Dearconferenceattendees,
WelcometothethirdPediatricDermatologyResearchAllianceAnnualConference!
Asweallknow,standardizedtreatmentprotocolsandclinicalguidelinesaresorely
lackingforpediatricskindisorders,includingsomeconditionsthataretrulylife
threatening.Yetrecruitingchildrenforstudiesischallengingandprojectsareoften
underpowered,especiallywithrarediseases.
Withthisreality,pediatricdermatologyleadersrecognizedthatinvestigationscannot
beconductedwithoutcollaborativeefforts.ThusPeDRAwasconceivedasaresearch
networkin2012andwehaven’tlookedbacksince.Nowwithnearly230investigators
partneringtoconduct57studiesspanningseveraldiseaseareas,PeDRAisbeginning
topositivelyimpactthelivesofchildrenwholivewithdifficultandlife-altering
dermatologicdiseasesandconditions.
Thisconferenceistheonlymeetingvenuethatspecificallyaimstofostermulticenter
studiesinallmajorareasofpediatricdermatology.Themeetingprovidesthe
opportunitytolearnaboutandjoinqualitystudiesandprotocolsdevelopedby
experiencedinvestigators.Thesepartnershipshelpindividualresearchers“gaintheir
footing”andenablepatientstoaccessstudiesthatotherwisewouldbedifficult.
Outstandingfacultywillguideourdeliberations.Presentationswillprovide
collaborativemodelsandwilladdresscommonissuesinresearch;break-outsessions
willapplywhatwehavelearnedtoprojectsandidentifythestudiestoadvanceoverthe
nextyear.WeanticipatemorebreakthroughworkhereinTexas!

DermatologyatUSC,sheservesasViceChair,DirectorofClinicalTrialsand
OutcomesResearch,andDirectorofthePsoriasisProgram.
Dr.ArmstrongobtainedhermedicaldegreefromHarvardMedicalSchooland
completeddermatologyresidencyattheHarvardDermatologyResidency
Program.ShealsoobtainedaMasterofPublicHealthdegreefromHarvardSchool
ofPublicHealth.
Dr.Armstrongbelievesthatgoodclinicalpracticeneedstoberootedinevidence-
basedmedicine.Herclinicalexpertiseliesininflammatoryskindiseases.In
herresearch,Dr.Armstrongisparticularlyinterestedintheappropriateuseof
systemicagents,comparativeeffectivenessresearch,andpsoriasiscomorbidities.
Shehasconductedstudiesexamininghownewtherapiesimpactpatients’disease
states,qualityoflife,andtheiraccesstomedicalcare.Sheisafederallyfunded
investigatorwithextensiveclinicaltrialexperience.Herworkhasbeensupported
bytheNIH,Patient-CenteredOutcomesResearchInstitute(PCORI),theAgencyfor
HealthcareResearchandQuality(AHRQ),theDermatologyFoundation,andthe
NationalPsoriasisFoundation.

Dr.Brucknerisdedicatedtoimprovingoutcomesandqualityoflifeforchildren

research.Heracademicinterestsincludegeneticskindisorders,particularly
epidermolysisbullosa(EB),vascularanomalies,atopicdermatitis,andeducating

Dr.KeithChoateisAssociateProfessorofDermatology,Pathology,and
GeneticsatYaleUniversitySchoolofMedicine.Heisaphysicianscientistwitha
researchprogramdedicatedtounderstandingthegeneticbasisandmolecular
pathophysiologyofrareinheritedandmosaicpediatricgeneticdisorders.
Disordersofkeratinizationareaspecialareaoffocusinhisclinicalandresearch
efforts,andDr.ChoateisamemberoftheMedicalandScientificAdvisoryBoard
oftheFoundationforIchthyosisandRelatedSkinTypes.Inhisworkingene
discovery,Dr.Choatepartnerswithreferringphysicianstophenotypepatients
andtoidentifynewgeneticdisorders,employingnextgenerationsequencing
forthepurposesofgeneticdiagnosisandidentificationofnewgenes.Inongoing
investigation,Dr.Choate’sgroupisexaminingmechanismsofspontaneous
geneticrevertantmosaicisminthedisorderichthyosiswithconfetti.Dr.Choate
mentorsMD/PhDandPhDgraduatestudents,medicalstudents,residentsand
post-doctoralfellowsinhislaboratory.

Dr.RichardCollettiisVice-ChairforClinicalandResearchAffairsandProfessorof
PediatricsattheUniversityOfVermontCollegeOfMedicine,andAssociateChief
ofVermontChildren’sHospitalatFletcherAllen.Apediatricgastroenterologist,he
isthePresidentandExecutiveNetworkDirectorofImproveCareNow,anational
networkforimprovement,discoveryandinnovationinpediatricinflammatory
boweldisease.HehasbeenPresidentoftheNorthAmericanSocietyfor
PediatricGastroenterology,HepatologyandNutrition,ontheBoardofDirectors
oftheNASPGHANFoundation,andSecretary-TreasureroftheFederationof
InternationalSocietiesforPediatricGastroenterology,HepatologyandNutrition.
Heisanauthorof115papers,bookchaptersandmonographs,including5
clinicalpracticeguidelinesand3ofthetop30paperspublishedintheJournal
ofPediatricGastroenterologyandNutritioninitsfirst30years.Hehasgiven
200nationalandinternationalpresentations,andisthefounderandmanagerof
PEDGI,theInternetlistservfor2,000pediatricgastroenterologistsin50countries.
AgraduateoftheUniversityofPittsburghSchoolofMedicine,hecompleteda
pediatricresidencyatYaleUniversityandapediatricgastroenterologyfellowship
attheBaylorCollegeofMedicineTexasChildren’sHospital.

Dr.Tomisinterestedinchronicinflammatoryskindisorders,particularlyatopic
dermatitis(eczema)andpsoriasis,andmanagingpatientswhohavemoredifficult

ResearchCenter.In1991,Dr.ZajicekenteredmedicalschoolattheUniversity
ofPittsburgh,andin1998,completedaresidencyinpediatricsattheChildren’s
HospitalofPittsburgh.Shepracticedprimarycarepediatricsfor2yearsandthen
continuedhertrainingasapediatricclinicalpharmacologyfellowatStanford
University.ShesubsequentlyjoinedtheU.S.FoodandDrugAdministration(FDA)
intheOfficeofClinicalPharmacologyandBiopharmaceutics.ShejoinedNICHD
asaPediatricMedicalOfficerinAugust2003,andwasappointedChiefofthe
ObstetricandPediatricPharmacologyandTherapeuticsBranchin2010.The
BranchisresponsiblefortheNIHimplementationoftheBestPharmaceuticalsfor
ChildrenAct.TheBranchmanagesaportfolioofgrantsinobstetricandpediatric
pharmacologytrainingandinbasic,translationalandclinicalresearch.

ResearchAlliance(PeDRA)in2012.PeDRAisaresearcharmofSPD.
PeDRAisanetworkthatmultipliesthepowerofindividualresearchersbylinking
themtogetherincollaborativestudies.Itisarapidlygrowingorganization,runby
leadingdermatologistsintheUnitedStatesandCanadawhovolunteertheirtime.
PeDRAstreamlinesresearchbymakingavailableacoalitionofpediatric
specialists—scientistsandclinicians—poisedtoconductclinicaltrialsandother
studiestobetterunderstandpediatricskindiseaseandpotentialsolutions.
Withthepoolingofresourcesandtheresultingexponentialexpansionofthe
