Southwest Memories...
LOS ANGELES — This is
the most difficult thing I have
ever done. Our beloved Southwest Bowl is closing Sunday,
June 1, 2008.
There are so many memories.
My Uncle Carmen, taking my
two brothers and me to tear
down an old farmhouse and
build the outside walls for my
father’s dream: a bowling alley
in 1957.
I remember the year we
opened: 1958. My mother
would make 50 calls a day to
get the ladies to come join a
league. Those were thrilling
times.
But this is a Different Age —
and I’m not sure I like it. One
has to live and keep up with
the times.
So many friends... Claudette,
Mel, Monica, Del, Mabel, P.J.,
Mr. Whitehead, Mr. Hooks,
Paul the Artist, Bobby the
Mack, Faye, Dana, James, Doc,

A couple of weeks ago, Jim women - who teamed with
Hornung and his wonderful Romy Fallabeck. They were

SAN BERNARDINO—
Super Senior, Larry Rumple
(1000 Oaks), won the Senior
Division, his 5th Championship
in the WCST Ebonite Singles at
Del Rosa Lanes last week-end,
and he did it with a very strong
finish in the Position Match,
against the leader at the end of
game #9, Ray Cobb. Ray was
ahead by 78 pins going into this
match. Ray got in trouble early
in the match, and Larry was
stringing strikes. Ray ended up
striking out from the 8th frame,
for a 206 game, but Larry’s 269
and the bonus pins for winning
the match of 30, won this tournament by 15 pins.
The finals field which included WCST Champion,
Robin Romeo, was very competitive and close as only 67
pins separated 3rd to 7th. The
lane pattern “Viking” was used
for both the qualifying and the
finals.
Joe Porcelli bowled a
300 game and a 280 game in
the finals, with a 160 game
sandwiched in between those
games. Ken Diiorio the qualifying leader with plus 344 finished in 5th, with Greg Neuer,
starting in 7th, and a strong 3rd
place finish.
A full house of 65 bowlers
entered with the senior division 39 bowlers and the super
seniors 26 bowlers. The tournament pay-off was $9,170.00,
and 24 checks to the cashers,
making this year’s totals so far
for 5 tournaments, $51,100,00
paid out, and now only $994.00
short of $3,000.000.00 paid
out with a grand total for 268
tournaments, $2,999,096, will
reach that mark in this weekend’s tournament at the Silver
Nugget in N. Las Vegas. The

Kulick Ready For
Tough Task of
Defending USBC
Queens Title
GREENDALE, Wis. - Even
without a professional women’s
bowling tour, defending United
States Bowling Congress Queens
champion Kelly Kulick of Union,
N.J., says the fields are getting
stronger each year in the few major
women’s events that remain.
Kulick will take on a tough
field of more than 300 of the best
women bowlers in the world when
she attempts to defend her Queens
title starting April 26 at Super Bowl
Lanes in the Detroit suburb of Canton, Mich. The finals of the event
will be televised live from Skore
Lanes in Taylor, Mich., by ESPN2
on April 30 at 7 p.m. Eastern.
“I believe the fields today are
stronger than they used to be with
international bowlers coming over
and the incredible number of tough
collegiate bowlers,” said Kulick, a
current Team USA member. “There
are so many talented players that
there are no easy matches in the
Queens anymore. It’s a tough road
to the top, and hopefully I’ll be
prepared enough.”
Heading into last year ’s
Queens, Kulick was by far the
most tested and practiced player in
the field. She had just come off an
historic season in which she was
the first woman to earn an exemption on the Denny’s Professional
Bowlers Association Tour and was
as sharp as she had ever been in her

Tim Tran Wins First ABT
Championship at Westminster Lanes
WESTMINSTER—Tim
Tran won his first Amateur
Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at Westminster Lanes
on Saturday, April 19, 2008
during our one-day 4-game
Beat-the-Board tournament.
Tim bowled in our 6PM squad
and shot games of 259, 254,
223 and 236 with handicap for
a series total of 972 and the
$650 1st place prize plus $800
from the Progressive Pot. Brian
Yamanoha of Torrance came
in second shooting a 947 four
game handicap series for $325.
In third place was Joan Jordan
of Huntington Beach shooting a 945 handicap series and
received $125.
Our newest champion, Tim
Tran has been bowling ABT
for less that a year. Tim has
a high series of 642 and 258
games to his credit. Tim was
using a Roto Grip Cell drilled
by Ben Mach. Tim wanted to
thank Ben for taking care of
his equipment. Tim wanted
to thank his girlfriend, Tina,
for her support and encouragement. Tim plans on using his
winnings to pay bills and bowl
in more tournaments. Tim also
wanted to thank Westminster
Lanes for hosting the tournament and ABT Orange County
staff and directors for running
an outstanding tournament
Vernon Adams was the
winner of the optional 4-game
Scratch Sweeper and $120 with
an 803 scratch series. Pedro
Cintron came in second shooting a 778 series for $60.
Lowell Thompson was the
winner of the optional Senior
Sweeper with a 926 handicap
series, receiving a check for
$80. Jim Ellis came in second

this tournament is $55. First
place will be $1000 with 100
entries. First place with full

saw a five percent increase
in average household audience and a four percent increase in total viewers from
the 2006-07 season.
The 21 telecasts on ESPN
averaged 745,000 households, up from 710,000 in
2006-07 – a five percent
increase – and was a seven
percent increase over the
698,000 average household
audience in 2005-06.
Additionally, an average
of 901,298 total viewers
tuned in to the telecasts, a
four percent increase over
the 867,022 who watched
in 2006-07.
The overall average rating of .80 was equal to the
2006-07 overall rating.
The 2008 Motel 6 Dick
Weber Open in Fountain
Valley, Calif., was the mostwatched event on the Tour
in 2007-08, averaging 1.3
million households, up eight
percent from last year’s
telecast.

topped a tough lady bower

take home a nice $1,500 at
popular Cal Bowl.
Our return to CAL was
just again great. We had
a nice 207 entrants in the
early 3 Squad Event which
had squads at 12:30-2:00 &
3:30. Many of our regulars
from CAL were in Vegas for
sweepers. Side poAts went
for $206 a game and in the
ABTA side pots are only
$2.00 per game.
Due to the nice turnout
50 bowlers advanced to
the semis. Leading the
Semis was gentleman Michael Kong +131. He would
sit out and bowl the title
game. Right behind was the
smooth lefty John Gonzalez
at +124.
So Kong would sit out
and bowl for the title. John
to receive a first round bye
in the single elims and enter in round two. It took a
nice +57 for the men and 3
guaranteed women to make

the Sweet 16 Single Elim
Finals.
The Bowlers took to the
lanes. In the first round
single elims losing were Vic
Fabian, John Brooks, Jun
Cadenas, John Feitz, Wendy
Soo Hoo, Dom Laguardia,
and Enrique Castillo. They
got checks of $100 in 1016th places.
In round two being eliminated were Lynn Waldie,
John Gonzalez,Mike Kearney and Gibin Kim. They
cashed in 6-9 nth places and
$110 each. Round three had
Janine Ditch edge SpeedyBryant 246-229. Kenny
Seiple Sr. downed James
Borillo 231-194. So James
and Speedy were 4th and
5th, and $120 each, with
Ken, and Janine to meet
for the right to bowl Kong
for the title.
In a most exciting game
Janine won out as Ken
chopped a 6-10. She need
to pickup the bucket to advance, which she did. Ken
was 3rd with a great showing and Janine off to the title
match vs Michael Kong.
The title game was set
and the horses were paid!
Janine returned a big $200
in the horse bets for every-
one who had her at $5.00
entry.

Champion James Doolen
RIVERSIDE—James Doolen, our newest champion, won
his first championship at Arlington Lanes this past Saturday. We
want to thank Arlington for hosting our tournament, also thanks
to thier staff.
James won with his Brunswick Fury, drilled by Tony Robbins
at Foothill Lanes. He began bowling when he was only 4 years old
& needless to say, he loves the game. His highest game bowled
was a 280 scratch & he bowls in the Tues. Night Laughlin River
Gamblers league at Foothill Lanes. He joined NABI, along with
his bowling partner, Kathleen Doolen, his mom, 3 months ago.
James is the most likeable young man you could ever meet & has
been striving towards this championship ever since he joned NABI.
We all loved to see him win! When James is not working in the
printing dept. at Stater Bros., he loves to bowl, play basketball &
play video games. James would like to dedicate this win to his
mom, Kathleen & to James, his dad, who are his biggest fans. With
this win, James has won $450 & a NABI champion shirt.
We had a Beat the Board this past Sat., with James coming in
1st with a 713 series with hdcp. Dino Dennis came in 2nd, with a
690. Jay Shackelford came in 3rd with a 678. Dale Jones was 4th
with a 604. Shane Kimberling was 5th with a 598 & Guy Clear
came in 6th with a 589.
Our $50 sidepot winners were: Guy Clear, James Doolen, Shane
Kimberling & Dale Jones (3).

pins ahead of Ron.
Ron, winning his match with a
235 game and the bonus pins of 30,
got by Vaughn Doody, who won his
match from Jim.
Ron got into 2nd by 11 pins,
and this dropped Stan Caswell from

a full season gave me a lot of onlane preparation,” said Kulick, who
will automatically be seeded into
match play as defending champion.
“I don’t feel like I’ve spent as much
time on the lanes leading up to this
year’s Queens, but mentally I feel
like I’m ready. I’ve taken the last
few months to get in the gym and
train. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get
to the point I was at last year and
walk into those shoes to find the
same level of success.”
Should Kulick come away
with another victory, she would
become just the fifth woman to
successfully defend a Queens title,
joining Katsuko Sugimoto (1981,
1982), Donna Adamek (1979,
1980), Dorothy Fathergill (1972,
1973) and Mildred Ignizio (197071). Kulick also would become
the seventh woman with multiple
Queens titles.
The Queens kicks off with 10
qualifying games over two days
before the field is cut to the top
100 for five additional qualifying
games. The top 63 then advance to
join Kulick in double-elimination
match play, which begins at 1 p.m.
April 28. The final five players
will advance to the televised
stepladder finals.
The qualifying and match
play portions of the Queens at
Super Bowl Lanes are open to
the public at no charge. A limited number of tickets for the
televised finals at Skore Lanes
will be sold for $10 and can
be purchased at either bowling
center starting April 26.

Grabinski Grabs 1st Donkee at Del Rio
DOWNEY—Our newest champion Ray Grabinski edged out front runners Clark and Mikey who
were sitting 1 & 2 after 2 games with a big 245 scratch game his 3rd game to steal the title. Ray is
a systems technician by trade for Charter Communications for the past 17 yrs. Ray is supported and
would like to thank his family for their cheers and support today. Wife Julie ( A donkee member ),
and his children Jaime and Mary. Ray was throwing his Rotogrip Saturn drilled by Josh Montgomery
of Professional Approach Lakewood. Ray sports personal highs of a 257 game and 650 series. As
we had a finalist that had to leave in the middle of our final, our super pacer Chuck stepped in fill in
and Ray would like to thank him for pushing him to throw more strikes. Exclaimed by Ray “ Its great
to be a champion “. On a personal note Ray would like to dedicate his win to Mr Simon Rojas. We

Spiesman and Le Strike Doubles Win
Congratulations to Jeff Spiesman and Brian Le on taking home
the Dual-Club Doubles title last tournament at Fountain Bowl. Jeff
and Brian qualified 5th and lit up the Baker bracket all the way to
a finals victory verses a very tough team of Natalie Jimenez and
Cody Mendoza. Carry went the way of the two lefties as they
struck their way to a 252-212, 194-215, 222-200 victory and the
title. Congratulations to all of the bowlers on some great bowling
and a great turnout for this fun event!
Brackets for Adults This Time!
In addition to our usual $2 Farm Club and Open Division
Brackets, we will be featuring $5 Adult scratch brackets also. In
addition, if there is interest, we will offer handicap adult brackets
too! Get in on some side action and help support the JAT at the
same time!
Adult/Junior, Second Edition!
Our next event will again be our JAT Adult/Junior Doubles at
Brunswick West Covina. Again we will have two divisions- 390
and under handicap and 391 + scratch- and we hope to beat our
turnout of 57 teams from earlier this season at this fun event!
This event will feature 5 games of qualifying followed by a Baker
Bracket for the title. Scholarships to the juniors as well as some
small gift cards for the hard-working adults! action for the adults
this time with Open and Farm $2 Scholarship Brackets and Adult
$5 Brackets too! We will also be having another bowling ball raffle
for your ball of choice for only $1. $70 per team for this great
event and we hope that all bowlers, parents and even siblings get
out on the lanes for one of our biggest events of the season!
What Do I Come In At?
For our next event, use 2007 book average. If none, use just
entered 2008 book average, if none, current average of 21 games
or more. If none, enter at 200. Same average rules for adults and
juniors except JAT and Farm bowlers who have bowled 4 or more

Mason with a memorial service and bowling Monday. Pauline was a
spirited competitor and loved a good time. Born August 20, 1926, she
passed away April 15, 2008. She will be remembered for her smile and

States Bowling Congress and Strike Ten Entertainment, gets closer, USBC is profiling each of the 16 participants in the

The Clash will bring together 16 champions of USBC events and the U.S. Open ranging in age from teenagers to seniors

WICHITA, KS—As usual I was following the USBC press
releases of the NCAA Women’s Bowling Championship and
USBC InterCollegiate Team Bowling Championships, one of the
releases was about the “Night of Champions” banquet held last
Wednesday April 16. In that they gave out awards ad honors to the
participating bowlers selected respectively by National Collegiate
Bowling Coaches Association and Bowling Writers Association
of America.
One name on the list of honorees, Lindsey Coulles caught
my eyes.
Lindsey. we knew is hearing-impaired and a former member
of Junior Team USA while at Morehead State University. I was
surprised that she had transferred to Central Florida U and is
competing on the Central Florida bowling team.
In both Team Championships, Central Florida team did not
do well but Lindsey did well enough as chosen by the NCBCA
coaches for the 2nd NCBCA All American Team.
Also the Bowling Writers Association of America gave her a
honorable mention.
Great for her and somebody please tell her to come to the Deaf
Team USA Trials this June and try out for the women’s team for
the 2009 Taiwan Deaflympics. The deaf women’s team needs a
bowler of her caliber.
Another thing, both NCAA Women’s Championships and
USBC InterCollegiate Championships are great tournments
and they made me wish that Gallaudet University had kept their
bowling lanes and automatic pin setters. They could train the
deaf and hearing -impaired bowlers who attened as students, for
these tournaments,
NEWS FLASH - MALUCCI WON THE
CAHEN MASTERS IN OHIO
COLUMBUS—I was informed that Carl Malucci won the
prestigious Great Lakes Deaf Bowling Association Herman Cahen
Masters and Diedere Alkire placed as runner-up -n the GLDWBA
Queens. No other details were given, so we wait for the proof of
these items to be written later.

ANAHEIM — In theThursday Linbrook Juniors, Andrew Stewart aced
the lanes for his first 700 series on games of 232-247-230 for an awesome
709 series. Bowling against Andrew, Matt Nickeson nailed a terrific series
with games of 225-188-188 for a 601 series. Mark McLeod mixed the pins
for 219-214-188 for a great 621 series. Other highlighed scoring bowled by
Thomas Iriye, 84 average, 122-129, Christopher DeFazio, 118 average, 151
and Norma Hatch, 97 average, 122-127.
In the Junior Adult Scratch Doubles, E. J. Rogers rolled some fabulous
games to take over high series for the Adults. E.J. started with 236 then
tossed a pair of 277 games smashing a 790 series. Aaron Wilson had the
high series for the Juniors with 195-237-234 for a great 666 series. Not far
behind were Mark McLeod striking for a 224-213-224 for a sizzling 661, Andrew Stewart slamming 225-234-191 for a nice 650 and Valerie Matsumoto
shooting 187-234-196 for a sweet 617 series. For the Adults, no one was close
to E.J. but other high scores were rolled by Stacy Rider 226-214-212/652,
Bob Mathias 233-200-203/636, Andrew Newburn 212-223/605 and John
Munson 255/602.
In the Bumper Busters, Jennifer Lewis rolled a beautiful game of 120 followed by an 86, Taylor Pac pummeled the pins for 90-94, Yasmine Kadri
rolled 85-89-92, Alison Hong hit 85-92 and Zack Jellsey 91-90-64. Great

In the Saturday Linbrook Juniors, Matt Nickeson continues to improve
and shows his skills with great scores 237-194-189 for a terrific 620 series.
Aaron Wilson just missed 600 with 223-213 for a 599 series. There were
lots of 200 games scored by Nick Murillo 225, Andrew Stewart 216, Jimmy

You can’t be doing too much wrong in the 590 Classic when you
roll a 950 series and lead the league for the week. The likeable David
Wright can attest to that as that’s just what he did on games of 234, 223,
238 and 255.
