Looking back at what the Museum has accomplished over these four years, two themes are clear: Chicago’s communities and fiscal responsibility. Let’s begin by looking at the community dimension of many of our exhibitions. When my term began in 2009, the Catholic Chicago exhibition was winding up, and now Shalom Chicago has opened — two reminders of the role of religious communities in Chicago. Together with our friends at DePaul University, Lincoln Park Block by Block took a look at our own neighborhood. Burnham 2.0 imagined Chicago’s communities with high-speed rail in place, all in the spirit of the original Burnham Plan, whose centenary the whole city was exploring. As I write this message, Vivian Maier’s Chicago takes a powerful and unexpected look at Chicago faces and Chicago streets, and our Ebony Fashion Fair exhibition is in the final stages of preparation. When it opens on March 16, 2013, visitors will learn how Chicagobased Johnson Publishing Company used its annual fashion show as a launching pad for pride, success, and philanthropic achievement in African American communities all over America. In 2009, a long-awaited bicentennial had a powerful community dimension at the Chicago History Museum. Abraham Lincoln and Benito Juárez served as presidents of their respective countries at the same time. We chose to celebrate the lives of both leaders side-by-side. The Mexican government loaned our museum national treasures that never before had left Mexico. Our dedication ceremony for these exhibitions was a proud moment for Mexico and for Chicago’s Mexican community. We thank the National Museum of Mexican Art for its invaluable help. If you have noticed that partnerships are the key to great community exhibits, you’re right. Out in Chicago, our exploration of the rich history of Chicago’s LGBT communities, came about through long-standing collaborations with universities, the Elizabeth Morse Trusts, and the Center on Halsted. A partnership took on an entirely new level when our temporary show, My Chinatown, became a permanent exhibit at the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, thanks to The Chicago Community Trust. The other major theme for these four years has been fiscal responsibility. Each year, I am happy to say, our operations closed with a balanced budget and we also managed to build up reserves for a rainy day. By the way, these two themes are powerfully linked: Without fiscal responsibility, it would not be possible to fulfill our mission of sharing the stories of Chicago’s communities. It has been a privilege to work with our staff and to serve with my fellow Trustees. I thank them all, and I thank our loyal members, our two wonderful auxiliary groups, and our very generous communities of support. I look forward to great days ahead for Chicago’s museum. It means putting our collection to work in ways that we could not have imagined just a few years ago. Here are some new initiatives that have taken their place alongside long-standing digital programs, such as the Encyclopedia of Chicago and online resources for Chicago’s teachers. We have the Guild to thank for this year’s launch of the Great Chicago Fire mobile app, which is equivalent to holding a 400-page book in your hand with 350 illustrations, plus film and music. Thanks to the Costume Council, highlights from our costume collection are available through a new drop-dead gorgeous website. How lucky we are to have auxiliary groups that believe in our mission! By the way, we recently reached the 250,000-image milestone in digitizing our collection of two million photos. That’s why you are seeing more and more of our images popping up on TV and film and in magazines and books. These images also feed sites that we create ourselves: Tumblr hosts our new photo blog, and YouTube and Vimeo host our most recent oral history films. Chicago celebrated Studs Terkel’s centenary on May 16, 2012, and there’s great news on the digital front there as well. With the help of The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the Library of Congress is engaged in the massive undertaking of digitizing his 5,400 WFMT radio broadcasts and his oral history interviews. These tapes are among our treasures and we look forward to finding ways to share them. Digitization reached our manuscript collections in a big way this year when our Claude Barnett Papers became available online. That’s 237,600 digitized sheets of paper. There are many more to come, because our partner, ProQuest, is identifying new lists of our archives to process and distribute through libraries and museums around the country. It thrills us to know that we can share Chicago’s stories online with researchers and the general public even when our building is closed. Visits to our Research Center have changed too. These days, visitors often snap their own photos of the pages they look at. This do-it-yourself digitization costs us nothing and serves the priority needs of individual researchers. The digital world is like the sports world: it’s great to get the crowd into the game. Here’s one example. Our very active “Out in Chicago” Facebook page generates on-going engagement with the audience. We thank our Facebook friends for their part in keeping that great exhibition alive so that it can continue to serve the public. Unexpected Chicago is our experiment in social media “spreadability.” We display one artifact for a few weeks in our museum’s lobby, write about the artifact in our blog, and then watch reports spread through the media. It’s great fun to see the power of a single artifact. And speaking about going viral, this year the YouTube views of our film about the CHM low rider crossed the onemillion mark. So you can see, we have a physical collection, but we also have a growing digital collection. Creating, managing, curating, and “spreading” digital assets is an important way that we share Chicago’s stories in new ways every year. This new world has its challenges, but the Chicago History Museum is helping to write the playbook. I can’t think of a more exciting time for museums since the time when the first great museum was founded in Alexandria, Egypt, some 2,300 years ago. Gary T. Johnson President MAIN MENU 6 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Over the past year, the Chicago History Museum’s diverse offerings included special exhibitions, publications, programs, and special events that appealed to fashion mavens, families, schoolchildren, and history buffs of all ages. All of these activities are made possible through the Museum’s many generous donors, supporters, and lenders. MAIN MENU 7 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Charles James: Genius Deconstructed October 22, 2011–April 16, 2012 Visitors to the exhibition Charles James: Genius Deconstructed viewed the spectacular clothing designed by the couturier, whose mother hailed from a prominent Chicago family. James’ creativity, passion, and unrelenting obsessions are legendary, but his genius is not widely understood. As part of the exhibition research, Museum staff x-rayed some of the garments in an effort to fully understand the couturier’s construction methods. To help visitors further appreciate James’ work, replicas of three of his most stunning and iconic pieces appeared in the gallery. Here, a visitor examines the Clover gown. Charles James: Genius Deconstructed was presented by the Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum MAIN MENU 8 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Charles James’ work inspired this year’s edition of the Museum’s popular design competition FashioNext. The four finalists were Trina Hillesheim, William Jiang, T.K. Perry, and Cynthia J. Roman. On October 19, 2011, their creations appeared in a gala runway show on the Museum’s Uihlein Plaza; Cynthia J. Roman’s design won the competition. The exhibition catalogue for Charles James was a popular item in the Museum Store. MAIN MENU 9 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Magic June 9, 2012 – January 6, 2013 This exhibition offered an intriguing journey through the history of magic. A charming multimedia program, an array of artifacts, and special interactive displays delighted children and adults alike. The fun wasn’t confined to one gallery; all summer long, magicians roamed the Museum to amaze and amuse visitors. Magic was made possible by gifts from the Kipper Family Foundation, the Crown Family Fund for Exhibitions and Programs, and the Segal Family Foundation. The Object Theater was provided by The Jacob & Rosaline Cohn Foundation. Live magician support provided by The Albert Pick Jr. Fund. MAIN MENU 10 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Unexpected Chicago The Chicago History Museum’s collection includes more than 20 million objects, documents, and photographs. Every other month, Unexpected Chicago showcases one of these artifacts along with the stories behind it—some of which may surprise you. November 2011 Before Hollywood, there was Chicago. Essanay Studios in Uptown filmed hundreds of movies, and Charlie Chaplin was one of its most popular stars. This breakaway cane helped Chaplin do his famous pratfalls. December 2011 In the game Pie Face, unlucky players lose points and take a pie in the face. Invented by Marvin Glass, a prolific and imaginative game developer who founded his company in Chicago in 1941, it was only one of his many creations. Over the next four decades, Glass developed and prototyped toys including Mouse Trap, Operation, and Lite-Brite for companies such as Hasbro and Milton Bradley. January 2012 On December 8, 1940, the Chicago Bears crushed the Washington Redskins. Most of the team’s players signed this championship game ball, as did franchise coach and co-founder George Halas. April 2012 Native Chicagoan and White Sox owner Bill Veeck was a master of promotion. He offered unusual give-aways and a slew of other game-day innovations to draw crowds. This Lou Darvas newspaper cartoon gently mocks Veeck’s unusual track record. Unexpected Chicago is supported by a gift from The Jacob & Rosaline Cohn Foundation. Even the smallest donation helps share Chicago’s history with the world in surprising and fascinating ways. Please consider donating to preserve Chicago’s treasures. MAIN MENU 11 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Members Open House May 5, 2012 The Museum welcomed its members to the annual Open House, offering special behind-thescene glimpses of the Museum at work. Here, Gary T. Johnson, Museum president, showed members his office. Russell Lewis, executive vice president and chief historian, talked to members in the library stacks, where a diverse array of printed materials, including books, newspapers, menus, theater programs, and trade cards, are stored. These materials and others are available for study in the Research Center. Conservator Carole Turchan discussed her work on a fashion illustration by Antonio Lopez that appeared in the exhibition about couturier Charles James. MAIN MENU 12 2012 ANNUAL REPORT Members Annual Holiday Party Tours History Pub Crawl The Museum’s popular pub crawls offer a unique look at the city’s past through its historic watering holes. The St. Patrick’s Day tour (above) is especially popular. In December, the Museum welcomed members and their families for a festive holiday brunch, crafts, and fun-filled activities inspired by Chicago’s favorite winter traditions. Bike Tours From the World’s Columbian Exposition to Back of the Yards, we rode through Chicago’s history with expert guides. These tours have been a popular feature of the city’s warmer months. Graceland Cemetery Graceland Cemetery turned 150 in 2012. The burial place of many famous Chicagoans, it also boasts stunning landscape design. This two-part program began with a panel discussion of Graceland’s history; in the afternoon, celebrations moved outside to the cemetery itself, to admire the beautiful grounds in person (left). The exclusive tours sponsor is BMO Harris Bank MAIN MENU 13 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 2011 Costume Ball On October 21, 2011, the Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum launched our annual Costume Ball in celebration of the exhibition Charles James: Genius Deconstructed. Innovative designer Ralph Rucci was on hand to accept the Award for Design Excellence, applauded by an audience of fashionable Chicagoans. Proceeds from this event went to support the Museum’s Costume Collection—the second largest costume collection in the world. Catherine Eberle, Robin Loewenberg Tebbe, and Lawrie Weed, co-chairs of the ball. Diana Palomar and Noren Ungaretti Alexa and Linda Johnson Rice MAIN MENU 14 2012 ANNUAL REPORT EIGHTEENTH ANNUAL MAKING HISTORY AWARDS : 2012 AWARDEES Each year, the Chicago History Museum presents Making History Awards to Chicagoans and Chicago companies whose extraordinary achievements are linked in significant ways to our city and its history. The annual operating revenue budget of $7,512,406 was exceeded by $212,978. Although a modest amount, we have allocated these surplus funds to establish an operating reserve that will provide some insurance against future revenue shortfalls or unanticipated operating expenses. We also were fortunate to have had the strong support of our trustees leading us in a successful year of fundraising, a critical role in the financial health of the museum. providing innovative educational resources, presenting high-quality exhibitions and programs, and reaching out to new audiences. At year-end, the value of the museum’s investment portfolio was $72,326,163, a decline of $4,454,758 from the prior year, following two years with positive returns. There also was a negative change in the value of an interest rate swap agreement of $11,106,991, due to the low interest rates. Carried as a liability of $18,656,451 in the financial statements, the reduction in net assets would only be realized if the swap agreement was terminated. These are the two primary factors resulting in an overall decrease in net assets of $16,838,473 for the fiscal year. Patrick Dolan Treasurer The fiscal year results and financial position are presented in the following charts. The financial statements have been audited by Grant Thornton LLP, independent certified public accountants, and their report contains no exceptions or qualifications as to financial position and results of operations. You may request a copy of the full audited report from the Finance Office at the Chicago History Museum. Fiscal 2012 also represented the successful completion of year two of an ambitious strategic plan. In the year ahead, we anticipate that the economy may still present challenges for organizations such as ours and for their constituents. Nevertheless, the trustees, management, and dedicated staff look forward to achieving new goals in the year to come, strengthening existing relationships with our generous supporters, MAIN MENU 27 2012 ANNUAL REPORT TREASURER’S REPORT STATEMENTS OF FINANCIAL POSITION STATEMENTS OF ACTIVITIES Year ended June 30, 2012 Year ended June 30, 2012 Total Assets 2012 Support and Revenue 2012 Cash and cash equivalents 2,394,617 Contributions and grants 4,558,070 Pledges, loans, and accounts receivable 4,236,870 Chicago Park District 1,783,093 Land, Buildings, and equipment 30,843,688 Investment income for operations 4,002,105 Investments 72,326,163 Membership dues and admissions 1,332,529 Auxilliary Services 1,907,450 Perpetual Trusts Other 4,709,458 607,935 Other 240,322 Total Assets 115,118,731 Total Support and revenue 13,823,569 Liabilities and Net Assets 2012 Operating Expenditures 2012 Accounts payable and accrued expenses 1,435,261 Collections and curatorial 1,978,154 Interest rate swap liability 18,656,451 Exhibitions and education 2,305,782 Long term debt 50,975,000 Institutional advancement 1,012,970 Administration 1,824,822 Building operations 2,351,439 Auxiliary Services 1,105,503 Net Assets Unrestricted Temporarily restricted Permanently restricted Total Net Assets Total Liabilities and Net Assets 31,231,073 914,616 11,906,330 Total Expense 10,578,670 Non-Operating 2012 Investment total return (4,630,153) 44,052,019 115,118,731 Interest rate swap agreement value (11,106,991) Depreciation (1,711,837) Debt Service (2,235,967) Other non-operating expenses (398,424) Total Non-operating (20,083,372) Change in net assets (16,838,473) MAIN MENU 28 2012 ANNUAL REPORT VOLUNTEERS Volunteer Gallery Interpreters Vera Antoniadis Penny Applegate** Cecelia Auditore Ava Berland Sondra Biller* Greg Borzo** Mike Boucek** Evan Brandstadter David Breitenbach* Helen Brown** Robert Case** Marion Cohen** Michaela Crotty Anthony Davis Emma Denny Lynn Doherty James Donovan Irwin Drobny** Phillip Elkins Marita Espinosa Marge Fahrenbach* Mike Felten Barbara Fiacchino Helen Fogel* Beverly Fox*** Jillian Garzonio Ed Geisenheimer** Alyssa Getta Rick Gordon Muriel Hames* Ben Hane Adrien Hayward James Karela Sandy Keefe* David Keller Karen Kincaid* Anthony King Linda Klutznick* Emma Lang* Lynn McKay Ledford* Valerie Litchfield* Ben Long Madelyn MacMahon**** Ryan Mahaney Leroy Malone* Diane Mergen Edyta Miazga* James Novak John O’Donnell** Elizabeth O’Toole Larry Pachol* Diane Pekow* Scottie Perry Jane Purdy* John Quinn Peg Quinn** Lena Reynolds Carole Rivera* Dean Rodkin* Judy Rosenak Bette Rosenberg** Diane Rosewall Jeremie Rosley Marian Shaw* Christine Sheehan** Robert Silver* Shirley Sivels** Tom Stokes Peter Stover Andrew Strang* Allison Sundberg Ed Swanson Jim Talamonti* Deborah Tanenbaum* Bernard Turner** Ian Wagner Nina Whitsel* Marilyn Williams Robert Woyach* Henry Wykowski DEPARTMENTAL VOLUNTEERS Collections Alexa Beller Anna Kosters Fredi Leaf***** Kelly LeJeune Jane McCarthy** Diane Olson Kirsten Schuttey Curatorial Affairs Barbara Angarone Samantha Offsay James Sherman Marketing Heather Sturtz Rosedale Visitor Services Jo Krumhus Emma Lang* Susan LoGiudice Jean Schwartz Nicole Usiondek Lorie Westerman* Education Greg Borzo** Laura Braglia Robert Case** Kathy Chioni Nancy Comstock James Donovan Irwin Drobny** Marge Fahrenbach* Frances Garvey Muriel Hames* Marissa Hockfield Roy Hurst Kristen Kelly George Miller** Bonnie Pool** Michael Rivera Bette Rosenberg** Bob Silver* Trenton Stewart Tom Stokes Ed Swanson Bernard Turner** Henry Wykowski At the annual volunteer recognition event, Fredi Leaf (above, center) was honored for twenty-five years of service.
