The KEC Newsletter Celebrating 30 years of service to the low voltage electrical industry Key Note Speech ‘Convergence of Technologies for Rapid Development’ KEC’s Chairman and Managing Partner Abdul Rahman Alghunaim Delivers a KeyNote Address to the IEI Kuwait Chapter In an address recently to the Kuwait IEC, KEC’s Chairman & Managing Partner - Abdul Rahman Alghunaim LFIEEE, FIET - shared his thoughts and aspirations concerning the topical subject of ‘convergence’. A s a qualified engineer, a former Minister of State and former Under Secretary of the Kuwait Ministry of Communications - combined with an esteemed background in engineering and business, Abdul Rahman AlGhumain - KEC’s long-standing Chairman and Managing Partner - was honoured to deliver the key note address at the recent annual gathering of the Kuwait IEC. ‘Convergence’ - one of the key global issues and ‘opportunities’ in the world of telecommunications today - he views in a way which is very much prevalent in the world of the low-voltage electrical industry…. and the following is an excerpt of his remarks: ‘Today we see all round development in various technological sectors. Advance in Communication Technology with data processing and imaging technology has driven most of the planet into a state of ubiquitous, cost-effective, real time multi-model connectivity from anywhere to anywhere. Mobile communication, for example, has grown to such a stage that there is no place on the earth where you cannot reach. This development and convergence of technologies have helped in improvement of healthcare, defence, e-governance, human-machine interface and education, etc. Nano-technology has shown its presence and is being recognized as a foundation for advances in Bio and Info technologies. It has helped in shrinking chip electronics, reduction in power disruption, creation of value of wealth besides creating cures and treatments resulting in extending life expectancy and elimination of sufferings of mankind. The Defence Industry has received a big boost with the development of robotics, communication tools, biological, chemical and nano-weapons. These technologies have helped in space research and warfare, bionic scanning of people entering airports and other sensitive areas resulting in tightening of security and surveillance. The world of tomorrow, it is hoped, will utilise this tremendous potential emerging from the merger of these technological advancements for the welfare of the whole society and enhance longevity and quality of life. This convergence of technologies will, however, cause strains on law makers, politicians and social activists, and that is an area where institutions like IEI, IEEE, etc. can cooperate and work towards utilising these changes for the benefit of mankind.’ Issue 14 Presentation to Abdul Rahman Alghunaim by Eng. Ahmed Al Mershad. Through his role within KEC, the speaker has seen the practical demonstration of technology delivering integrated control, management and function in building projects in and around Kuwait and especially where, as in Trend and Gent systems, the interlinking of controls and monitoring across the technologies is being pushed to new limits across entire building complexes. A high level of focus in the low voltage electrical industry is being channelled these days towards the concept and reality of integrated ‘intelligent buildings’ of the future in order to deliver the increased customer features, benefits, energy-savings and inter-operability opportunities sought by all. The prestigious gathering was highly receptive to his thoughts and experiences. ‘ The world of tomorrow, it is hoped, will utilise this tremendous potential emerging from the merger of these technological advancements for the welfare of the whole society and enhance longevity and quality of life...... Trend’s commitment is demonstrated by the Trend network version of the IQ3xcite, which delivers the latest technology to existing systems. The KEC Systems Solutions Team, under the leadership of Pugazhendi Sundararajan, these days boasts a dedicated BMS customer facing sales engineer specialist, combined with vital strength of installation, commissioning and maintenance support under the leadership of KEC’s Ralph Vieira and a rapidly expanding team of fully trained and fully versed field engineers. Whatever your requirements in BMS, it could now pay to be thinking in terms of switching to Trend for your next BMS installation in partnership with KEC. KEC now boasts local Trend stocks ‘off the shelf’ and at prices which are undoubtedly industry competitive. Think Sales of Brand-Rex Structured Cabling Soar Brand-Rex, one of the leading European manufacturer’s of Structured Cabling in the datacom business, is rapidly becoming ‘brand of choice’ here in Kuwait, notes KEC’s Puga Sundararajan, sales having risen strongly in recent months. Demand for Brand-Rex copper and fibre-based products has increased significantly recently. In the major project sector, companies such as Kuwait Oil Company continue to invest in and upgrade data infrastructure networks. But, there has also been a significant pick-up in demand in the trade sector of the Kuwait marketplace - where Brand-Rex is increasingly becoming the ‘brand of choice.’ “It’s always been our aim to build KEC as everyone’s first point of call for all their Brand-Rex structured cabling needs” added KEC’s Pugazhendi Sundararajan and it’s been extremely encouraging to note the positive progress that we have managed to achieve in recent times. Much of the real success to date is attributable to the ‘quality & reliability’ of the Brand-Rex copper and fibre-optic product offering, along with an extensive range of complementary data accessories. But, it has to be said, that the continued investment that we have made in our supply chain aimed at making the BrandRex product available ‘off the shelf ’ either via KEC in the case of medium to major projects or via an increasingly active network of stockists so that it is there just when its wanted has really paid dividends. Brand-Rex, headquartered in Glenrothes in Scotland’s ‘silicon valley’ has received extensive manufacturing focused investment of more than £6 million in recent times, courtesy of its owners – US-based private equity firm, The Gores Group. From relatively humble beginnings 2-3 years ago when the embryonic team was largely responsible for trouble-shooting and commissioning some of Kuwait’s leading ‘GENT’ fire detection & alarm system installations - the team has grown significantly in expertise numbers and coverage to now include leading KEC brands such as: Brand-Rex structure cabling; Quantran dimming controls; Cooper CEAG and JSB emergency lighting solutions; GE UPS solutions and Trend - the UK’s leading Building Management Control systems. “Such prestigious and challenging Kuwait projects as the new Messilah Beach Hotel, CitiBank - including extensive ‘GENT’ fire detection & alarm ‘networking’ projects for the likes of KOC - have been undertaken by the KEC team in recent times,” noted KEC’s Peter Woods - to which he added, “more recently this includes the prestigious Al Awadi Tower where we have been awarded the ‘GENT’ maintenance contract and there remains a huge commitment and dedication on the part of the KEC Management to the team’s continued future training & development. We want to ensure that we have the capability to really support the success of our rapidly building ‘intelligent building’ system solutions business.” Great Close to MK-KEC 2006-2007 Cricket Season in Association with Gulf Consult A recent presentation event hosted by one of Kuwait’s leading architects, planners and consultants - Gulf Consult - marked an exciting end to the 2006-2007 MK-KEC cricket sponsorship season and came hard on the heels of the recent ICC Twenty-20 matches held here in Kuwait. Aimed at new and emerging cricketers in Kuwait, this season’s matches brought together, in the final phase, twenty participating teams divided into five groups. The prize giving event was attended by many of Kuwait’s senior cricket administrators and dignitaries. Jeff De Lange MBE, Gulf Consult’s Deputy Managing Director along with KEC’s Peter Woods, made the presentations. Thanks were expressed for the contribution of KEC and MK Electric for their further active participation and sponsorship and tribute was paid once again to ‘the unique partnership’ in the Kuwait construction industry which aimed to put something back into developing Kuwait’s young cricketing enthusiasts and driving for overall improvement in cricketing standards. The Five Winners from each group were: Group A: Alghanim Industries team, captained by Suad Galsuker Group B: Skylark team, captained by Edward Menezes, Group C: Al Mulla team, captained by Imran Khan Group D: Duraar team, captained by Alok Chugh Group E: DHL team, captained by Nasir Chilwan Issue 14 Page 15 PRESTIGE 3D - 90 YEARS IN THE MAKING Names are important.
