THE PRIDE PAGE 12 October 10, 2014 Shallowater Students Have Success At South Plains Fair Students from Shallowater ISD, ranging from preK through senior grade levels, participated and competed at the 97th annual South Plains Fair in a variety of categories. The local 4-H Club entered various projects and goods in the Youth Division. Entries from counties across the South Plains make up the youth division categories of baked goods, canning, crafts and many more. The Shallowater 4-H Club members won second place in overall points. Category winners were: Cutter Bishop, 2nd, cinnamon rolls; Khaki Bishop, 2nd, tortillas and 3rd, bundt cake. Taylor Everitt, 3rd, Youth High-Point Individual, Best of Show for BBQ sauce; nine 1st place awards for categories in: banana bread, scrapbook page, pot holder, applique, plaster art, scarf, macramé; four 2nd place awards for events in wind chime, banana cookies, candy, and pickles; 3rd, zucchini bread and two honorable mention awards in drawing and weaving. Jacob Everitt, two 1st place awards in wind chime and bread and butter pickles; three 2nd places in banana bread, muffins, and plaster art; two 3rd places in scrapbook pages and Snickerdoodle cookies and honorable mention with his sugar cookies. A.J. Kendrick grabbed Best of Show for his black and white photography skills; three 1st place awards for open crop, black and white animal photography, and marine color photography; two 2nd place awards in coffee cake and antique kitchen wood; and one 3rd place for his human interest color photography. David Kendrick was awarded four 1st place awards in cucumbers, cake, black and white architect photography, and color animal photography; two 2nd place awards in color digital photography and black and white interest photography; two 3rd place awards in chocolate chip cookies and color floral photography; honorable mention in color architectural photography. Bella Mason placed 3rd for her color human interest photography and Colton Outland placed 1st with his cake. Camey Powers grabbed three 1st place awards in apron, brownies and tie blanket categories; 3rd place in pot holder and honorable mention in the bracelt event. Shallowater students also competed and participated in the Livestock Show at the South Plains Fair. Participants in the swine division were: Landon Miller, 2nd place Chester; Hayden Miller, 7th place York; Brennon Miller, 1st place Duroc and Breed Champion Duroc. Lindsey Lamkin, 1st Yorkshire, 2nd Cross, and 4th place Hampshire. Participants in the Steer division were: Slade Chisum, 2nd place Hereford Steer and Reserve Hereford Steer. MACI SPARKMAN Maci is the daughter of David and Kellye Sparkman and has one older brother, Zach. She is very involved at Shallowater High School and is in the youth leadership team at First Baptist Church in Shallowater. She is a member of National Honor Society, she is the basketball team manager, and is a varsity cheerleader. She enjoys hanging out with friends, spending time with family, and traveling. She is planning to attend either West Texas A&M University or Lubbock Christian University. Maci says, “After attending schools in other small towns, I feel very blessed to be a part of SHS and I am so honored to have been chosen as a nominee.” Maci will be escorted by Bryan Hall, son of Mike and Lora Hall. TATUM CAGLE Tatum is the daughter of John and Lisa Cagle and has a brother, Jake, who is in the 8th grade at Shallowater Middle School. She is a varsity cheerleader and a member of National Honor Society at Shallowater High School and has been very active throughout her time at SHS. Tatum enjoys working on the family ranch in her spare time and doing anything outdoors. Upon graduating from Shallowater High School in May, Tatum plans to attend OSU or Texas Tech University with plans to obtain a law degree. Tatum says, “Being nominated for homecoming court is a huge honor. Thank you for nominating me.” Tatum will be escorted by Preston Scaff, son of Scott and Holly Scaff, and Kevan and Sindy Wilson. MACY MCLELLAN Macy is the daughter of Johnny and Denae McLellan and has two siblings, Landon and Averi. She is a varsity cheerleader, member of the National Honor Society, a member of Texas Association of Future Educators (T.A.F.E). She is also an active member of Shallowater First Baptist Church youth group. Macy enjoys snow skiing, water skiing, and spending time with friends and family. With plans to attend Texas Tech University, she will major in Nursing. Macy states, “I am very humbled to be nominated as a candidate on the homecoming court.” Miss McLellan continues, “Growing up, I always admired and looked up to the homecoming candidates. I feel very honored to be a role model to other little girls.” Macy will be escorted by Ran Johnston, son of Dan and Robyn Johnston. BAILEY SAPIEHA Bailey is the daughter of Blaine and Carla Sapieha. She has one younger sister, Berkley, who she is enjoying being in High School with this year. Bailey has been on the varsity volleyball team for three years, is a National Honor Society officer, and is on the yearbook team. In her spare time, Bailey enjoys CrossFit, DIY projects, and making sno cones. After high school, Bailey plans on applying to the Physical Therapy Assistant School at South Plains College. Miss Sapieha has an ultimate goal to one day own her own Bahama Bucks franchise. Bailey will be escorted by James McGuire, son of Robert and D’Ann McGuire. KELSEE SMITH Kelsee is the daughter of Scott Smith and Keith and Kerri Shields. She has four sisters, Kylee, Kynlee, Reese, and Riley. She is involved in varsity volleyball, basketball, track, and cheer. She also competes in UIL number sense and is a member of Texas Association of Future Educators (T.A.F.E.). Kelsee enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, and sleeping in her spare time. She plans to attend Texas Tech University to obtain an undergraduate degree in pre-pharmacy, with a goal to attend Tech’s pharmacy school in Amarillo. Miss Smith states, “Being on the homecoming court is a great honor. I’m so blessed by such a great family who has taught me so well.” Smith continues, “I hope that as I shine others don’t see me, but that through me, they see Christ.” Kelsee will be escorted by Jake McMillin, son of Kelly and Laura McMillin. We are constantly getting involved in projects that teach us that our ac- tions have consequences, and how to display model citizenship. Go to www.shallowaterisd.net click on the “community” tab and select “the PRIDE Online” October 10, 2014 Shallowater Middle School 8th grade GT, taught by Katie Morgan and Melissa Medlin, was approached with an exciting opportunity to design and paint a snow plow for the Texas Department of Transportation. Mia Pena, 8th grade GT student, had her design selected by the 7th grade GT class as the TXDOT came to Shallowater Middle School for a presentation of the project to the GT classes and other Middle School students. GT students who contributed to the project include: 8th grade-Maddie Blackburn, McCormick, snow plow design win- Trinity Cooper Mitchell, Mia ner. Pena’s inspiration came from posters and Pena, Hallie Satterquotes about the late white, Stormie Wilbronc rider, Tom Butler. Mia incorporated a safety message in her design to remind drivers to stay safe as they travel during the winter season. The Shallowater T.A.M.E chapter plans to participate at the South Plains Math and Science competition on January 17, 2015 with a goal to qualify for the State T.A.M.E competition hosted by Lockheed Martin in Dallas, Texas on April 25, 2015. The members of the Shallowater chapter will be competing at the Pantex Regional Science Bowl on February 21, 2015 as well. The chapter held their first meeting at Shallowater High School on Friday, September 19 and currently has 25 participants. Seven classes, containing a total of 167 students, experienced a touch of Mexican Independence Day by learning traditional Mexican dances. A Mexican hat dance and the cumbia step were a select few performed by Laurel Guzman, sophomore at Shallowater high school. Arismendez states, “All students involved in the Spanish course had a great time experiencing a little bit of Mexican culture.” The first academic meet of the year will take place at Texas Tech University on the morning of Saturday, November 8, 2014. Please see Mrs. Redman if you are interested in participating in that meet. Deadline for registration is October 31. Sgt. Dailey from the Marines will be presenting in Senior Seminar on October 17. Placing second in the Premier Tournament, consolation at the Shallowater Varsity tournament, and third in the Denver City Tournament. PAGE 5 Ana Hawkins Represents Shallowater In Washington, D.C. Dear Shallowater Community, Thank you so much for supporting and contributing to the penny war and various other events to support diabetes in Shallowater. I feel so blessed to live in such a generous community. All of the support means more to me than you know. We were able to raise $982.72 through the penny war, and even more through other fundraisers. All of this money goes directly to doctors and researchers that are trying to find a cure for the 26 million Americans that live with diabetes. Thank you again for your support. Wes Jackson, a senior at Shallowater High School, has set a new standard for the Shallowater Cross Country team, although, it is not in the athletic aspect. The upperclassman has created a brand new t-shirt design that the team will be wearing. Wes used a computer assisted drawing pro- Freshman Fillies currently hold a 15-5 record for the season. The Mustangs currently hold a 4-1 record for the 2014 season bringing much excitement to the team and the community. All proceeds will benefit the Mustang Football program and the Shallowater Cheerleaders. PAGE 7 Wildcats What started off as an Idalou lead in the first quarter, quickly changed when Preston Scaff and Connor Smith had touchdown receptions of 4 and 25 yards from Quarterback Chris Contreras allowing Shallowater to take the 21-17 lead into the second half. In the third quarter, the Mustangs scored three touchdowns to add to the lead against the Wildcats. Cooper Ogle also contributed to the second half with a 40-yard run in the third contributing to his 21 carries and 193 yards for the game. Three Mustangs were selected to the Lone Star Varsity Super Team for their week five performance against Idalou. 28-17 Mustang defensive end Preston Scaff made the list having 11 tackles with three of those causing fumbles. Defensive end Andres Castillo added 10 tackles and a sack against the Wildcats. Linebacker Brenton Burgett finished with 23 tackles and two sacks to help tie up the win for the Mustangs.
