This year over 400 motorcycles took over $6,000 worth of toys and dropped them at a Columbus Fire Station. The riders then proceeded to Screamin’ Willies for a benefit, including food and an auction. Special thanks to all the ABATE members who donated, solicited, cooked, worked, set up and cleaned up for this event, It would not be possible without the generosity of the Region 9 members. Thanks also go out to the Gahanna American Legion and VFW Honor Guard, for presenting of the colors and to Pat Brobeck and Hillbilly Jan Auctioneers. Here we are at the holiday season already. Take a few moments to slow down and enjoy being with friends and family. Take a well deserved rest and recharge those batteries. We have a lot of work Ed “Enjoyin’ the Ride” Schetter to finish this legislative cycle and I can’t think of a better group of people to role up my sleeves and help fight for the freedoms we deserve than the members of ABATE of Ohio. Have a safe and happy holiday season. (I’ve heard an ABATE membership makes a great Christmas present HO HO HO). We are half way through the legislative cycle here in Ohio. We have movement on the Handle Bar bill and the Right of Way Bill thanks to the tireless work of Scott Wood, our State Legislative Director. Be ready to roll into action early in 2012 to get these passed. With it being a Presidential election year things are going to slow down. People will be more worried about getting reelected than passing bills. Remember, if we don’t get legislation passed by the end 2012, we have to start it over again in 2013. It is your efforts that keep this organization strong and a government watchdog when it comes to motorcycling here in the Great State of Ohio. We have had the blessing of great riding in a choice state that is very motorcycle friendly (look how many plates from other states you see here in the Buckeye State) and I appreciate your efforts in maintaining those freedoms. Start making plans for Seminar 2012 where we will setting the goals for and pointing ABATE in a direction for success in 2012 and into the future. Outspokin’ (Continued on Page 24, By-Law Changes) 6 OHV use threatened by possible EPA regulation on dust Former U.S. senator joins AMA as vice president for government relations Urge your Representative and Senators to support legislation to exempt dust from EPA regulation today! On April 15, 2011, Reps. Kristi Noem (R-SD), Robert Hurt (RVA), Leonard Boswell (D-IA) and Larry Kissell (D-NC) introduced H.R. 1633, the "Farm Dust Regulation Prevention Act of 2011." Senator Mike Johanns (R-NE) introduced its companion bill (S. 1528) on September 8, 2011. The bills would bring much-needed certainty to the off-highway vehicle (OHV) community by exempting rural "nuisance dust" from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation and allow states and localities to regulate it. This regulatory restraint may lead to a de facto ban of OHV use on racetracks, in designated recreation areas, on trails and even on private property all across this country. The EPA staff and its Clean Air Science Advisory Council in its review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards as required every five years under the Clean Air Act recommended considering the option of a much tighter Particulate Matter (PM) standard for "nuisance dust," commonly known as farm dust. The EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson, in a letter, dated Oct. 14, 2011, addressed to Chairman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, stated, "I am prepared to propose the retention – with no revisions – of the current PM10 standard and form when it is sent to OMB [Office of Management and Budget] for interagency review." To view the letter, click here. On Nov. 3, 2011, Rep. Ed Whitfield (R-KY), chair of the Energy and Power Subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, stated in his opening statement at a markup that "...the PM10 standards themselves have a track record of changing from the proposal to the final stage, as occurred with both the 1997 and 2006 PM10 standards. The fact that EPA staff and its advisory committee have clearly recommended considering the option of a much tighter farm dust standard in its rulemaking record only heightens concerns about what its final rule might do and what it would cost." To view Rep. Whitfield's statement and to view an archive webcast of the markup, click here. With the possibility of a tougher PM10 standard still a possibility, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and the All-Terrain Vehicle Association (ATVA) support the passage of H.R. 1633 and S. 1528, which will provide much-needed certainty to the OHV community by exempting rural "nuisance dust." The AMA and ATVA need your help to pass these bills. You can find contact information for your lawmakers at AmericanMotorcyclist.com > Rights > Issues & Legislation, then enter your zip code in the "Find your Officials" box. A prewritten e-mail is available for you to send to your federal elected official immediately by following the "Take Action" option and entering your information. Again, the AMA and ATVA urge you to write your Representative and Senators today and ask them to support H.R.1633 and S. 1528. December 2011 September 21, 2011 Former two-term U.S. Senator Wayne Allard of Colorado has joined the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) as vice president for government relations beginning Oct. 3, the AMA reports. "We are extremely pleased to welcome Senator Allard to the AMA," said Rob Dingman, AMA president and CEO. "The addition of Senator Allard raises the profile of the AMA significantly in the corridors of Congress and federal agencies, and his presence bodes well for motorcyclists nationwide as he serves our mission to promote the motorcycle lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycling. "We look forward to taking our advocacy to the next level with Senator Allard leading our government relations efforts in Washington, D.C.," Dingman said. Allard, who represented Colorado during three terms in Congress and two terms in the U.S. Senate between 1991 to 2009, said he is looking forward to his new role. "I am anxious to contribute to the good work of the AMA, and I look forward to working with the staff and members of the Association," Allard said. "Colorado's motorcyclists helped me win elections, and they kept me informed about their issues. The role of government in our everyday lives is of great concern to motorcyclists, and I look forward to helping educate our elected officials, agencies and the public about the vital role that motorcycling plays in America's economy and way of life." Born and raised in Colorado, Allard has a long history of serving the people of that state and of the nation, first as a member of the state Senate from 1983 to 1991, then as a congressman from 1991 to 1997 and finally as a U.S. senator from 1997 to 2009. Allard declined to seek re-election to the Senate in the 2008 elections, fulfilling a campaign promise made in 1996 that if elected to the Senate he would only serve two terms. A veterinarian who for many years owned his own practice in Colorado, Allard grew up on his family's ranch and is an avid outdoor enthusiast. While in the Senate, Allard was a co-sponsor of the James Peak Wilderness Bill that created a 14,000-acre Wilderness area around the 13,294-foot-high James Peak mountain in Colorado. The legislation followed the federal definition of Wilderness established by Congress in 1964, addressed the concerns of a variety of stakeholders while at the same time preserving property, water and other rights, and ultimately protected land crucial to Colorado's watershed. Allard currently resides in Loveland, Colo., with his wife of 44 years, Joan. They have two daughters. He will be relocating back to Washington, D.C., to work in the AMA office. Outspokin’ 7 It’s the end of the year already. The craziness of the holiday season is here. That also means that a new year is right around the corner. The pressure is on the legislators to Scott “Woody” Wood make some good things happen, in order for them to be re-elected. Let’s make sure they know about the issues we are interested in. Currently I am working with legislators for both the ROW bill and the handlebar bill. I recently had a meeting with Imre Szauter (AMA), Sen. Shaffer, and Rep. Uecker’s aid. The Ohio ROW Working Group came up with a rough draft to an amendment to S.B. 92. The amendment is a result of a meeting with interested parties of the bill. John Murphy of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Association said that the association had gone neutral on the bill, but he felt the bill would be easier to pass if the bill included increases in penalties for more similar crimes. The amendment changes the introduction of the section of the Ohio Revised Code that the infractions that are covered under the right of way bill, which is section 4511. The amendment changes the penalties for all traffic minor misdemeanors included in section 4511 that result in serious injury or death. The result of the meeting was that Sen. Shaffer is going to take the amendment to the Ohio Judicial Conference to see how the wording needs to read regarding points. The amendment currently has a set amount of points added on a driver’s license if convicted. We believe the OJC may only stay neutral on the bill if judges have discretion on how many points should be given. I also had a meeting with Rep. Rosenberger regarding the handlebar bill. I reported to him a problem with H.B. 316. The bill requires that the driver of a motorcycle to be able from a sitting position turn the front wheel 45 degrees in either direction, to prove they have sufficient control over the motorcycle. After verifying with a service manager that had worked with several sports bikes over several years, I informed Rep. Rosenberger that this test would not work for many models of sport bikes. Many sports bikes have factory stops that will not permit them to turn more than 22.5 degree in either direction. The decision was made to make an amendment to the bill. I brought up several different options. Rep. Rosenberger is reviewing the research that I gave him and will meet with co-sponsors to determine what they would prefer to do. I hope everyone has great holidays. Remember to email any questions, problems, suggestions to me at legislativedirector@abate.com. As has been done for the past several years, the MRF requested that it be attended by Sustaining State Motorcyclists' Rights Organizations (SSMRO) Legislative and/or Executive Officers. The goal was to set the MRF's Federal Legislative Agenda for the 2011 Meeting of the Minds to 2012 Meeting of the Minds annual cycle. The MRF's SSMRO partners responded once again with a majority attendance, and the Legislative Committee was extremely pleased at the aligned and clear direction from our SSMRO partners. This level of alignment will allow for a solid and focused Strategic Action Plan to be developed, disseminated, and effectively employed. The session this year was moderated by MRF Vice President Jay Jackson, supported by MRF Vice President of Government Relations and Public Affairs Jeff Hennie and MRF President Kirk "Hardtail" Willard. Way to go JD. The Foundation has many motorcycle safety and educations programs. One of our finest is chaired by Mike Stock; this is the Drivers Education Program. We have about ½ dozen people that go into drivers education classes all over the state and present a program that makes new drivers aware that there are motorcycles out on the road and you need to look out for them. We are always looking for more instructors, so if you might be interested in this, please get a hold of me. We have LOOK TWICE SAVE A LIFE wrist bands and Thumb rings that say TXTING KLLS, for anyone that does not do texting that is short for TEXTING KILLS! The videos we show are a bit graphic, but they do not go too far and they definitely get the point across. We sell many products that have the LOOK TWICE SAVE A LIFE message on them, and will be coming up with some new products in the coming year. We have a Fatal Vision program that is all about operating a vehicle with in your limits. We can bring this program to your next meeting or event. We also put this program on for nonmotorcycle related events. So if your city or town is having an event that might reach a lot of people, this would be a great program for that. THE MRF has a new program: The 3R’s, BE RESPOSIBLE, RIDE RESPONSIBLE and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. This program is a bit too graphic for high school age people, but it is great for the college age audience. If you have a college near you that we could present this program too, we would be glad to do it. This is just a short overview of the Foundation and what we do. In a recent 6-to-1 decision, the state’s high court upheld a prior circuit court ruling that backed the governor and Legislature's ability to take money from hundreds of special state funds to offset budgetary deficits, a practice commonly referred to as “sweeping”. Motorcycle riders sued former Gov. Rod Blagojevich after he swept $1.2 million from the Cycle Riders Safety Training Fund (CRSTF) to pay general state bills after a 2004 law passed by lawmakers allowed him to do so. A portion of the fee for an Illinois motorcycle license goes into the CRSTF, which ABATE of Illinois argued was only to be spent on motorcycle safety education. "Clearly, the fee charged by the state for motorcycle registration and licensing is state revenue, and therefore the portion of this state revenue which the General Assembly has allocated to the CRSTF is also public money," wrote Justice Anne Burke in the majority opinion. Burke rejected the ABATE lawyers’ argument that the special fund was tantamount to a special trust fund. The state Supreme Court concluded that the legislature cannot create an irrevocable trust with public money because this would place an unconstitutional restraint upon the legislature’s plenary power. Sweeping special funds was a controversial way to deal with budget deficits during the Blagojevich administration, and although the court’s ruling opens the door to more such sweeps, current Illinois Governor Pat Quinn opposes fund sweeps and has worked to end the practice. MICHIGAN REQUESTS YOUR SUPPORT FOR HELMET FREEDOM Michigan may be on the verge of repealing their mandatory helmet law as Senate Bill 291 appears destined for the governor’s desk, and ABATE of Michigan has issued a “Call to Action” requesting the help of all motorcyclists in their freedom of choice efforts. SB291 passed the Michigan Senate 24-14 in late June, and is now back for a “concurrence vote” after passing the House 69-39 on Nov 2nd, so a favorable vote will put ABATE’s hopes in the hands of Governor Rick Snyder who has not indicated whether he will sign or veto the measure. Two previous repeal bills were vetoed by then-Gov. Jennifer Granholm. “Governor Snyder prides himself on being all about business and helping business,” said Vince Consiglio, President of ABATE of MI, adding; “A letter from a ‘FREE’ State may help him realize Michigan loses motorcycle money every day of the summer with a mandatory helmet law.” Under the bill, motorcyclists 21 and older would have the option of riding helmet-free if they have two years of experience or have taken a safety course, and if they buy at least $20,000 in medical insurance. “Please urge Governor Snyder to support adult choice,” requests Consiglio on behalf of ABATE, by contacting Governor Rick Snyder, State Capital, P.O. That is why it is disheartening to hear of discrimination based solely on appearance.” Upon being alerted of the fair’s new anti-biker policy, Facebook exploded with messages like this: "ALERT/INFO: The State Fair of La. has adopted the policy: NO COLORS… Signs are now being posted at all gates. NO BIKER COLORS of ANY KIND. Please pass this on to ALL BIKER friends and family. MC's are being Discriminated against. To Complain:::: Call State Fair of La. Let Your VOICES be heard.... Repost!!! Don't support the fair..." You can imagine that bikers, their friends and family were livid. They began to complain about the discrimination with phone calls to the Director of the State Fair, and his offices. The result: Before the end of the day, this message by the representative for Independent Riders, Northwest Louisiana, was posted on Facebook: "UPDATE...UPDATE...UPDATE... WE HAVE WON !!!!! Just received a call... And the State Fair of Louisiana has now changed their policy. THE SIGNS HAVE BEEN REMOVED AND ALL BIKERS ARE WELCOME AT THE FAIR !!!!!! Never, never, NEVER underestimate the power of a close knit FAMILY !!! Thanks to all who made calls and helped !!!” Louisiana State COIR (Coalition Of Independent Riders) Commander Lionel “Nite Train” Bailey reported that the US Defenders and COIR conducted a phone campaign and not only have the Louisiana State Fair officials rescinded their No Colors policy, but even offered to organize a Bike Night to a Blue Oyster Cult concert. LAWMAKERS OVERRIDE GOVERNOR’S VETO OF RED LIGHT BILL The Illinois House voted 94-21 and the Senate voted 45-6 to override Gov. Pat Quinn’s veto of the “Dead Red” bill supported by ABATE of Illinois that would allow motorcyclists to proceed through malfunctioning red lights. As written, House Bill 2860 sponsored by Senator Gary Forby (D-Benton) and Representative Daniel Beiser (D-Alton), specifies that a motorcyclist would be permitted to legally run a red light "after a reasonable period of time," but Quinn vetoed the legislation with the request that a two minute wait time be amended to it. The law will now go into effect on January 1, 2012, and according to Sen. Forby; “A measure I sponsored (HB 2860) will now become law after I was successful in overriding the governor’s amendatory veto. To alleviate a few of the concerns some of my colleagues raised, I introduced a "trailer bill" that requires motorcyclists to wait 120 seconds before proceeding through the red light. For those of us who have been stuck at a light without it ever changing to green, we know how reasonable this legislation is. 11 other states already have laws like this in place, none of which have tried to rescind it.” WEIRD NEWS: SPAIN FINES OVER HELMETLESS TOM HANKS POSTER The Spanish distributor for the movie “Larry Crowne” was fined for a poster showing stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts riding a motorcycle without a helmet. A: As I have long said, the best thing you can do to protect your organization is to have a release and waiver signed by each participant and make sure you have procedures in place to make sure that everyone signs it. Sometimes, however, someone will slip over the gate and get into the ride without signing the release, despite the best efforts of the organizers. Always one of my big fears. A recent opinion by the California Court of Appeals may provide you some breathing room. In that case, a couple injured in a recreational motorcycle ride sued because the ride did not have a police escort. The Plaintiff was an experienced rider and had signed waivers for previous rides, but somehow got in the ride without signing a waiver, including previous years of the same ride in which they were injured. The Court of Appeals ruled that the injured couple “assumed the risk” of the ride. The couple on the ride were injured when a van swerved into their lane causing a collision. The court ruled that the couple had waived any right to sue even though they had not signed a waiver for this ride but had signed such waivers in previous rides. (As I said earlier, waivers are still needed but this case helps with those that sneak into an event without signing a MY NEW HANDLE: SIDECAR ROD waiver) The court held that the risk of participating in a motorcycle ride Doesn’t A Side Hack Have All Of The Disadvantages Of A Motorcycle With with a large number of participants along public highways is self-evident, None Of The Advantages? and that the risk of being injured while in a motorcycle procession is well known as all rides do not have police escorts. Then I installed glass mirror tiles on the corner walls. Within weeks the stage was set (pun intended) and plenty of fun and frolic has been had by all over the years. Bummer’s Bar soon became “Party Central”. In fact, without any prompting from me, a tradition began where women would often leave their bras hung from the ceiling beams. Over 25 bras of assorted colors, material, shapes and sizes have mysteriously appeared there, not as trophies, but as testaments to the donors’ sense of frisky frivolity. When I married my most recent ex-wife, she and HER girlfriends would sometimes use the pole to work out on, utilizing a pole-dance aerobics video she found somewhere (Okay, I’ll fessup....Santa gave it to her for Christmas). Now, keeping all that in mind for future reference...... An old friend of mine named Phil needed some bike parts. He was restoring a Shovelhead and I happened to have lots of parts that my son Jason (who I gave my ’74 to) has no use for and will probably never want. I bought that bike wrecked and rode it for twenty five years and I had a lot of stuff. So, I took some of the things that Phil needed over to his house one night and found him in his garage playing poker with his brothers. In short, we made that room into a class AA dungeon for the Halloween party. A few days AFTER the party, my furnace needed work and my regular guy (a good friend) was out of town, so I phoned the local heating company. I was in my garage doing something when this old guy shows up to work on the furnace (I call anybody older than me an “old guy”). I was right in the middle of tearing something apart, so I just told him to go on in and to keep going down the stairs and he’d eventually find it. Within minutes I realized what was happening and thought, ‘OH MY GOD! What is this guy gonna think!!’ Here was this elderly dude...a straight-laced, complete stranger, passing through a completely decorated full bar where he couldn’t help but notice the bras hanging from the ceiling, the stage WITH a brass stripper pole in the center, and even spot lights. AND THEN going further downstairs to find a gyno table surrounded by whips, chains and handcuffs!!! I immediately dropped what I was doing and literally RAN downstairs. I then casually tried to initiate a conversation with the guy. “How ya doin’ today?” The man wouldn’t even look at me. “Good.” “Ya got the furnace under control?” “Yup.” “Everything gonna be okay?” “Yup.” After a few more attempts, I just gave up and returned to my garage assuming he’d go back to his shop to exclaim, “You should see what I just saw! This long-haired weirdo biker fella has a bar with bras hanging all over the ceiling, a f&%k#ng stage WITH a stripper pole, whips, chains and yadda-yadda-yadda-!!” Well, fast forward to yesterday.... I never drink anywhere but home these days, and finding a companion of the opposite sex is, to say the least, difficult for a bearded and long haired kinky fat guy who smokes like an old locomotive. Those of you who are men know that a biker event is usually the WORST place to meet a woman. I simply don’t go that many other places that would help in that regard, and whenever I try the old “Drop a jar of mustard on her foot” ploy at my local grocery store to meet someone, all I get is yelled at. “Ouch!! You clumsy idiot!! What the hell’s wrong with you?!” I know my friends have gotten sick of me asking THEM to introduce me to someone. Hell, I even threw a hint out to y’all in a column last year with NO replies. So I just figured that December 2011 Outspokin’ the internet might do it. But almost every time I DO try computer dating, things just turn out weird. Well THIS time, a woman who first contacted me online just happened to be coming to my small town anyway, so I invited her to come over sometime for coffee to allow us to actually meet in person. She surprised me by phoning a few hours later and telling me she was on her way! So that I wouldn’t appear to be some kind of “player” I immediately hurried down to the bar to at least take down the bras. I stuffed them in a bag and waited somewhat nervously for her to show up. When she did and we got a bit more comfortable with each other, I showed her around and explained the history of the “Brass Pole”. She laughed all the way through the story that even included the gyno table! And then she suggested that I put it in a column since she had read a few from the state website. So, here it is. In truth, I despise dating strangers, even though this wasn’t exactly a “date”. And this particular woman and I probably won’t even see each other again due to the facts that 1. I might have shocked her a bit, and 2. She simply didn’t seem interested. And I’d understand both reasons. After all, she seemed very conservative and it does take some amount of interest to want to invest the time (the longer the better) to actually get to know ANYONE. Even then do we ever really? Most of us have even been married to someone for years, only to wake up one day and ask ourselves, ‘Who the hell IS this person I’ve been sharing my life with?’ But that’s not even the point of all this. I guess the point (if there IS a point) is that whenever I even think about changing how I live, who I am, or even how I act, I soon find that the best thing for everyone concerned is to just be myself, because like Simon and Garfunkel sang in “The Boxer”, ‘After changes upon changes we are more or less the same’. I’ve also found that although it might have taken me a while to learn and understand this... I LIKE me. I like who I am and how I live. I just don’t like being single and living alone. But I’d rather be alone than living a frustrated lie. And being me is sure a hellova lot less strain, hassle and work than trying to be someone else. On the other hand now that I think of it, it might be kinda fun to be Fritz the Cat. Bummer PS...Be careful if ya go out on New Year’s Eve. The distributor initially thought the ticket was a joke, but in 1985 Spain instituted a law that banned advertisements from promoting reckless driving. QUOTABLE QUOTE: “In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." ~ George Orwell (1903-1950) author of “1984” Tired of watching your Freedom slowly disappear? Wednesday November 16, 2011 WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Steve Austria (R – Beavercreek) applauded the House for bringing the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act (H.R. 822) to the floor for a final vote. As a cosponsor, Congressman Austria will speak on the House floor at approximately 1:15 p.m. today to urge his colleagues to join him in voting for the bill. “Many permit holders in Ohio still face uncertainty as to when they can conceal carry in other states,” Congressman Austria said. “As one of the thousands of Ohioans who currently holds a conceal carry permit, I understand the importance of the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act for my constituents. This bill strengthens Second Amendment rights by allowing permit holders to freely travel in any of the 49 states that allow conceal carry without the uncertainty and confusion that currently exists when crossing state lines.” As former Chairman of the Ohio Senate Judiciary Committee, Congressman Austria led the fight to pass legislation granting Ohioans the right to obtain a conceal carry permit. The National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act builds upon Austria’s efforts in the Ohio Senate by allowing Ohioans and others with a valid permit issued by their home state to conceal carry while visiting other states where it is not expressly prohibited. Ready to do something about it? A Membership Application is on the Back Cover of this Issue We Thank You in advance for your Support! December 2011 CONGRESSMAN AUSTRIA APPLAUDS PRO-SECOND AMENDMENT LEGISLATION H.R. 822 is not a federal takeover of the conceal carry permitting process, rather it preserves states’ rights by requiring residents to comply with their home state’s rules for getting a permit. The bill also maintains reciprocity agreements that states have entered into with other states. http://austria.house.gov/index.cfm? sectionid=44§iontree=23,24,44&itemid=438 Outspokin’ 22 Cleaning Out the Corral Classifieds are free to members, NO BUSINESSES PLEASE. The Region Zero 19th Annual Hog Roast held October 1st and 2nd at Pooch’s tavern in Mecca was cursed with REALLY crappy weather this year. Most of both days were drizzly, damp and bitingly brrrrisk. But since the event was planned months in advance and the advertising was already out and about, the only thing we could do was bite the bullet and keep those who did show up entertained. It wasn’t the first time the weather sucked for an event, nor will it be the last. That’s the problem with ANY outside event, but particularly in October. Because of this, it was already agreed upon before this event even happened that NEXT year we’re gonna be having it a month or so earlier. Still, we had a good (but small) turnout, the food was excellent, the bands (who played inside) were great, and we even had some great vendors show up. The vendors understood and have been in bad weather situations before, so I’m sure they’ll be back next year with many others. This new location and facility is fantastic!! Pooch’s spacious back yard (right next to the lake) and covered smoking deck (with its own bar) are perfect for an event that I’m sure will get bigger and bigger each year. The state-owned huge parking lot beside the bar will come in handy too. The bar itself was (and always is) VERY cool. Many thanks to the bar’s owners (Bruce and Paulette) for their continued support of ABATE. And thanks to our dedicated ABATE event team members, headed by our illustrious Regional Director Tammy Blanton (poor ‘lil wet girl) who even stayed there in a tent all weekend with her husband Ron. Due to her meticulous planning and wisdom, what could have been a financial disaster for ABATE wasn’t, and turned into a good time for everyone. Now, the NEXT weekend, Trum/Mah County’s “Zip It Up Run” on Oct. 9th out of Face’s Lounge in Newton Falls had GREAT weather and a GREAT turn-out!! It was 80 plus degrees, the sky a deep blue, and the leaves were turning (which is why this run is always so cool). Our Road Captain, Mike “Zedo” Sklepko must have been thinking of that when he chose the route that wound through beautiful small towns and farm country. Over 172 people were on the run, setting a new record for this annual event. Face’s courteous staff, large barroom and parking lot was (as always) the perfect place for staging a decent-sized run like this. Our October 15th Mah/Trum meeting was at the Borderline in Girard. The talk was of our recent “Zip It Up” run and our Regional Hog Roast. Nominations were begun for county, regional and state offices and will continue until the close of our next month’s (November’s) meeting. All positions are important to our club and we are growing as Region 8. We need all of your support and concerns so that we can take them to Columbus. Ride Hard, But Always Ride Safe Rusty Region 8 Deputy Director REGION NINE Region 8 Hello Region8, Well I'm sure by now that everybody has seen, heard, or witnessed that the Halloween Spooktacular was all that and then some, thank you everybody! Bob Shonk, Dorothy and the Tin Lady from Somerdale Inn send out a big thank you to everybody also. Hopefully everybody got the info on the Christmas Party change and made it. A big thank you goes out to Hip, Dan and everybody else that jumped to make it happen. Don't forget that our December meeting is the 11th at Lew's, 3238 Lincoln Way East in Massillon and it's Election time and several positions will need filled and/or voted on like Stark County Coordinator, Ed's stepping down because of health issues. Thank you Ed for everything you've done for Region 8. Another position that would be nice to see filled is the Safety & Education Officer, Mike Stock has a great program set up to get us started, Region 8 just needs somebody to take it on and get it going. Anyone interested contact Rusty or myself or just come to the December meeting. Speaking of Rusty thank you for the compliment in last month’s Outspokin'. Also, thank you to all of Region 8 from the ones that took on officer positions, to those that helped out and/or attended meetings and/or events throughout the year and to those that remained members of Region 8. We had a good year and with this momentum and support we can have a better one in 2012, we can crank up our current events and we have a new event we're putting together in May. So let's Rock 'n' Roll. A.B.A.T.E. has a lot of good things going on, make sure you flip back a few pages and check out Woody's article for the latest on the right of way bill, the handle bar bill, and everything else we have going on on the legislative side. Also make sure to check out the AMA and the MRF articles or just come to the meetings and listen to Pudge. I would like to start out by thanking the Veterans in our organization, and also all Veterans worldwide. Thank you for your service and dedication. Another huge thank you goes to those who are actively in the Military, fighting for our freedoms and protecting us. This also extends to their families, who are sacrificing much as well. Finally, to those Veterans who have paid the ultimate price, another heartfelt thank you, and God bless. Please take a moment or two to keep all members of the Military, past and present, in your minds and hearts; and if you know a Vet, thank them, buy them a meal, or a drink, and reflect on where our freedom would be without them. Another round of thanks should go to the Officers of Region Nine. Thanks to all of you. You have given your time and effort, dedication and inspiration to the organization. You have made my job a lot easier and fun, and for that I am truly grateful. To those of you who will be returning next year, I am looking forward to working with you, once again. To those who will not, once again, thanks. More thanks to those new members who have accepted nominations for positions next year. I am looking forward to work(Continued on Page 32) December 2011 Outspokin’ 29 December 2011 Outspokin’ 30 December 2011 Outspokin’ 31 (Continued from Page 29 Region News) On a local level, I would like to thank all those individuals who worked so hard on the Franklin County Toy Run. I will not name any names in this article; you all know who you are. I will however, do that in next month’s article, along with a report on the event itself. Thank you to all the businesses who have either hosted a meeting, an event, or have supported ABATE in our various endeavors all year. We will continue to need that support even more in the next two years. It is hard to keep thanking everyone who needs thanking, without becoming extremely redundant, but I have to give the biggest thank you to you, the members of ABATE. YOU are the organization, and the lifeblood of what we are trying to accomplish. Thank you to everyone who has renewed your membership, and thanks to all the new members who have decided to join us in the fight to defend our rights. My last thank you goes to Diane Thompson, our capable newsletter editor. She has to bear the onus of my perpetual tardiness with these articles. She is always gracious, but deep down, I know she would like to bury a boot in my behind. If I return for another year, I will do my best to turn them in on time. As for the past year, it has been a difficult one for all concerned. The biggest challenge is declining membership. Some of this is probably due to the economy, some due to burnout, and some to apathy. Regional website problems, dissension within the organization, and other issues loom over the horizon. We continue to deal with these issues now, as well as into the future. Remember no issue can be effectively dealt with, without unity of purpose. Remember, elections will be held at the December Franklin County meeting, both for Officers and a meeting location. We are going back to the 6 month/6 month format. Bring your ABATE membership card-rosters will be checked. Meeting location is the Birch Tavern in Groveport. One final thing-PLEASE DO NOT TEXT ME!! If you need to talk to me, please call me (614-332-0198). If you get my voice mail, leave a message, I will get back to you. You can also email me. If you do, please indicate something in the subject line that references ABATE. I do not open emails from email addresses that I don't recognize, unless there is something in the subject line that is ABATE or motorcycle issue related. Please keep that in mind.
