Our history. Our mission. Our pride.
With 50 years of success in educating children from different backgrounds
and of all learning abilities, Storefront Academy has been unlocking young
minds and expanding the possible for generations of students since 1966 on
our campus in Harlem. Cultivating intellect and character in equal measure,
Storefront Academy schools instill powerful sense of self, and give students
the tools to own the future and create meaningful adult lives.
Expand the possible. Own the future.
Storefront Academy South Bronx is a public charter school that opened in September 2015 and educates
kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students. Like its sister school Storefront Academy Harlem, a
tuition-free private school, Storefront Academy South Bronx will provide an academically rigorous, joyful and
intentional learning environment to all of its students, paving the way for high school, college and life
success.
In fall 2016, Storefront Academy South Bronx will move its campus to 609 Jackson Avenue, a new
custom-designed facility. The building will include an art room, a music room, a state-of-the-art kitchen, and
smart-boards and computers in every classroom.
Our approach sets us apart.
Our successes speak volumes, and are credited to our unique and holistic approach to education founded on
two core components: academic rigor and strategic nurturing.
• Strong Academics and Personalized Instruction
Teachers are specially trained to personalize instruction to meet the needs of all learners, and effectively
scaffold lessons to ensure optimal support to move every student toward independence. Storefront
Academy South Bronx boasts a strong academic program, and with two teachers in each classroom, we
ensure that all students are on grade level in all subjects. Our extended day program and individual and
small group intervention provide students with academic support in a supervised environment.
• Counseling and Social and Emotional Support
Storefront Academy South Bronx employs a full-time licensed social worker who provides counseling
sessions and workshops for students and teachers and collaborates with families in response to student
needs. Additionally, our core values are designed to strengthen self-understanding and provide tools to
manage and respond to conflicts and appreciate diversity.
• Enrichment Programming
Our visual arts, music, and movement programs expose students to a variety of experiences and many ways
to express themselves. Students study global arts and cultures and engage in long-term projects to deepen
their understanding. Additionally, students in all grades participate in field trips around New York City, which
encourage them to explore the world around them, to challenge themselves, and to create and imagine.
