COUGARS FACE BRUINS, PREPPERS IN GLHL PLAY
Most of the teams in the Great Lakes Hockey League turn to tournament play over the next few weeks, but the Lake
Catholic Cougars go to work trying to pick up some points in the league standings.
The Cougars host Padua Franciscan Wednesday evening, then travel to University School to take on the Preppers in their
league opener on Saturday.
The two-time defending Cleveland Cup champion Saint Ignatius Wildcats jumped out to a 2-0-1 start last week that
gives them a one-point lead on the St. Edward Eagles.
St. Edward had three players join their lineup Sunday at
Gilmour Academy after helping the Eagles win their second
consecutive OHSAA Division I football championship on Saturday.
Juniors F Curtis Szelesta, F Ryan Rockwell and F Matthew
Duffy, no doubt with some adrenaline still going from the
football game, each dented the twine in an 8-0 Eagles win
over the Lancers.
Junior G Lynsey Wallace backstopped the Bruins to wins
over Holy Name (3-1) and Rocky River (4-0) last week. Padua will head to the Dayton area for non-league games
against Springboro and Centerville this weekend.
Saint Ignatius and Gilmour Academy took to the ice
at Quicken Loans Arena on Friday, December 4.
University School won four games in three days, but fell in the championship game of the National Interscholastic Invitational Showcase in Jamestown, NY.
Three teams will be representing the Great Lakes Hockey League at the Cornfield Cup tournament in Culver, Indiana this
weekend: Gilmour Academy, Saint Ignatius and Walsh Jesuit.

GILMOUR ACADEMY LANCERS
The Lancers of Gilmour Academy are still looking for their first win of the year after a rigorous start to the league schedule that saw them play three games in three days last weekend...Gilmour head coach John Malloy anticipated scoring
would be a challenge for this year’s team and he was right. The Lancers have been shut out in three of their first seven
games and have yet to score more than one goal in a game...Malloy and his charges will look to get some offensive flow
going in Culver, Indiana this weekend as they participate at the Cornfield Cup tournament.
HOLY NAME GREEN WAVE
Holy Name dropped their league opener, 3-1 to Padua Franciscan on Friday, but they got in the win column as senior G
C. J. Balodis stopped 37 of 38 shots in a 3-1 win at Gilmour Academy on December 5...junior F Sean Bauchens’ scored all
three Namers’ goals at GA—it was the second hat trick of his GLHL career...Holy Name will be in Niagara Falls, Ontario
this weekend for a tournament. They return to league action next Saturday, December 19, when they host Walsh Jesuit
in their 2015-16 Home Opener at Ries Rink in Parma.
LAKE CATHOLIC COUGARS
The...The Cougars headed to Thornton Park Friday to face Shaker Heights—one of the top teams in the Greater Cleveland
High School Hockey League red Division. They suffered a 6-2 setback, but put a couple pucks in the net –something they
hope they can keep going Wednesday night as they host Padua Franciscan in league play...shut out in four straight games
starting with the Midwest Thanksgiving Classic in Dublin...Lake Catholic will be at The Pond on Saturday for a re-match of
the last two Kent District championship games.
PADUA FRANCISCAN BRUINS
The Bruins of Padua Franciscan recorded their fourth straight win over cross-town rival Holy Name, 3-1, in the league
opener for both teams last Friday. The Bruins have won six of the last seven meetings between the two teams, including
the 2015 Brooklyn District Quarterfinal game...After putting two points in the bank for the league standings on Friday,
Padua picked up a quality non-league win over Rocky River on Saturday by a score of 4-0. Junior G Lynsey Wallace
pitched the shutout for the Bruins.
U. S. ARMY PLAYER OF THE WEEK—F SEAN BAUCHENS, HOLY NAME
Holy Name junior F Sean Bauchens is the Great Lakes Hockey League U.S. Army Player of the Week for the period ending
December 6. Bauchens provided the lone tally for the Namers in their 3-1 loss to Padua Franciscan on Friday, then scored
all three goals for the Green Wave in their 3-1 win at Gilmour Academy on Saturday.
Bauchens scored 11 goals in 10 league games as a sophomore last year, establishing himself as one of the top young snipers in the region.
“Sean's ability to shoot the puck is the one of the best I have seen,” said Holy Name head coach Tim Sullivan. “He has a
great release.”

“Sean is a major part of our team’s progression,” added Sullivan. “This year is a
process and Sean needs to lead by example for the young guys in the program.”

ST. EDWARD EAGLES
After winning their first two league games, the St. Edward Eagles will be in St. Catharines, Ontario for a tournament this
weekend. They will return to Northeast Ohio to play in the Padua Christmas Tournament December 18-20. High school
hockey fans will want to circle their calendar for the highlight of that tournament—a re-match of the 2015 state championship game with Toledo St. Francis on Friday, December 18 at 7:00 p.m. at OBM Arena in Strongsville...Senior G Warren
Hill’s shutout of Gilmour Academy was the fifth of his GLHL career…St. Edward has allowed two goals in their three wins
and nine goals in their two losses.
SAINT IGNATIUS WILDCATS
A 2-2 tie against Walsh Jesuit on Saturday snapped a 19-game winning streak for Saint Ignatius in GLHL play (including
Cleveland Cup games) which dates back to a 2-1 overtime loss to University School on February 2, 2014—the last game of
the 2013-14 GLHL regular season...The last regulation loss in GLHL play for the Wildcats was January 11, 2014 by a score
of 3-2 to Holy Name at Ries Rink in Parma (23 league games ago)...Saint Ignatius will get a second shot at Walsh Jesuit
Friday night at the Cornfield Cup tournament...Junior F Connor Koehnke is off to a hot start, leading the league with eight
points (5-3-8), which includes a six-point effort (3-3-6) against Lake Catholic in the first game of the GLHL season.
UNIVERSITY SCHOOL PREPPERS
After a tough 0-4-0 start to their season, the University School Preppers turned it around in a big way, winning their first
four games at the National Interscholastic Invitational Showcase in Jamestown, NY and advancing to the championship
tilt. Playing their fourth game in two days, the Preppers fell to Holy Ghost Prep (PA), 4-1...Through the first nine games
overall, seniors F Robby Engoglia (8-4-12), F Ryan Gorbett (4-5-9) and F Ben Heller (2-7-9) are lighting up the score
sheets for US...Senior G Alec Silver has been a workhorse, playing in eight of the first nine games for the Preppers.
WALSH JESUIT WARRIORS
Although they only collected one of a possible four points, the Walsh Jesuit Warriors have to be very encouraged by their
first two league games: a 2-1 loss to St. Edward and a 2-2 tie with Saint Ignatius...G Jakhari Desphy turned aside 46
shots—including 15 in the first period—to keep the Warriors in the game against the Wildcats, and last week’s U. S. Army
Player of the Week, senior F Drew Musgrave, scored to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the third period of that
game...Sophomore F Matt Morris also scored against Saint Ignatius—a power play goal......Walsh had lost nine of their
previous 10 meetings with Saint Ignatius.
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT—JAMIE REGAN, UNIVERSITY SCHOOL
As a junior at University School, Jamie Regan led the Preppers to their second state championship, shutting out Toledo
St. John’s in the 2009 title game. As a senior, he was named the News-Herald’s Player of the Year.
"I was lucky to coach many great goalies during my tenure at University
School,” said former Preppers head coach Bill Beard. “Jamie is the best of the
bunch. He was technically sound but more impressive, he was the ultimate
gamer and teammate. He made up for a lot of my mistakes."
Following his career at US, Regan played two seasons with the Philadelphia
Revolution of the Eastern Junior Hockey League from 2010-12, gaining All-Star
recognition, before moving on to play NCAA Division I hockey at the University
of New Hampshire (Hockey East).
Regan has been recognized as a Hockey East All-Academic Team member each
of the past two seasons.
The Shaker Heights native has appeared in three games in his career at UNH.
He made his collegiate debut against the University of Massachusetts on November 9, 2013.

His uncle Doug Adams played with the New York Rangers and coached with the
Rochester Americans (AHL) while his father Sean played at Miami University.
