Thanks to race announcer David Poteet, and to Georgia Runner Event Timing. Finally, thanks to Mayor Pro Tem Terry Giager for once again announcing the race awards. The City celebrated the end of summer 2014 with the 36th Annual Labor Day 5K and 1 Mile races to benefit the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. With sunny weather and a temperature of about 75 degrees, the picturesque day contributed to the high turnout. This year, both races included chip timing for more accurate race results. This event was again a great success due to the hard work of all the volunteers, runners and walkers. City associates who helped to organize the event included Karen Holmes, Kelly Brooks, Keri Stevens and Juliette Sims-Owens, and City Public Works associates included Harold Anderson, Dwayne Barber, Quentin Eagle, Jerome Gunnell, Demarcus Johnson and Shawn Luttery. Members of Avondale Estates First Baptist Church provided fruit and drinks, continuing their many years of service to the race. Boy Scout Troop 6 manned the water stations as they have for many years. Anthony Calcagno and Ted Waters were in their usual spots providing much appreciated split times at the 1 mile and 2 mile markers, respectively. The following dedicated volunteers were back this year handling race registration, distribution of ribbons, finishing time cards and shirts: Kathy Kingsbury, Bruce Johnston, Melitta Brandt, Mary and Dave Galpin, Virginia James, Kevin Berry, Mary Ellen Moore, and Katherine and Virginia Hudspeth. The City would like to give a special thank you to Alan and Camille Harvey who were unable to attend this year’s event due to the birth of their grandchild, Ella Camille Goodman. Allen Joyce continued their great work setting up the online registration and enlisting sponsors. The contributions of all of our sponsors are very appreciated and the proceeds from the sponsorships, donations and race entries go, as always, to the ALS Association. The association is leading the fight to treat and cure this terrible disease through global research and nationwide advocacy. Congratulations to everybody who had some fun and exercised for a good cause! Mark your calendars for the 37th Annual Labor Day Race on September 7, 2015! The Avondale Estates Neighborhood Watch: Getting to Know Your Neighbors As fall arrives in beautiful Avondale Estates, I would like to encourage all of you to step outside of your comfort zones and introduce yourselves to your neighbors. So many individuals and families have moved into the City over the summer. Please take a moment and begin to recognize your neighbors, their vehicles, whether children or pets live in their homes, and if you have neighbors who are elderly or disabled and need assistance from time to time. One movement and corresponding book, “The Art of Neighboring,” eloquently explains a recent cultural shift in communities: “Once upon a time, people knew their neighbors. They talked to them, had cook-outs with them, and went to church with them. In our time of unprecedented mobility and increasing isolationism, it’s hard to make lasting connections with those who live right outside our front door. We have hundreds of ‘friends’ through online social networking, but we often don’t even know the full name of the person who lives right next door.” September - October 2014 So, I encourage you to take the time one beautiful fall day as you stroll down your street to say hello and introduce yourself to fellow residents. I also suggest hosting a block party or potluck once or twice a year. We have been doing this on our street for about five years now. It is an informal way to get to know folks, and a fun time of fellowship. Let’s all be willing to be neighborly despite our busy schedules, and continue to enjoy the beautiful and safe community in which we all love to live. Please contact me at avondalenw@gmail.com or 404-298-5381 if you have concerns or suggestions regarding our Neighborhood Watch Program. Sherri Dickens Neighborhood Watch Liaison Avondale Estates H News from City Hall Page 7 H City News Second Annual Avondale Estates Tree Walk Shows Mother Nature’s Latest Colors for Fall Mother Nature will reveal the newest colors in her fall collection during the second annual Avondale Tree Walk on Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to noon. Sponsored by the Avondale Estates Garden Club, this year’s walk will include beautiful specimens chosen by the Tree Walk Committee to strut on the catwalk of Avondale Estates. Six local arborists will lead groups of approximately 15 people who will marvel at the trees’ lines and features while arborists point out their defining and unusual characteristics. To take part in this free event, meet at 10 a.m. in the Avondale Community Club parking lot, 59 Lakeshore Drive. A new feature of this year’s walk will be the opportunity for homeowners to ask a panel of experts questions about trees in their own landscapes. If you need more information, please call 404-373-8165. One of last year’s tree walk participants shared this observation on a followup survey: “Our guide was amazingly informative, from a landscape architectural perspective, giving us statistics about the type of tree, its optimal growing conditions, best attributes, and possible uses in an urban environment.” $10 IN FREE DRY CLEANING Just try our dry cleaning pick-up and delivery service. From ghosts and goblins to princesses and cartoon characters, watch the little ones creep or strut down sidewalks with the City’s multicolored fall foliage as a backdrop. Halloween Home/Business Spirit Awards On Monday, October 27, Halloween Judges will roam the City and select one business and a group of homes that show the most spirit. On Tuesday, October 28, winners will be presented with a Halloween Spirit Award. • Residents are welcome to pair up with neighbors to hand out treats to children. Some neighbors set up Halloween tables near sidewalks, which alleviates door traffic. • Keep all candles (and jack-o-lanterns lit with candles) away from landings and doorways where they could brush up against someone. Use artificially lit candles whenever possible. • If you prefer not to participate in Halloween activities, simply keep your lights off and don’t answer the door. Halloween Safety • Please turn off your lights at the 8:30 p.m. curfew time. This will assist the Avondale Estates Police in enforcing the curfew. Citizens of Avondale Estates can help with safety by following these rules and guidelines: • Trick-or-Treaters should wear brightly colored costumes and carry a flashlight. Costumes should be short enough so that they are not a tripping hazard for children. Stay on the sidewalks, don’t cut across yards and only cross the street at designated crosswalks. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the left side of the street, facing oncoming cars. • Parents should accompany children whenever possible. If you are not accompanying your children, know the route they are taking. Talk with your children about Halloween safety. Tell them not to eat any candy until they’re home; all treats should first be examined by a guardian. Adult trick or treaters: If you are going to a party, remember to have a designated driver. One of the church’s special events included making lunches as part of Action Ministries’ Smart Lunch, Smart Kid Program. Nearly 800,000 children in Georgia receive free or reduced-price lunches during the school year, but are without lunch when school is not in session. Through Smart Lunch, Smart Kid, organizations volunteer to make and deliver lunches for those children. APUMC also enjoyed a summertime Christmas dinner called “Leon” (or “Noel” spelled backwards). Singing Christmas carols is just too wonderful to be limited to December! In August, APUMC hosted a one-day mini Vacation Bible School. It was a fun day of Bible stories, music and crafts--and with 20 adults and 15 kids, they had a great teacher-to-student ratio! Last but not least, APUMC welcomes Girl Scout Troop # 3647. The troop will nor- mally be meeting on Sunday afternoons, twice a month. Call Scout Leader Bonny Wilder for more information at 770-4699032. The Avondale Estates Opportunity Zone includes the Central Business District area, which encompasses most of the commercially zoned property in the City. This incentive was important to remain competitive in the region. Opportunity Zone: Economic Development Tool Helping Avondale Estates’ Businesses Thrive The state of Georgia announced in early 2013 that the City of Avondale Estates had been designated an Opportunity Zone. This program encourages new businesses to locate in the City September - October 2014 Pallookaville Fine Foods opened in late 2013 after an extensive building renovation. Owners Kim and Jim Stacy were the first business owners in the City to take advantage of the tax credit. Kim Stacy indicated that the final numbers will not be seen until the 2015 tax season but based on current calculations the tax advantage will be significant for them and their employees. The projected tax benefit could offset the group health plan they offer to employees by about 75-80%. Stacy stressed that the program incentivizes businesses to offer full time employment and benefits. The City will follow up with Pollookaville in 2015 to see the final outcome.
