nd through 4th Grade.
The project included
diving into and re-creating several different
forms of art during the
six weeks’ time frame.
Every week the students
learned about a new famous
artist and then created their
own masterpiece inspired
by the famous art piece.
The first week revolved
around Picasso’s artwork
entitled “Seated Woman.”
The second week they
learned about Pop Art by
Andy Warhol and continued learning about his
artwork to the third week.
The final week they
learned about Jackson
Pollock’s enormous drip
paintings, also known
as
action
paintings.
Throughout the lesson,
the students of Shallowater Intermediate School
learned more about art
and gained confidence
as artists themselves.

The competition consists
of number sense, calculator applications, mathematics, and science tests.

steaming cup of coffee?
After receiving a grant from
the Shallowater Education
Foundation, Tammy Blackburn and Tammy Roberts
have been working diligently with SHS student employees at Shallowater’s new
coffee bar, The Grind. The
duo states, “We appreciate
SEF and the grant we were
given for this project. We
hope to continue and add
to The Grind every year.”
On Tuesday, March 24,
a grand opening was held
in the SHS commons
area. The Grind is open
to the public, students,
and faculty throughout
the district from 7:458:25 a.m. every morning.
Student employees include: Nicole Islas, Jesse
Galan, Kinsey Homer, Taycee Weldon, Tara Cook,
Taryn Freemont, Saman-
tha Martinez, Sydney Bevers, Abbey Goodwyn, Isabel
Molina, and Austin Young.
The members of The Grind
crew arrive every morning, brew fresh coffee, take
stock inventory, and run
the coffee bar entirely.
Goodwyn, Molina, and Bevers collaboratively stated,
“We have seen the coffee bar
bring more togetherness in
the mornings at SHS. It is a
positive contribution to SHS
and modernizes the school.”
They continue, “We are
excited about the opportunity to work at The
Grind. We feel that it is
teaching us job skills that
we will take with us when
we graduate from SHS.”
The student employees
completed
an
application, participated in an
interview process, and
each work two to three
shifts a week at The Grind.

Shallowater Robotics Team Gearing Up For Action
The robot is complete, a
strategy is in place, and
the Shallowater Robotics team is ready to dominate
the
competition.
With a time frame of only
six weeks to build the robot,
members of the team finalized and perfected their six
foot tall project that moves,
picks up and stacks totes, and
carries them back across the
room to their designated area.
The team competes at
the Lubbock Civic Center on March 26-28 against
47 teams from across the
nation, and a few teams
from
other
countries.
Matches begin Friday at
9 a.m., and will continue
through the day. The Saturday matches will begin
at 9 a.m. and will continue
through noon. If the Shallowater team qualifies for
the final rounds, they will
compete Saturday afternoon.

Fillies Softball Ready To Dominate District
The Shallowater Fillies are
11-11 with two games to play
before starting District competition on Friday, April 3rd.
The Fillies went 1-5 in the
Snyder Tournament with hard
fought losses to Fort Stockton,
Midland High, Abilene Cooper, Randall and Snyder. The
fillies beat Midland Christian
16-5 behind strong pitching
from Taylor Tetens. Chelsea Turner went 2 of 3 with 4
RBI’s. Taylor Tetens was 2
of 3 with 3 runs and 2 RBI’s.
On March 17th the Fillies
traveled to Borger where the
Varsity was victorious with a
late rally to win 3-2. Taylor
Tetens pitched a one hitter with
8 Strikeouts. Tetens went 2
of 3 at bat with one RBI. The
JV won 9-7 behind winning

Shallowater Mustangs pitcher, Ryan Kotulek a junior
at SHS, was named Diamond Pro Class 3A pitcher
of the week on March 18.
When Ryan isn’t dominating
on the mound, he is covering
3rd base for the Mustangs.
Kotulek’s great performances on the baseball
diamond has caught the eye
of Texas Tech’s baseball
scouts. Kotulek has since
verbally committed to join
the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Bringing many attributes
to the Mustangs baseball
program, Head Coach Steve
Biera states, “Ryan commands the zone, and lets
his defense make plays.”
Looking forward to the
rest of the Mustangs season, the team will begin
district play on Friday,
March 28 facing Dimmitt.
Sheree Satterwhite, daughter
of Robin and Lori Satterwhite, recently was honored
with receiving the Good
Citizen Award from The
Daughters of the American
Revolution. She was one of
12 recipients to receive the
award.
These 12 young
seniors were selected from
students all around the South
Plains who had applied for
this honor. Satterwhite had
to complete an application,
include a transcript, write
an essay, and have three
letters of recommendation.
The award was presented during a special ceremony held at the Lubbock
Women’s Club on Feb. 18.
The top three seniors
from the 12 recipients
who received the Good
Citizenship Award were
also each given a scholarship. Sheree received the
third place scholarship.
