Over $1 Million in Scholarships Available
in 2014-2015
With over 200 scholarship funds that support
high school seniors, college undergraduate and
graduate students, every student in the
Chautauqua region has the opportunity to
receive financial assistance to further their
education. This year, we are excited to offer over
$1 million to our students.
To apply,
students
should visit
crcfonline.org
and look for
the “Going to
College” link on the right side of the page. Click
the link and follow the instructions. Students will
be automatically matched to scholarships that
fit their course of study.
Common courses of study include business,
healthcare, vocations, technology, art and
education, and are available for students
studying at two-year or four-year institutions.
All applications are due June 1 with supportive
material, including transcripts and
financial aid information, due June 30. For

“Come on Down!”
Lakewood native Stanley Michael Johnson has certainly had a whirlwind
of a year.
In addition to winning it big on an episode of “The Price is Right” this
summer, Stanley Michael was awarded the Ted Moll Flight Scholarship to
assist him in his studies at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
A Dean’s List student, he plans on graduating in December with a degree
in Air Traffic Management.

Moll Flight Scholarship for the third consecutive year,” Stanley Michael wrote. “It has been an
honor to receive it and has really helped me with my college expenses.”

Responding to the Call of Duty
In the words of a former colleague, “(Helen Gibbs Kerns) believed
that good writing was a craft that could clarify thinking and
enhance the ability to better appreciate and understand literature
in all of its forms.”
For 26 years, Helen instilled that lesson, and many others, to her
students at Westfield Academy and Central School. When she
retired in 1983, the yearbook editors remarked that “her high
standard of scholarship and concern for the students will be
remembered.” Today, her family is making sure that happens.

priority. If none meet that criteria,
students studying Journalism,
Literature or Creative Writing will
be considered.

A man who always put others
before himself, Michael Valvo’s
memory will continue to help
others.
A Private in the U.S. Army
Forestville Fire Department
during World War II, Michael
was awarded the Silver Star
Medal and Purple Heart for his selfless actions. Returning home, he
worked as a postmaster and mail carrier in Forestville. In his spare
time, he served as an EMT with the Forestville Fire Department. A
member of the fire department at the time of his death, Michael
had previously served as president and chief of the department and
captain and lieutenant of the rescue squad.
In honor of his service, his family recently established the
Michael S. Valvo Memorial Fund to provide financial support
to the Forestville Fire Department Emergency and Rescue Squad
for EMT training expenses.

Below are two of the most recent funds established at the
Chautauqua Region Community Foundation.
Randall S. Peterson Memorial Fund
In addition to being a loving husband, brother, father and son,
Randy was also devoted to his community.
As a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, the Busti Planning
Board, Allen Park Men’s Club and Lakewood Rod and Gun
Club to name a few, Randy took pride in his community. Upon
his passing in January, his family established this fund to
continue supporting the community Randy loved being a part
of.
Ruth S. Dodds Memorial Music Scholarship
With a passion for music and education, Ruth owned and
operated A-Musing Company Music House and taught
private piano lessons to students of all ages.
When she passed away in July, her friends and family
created a scholarship to provide financial assistance to
Jamestown, Falconer, Frewsburg, Maple Grove and
Southwestern Central School students , of any age,
participating in music instruction, education or training.
